The root "zhq" primarily means for a soul to depart with difficulty, or for something to perish or become void. It also describes an arrow overshooting its target or a horse outstripping others.

وَقُلۡ جَاۤءَ ٱلۡحَقُّ وَزَهَقَ ٱلۡبَـٰطِلُۚ إِنَّ ٱلۡبَـٰطِلَ كَانَ زَهُوقࣰا ٨١
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International):
And say, "Truth has come, and falsehood has departed. Indeed is falsehood, [by nature], ever bound to depart."
Abdel Haleem:
And say, ‘The truth has come, and falsehood has passed away: falsehood is bound to pass away.’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall:
And say: Truth hath come and falsehood hath vanished away. Lo! falsehood is ever bound to vanish
Repentance 9:55
Verb
فَلَا تُعۡجِبۡكَ أَمۡوَ ٰلُهُمۡ وَلَاۤ أَوۡلَـٰدُهُمۡۚ إِنَّمَا یُرِیدُ ٱللَّهُ لِیُعَذِّبَهُم بِهَا فِی ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَتَزۡهَقَ أَنفُسُهُمۡ وَهُمۡ كَـٰفِرُونَ ٥٥
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International):
So let not their wealth or their children impress you. Allah only intends to punish them through them in worldly life and that their souls should depart [at death] while they are disbelievers
Abdel Haleem:
So [Prophet] do not let their possessions or their children impress you: through these God intends to punish them in this world and for their souls to depart while they disbelieve
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall:
So let not their riches nor their children please thee (O Muhammad). Allah thereby intendeth but to punish them in the life of the world and that their souls shall pass away while they are disbelievers
Repentance 9:85
Verb
وَلَا تُعۡجِبۡكَ أَمۡوَ ٰلُهُمۡ وَأَوۡلَـٰدُهُمۡۚ إِنَّمَا یُرِیدُ ٱللَّهُ أَن یُعَذِّبَهُم بِهَا فِی ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَتَزۡهَقَ أَنفُسُهُمۡ وَهُمۡ كَـٰفِرُونَ ٨٥

The Prophets 21:18
Noun
بَلۡ نَقۡذِفُ بِٱلۡحَقِّ عَلَى ٱلۡبَـٰطِلِ فَیَدۡمَغُهُۥ فَإِذَا هُوَ زَاهِقࣱۚ وَلَكُمُ ٱلۡوَیۡلُ مِمَّا تَصِفُونَ ١٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International):
Rather, We dash the truth upon falsehood, and it destroys it, and thereupon it departs. And for you is destruction from that which you describe
Abdel Haleem:
No! We hurl the truth against falsehood, and truth obliterates it- see how falsehood vanishes away! Woe to you [people] for the way you describe God
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall:
Nay, but We hurl the true against the false, and it doth break its head and lo! it vanisheth. And yours will be woe for that which ye ascribe (unto Him)
