A meal was brought to `Abdur-Rahman bin `Auf while he was fasting. He said, “Mus`ab bin `Umar was martyred, and he was better than I, yet he was shrouded in a Burda (i.e. a sheet) so that, if his head was covered, his feet became naked, and if his feet were covered, his head became naked.” `Abdur-Rahman added, “Hamza was martyred and he was better than 1. Then worldly wealth was bestowed upon us and we were given thereof too much. We are afraid that the reward of our deeds have been given to us in this life.” `Abdur-Rahman then started weeping so much that he left the food.
I asked Qasim b. Muhammad about a person who had three dwelling houses and he willed away the third part of every one of these houses; he (Qasim b. Muhammad) said: All of them could be combined in one house; and then said: ‘A’isha informed me that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.
It was narrated from Al-Mughirah bin Shu’bah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) went out to relieve himself, and Al-Mughirah followed him, (carrying) a vessel of water. He poured water for him when he had finished relieving himself, and he performed Wudu’ and wiped over his Khuffs.
“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) led us in praying ‘Asr in Al-Mukhammas. He said: ‘This prayer was enjoined upon those who came before you, but they neglected it. Whoever prays it regularly will have a two-fold reward, and there is no prayer after it until the Shahid appears.” And the Shahid is “the star.” This is a statement of one of the narrators, and Allah knows best.
“My father and I entered upon Abu Barzah, and my father said to him: ‘How did the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) pray the prescribed prayers?’ He said: He used to pray Zuhr, which you call Al-Uala (the first) when the sun passed its zenith; he used to pray ‘Asr then one of us could go back to his home in the farthest part of Al-Madinah when the sun was still bright.'” – He said: “I forgot what he said to me about Maghrib.” – “And he used to like to delay ‘Isha’, which you call Al-‘Atamah, and he did not like to sleep before it nor speak after it. And he used to finish the Al-Ghadah (Fajr) prayer when a man could recognize his neighbor, and he used to recite between sixty and one hundred verses.'”
“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) aid: ‘When the Iqamah for prayer is said, there is no prayer except the prescribed prayer.”‘
“I followed the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) when he was riding, and I placed my hand on his foot and said : O Messenger of Allah, teach me Surah Hud and Surah Yusuf. He said: ‘You will never recite anything greater before Allah than: “Say: I seek refuge with (Allah), the Lord of the daybreak.” And “Say: I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of mankind.'”
“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to teach us the tashahhud as he taught us the Quran, and he used to say: : ‘At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat, as-salamu ‘alaika ayyuhan-Nabiyyu wa rahmatAllahi wa barakatuhu. As-salamu ‘alaina wa ‘ala ‘ibad illahis-salihin, ash-hadu an la ilaha ill-Allah wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasuluhu (All compliments, prayers and pure words are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah (SWT) and his blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous slaves of Allah (SWT). I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger).’
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) finished praying two rak’ahs,and Dhul-Yadain said to him: “Has the prayer been shortened or did you forget, O Messenger of Allah?” The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Is Dhul-Yadain speaking the truth?” The people said: “Yes.” So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) stood up and prayed two, then he said the takbir and prostrated as usual or longer than that. Then he raised his head, then he prostrated as usual or longer than that, then he sat up.”
“I heard Suwaid bin Ghaflah (narrate it) from Abu Dharr and Abu Ad-Darda.'”
That Zaid bin Arqam offered the funeral prayer and said the Takbir five times, and said that the Messenger of Allah had said the Takbir like this.
“I heard the Messenger of Allah offer the funeral prayer and say: Allahumma ighfir lahu warhamhu wa`fu `anhu wa `afihi, wa akrim nuzulahu wa wassi` mudkhalahu waghsilhu bi-ma’in wa thaljin wa-barad, wa naqqihi min al-khataya kama yunaqqa ath-thawb al-abyad min ad-danas. Wa abdilhu daran khairan min darihi wa ahlan khayran min ahlihi, wa zawjan khayran min zawjihi, wa qihi ‘adhab al-qabri wa ‘adhab an-nar (O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, forgive him and keep him safe and sound, honor the place where he settles and make his entrance wide; wash him with water and snow and hail, and cleanse him of his sin as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. Give him a house better than his house and a family better than his family and a spouse better than his spouse. Protect him from the torment of the grave and the torment of Hell-fire).” ‘Awf said: “I wished that I was that deceased person because of the supplication that the Messenger of Allah said for that deceased person.”
“The Prophet entered Makkah during Umratul-Qada’ and Ibn Rawahah went before him, saying: Get out of his way, you unbelievers, make way. Today we will fight about its revelation With blows that will remove heads from shoulders And make friend unmindful of friend. Umar said to him: “O Ibn Rawahah! In the Sanctuary of Allah and in front of the Messenger of Allah you recite poetry?” The Prophet said: “Let him do that, for by the one in whose hand is my soul, his words are harder for them than being shot with arrows.”
“It is not right for a Muslim who has anything concerning which a will should be made, to abide for more than three nights without having a written will with him.”
“I asked Ibn Abi Awfa: ‘Did the Messenger of Allah leave a will?’ He said: ‘No.’ I said: ‘How come it is prescribed for the Muslims to make wills?’ He said: ‘He left instructions urging the Muslims to adhere to the Book of Allah.'”
“The Messenger of Allah did not leave behind a Dinar or a Dirham, or a sheep or a camel, and he did not leave any will.”
“When these Verses were revealed – ‘And come not near to the orphan’s property, except to improve it,’ and ‘Verily, those who unjustly eat up the property of orphans’ – the people avoided the property and food of the orphans. That caused hardship to the Muslims and they complained about that to the Prophet. Then Allah revealed: ‘And they ask you concerning orphans. Say: The best thing is to work honestly in their property, and if you mix your affairs with theirs, then they are your brothers. And Allah knows him who means mischief (e.g. to swallow their property) from him who means good (e.g. to save their property). And if Allah had wished, He could have put you into difficulties.'”
The Messenger of Allah said: “Whoever has land, let him cultivate it or give it to his brother, and not lease it to him.”
“I heard the Messenger of Allah say: ‘Whoever fights to protect his wealth and is killed, he is a martyr.'”
“The Messenger of Allah said: ‘The hand of the pilferer, robber and traitor is not to be cut off.”‘
“The Messenger of Allah saw me wearing a little dab of Khaluq. He said: ‘O Ya’la, do you have a wife?’ I said: ‘No.’ He said: ‘Wash it off and do not put it on again, then wash it off and do not put it on again, then wash it off and do not put it on again.’ I said: ‘So I washed it off, and did not put it on again, then I washed it off and did not put it on again, then I washed it off, and did not put it on again.”
The Prophet (ﷺ) used to kiss (me) during the month of fasting.
Referring to the verse: “Those who believed and adopted exile… As to those who believed but came not into exile”: A bedouin (who did not migrate to Medina) did not inherit from an emigrant, and an emigrant did no inherit from him. It was abrogated by the verse: “But kindred by blood have prior rights against each other.”
Zaid b. Arqam used to utter four takbirs (Allah is Most Great) over our dead person (during prayer). He uttered five takbirs on a dead person. So I asked him. He replied: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to utter those. Abu Dawud said: I remember the tradition of Ibn al-Muthanna in a more guarded way.
The Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) prohibited anyone taking two dates together with the exception that you ask permission from your companions.
The prophet (ﷺ) passed by Ibn Sa’Id along with some of his companions. ‘Umar b. al-Kattab was among them. He was playing with boys near the fortress of Banu Maghalah. He was near the age of puberty (i.e. a boy). Before he was aware, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) gave him a pat on the back and said : Do you testify that you are the Messenger of Allah Ibn Sayyad then looked at him and said: I testify that you are the Apostle of Gentiles. Ibn Sayyad then said the prophet (ﷺ) then asked him : What comes to you ? He replied: One who speaks the truth and one who lies come to me. The prophet (may peace upon him) said: You are confused. The Messenger of Allah (may peace upon him) said to him: I have concealed something (in my hand) and he concealed the verse “the day when the sky will bring forth smoke (dukhan) clearly visible Ibn Sayyad said: It is smoke (dukhan) .The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Away with you, You cannot get farther than your rank. ‘Umar said: “Messenger of Allah, permit me to cut off his head. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: If he is the one (the Dajjal), you will not be given power over him, and if he is not, you will not do well in killing him.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Beware! I have been given the Qur’an and something like it, yet the time is coming when a man replete on his couch will say: Keep to the Qur’an; what you find in it to be permissible treat as permissible, and what you find in it to be prohibited treat as prohibited. Beware! The domestic ass, beasts of prey with fangs, a find belonging to confederate, unless its owner does not want it, are not permissible to you If anyone comes to some people, they must entertain him, but if they do not, he has a right to mulct them to an amount equivalent to his entertainment.
This man with the crippled hand was on that day with us in the mosque. We would sit with him by day and by night, and he was a poor man. I saw him attending the meals of ‘Ali (ra) which he took with the people, and I clothed him with a cloak of mine. Abu Maryam said: The man with the crippled hand was called Nafi` Dhu al-Thadyah (Nafi`, man of nipple). He had in his hand something like a female breast with a nipple at it ends like the nipple of the female breast. If had some hair on it like the whiskers of cat. Abu Dawud said: He was known among the people by the name of Harqus.
I said: Messenger of Allah! to whom should I show kindness? He replied: Your mother, next your mother, next your mother, and then comes your father, and then your relatives in order of relationship. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: If a man asks his slave whom he freed for giving him property which is surplus with him and he refuses to give it to him, the surplus property which he refused to give will be called on the Day of resurrection as a large bald snake. Abu Dawud said: Aqra’ means a snake whose hair of the head were removed on account of poison.
When the people of the Yemen came, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: The people of the Yemen have come to you and they are first to shake hands.
“When Allah’s Messenger sat for the first two Rak’ah it was as if he was on hot stones.” Shu’bah (one of the narrators) said: “Then Sa’d’s lips moved (saying) something. So I said: ‘Until he stood?’ He said: ‘Until he stood.'”
the Prophet said: “Charity is not lawful for the rich nor for the physically fit.”
“I heard the Messenger of Allah, while he was performing Salat for a deceased person. I could hear him saying in his prayer: (Allahummagfir lahu, war hamhu, waghsilhu bil-baradi (waghsilhu) kama yughsaluth-thawb) ‘O Allah! Forgive him, have mercy upon him, and wash him with (snow or ice) (and wash him) just as a garment is washed.'”
The Messenger of Allah said: “Whoever consoles a bereaved mother, he will be clothes with a Burd in Paradise.”
“The Messenger of Allah said, ‘Allahu Akbar’ over the deceased, so he raised his hands with the first Takbir, and he placed his right (hand) over his left.”
From his father that Rukanah wrestled the Prophet (ﷺ) and the Prophet (ﷺ) won the match. Rukanah said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying: ‘Indeed what distinguishes between us and between the idolater is the turban over the cap.'” This Hadith is Hasan Gharib. Its chain is not established, and we do not know of Abu Al-Hasan Al-‘Asqalani, nor Ibn Rukanah.
“Your smiling in the face of your brother is charity, commanding good and forbidding evil is charity, your giving directions to a man lost in the land is charity for you. Your seeing for a man with bad sight is a charity for you, your removal of a rock, a thorn or a bone from the road is charity for you. Your pouring what remains from your bucket into the bucket of your brother is charity for you.”
“The Prophet (ﷺ) died while he was having trouble with three tribes: Thaqif, Banu Hanifah, and Banu Umayyah.”
The Messenger of Allah said: “Performing ablution properly is half of faith, saying Al-Hamdu Lillah fills the Scale (of good deeds), saying Subhan-Allah and Allahu Akbar fills the heavens and the earth, prayer is light, Zakat is proof, patience is brightness and the Qur’an is proof for you or against you. Every person goes out in the morning to sell his soul, so he either frees it or destroys it.'”
He heard Abu Hurairah say: “A man came to the Messenger of Allah and said: “O Messenger of Allah, we travel by sea and carry a small amount of water with us. If we use it for ablution, we will become thirsty. Can we perform ablution with seawater?’ The Messenger of Allah said: ‘Its water is a means of purification, ad its dead meat is permissible. (i.e. the fish found dead in the sea).'”
The Prophet said: “There is no prayer for one who does not have ablution, and there is no ablution for one who does not mention the Name of Allah (before it). There is no prayer for one who does not send blessing, (Salat) upon the Prophet, and there is no prayer for one who does not love the Ansar.” (Da’if) Another chain with similar wording.
“I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying ‘Amin’ after he said, ‘nor of those who went astray.’
“I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: ‘On Friday there is a time of the day during which no person asks Allah for something but He will give him what he asks for.’” It was said: ‘When is that time?’ He said: ‘When the Iqamah for prayer (is called), until the prayer ends.’”
“If anyone of you is charged with taking care of his brother (after death), let him shroud him well.”
“There are three times during the day when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbade us to offer the funeral prayer or bury our dead: When the sun has fully risen (until it is higher up in the sky), when it is overhead at noon until it has passed the meridian, and when it is starting to set until it has set.”
that the Prophet said: “The conditions most deserving to be fulfilled are those by means of which the private parts become permissible for you.”
I heard Anas bin Malik saying: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: “Standing guard one night in the cause of Allah is better than a man fasting and praying, among his family, for a thousand years. The year is three hundred and sixty days and a day is like a thousand years.”
“The Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) said: ‘The one who sneezes may be responded to three times; if he sneezes more than that, he has a cold.'”
the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Allah does not bestow a blessing upon any slave and he says: ‘Al-hamdu Lillah (praise is to Allah),’ except that what he gives (the praise) is better than what he received (the blessing).”
The Prophet said: “Whatever I have commanded you do it, and whatever I have forbidden you, refrain from it.”
