Sunan al-Nasa'i — The Book of Water

It was narrated from ‘Aishah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to perform Ghusl with a Mudd and Ghusl with approximately a Sa’.

“A man came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and asked him about the times of prayer. He said: ‘Stay with us for these two days.’ Then he told Bilal to say the Iqamah at dawn and he prayed Fajr. Then he told him to do that when the sun had passed its zenith and he prayed Zuhr. Then he told him to do that when the sun was still bright, and he said the Iqamah for ‘Asr. Then he told him to do that when the last part of the sun had dissapeared, and he said the Iqamah for Maghrib. Then he told him to do that when the twilight had disappeared and he said the Iqamah for ‘Isha’. The following day, he prayed Fajr when there was light, then he delayed Zuhr until it was cooler, and waited until it was much cooler before praying ‘Asr but the sun was still clear, so he prayed ‘Asr later than on the first day. Then he prayed Maghrib before the twilight disappeared. Then he told him to say the Iqamah for ‘Isha’ when one-third of the night had passed, and he prayed, then he said: ‘Where is the one who was asking about the times of prayer? The times of your prayer are between the times you have seen.'”

“do not sit on graves.”

“When the Messenger of Allah would lie down, he would place his right hand under his right cheek, and he used to fast on Mondays and Thursday.”

“The sons of Quraizah told me that they were presented to the Messenger of Allah on the Day of Quraizah, and whoever (among them) had reached puberty, or had grown pubic hair, was killed, and whoever had not reached puberty and had not grown pubic hair was left (alive).”

“The Prophet used to visit him when he was in Makkah, and he did not want to die in the land from which he had emigrated. The Prophet said: ‘May Allah have mercy on Sa’d bin ‘Afra.’ He had only one daughter, and he said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, shall I bequeath all my wealth?’ He said: ‘No.’ I said: ‘Half?’ He said: ‘No.’ I said: ‘One-third?’ He said: ‘One-third, and one-third is a lot. For you to leave your heirs independent of means is better than if you were to leave them poor, holding out their hands to people.'”

“There is no vow to commit an act of disobedience and its expiation is the expiation for an oath.”

“O Abu Hamzah, what makes the blood and wealth of a Muslim forbidden?” He said: “Whoever bears witness to La ilaha illallah (there is none worthy of worship except Allah) and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah , faces our Qiblah, prays as we pray, and eats our slaughtered animals, he is a Muslim, and has the same rights and obligations as the Muslims.”

The Messenger of Allah said: “Any woman who has been perfumed with incense should not attend ‘Isha’ the later with us.”

“The Messenger of Allah used to say: ‘Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min ‘ilmin la yanfa’u, wa min qalbin la yakhsha’u, wa min nafsin la tashba’u, wa min du’a’in la yusma’ (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from knowledge that is of no benefit, a heart that is not humble, a soul that is not satisfied and a supplication that is not heard.)'”

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Snuff up water freely unless you are fasting.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: A man who cupped and a man who has himself cupped broke their fast. The narrator Shayban said in his version: AbuQilabah told me that AbuAsma’ ar-Rahbi told him that Thawban, the client of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), told him that he heard the Prophet (ﷺ) say this.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to command us to fast the days of the white (nights): thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth of the month. He said: This is like keeping perpetual fast.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Keep to every sorrel horse with a white blaze and white on the legs, or dark bay with a white blaze. He then mentioned something similar. Muhammad ibn al-Muhajir said: I asked him: Why was a sorrel horse preferred? He replied: Because the Prophet (ﷺ) had sent a contingent, and the man who first brought the news of victory was the rider of a sorrel horse.

The Prophet (ﷺ) came to them in the swelling place of immigrants and a man asked him: Which is the greatest verse of the Qur’an ? The Prophet (ﷺ) replied: Allah, there is no god but He – the Living, the Self-Subsisting Eternal. No slumber can seize Him nor sleep.”

The Companions of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) mentioned this word before him. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Listen, listen! Wearing old clothes is a part of faith, wearing old clothes is a part of faith. Abu Dawud said: He is Abu Umamah b. Tha’labat al-Ansari

The Prophet (ﷺ) as saying: If a man takes an oath of allegiance to a leader, and puts his hand on his hand and does it with the sincerity of his heart, he should obey him as much as possible. If another man comes and contests him, then behead the other one. The narrator ‘Abd al-Rahman said: I asked: Have you heard this from the Messenger of Allah ? He said: My ears heard it and my heart retained it. I said: Your cousin Mu’awiyah orders us that we should do this and do that. He replied: Obey him in the acts of obedience to Allah, and disobey him in the acts of disobedience to Allah.

Nafi’ told that Ibn Umar used to say: I swear by Allah that I do not doubt that Antichrist is Ibn Sayyad.

On his father’s authority, said that his grandfather said: The Prophet (ﷺ) said in his address while he was leaning against the Ka’bah: (The blood-wit) for each finger is ten camels.

Messenger of Allah! A man loves some people, but he cannot do work like their work. He replied; Yes, Abu Dharr, will be with those whom you love. Abu Dharr then repeated it. The Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) also repeated it.

“The Messenger of Allah would fasting during the beginning of every month for three days, and Friday was the least of the days that he did not fast.”

Ibn Umar was asked: In which month did the Messenger of Allah perform Umrah? He said: ‘During Rajab.’ So Aishah said: ‘The Messenger of Allah did not perform Umrah except that he was with him – meaning Ibn Umar – and he did not ever perform Umrah in the month of Rajab.'”

“Zaid, Abu Ayyash asked Sa’d regarding white wheat in exchange for barley: which of them was better ? He said the white, then he forbade that. Sa’d said: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) being asked about selling dried dates for ripe dates and he said to those present: “Will the fresh dates shrink when they are dry ?” They said yes, so he forbade that.'”

] This Hadith is Hasan Sahih, and this is acted upon according to the people of knowledge. It is the view of Ash-Shafi’i and our companions.

“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was asked about a man who fights out of bravery, one who fights out of protection (for himself or others), and one who fought to be seen. Which of them is in the cause of Allah ? He said: ‘Whoever fought so that the Word of Allah is supreme, then he is in Allah’s cause.'” There is something on this topic from ‘Umar. This Hadith is Hasan Sahih.

“Shall I not inform you of the greatest of the major sins?” They said: “Of course O Messenger of Allah(s.a.w)!” He said: “Shirk with Allah disobeying parents, and false testimony.” Or: “False speech” He said: “So the Messenger of Allah(s.a.w) would not stop saying it until we said ( to ourselves): ‘I wish he would be quiet. “

“Indeed I see what you do not see, and I hear what you do not hear. The Heavens moan, and they have the right to moan. There is no spot, the size of four fingers in them, except that there is an angel placing his forehead in it, prostrating to Allah. By Allah! If you knew what I know, then you would laugh little and you would cry much. And you would not taste the pleasures of your women in the beds, and you would go out beseeching Allah. And I wish that I was but a felled tree.” This Hadith is Hasan Gharib. It has been related through routes other than this, that Abu Dharr said: “I wish that I was a felled tree.” And it has been related from Abu Dharr in Mawquf form.

that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “For whomever Allah wants good, he gives him understanding in the religion.

that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Whoever lies upon me” – I think he said – “purposely, then let him take his seat in the Fire.”

that the Prophet (ﷺ) was in his house when a man looked in at him, so he lunged towards him with an arrow head, so the man backed up.

“When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would give the Salam he would do so three times, and when he would say a statement, he would say it three times.”

“When ‘Until the white (light) thread of dawn appears distinct to you from the black thread (of night)’ was revealed, the Prophet (ﷺ) said to me: ‘That only refers to the whiteness of the day from the blackness of the night.'”

“A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: ‘I fondled a woman who lives on the edge of Al-Madinah, and I did with her what is less than intercourse, and here I am, so judge in my case as you will.’ So ‘Umar said to him: ‘Allah covered you, so you should have covered yourself.’ The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) did not give him any reply. The man left but the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sent a man after him to call him. He recited to him: ‘And perform Salat, at the two ends of the day and in some hours of the night. Verily, the good deeds remove the evil deeds. That is a reminder for the mindful (11:114) until the end of the Ayah. A man among the people said: ‘Is this specific for him?’ He (ﷺ) said: ‘No. Rather for all of the people.'” This Hadith is Hasan Sahih. This is how it was reported by Isra’Il from Simãk, from Ibrahim, from ‘Alqamah and Al-Aswad, from ‘Abdullãh from the Prophet , and it is similar. Shu’bah reported it from Simãk , from Ibrahim, from AlAswad, from ‘Abdullãh from the Prophet similarly. Sufyan AthThawri reported the same from Simãk, from Ibrahim, ‘AbdurRahman bin Yazld, from ‘Abdulläh from the Prophet (ﷺ). And the narrations of these people are more correct than the narration of Ath-Thawri. (Another chain) from ‘Abdullãh from the Prophet with similar. (Another chain) from ‘Abdulläh bin Mas’üd from the Prophet (ﷺ) with similar in meaning, but he did not mention “from Al-A’mash” in it. And Sulaimãn At-Taimi reported this Hadith from Abu ‘Uthmãn An-Nahdi, from Ibn Mas’ud from the Prophet .

the Prophet said: “Allah has revealed to me Ayat the likes of which have not been seen: “Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind…” until the end of the Surat. “Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of Al-Falaq…” until the end of the Surat.

“It was said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, which supplication is most likely to be listened to?’ He said: ‘(During) the last part of the night, and at the end of the obligatory prayers.’”

“Be constant with: ‘O Possessor of Majesty and Honor (Yā Dhal-Jalāli wal-Ikrām).’”

“O Allah! Verily, I ask You for the bounty’s completion (Allāhumma, innī as’aluka tamāman-ni`mah).” So he (ﷺ) said: “What thing is the bounty’s completion?” He said: “A supplication that I made, that I hope for good by it.” He (ﷺ) said: “Indeed, part of the bounty’s completion is the entrance into Paradise, and salvation from the Fire.” And he (ﷺ) heard a man while he was saying: “O Possessor of Majesty and Honor (Yā Dhal-Jalāli wal-Ikrām)” So he (ﷺ) said: “You have been responded to, so ask.” And the Prophet (ﷺ) heard a man while he was saying: “O Allah, indeed, I ask You for patience (Allāhumma, innī as’alukaṣ-ṣabr)” He (ﷺ) said: “You have asked Allah for trial, so ask him for Al-`Āfiyah.”

“I heard Abu Wa’il say: ‘`Abdullah bin Mas`ud said’ and I said to him: ‘Did you hear it from `Abdullah?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ And he narrated it in Marfu` form that he said: ‘There is none with more Ghirah than Allah, and due to this He prohibited the lewd sins, that which is apparent of them and that which is hidden. And there is none to whom praise is more beloved than Allah, and due to this, He praised Himself.’”

“When anyone of you is performing prayer, he should not let anyone pass in front of him. If he insists then let him fight him, for he has a Qarin (devil-companion) with him.”

“The Prophet (ﷺ) sent me on an errand, then I caught up with him while he was performing prayer, and I greeted him. He gestured to me, then when he finished, he called me and said: ‘You greeted me before, but I was performing prayer.’”

“When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) suffered the agonies of death that he suffered, Fatimah said: ‘O my father, what a severe agony!’ The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Your father will suffer no more agony after this day. There has come to your father that which no one can avoid, the death that everyone will encounter until the Day of Resurrection.’”

“Hamzah Al-Aslami asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): ‘I am fasting, should I fast while traveling?’ The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘If you wish, then fast, and if you wish, then break your fast.’”

Awf bin Malik Al-Ashja’i said: “The Messenger of Allah went out, and a man had hung up one or more bunches of dates. He (the Prophet) had a stick in his hand and he started hitting that bunch of dates repeatedly, saying: ‘If the owner of these dates wanted to give in charity, he should have given something better than these. The owner of this charity will eat rotten and shriveled dates on the Day of Resurrection.’ ”

the Messenger of Allah divorced Hafsah then took her back.

the Messenger of Allah said: What is wrong with people who play with the limits imposed by Allah, and one of them says: “I divorce you, I take you back, I divorce you?”

“I was a man who had a lot of desire for women, and I do not think there was any man who had as great a share of that as me. When Ramadan began, I declared Zihar upon my wife (to last) until Ramadan ended. While she was talking to me one night, part of her body became uncovered. I jumped on her and had intercourse with her. The next morning I went to my people and told them, and said to them: ‘Ask the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) for me.’ They said: ‘We will not do that, lest Allah reveal Quran concerning us or the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) says, something about us, and it will be a lasting source of disgrace for us. Rather we will leave you to deal with it yourself. Go yourself and tell the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) about your problem.’ So I went out and when I came to him, I told him what happened. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Did you really do that?’ I said: ‘I really did that, and here I am, O Messenger of Allah. (ﷺ) I will bear Allah’s ruling on me with patience.’ He said: ‘Free a slave.’ I said: ‘By the One Who sent you with the truth, I do not own anything but myself.’ He said: ‘Fast for two consecutive months.’ I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, the thing that happened to me was only because of fasting.’ He said: ‘Then give charity, or feed sixty poor persons.’ I said: ‘By the One Who sent you with the truttu we spent last night with no dinner.’ He said: ‘Then go to the collector of charity of Banu Zuraiq, and tell him to give you something, then feed sixty poor persons, and benefit from the rest.'”

“Whoever can afford it, but does not offer a sacrifice, let him not come near our prayer place.”

“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbade sacrificing the Muqabalah, the Mudabarah, the Sharqa’, the Kharqa’ and the Jad’a’.”*

It was narrated from Sa’d, the freed slave of Abu Bakr – and Sa’d used to serve the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and he liked this Hadith – that the Prophet (ﷺ) forbade eating two dates at once.

“There will be tribulation in which a man will be a believer in the morning and a disbeliever by evening, except the one to whom Allah grants knowledge.”

“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Whoever among you wakes up physically healthy, feeling safe and secure within himself, with food for the day, it is as if he acquired the whole world.’”

“Then the Prophet (ﷺ) gave me seven dates, one date for each man.”
