Sunan al-Nasa'i — The Book of Purification

“A Bedouin came to the Prophet (ﷺ) to ask him about Wudu’, so he showed him how to perform Wudu’, washing each part three times, then he said: ‘This is Wudu’. Whoever does more than that has done badly, done to extremes and done wrong.'”

“I entered upon ‘Aishah and asked her: ‘Did the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) perform Ghusl at the beginning of the night or at the end?’ She said: ‘Both. Sometimes he performed Ghusl at the beginning and sometimes at the end.’ I said: ‘Praise be to Allah who has made the matter flexible.'”

“We stopped to camp at the end of the night with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and we did not wake up until the sun had risen. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Let each man take hold of his camel’s head (and leave), for the Shaitan was here in this place with us.’ We did that, then he called for water and performed Wudu’, then he prayed two Rak’ahs, then the Iqamah was said and he prayed Al-Ghadah (Fajr).”

“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Whoever eats of this plant’ – the first time he said ‘garlic’ then he said, ‘garlic, onions and leeks’ – ‘let him not approach us in our Masjids, for the angels are offended by that which offends mankinds.'” In Fath, Al-Bari, Ibn Hajar is of the opinion that it was Ibn Juraij who was talking, explaining that ‘Ata’ – who reported it from Jabir – narrated it both ways.

Mu’awiyah wrote to Al-Mughirah asking him to write him a hadith that he had heard from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). Al-Mughirah wrote to him (Saying): “I heard him say, when he finished the prayer: ‘La Ilaha Illallah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulk wa lahul-hamd wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadir (There is none worthy of worship except Allah (ﷺ) alone with no partner or associate. He is the Dominion and to Him be all praise, and He is able to do all things) three times.”

“Whoever prays twelve rak’ahs in a day and prays before Zuhr, Allah (SWT) will build for him a house in Paradise.”

“I heard Abu Dharr, at Ar-Rabadhah, saying: ‘The Messenger of Allah said: if you want to fast at any time during the monthm then fast on the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth.”‘

“No Sadaqah is due on less than five Dhawd (head of camel), and no Sadaqah is due on less than five Awaq, and no Sadaqah is due on less than five Awsuq.”

“O Messenger of Allah, I have given this son of mine a slave who belonged to me as a present.” The Messenger of Allah said: “Have you given a present to all your children?” He said: “No.” He said: “Then take (your present) back.”

“It is not permissible for anyone to give a gift then take it back, except a father.” Tawus said: “I used to hear the boys say: ‘O you who goes back to his vomit!’ But I did not realize that the Messenger of Allah had said this as a parable, until we heard that he used to say: ‘The likeness of the one who gives a gift then takes it back, is that of the dog which eats its vomit.'”

The Messenger of Allah , and they face our Qiblah, eat our slaughtered animals, and pray as we do, then their blood and wealth become forbidden except for a right that is due, and they will have the same rights and obligations as the Muslims.”

The Messenger of Allah said: “We will fight the people until they say La ilaha illallah. If they say La ilaha illallah then their blood and their wealth become forbidden to us, except for a right that is due, and their reckoning will be with Allah.”

“The first matter concerning which scores will be settled among the people on the Day of Resurrection will be bloodshed.”

“The Messenger of Allah said: ‘Whoever changes his religion, kill him.'”

“Defaming a Muslim is evildoing and fighting him is Kufr.” (Sahih Mawquf)

The Prophet said: “If two Muslims confront each other with swords and one of them kills the other, they will both be in Hell.”

“We did not give our pledge to the Messenger of Allah for death, rather we pledged not to flee (from battle).”

a slave belonging to some poor people cut off the ear of a slave belonging to some rich people. They came to the Prophet but he did not give them anything.

“Ar-Rubai broke the front tooth of a girls, and they asked them (her people) to forgive her, but they refused. They offered them blood money, but they refused. Then they went to the Prophet and he decreed relation. Anas Bin An-Nadr said: “O Messenger of Allah, will you break the front tooth of Ar-Rubai’? No, by the One Who sent you with the truth, it will not be broken!” He said: “O Anas, what Allah has decreed is retaliation.” But the people agreed to forgive her. He (the Prophet) said: “There are among the slaves of Allah who, if they swear by Allah, Allah fulfills their oath.”

“The accident that resembles on purpose, meaning (killing) with a stick or a whip, (for which the Diyah is) one hundred camels, of which forty should be (pregnant she-camels), with their young in their wombs.”

“I heard Jabir bin Samurah being asked about the gray hairs of the Prophet . He said: ‘If he put oil on his head they could not be seen, but if he did not put oil on his head, they could be seen.'”

“I asked ‘Aishah: ‘Did the Messenger of Allah wear perfume?’ She said: ‘Yes, the perfumes used by men: Musk and amber.'”

“Umar bin ‘Abdul-‘Aziz wrote to us (saying): ‘Do not drink At-Tila’ (thickened grape juice) until two-third of it are gone and one-third remains, and every intoxicant is unlawful.'”

The Prophet (ﷺ) used to observe i’tikaf during the last ten days of Ramadan. One year he did not observe i’tikaf. When the next year came, he observed i’tikaf for twenty nights (i.e. days).

Anas bin Malik reported the Apostle of Allaah(ﷺ) as saying “ I am commanded to fight with the polytheists. The rest of the tradition is to the same effect as mentioned above.”

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: After some time the lands of the non-Arabs will be conquered for you, and there you will find houses called hammamat (hot baths). so men should not enter them (to wash) except in lower garments, and forbid the women to enter them except a sick or one who is in a child-bed.

I asked Ibn ‘Abbas (about the verse relating to intentional homicide in Surat An-Nisa’) He said: When the verse “Those who invoke not with Allah any other god, nor slay such life as Allah had made sacred, except for just cause” was revealed, the polytheists of Mecca said: We have killed the soul prohibited by Allah, invoked another god along with Allah for worship, and committed shameful deeds. So Allah revealed the verse “unless he repents, believes, and works righteous deeds, for Allah will change the evil of such persons into good.” This is meant for them. As regards the verse “if a man kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell” He said: If a man knows the command of Islam and intentionally kills a believer, his repentance wil not be accepted. I then mentioned it to Mujahid. He said: “Except the one who is ashamed (of his sin).”

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) asked Ma’iz b. Malik : Is what I have heard about you is true? He said: What have you heard about me? He said: I have heard that you have had intercourse with a girl belonging to the family of so and so. He said: Yes. He then testified four times. He (The prophet) then gave order regarding him and he was stoned to death.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) gave judgment that a male or a female slave, or a horse or a mule should be paid for a miscarriage. Abu Dawud said: Hammad b. Salamah and Khalid b. ‘Abd Allah transmitted this tradition from Muhammad b. ‘Amr, but they did not mention “or a horse or a mule”

“Allah’s Messenger ordered me to call the Adhan for the Fajr prayer. I called the Adhan, then Bilal wanted to call the lqamah. Allah’s Messenger said: ‘Indeed the brother from Suda’ has called the Adhan, and whoever calls the Adhan he calls the Iqamah.'”

“The Messenger of Allah(s.a.w) came out to us while we were discussing about Al-Qadar. He became angry such that his face became red, as if a pomegranate was bursting through his cheeks. He said: ‘Is this what I ordered you to do?’ – or: ‘Is this what I have been sent to you with? The people before you were only ruined when they differed about this matter. I order you to not debate about it.'”. (Daif))

regarding the saying of Allah the Most High: Verily, those who call you from behind the dwellings, most of them have no sense (49:4). He said: “A man stood and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! Indeed my praise (of others) is worthwhile and my censure is appropriate.’ So the Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘That is for Allah, the Mighty and Sublime.'”

“When Allah created Adam, He breathed the soul into him, then he sneezed and said: ‘All praise is due to Allah.’ So he praised Allah by His permission. Then His Lord said to him: ‘May Allah have mercy upon you O Adam. Go to those angels – to that gathering of them sitting – so say: ‘As-Salamu alaikum.’ They said ‘Wa Alaikas-Salamu Wa Rahmatullah’. Then he returned to his Lord, He said: ‘This is your greeting and the greeting of your children among each other.’ Then Allah said to him – while His Two Hands were closed – ‘Choose which of them you wish.’ He said: ‘I chose the right My Lord and both of the Hands of my Lord are right, blessed.’ Then He extended it, and there was Adam and his offspring in it.’ So he said: ‘What are these O my Lord?’ He said: ‘These are your offspring?’ Each one of them had his age written between his eyes. But among them there was a man who was the most illuminating of them – or among the most illuminated of them. He said: ‘O Lord! Who is this?’ He said: ‘This is your son Dawud, I wrote forty years for him.’ He said: ‘O Lord! Add to his age.’ He said: ‘That is what I have written for him.’ He said: ‘O Lord! Give him sixty of my years.’ He said: ‘So you shall have it.’” He said: “Then, he resided in Paradise as long as Allah willed, then he was cast from it, so Adam was counting for himself.” He said: “So the Angel of death came to him, and Adam said to him: ‘You are hasty, one-thousand years were written for me.’ He said: ‘Of course! But you gave sixty years to your son Dawud.’ So he rejected, and his offspring rejected, and he forgot, and his offspring forgot.” He said: “So ever since that day, what is written and witnessed has been decreed.”

“Allah’s greatest name is in these two Ayah: ‘And your deity is One deity, there is none who has the right to be worshipped but He, Ar-Raḥmān, Ar-Raḥīm.’ And the Opening of Al-`Imrān: ‘Alif. Lām. Mīm. Allah, None has the right to be worshipped but He, the Ever living, the Sustainer.’”

A woman asked ‘Aishah: “Can a woman who is menstruating, dye her hands?” She said: “We were with the Prophet and we used to dye our hands, and he did not tell us not to do that.”

“You are the most deserving of that, you were the Companion of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).” But he refused and said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: ‘Whoever leads the people and gets it right, the prayer will be for him and for them, but if he falls short, then that will be counted against him but not against them.”

“I heard the Messenger of Allah say: ‘I wanted to forbid intercourse with a nursing mother, but then (I saw that) the Persians and the Romans do this, and it does not kill their children.’ And I heard him say/when he was asked about coitus interruptus: ‘It is the disguised form of b.rryirg children alive.”

“I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, my cousin comes to me and I swear that I will not give him anything or uphold the ties of kinship with him.’ He said: ‘Offer expiation for what you swore about.'”

“Whoever commits a sin in this world and is punished for it, Allah (STW) is too just to repeat the punishment for his slave (in the hereafter). And whoever commits a sin in this world and Allah conceals him, Allah is too generous to go back to something that He has pardoned.”

“There is goodness in the forelocks of horses” – or he said: “There is goodness tied in the forelocks of horses.” Suhail (one of the narrators) said: “I am not certain of” – “until the Day of Resurrection. And horses are of three types: those that bring reward to a man, those that are a means of protection for a man, and those that are a burden (of sin) for a man. As for those that bring reward, a man keeps them in the cause of Allah and keeps them constantly ready (for Jihad), so they do not take any fodder into their stomachs but a reward will be written for him, and if he puts them out to pasture, they do not eat anything but reward will be written for him. If he gives them to drink from a flowing river, for every drop that enters their stomachs there will be reward,” (continuing) until he mentioned reward in conjunction with their urine and droppings, and even when they run here and there by themselves, for each step they take a reward will be written for him – ‘As for those that are a means of protection, a man keeps them because they are a source of dignity and adornment, but he does not forget the rights of their backs and stomachs (i.e., their right not to be overworked and their right to be fed) whether at times of their difficulty or ease. As for those that bring a burden (of sin), the one who keeps them for purposes of wrongdoing or for pomp and show before people, is the one for whom they bring a burden of sin.”

“For a boy there should be an ‘Aqiqah, so shed blood for him and remove the harm from him.”

“Offer an ‘Aqiqah for the boy, but do not smear his head with blood.”

“The Prophet (ﷺ) was given a gift of some grapes from Ta’if. He called me and said: ‘Take this bunch of grapes and give it to your mother.’ But I ate it before I gave it to her. A few night later he said to me: ‘What happened to the bunch of grapes? Did you give it to your mother?’ I said: ‘No, So he called me treacherous.’”
