# Sahih al-Bukhari - Hajj (Pilgrimage) *Exported from [ParallelQuran.com](https://parallelquran.com) on August 22, 2026* **21 hadith** --- ## Hadith #1484 **Book:** Hajj (Pilgrimage) | **Narrator(s):** Safwan bin Y'ala bin Umayya صفوان بن يعلى بن أمية | **Grade:** Sahih Ya’la said to ‘Umar, “Show me the Prophet (ﷺ) when he is being inspired Divinely.” While the Prophet (ﷺ) was at Ji’rana (in the company of some of his Companions) a person came and asked, “O Allah’s Messenger! What is your verdict regarding that person who assumes Ihram for ‘Umra and is scented with perfume ?” The Prophet (ﷺ) kept quiet for a while and he was Divinely inspired (then). ‘Umar beckoned Ya’la. So he came, and the Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) was shaded with sheet. Ya’la put his head in and saw that the face of Allah’s Messenger was red and he was snoring. The Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) said to him: What would you do in your Hajj? He said: I would take off the clothes and would wash from me this perfume. (Once) when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was in Ji’rana and there was a cloth which provided shade over him, and there were his Companions with him. ‘Umar being one of them, there came a person with a cloak of wool on him daubed with perfume and he said: Messenger of Allah, what about the person who entered upon the state of Ihram with a cloak after daubing it with perfume? The Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) looked at him for a short while, and then became quiet, and revelation began descending upon him, and ‘Umar gestured (with his hand) to Ya’la b. Umayya to come. Ya’la came and he entered his head (beneath the cloth and saw) the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) with his face red, and breathing heavily. Then he felt relieved (of that burden) and he said: Where is the man who was just asking me about Umra? And Ya’la used to say: That was the most weighty of my deeds, in my opinion. Safwan said that Ya’la had stated: I had a servant; he quarrelled with another person, and the one bit the hand of the other. (‘Ata’ said that Safwan had told him which one had bitten the hand of the other.) So he whose hand was bitten drew ill from (the mouth) of the one who had bitten it and (in this scuffle) one of his foreteeth was also drawn out. Her brother, Anas bin An-Nadr, said: “Will you break the front tooth of so and so? No, by the One Who sent you with the truth, the front tooth of so and so will not be broken!” Before that, they had asked her family for forgiveness and blood money. When her brother – who was the paternal uncle of Anas and was martyred at Uhud – swore that oath, the people agreed to forgive. They offered them blood money, but they refused. Then they went to the Prophet and he decreed relation. Anas Bin An-Nadr said: “O Messenger of Allah, will you break the front tooth of Ar-Rubai’? No, by the One Who sent you with the truth, it will not be broken!” He said: “O Anas, what Allah has decreed is retaliation.” But the people agreed to forgive her. He complained about that to the Messenger of Allah, and the Messenger of Allah said: “What do you want? Do you want me to tell him to put his hand in your mouth, so that you can bite it like a stallion bites? He was asked: Even foodgrain, Messenger of Allah? He replied: That is the best of our property. So he mounted the pulpit, praised and extolled Allah and said: Allah is characterised by modesty and concealment. Abu Dawud said: Wuhaib transmitted it from Ayyub, from ‘Ikrimah, on the authority of ‘Ali, from the Prophet (ﷺ): and Hammad b. Zaid and Isma’il have transmitted it in a mursal form (i.e the link of the Companion being missing) from Ayyub, from ‘Ikrimah, from the Prophet (ﷺ).
