# Sahih al-Bukhari - One-fifth of Booty to the Cause of Allah (Khumus) *Exported from [ParallelQuran.com](https://parallelquran.com) on June 20, 2026* **10 hadith** --- ## Hadith #2973 **Book:** One-fifth of Booty to the Cause of Allah (Khumus) | **Narrator(s):** Safinah | **Grade:** Sahih (the wife of the Prophet) That she came to visit Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) while he was in I`tikaf (i.e. seclusion in the Mosque during the last ten days of Ramadan). When she got up to return, Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) got up with her and accompanied her, and when he reached near the gate of the Mosque close to the door (of the house) of Um Salama, the wife of the Prophet, two Ansari men passed by them and greeted Allah’s Apostle and then went away. Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) addressed them saying, “Don’t hurry! (She is my wife),” They said, “Glorified be Allah! O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) (You are far away from any suspicion),” and his saying was hard on them. Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Satan circulates in the mind of a person as blood does (in his body). She entered into an agreement to purchase her freedom. She was a very beautiful woman, most attractive to the eye. Aisha said: She then came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) asking him for the purchase of her freedom. When she was standing at the door, I looked at her with disapproval. I realised that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would look at her in the same way that I had looked. She said: Messenger of Allah, I am Juwayriyyah, daughter of al-Harith, and something has happened to me, which is not hidden from you. I have fallen to the lot of Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammas, and I have entered into an agreement to purchase of my freedom. I have come to you to seek assistance for the purchase of my freedom. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Are you inclined to that which is better? She asked: What is that, Messenger of Allah? He replied: I shall pay the price of your freedom on your behalf, and I shall marry you. She said: I shall do this. She (Aisha) said: The people then heard that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had married Juwayriyyah. They released the captives in their possession and set them free, and said: They are the relatives of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) by marriage. We did not see any woman greater than Juwayriyyah who brought blessings to her people. One hundred families of Banu al-Mustaliq were set free on account of her. I swear by Allah, if I strike a stick with a stick, I would annihilate them like the day that passed away. He then transmitted the tradition of Abu Bakr b. ‘Ayyash. He said in it: Hear and obey the caliph of Allah and his select ‘Abd al-Malik bin Marwan. He then transmitted the rest of the tradition, and said: If I seized Rabi’ah for Mudar.
