Love Your Neighbor

A short lesson on the people who live right next to us - and why being kind to them is so important in Islam.

A short lesson on the people who live right next to us – and why being kind to them is so important in Islam.

Come here, my sweet one. Look out the window with me for a moment. See the house next door? See the apartment across the hall? Those are our neighbors. We may not always know their names, and they may live very different lives from us – but in Islam, neighbors are very special. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) talked about how to treat neighbors so often, and so warmly, that his companions remembered it for the rest of their lives. Tonight I want to share three of his teachings with you, because being a good neighbor is one of the most beautiful ways we can please Allah.

1. Jibril Kept Reminding Him

The Prophet (peace be upon him) once shared something amazing with his companions. He said that the angel Jibril (peace be upon him) – the very angel who brought the Quran from Allah – kept coming to him to talk about neighbors. Again. And again. And again. Jibril came back so many times to remind the Prophet to be kind to his neighbors that the Prophet (peace be upon him) started to wonder if Allah was going to make neighbors part of our family – like brothers and sisters who share an inheritance.

What it means for us: Imagine that, sweetheart. Allah cares so much about how we treat our neighbors that He sent His angel back over and over. That tells us how very important they are – and how we should never treat them as strangers.

2. Do Not Hurt Your Neighbor

The Prophet (peace be upon him) once said something very strong. He said a person is not really a complete believer if their neighbor is not safe from them. That means we should never be loud and rude on purpose, never take their things, never say mean words about them or to them, never let our pets bother them. Being a good Muslim is not just about how we act inside our house – it is also about how we act toward the people who live next to us.

What it means for us: Being a good neighbor starts with a little promise, sweetheart: I will not be the reason my neighbor has a bad day. That is one of the smallest, simplest steps toward being the kind of Muslim Allah loves.

3. Share Your Soup

The Prophet (peace be upon him) also gave us a sweet little tip – so simple, even a child can do it. He told one of his companions: when you cook soup, just add a little extra water to it, and then share some with your neighbor. He did not say make a fancy meal. He did not say spend a lot of money. He just said: a little more water, a little extra to share, and you have given a gift that Allah loves.

What it means for us: Isnt that lovely, my love? Just a small warm bowl, given with a smile, can become the start of a friendship that lasts for years. That is the kind of generosity Allah teaches us – the kind that fits inside an everyday moment.

A Little Thought Before Bed

So this week, my love, lets pick one neighbor together and do one kind thing. Maybe a little plate of cookies we bake together. Maybe a smile and a hello when we pass them. Maybe just learning their name and saying it with kindness. That is exactly what the Prophet (peace be upon him) would want us to do – and Allah will see every small step we take.

Ya Allah, make me a neighbor whose smile is a blessing, and whose presence brings peace to the people around me. Ameen.
