1 Prophet enjoined to pray

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلۡمُزَّمِّلُ ۝١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

O thou, the one who is wrapped,

yāayyuhā l-muzamil

قُمِ ٱلَّیۡلَ إِلَّا قَلِیلࣰا ۝٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

stand up during the night, but for a little part,

qumi al-layla illā qalīla

نِّصۡفَهُۥۤ أَوِ ٱنقُصۡ مِنۡهُ قَلِیلًا ۝٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

for half of it or reduce it a little.

niṣ'fahu awi unquṣ min'hu qalīla

أَوۡ زِدۡ عَلَیۡهِ وَرَتِّلِ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ تَرۡتِیلًا ۝٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Or increase it and chant the Quran, a good chanting,

aw zid ʿalayhi warattili l-qur'āna tartīla

إِنَّا سَنُلۡقِی عَلَیۡكَ قَوۡلࣰا ثَقِیلًا ۝٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

for We will cast on thee a weighty saying.

innā sanul'qī ʿalayka qawlan thaqīla

إِنَّ نَاشِئَةَ ٱلَّیۡلِ هِیَ أَشَدُّ وَطۡءࣰا وَأَقۡوَمُ قِیلًا ۝٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Truly, one who begins in the night, is when impression is strongest and speech more upright.

inna nāshi-ata al-layli hiya ashaddu waṭan wa-aqwamu qīla

إِنَّ لَكَ فِی ٱلنَّهَارِ سَبۡحࣰا طَوِیلࣰا ۝٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Truly, for thee in the daytime is a lengthy occupation.

inna laka fī l-nahāri sabḥan ṭawīla

وَٱذۡكُرِ ٱسۡمَ رَبِّكَ وَتَبَتَّلۡ إِلَیۡهِ تَبۡتِیلࣰا ۝٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And remember thou the Name of thy Lord. And devote thyself to Him with total devotion.

wa-udh'kuri is'ma rabbika watabattal ilayhi tabtīla

رَّبُّ ٱلۡمَشۡرِقِ وَٱلۡمَغۡرِبِ لَاۤ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ فَٱتَّخِذۡهُ وَكِیلࣰا ۝٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

The Lord of the East and of the West, there is no god but He. So take Him to thyself as thy Trustee.

rabbu l-mashriqi wal-maghribi lā ilāha illā huwa fa-ittakhidh'hu wakīla

وَٱصۡبِرۡ عَلَىٰ مَا یَقُولُونَ وَٱهۡجُرۡهُمۡ هَجۡرࣰا جَمِیلࣰا ۝١٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And have thou patience with regard to what they say and abandon them with a graceful abandoning.

wa-iṣ'bir ʿalā mā yaqūlūna wa-uh'jur'hum hajran jamīla

وَذَرۡنِی وَٱلۡمُكَذِّبِینَ أُو۟لِی ٱلنَّعۡمَةِ وَمَهِّلۡهُمۡ قَلِیلًا ۝١١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Forsake to Me the ones who deny, those imbued with prosperity and respite them for a little.

wadharnī wal-mukadhibīna ulī l-naʿmati wamahhil'hum qalīla

إِنَّ لَدَیۡنَاۤ أَنكَالࣰا وَجَحِیمࣰا ۝١٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Truly, with Us are shackles and hellfire

inna ladaynā ankālan wajaḥīma

وَطَعَامࣰا ذَا غُصَّةࣲ وَعَذَابًا أَلِیمࣰا ۝١٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

and food which sticks in the throat and chokes and a painful punishment.

waṭaʿāman dhā ghuṣṣatin waʿadhāban alīma

یَوۡمَ تَرۡجُفُ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ وَٱلۡجِبَالُ وَكَانَتِ ٱلۡجِبَالُ كَثِیبࣰا مَّهِیلًا ۝١٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

On a Day when the earth will quake and the mountains, and the mountains will become a poured forth heap of sand.

yawma tarjufu l-arḍu wal-jibālu wakānati l-jibālu kathīban mahīla

إِنَّاۤ أَرۡسَلۡنَاۤ إِلَیۡكُمۡ رَسُولࣰا شَـٰهِدًا عَلَیۡكُمۡ كَمَاۤ أَرۡسَلۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنَ رَسُولࣰا ۝١٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Truly, We sent you a Messenger, one who bears witness to you, as We sent to Pharaoh a Messenger.

innā arsalnā ilaykum rasūlan shāhidan ʿalaykum kamā arsalnā ilā fir'ʿawna rasūla

فَعَصَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنُ ٱلرَّسُولَ فَأَخَذۡنَـٰهُ أَخۡذࣰا وَبِیلࣰا ۝١٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

But Pharaoh rebelled against the Messenger so We took him a taking remorselessly.

faʿaṣā fir'ʿawnu l-rasūla fa-akhadhnāhu akhdhan wabīla

فَكَیۡفَ تَتَّقُونَ إِن كَفَرۡتُمۡ یَوۡمࣰا یَجۡعَلُ ٱلۡوِلۡدَ ٰنَ شِیبًا ۝١٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

How will you fend off a day if you were ungrateful, that will make the children gray haired?

fakayfa tattaqūna in kafartum yawman yajʿalu l-wil'dāna shība

ٱلسَّمَاۤءُ مُنفَطِرُۢ بِهِۦۚ كَانَ وَعۡدُهُۥ مَفۡعُولًا ۝١٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

The heaven will be that which is split apart from it. His promise had been one that is accomplished.

al-samāu munfaṭirun bihi kāna waʿduhu mafʿūla

إِنَّ هَـٰذِهِۦ تَذۡكِرَةࣱۖ فَمَن شَاۤءَ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ سَبِیلًا ۝١٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Truly, this is an admonition; so let whoever willed take himself a way to his Lord.

inna hādhihi tadhkiratun faman shāa ittakhadha ilā rabbihi sabīla

2 Prayer enjoined on Muslims

۞ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ یَعۡلَمُ أَنَّكَ تَقُومُ أَدۡنَىٰ مِن ثُلُثَیِ ٱلَّیۡلِ وَنِصۡفَهُۥ وَثُلُثَهُۥ وَطَاۤىِٕفَةࣱ مِّنَ ٱلَّذِینَ مَعَكَۚ وَٱللَّهُ یُقَدِّرُ ٱلَّیۡلَ وَٱلنَّهَارَۚ عَلِمَ أَن لَّن تُحۡصُوهُ فَتَابَ عَلَیۡكُمۡۖ فَٱقۡرَءُوا۟ مَا تَیَسَّرَ مِنَ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانِۚ عَلِمَ أَن سَیَكُونُ مِنكُم مَّرۡضَىٰ وَءَاخَرُونَ یَضۡرِبُونَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ یَبۡتَغُونَ مِن فَضۡلِ ٱللَّهِ وَءَاخَرُونَ یُقَـٰتِلُونَ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِۖ فَٱقۡرَءُوا۟ مَا تَیَسَّرَ مِنۡهُۚ وَأَقِیمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتُوا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَأَقۡرِضُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ قَرۡضًا حَسَنࣰاۚ وَمَا تُقَدِّمُوا۟ لِأَنفُسِكُم مِّنۡ خَیۡرࣲ تَجِدُوهُ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ هُوَ خَیۡرࣰا وَأَعۡظَمَ أَجۡرࣰاۚ وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَۖ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمُۢ ۝٢٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Truly, thy Lord knows that thou be standing up for nearly two thirds of the nighttime, or a half of it or a third of it along with a section of those who are with thee. And God ordains the nighttime and the daytime. He knew that you would not be able to keep count of it, so He turned towards you in forgiveness, then recite of the Quran as much as was easy. He knew that some of you are sick and others travel on the earth looking for the grace of God and others fight in the way of God. So recite of it as much as was easy. And perform the formal prayer and give the purifying alms and lend to God a fairer loan. For whatever of good you put forward for your souls, you will find the same with God. It is good and a sublime compensation. And ask God for forgiveness. Truly, God is Forgiving, Compassionate.

inna rabbaka yaʿlamu annaka taqūmu adnā min thuluthayi al-layli waniṣ'fahu wathuluthahu waṭāifatun mina alladhīna maʿaka wal-lahu yuqaddiru al-layla wal-nahāra ʿalima an lan tuḥ'ṣūhu fatāba ʿalaykum fa-iq'raū mā tayassara mina l-qur'āni ʿalima an sayakūnu minkum marḍā waākharūna yaḍribūna fī l-arḍi yabtaghūna min faḍli l-lahi waākharūna yuqātilūna fī sabīli l-lahi fa-iq'raū mā tayassara min'hu wa-aqīmū l-ṣalata waātū l-zakata wa-aqriḍū l-laha qarḍan ḥasanan wamā tuqaddimū li-anfusikum min khayrin tajidūhu ʿinda l-lahi huwa khayran wa-aʿẓama ajran wa-is'taghfirū l-laha inna l-laha ghafūrun raḥīmu
