وَلَىِٕنۡ أَخَّرۡنَا عَنۡهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابَ إِلَىٰۤ أُمَّةࣲ مَّعۡدُودَةࣲ لَّیَقُولُنَّ مَا یَحۡبِسُهُۥۤۗ أَلَا یَوۡمَ یَأۡتِیهِمۡ لَیۡسَ مَصۡرُوفًا عَنۡهُمۡ وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And if We hold back from them the punishment for a limited time, they will surely say, "What detains it?" Unquestionably, on the Day it comes to them, it will not be averted from them, and they will be enveloped by what they used to ridicule
Abdel Haleem: If We defer their punishment for a determined time, they are sure to say, ‘What is holding it back?’ But on the Day it comes upon them, nothing will divert it from them; what they mocked will be all around them
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And if We delay for them the doom until a reckoned time, they will surely say: What withholdeth it? Verily on the day when it cometh unto them, it cannot be averted from them, and that which they derided will surround them
The Bee 16:34 Verb
فَأَصَابَهُمۡ سَیِّءَاتُ مَا عَمِلُوا۟ وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝٣٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): So they were struck by the evil consequences of what they did and were enveloped by what they used to ridicule
Abdel Haleem: So the evil they had done hit them and they were surrounded by the very thing they had mocked
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: So that the evils of what they did smote them, and that which they used to mock surrounded them
The Prophets 21:41 Verb
وَلَقَدِ ٱسۡتُهۡزِئَ بِرُسُلࣲ مِّن قَبۡلِكَ فَحَاقَ بِٱلَّذِینَ سَخِرُوا۟ مِنۡهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝٤١
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And already were messengers ridiculed before you, but those who mocked them were enveloped by what they used to ridicule
Abdel Haleem: Messengers before you [Muhammad] were also ridiculed, but those who mocked them were overwhelmed in the end by the very thing they had mocked
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Messengers before thee, indeed, were mocked, but that whereat they mocked surrounded those who scoffed at them
The Angels, Originator, The Creator 35:43 Verb
ٱسۡتِكۡبَارࣰا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَكۡرَ ٱلسَّیِّىِٕۚ وَلَا یَحِیقُ ٱلۡمَكۡرُ ٱلسَّیِّئُ إِلَّا بِأَهۡلِهِۦۚ فَهَلۡ یَنظُرُونَ إِلَّا سُنَّتَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَۚ فَلَن تَجِدَ لِسُنَّتِ ٱللَّهِ تَبۡدِیلࣰاۖ وَلَن تَجِدَ لِسُنَّتِ ٱللَّهِ تَحۡوِیلًا ۝٤٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): [Due to] arrogance in the land and plotting of evil; but the evil plot does not encompass except its own people. Then do they await except the way of the former peoples? But you will never find in the way of Allah any change, and you will never find in the way of Allah any alteration
Abdel Haleem: became more arrogant in the land, and intensified their plotting of evil- the plotting of evil only rebounds on those who plot. Do they expect anything but what happened to earlier people? You will never find any change in God’s practice; you will never find any deviation there
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: (Shown in their) behaving arrogantly in the land and plotting evil; and the evil plot encloseth but the men who make it. Then, can they expect aught save the treatment of the folk of old? Thou wilt not find for Allah's way of treatment any substitute, nor wilt thou find for Allah's way of treatment aught of power to change
The Troops, Throngs, The Companies 39:48 Verb
وَبَدَا لَهُمۡ سَیِّءَاتُ مَا كَسَبُوا۟ وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝٤٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And there will appear to them the evils they had earned, and they will be enveloped by what they used to ridicule
Abdel Haleem: the evil of their deeds will become plain to them, and they will be overwhelmed by that at which they used to laugh
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And the evils that they earned will appear unto them, and that whereat they used to scoff will surround them
The Forgiver, The Forgiving One 40:45 Verb
فَوَقَىٰهُ ٱللَّهُ سَیِّءَاتِ مَا مَكَرُوا۟ۖ وَحَاقَ بِءَالِ فِرۡعَوۡنَ سُوۤءُ ٱلۡعَذَابِ ۝٤٥
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): So Allah protected him from the evils they plotted, and the people of Pharaoh were enveloped by the worst of punishment
Abdel Haleem: So God saved him from the harm they planned. A terrible punishment engulfed Pharaoh’s people
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: So Allah warded off from him the evils which they plotted, while a dreadful doom encompassed Pharaoh's folk
The Forgiver, The Forgiving One 40:83 Verb
فَلَمَّا جَاۤءَتۡهُمۡ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِ فَرِحُوا۟ بِمَا عِندَهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡعِلۡمِ وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝٨٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And when their messengers came to them with clear proofs, they [merely] rejoiced in what they had of knowledge, but they were enveloped by what they used to ridicule
Abdel Haleem: When messengers came to them with clear signs, they revelled in the knowledge they had, and so they were engulfed by the very punishment they mocked
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And when their messengers brought them clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty) they exulted in the knowledge they (themselves) possessed. And that which they were wont to mock befell them
The Kneeling, Crouching 45:33 Verb
وَبَدَا لَهُمۡ سَیِّءَاتُ مَا عَمِلُوا۟ وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝٣٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And the evil consequences of what they did will appear to them, and they will be enveloped by what they used to ridicule
Abdel Haleem: The evil of their actions will [then] become clear to them. The punishment they mocked will engulf them
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And the evils of what they did will appear unto them, and that which they used to deride will befall them
The Wind-curved Sandhills, The Dunes, The Sandhills 46:26 Verb
وَلَقَدۡ مَكَّنَّـٰهُمۡ فِیمَاۤ إِن مَّكَّنَّـٰكُمۡ فِیهِ وَجَعَلۡنَا لَهُمۡ سَمۡعࣰا وَأَبۡصَـٰرࣰا وَأَفۡءِدَةࣰ فَمَاۤ أَغۡنَىٰ عَنۡهُمۡ سَمۡعُهُمۡ وَلَاۤ أَبۡصَـٰرُهُمۡ وَلَاۤ أَفۡءِدَتُهُم مِّن شَیۡءٍ إِذۡ كَانُوا۟ یَجۡحَدُونَ بِءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝٢٦
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And We had certainly established them in such as We have not established you, and We made for them hearing and vision and hearts. But their hearing and vision and hearts availed them not from anything [of the punishment] when they were [continually] rejecting the signs of Allah ; and they were enveloped by what they used to ridicule
Abdel Haleem: We had established them in a way we have not established you [people of Mecca]; We gave them hearing, sight, and hearts, yet their hearing, sight, and hearts were of no use to them, since they denied God’s revelations. They were overwhelmed by the punishment they had mocked
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: And verily We had empowered them with that wherewith We have not empowered you, and had assigned them ears and eyes and hearts; but their ears and eyes and hearts availed them naught since they denied the revelations of Allah; and what they used to mock befell them
Cattle, Livestock 6:10 Verb
وَلَقَدِ ٱسۡتُهۡزِئَ بِرُسُلࣲ مِّن قَبۡلِكَ فَحَاقَ بِٱلَّذِینَ سَخِرُوا۟ مِنۡهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝١٠
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International): And already were messengers ridiculed before you, but those who mocked them were enveloped by that which they used to ridicule
Abdel Haleem: Messengers have been mocked before you [Muhammad], and those who mocked them were engulfed by the very punishment they had mocked
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall: Messengers (of Allah) have been derided before thee, but that whereat they scoffed surrounded such of them as did deride
