1 A Warning to Christians

ٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَنزَلَ عَلَىٰ عَبۡدِهِ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَلَمۡ یَجۡعَل لَّهُۥ عِوَجَاۜ ۝١

All the praises be to Allah Who has sent down to His servant (Muhammad) the book (the Qur’an) and has not placed therein any crookedness.

al-ḥamdu lillahi alladhī anzala ʿalā ʿabdihi l-kitāba walam yajʿal lahu ʿiwaj

قَیِّمࣰا لِّیُنذِرَ بَأۡسࣰا شَدِیدࣰا مِّن لَّدُنۡهُ وَیُبَشِّرَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ٱلَّذِینَ یَعۡمَلُونَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ أَنَّ لَهُمۡ أَجۡرًا حَسَنࣰا ۝٢

(He has made it) right to give warning (to the disbelievers) of a severe punishment from Him, and to give glad tidings to the believers who work righteous deeds so that they shall have a good reward (Paradise),

qayyiman liyundhira basan shadīdan min ladun'hu wayubashira l-mu'minīna alladhīna yaʿmalūna l-ṣāliḥāti anna lahum ajran ḥasana

مَّـٰكِثِینَ فِیهِ أَبَدࣰا ۝٣

(they shall) abide in it forever.

mākithīna fīhi abada

وَیُنذِرَ ٱلَّذِینَ قَالُوا۟ ٱتَّخَذَ ٱللَّهُ وَلَدࣰا ۝٤

Also to warn those who say: “Allah has begotten a son.”

wayundhira alladhīna qālū ittakhadha l-lahu walada

مَّا لَهُم بِهِۦ مِنۡ عِلۡمࣲ وَلَا لِءَابَاۤىِٕهِمۡۚ كَبُرَتۡ كَلِمَةࣰ تَخۡرُجُ مِنۡ أَفۡوَ ٰهِهِمۡۚ إِن یَقُولُونَ إِلَّا كَذِبࣰا ۝٥

They don’t have knowledge about it, nor did their forefathers. Mighty is the word that comes out of their mouths. They say nothing but a lie.

mā lahum bihi min ʿil'min walā liābāihim kaburat kalimatan takhruju min afwāhihim in yaqūlūna illā kadhiba

فَلَعَلَّكَ بَـٰخِعࣱ نَّفۡسَكَ عَلَىٰۤ ءَاثَـٰرِهِمۡ إِن لَّمۡ یُؤۡمِنُوا۟ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلۡحَدِیثِ أَسَفًا ۝٦

Perhaps, you would kill yourself (O Muhammad) in grief over their footsteps, because they don’t believe in this narration (the Qur’an).

falaʿallaka bākhiʿun nafsaka ʿalā āthārihim in lam yu'minū bihādhā l-ḥadīthi asafa

إِنَّا جَعَلۡنَا مَا عَلَى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ زِینَةࣰ لَّهَا لِنَبۡلُوَهُمۡ أَیُّهُمۡ أَحۡسَنُ عَمَلࣰا ۝٧

Surely! We have made the earth with all kinds of adornments in order that We may test them (mankind) and to see which of them are best in deeds.

innā jaʿalnā mā ʿalā l-arḍi zīnatan lahā linabluwahum ayyuhum aḥsanu ʿamala

وَإِنَّا لَجَـٰعِلُونَ مَا عَلَیۡهَا صَعِیدࣰا جُرُزًا ۝٨

And surely We shall reduce what is on it (the earth) to a bare dry soil.

wa-innā lajāʿilūna mā ʿalayhā ṣaʿīdan juruza

أَمۡ حَسِبۡتَ أَنَّ أَصۡحَـٰبَ ٱلۡكَهۡفِ وَٱلرَّقِیمِ كَانُوا۟ مِنۡ ءَایَـٰتِنَا عَجَبًا ۝٩

Do you think that the people of the cave and the inscription (news or name writing of the people of the cave) were a wonder among Our Signs?

am ḥasib'ta anna aṣḥāba l-kahfi wal-raqīmi kānū min āyātinā ʿajaba

إِذۡ أَوَى ٱلۡفِتۡیَةُ إِلَى ٱلۡكَهۡفِ فَقَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَاۤ ءَاتِنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ رَحۡمَةࣰ وَهَیِّئۡ لَنَا مِنۡ أَمۡرِنَا رَشَدࣰا ۝١٠

(Remember) when the young men fled (for refuge from their disbelieving folk) to the cave, they said: “Our Lord! Bestow on us Mercy from You and facilitate for us in our affair to the Right Way!”

idh awā l-fit'yatu ilā l-kahfi faqālū rabbanā ātinā min ladunka raḥmatan wahayyi lanā min amrinā rashada

فَضَرَبۡنَا عَلَىٰۤ ءَاذَانِهِمۡ فِی ٱلۡكَهۡفِ سِنِینَ عَدَدࣰا ۝١١

Therefore We covered on their ears (causing them into deep sleep) in the cave for a number of years,

faḍarabnā ʿalā ādhānihim fī l-kahfi sinīna ʿadada

ثُمَّ بَعَثۡنَـٰهُمۡ لِنَعۡلَمَ أَیُّ ٱلۡحِزۡبَیۡنِ أَحۡصَىٰ لِمَا لَبِثُوۤا۟ أَمَدࣰا ۝١٢

then We raised them up (from sleep) so that We might test which of the 2 parties (believers and disbelievers) was best at calculating the time period for which they had stayed.

thumma baʿathnāhum linaʿlama ayyu l-ḥiz'bayni aḥṣā limā labithū amada

2 Dwellers in the Cave

نَّحۡنُ نَقُصُّ عَلَیۡكَ نَبَأَهُم بِٱلۡحَقِّۚ إِنَّهُمۡ فِتۡیَةٌ ءَامَنُوا۟ بِرَبِّهِمۡ وَزِدۡنَـٰهُمۡ هُدࣰى ۝١٣

We narrate to you (O Muhammad) their story with truth. Surely they were young men who believed in their Lord and We increased them in guidance.

naḥnu naquṣṣu ʿalayka naba-ahum bil-ḥaqi innahum fit'yatun āmanū birabbihim wazid'nāhum huda

وَرَبَطۡنَا عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمۡ إِذۡ قَامُوا۟ فَقَالُوا۟ رَبُّنَا رَبُّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ لَن نَّدۡعُوَا۟ مِن دُونِهِۦۤ إِلَـٰهࣰاۖ لَّقَدۡ قُلۡنَاۤ إِذࣰا شَطَطًا ۝١٤

And We made their hearts firm and strong when they stood up and said: “Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, we shall never call upon any deity other than Him; for if we do, then we shall utter something improper (in disbelief).

warabaṭnā ʿalā qulūbihim idh qāmū faqālū rabbunā rabbu l-samāwāti wal-arḍi lan nadʿuwā min dūnihi ilāhan laqad qul'nā idhan shaṭaṭa

هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ قَوۡمُنَا ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مِن دُونِهِۦۤ ءَالِهَةࣰۖ لَّوۡلَا یَأۡتُونَ عَلَیۡهِم بِسُلۡطَـٰنِۭ بَیِّنࣲۖ فَمَنۡ أَظۡلَمُ مِمَّنِ ٱفۡتَرَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبࣰا ۝١٥

These are our people who have taken for deities other than Him (Allah). Why do they not bring for them a clear authority? And who does more wrong than the one who invents a lie against Allah?”

hāulāi qawmunā ittakhadhū min dūnihi ālihatan lawlā yatūna ʿalayhim bisul'ṭānin bayyinin faman aẓlamu mimmani if'tarā ʿalā l-lahi kadhiba

وَإِذِ ٱعۡتَزَلۡتُمُوهُمۡ وَمَا یَعۡبُدُونَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهَ فَأۡوُۥۤا۟ إِلَى ٱلۡكَهۡفِ یَنشُرۡ لَكُمۡ رَبُّكُم مِّن رَّحۡمَتِهِۦ وَیُهَیِّئۡ لَكُم مِّنۡ أَمۡرِكُم مِّرۡفَقࣰا ۝١٦

(They consulted with one another and said): “Now we have withdrawn from them and denounced those deities whom they worship except Allah, then seek refuge in the cave; our Lord will open a way for us from His Mercy and will make easy for us in our affair.”

wa-idhi iʿ'tazaltumūhum wamā yaʿbudūna illā l-laha fawū ilā l-kahfi yanshur lakum rabbukum min raḥmatihi wayuhayyi lakum min amrikum mir'faqa

۞ وَتَرَى ٱلشَّمۡسَ إِذَا طَلَعَت تَّزَ ٰوَرُ عَن كَهۡفِهِمۡ ذَاتَ ٱلۡیَمِینِ وَإِذَا غَرَبَت تَّقۡرِضُهُمۡ ذَاتَ ٱلشِّمَالِ وَهُمۡ فِی فَجۡوَةࣲ مِّنۡهُۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ مِنۡ ءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِۗ مَن یَهۡدِ ٱللَّهُ فَهُوَ ٱلۡمُهۡتَدِۖ وَمَن یُضۡلِلۡ فَلَن تَجِدَ لَهُۥ وَلِیࣰّا مُّرۡشِدࣰا ۝١٧

And you might have seen the sun when it rose, it declines to the right from their cave; and when it set, it turns away from them towards the left while they lay in the middle of the cave. That is one of the signs of Allah. Whoever He guides is rightly guided; but whoever He sends astray, you will never find guiding friend (to lead to the Right Way) for him.

watarā l-shamsa idhā ṭalaʿat tazāwaru ʿan kahfihim dhāta l-yamīni wa-idhā gharabat taqriḍuhum dhāta l-shimāli wahum fī fajwatin min'hu dhālika min āyāti l-lahi man yahdi l-lahu fahuwa l-muh'tadi waman yuḍ'lil falan tajida lahu waliyyan mur'shida

3 Dwellers in the Cave

وَتَحۡسَبُهُمۡ أَیۡقَاظࣰا وَهُمۡ رُقُودࣱۚ وَنُقَلِّبُهُمۡ ذَاتَ ٱلۡیَمِینِ وَذَاتَ ٱلشِّمَالِۖ وَكَلۡبُهُم بَـٰسِطࣱ ذِرَاعَیۡهِ بِٱلۡوَصِیدِۚ لَوِ ٱطَّلَعۡتَ عَلَیۡهِمۡ لَوَلَّیۡتَ مِنۡهُمۡ فِرَارࣰا وَلَمُلِئۡتَ مِنۡهُمۡ رُعۡبࣰا ۝١٨

And you would have thought them awake, though they were asleep. And We turned them to the right and to the left sides, while their dog stretched out its 2 forelegs at the entrance (of the cave). Had you looked at them, you would have certainly turned back from them in flight and (their sight) certainly would have filled with awe of them.

wataḥsabuhum ayqāẓan wahum ruqūdun wanuqallibuhum dhāta l-yamīni wadhāta l-shimāli wakalbuhum bāsiṭun dhirāʿayhi bil-waṣīdi lawi iṭṭalaʿta ʿalayhim lawallayta min'hum firāran walamuli'ta min'hum ruʿ'ba

وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ بَعَثۡنَـٰهُمۡ لِیَتَسَاۤءَلُوا۟ بَیۡنَهُمۡۚ قَالَ قَاۤىِٕلࣱ مِّنۡهُمۡ كَمۡ لَبِثۡتُمۡۖ قَالُوا۟ لَبِثۡنَا یَوۡمًا أَوۡ بَعۡضَ یَوۡمࣲۚ قَالُوا۟ رَبُّكُمۡ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا لَبِثۡتُمۡ فَٱبۡعَثُوۤا۟ أَحَدَكُم بِوَرِقِكُمۡ هَـٰذِهِۦۤ إِلَى ٱلۡمَدِینَةِ فَلۡیَنظُرۡ أَیُّهَاۤ أَزۡكَىٰ طَعَامࣰا فَلۡیَأۡتِكُم بِرِزۡقࣲ مِّنۡهُ وَلۡیَتَلَطَّفۡ وَلَا یُشۡعِرَنَّ بِكُمۡ أَحَدًا ۝١٩

Thus, We awakened them (from long deep sleep) so that they could question among them. A speaker from them said: “How long have you stayed here?” They said: “Perhaps we have stayed here for a day or part of a day.” They said: “Our Lord knows best how long we have stayed here. So send one of us with our silver coin to the city, and let him find out which is the purest food, and let him bring us some of it. Let him be careful and don’t let anyone know our whereabouts.

wakadhālika baʿathnāhum liyatasāalū baynahum qāla qāilun min'hum kam labith'tum qālū labith'nā yawman aw baʿḍa yawmin qālū rabbukum aʿlamu bimā labith'tum fa-ib'ʿathū aḥadakum biwariqikum hādhihi ilā l-madīnati falyanẓur ayyuhā azkā ṭaʿāman falyatikum biriz'qin min'hu walyatalaṭṭaf walā yush'ʿiranna bikum aḥada

إِنَّهُمۡ إِن یَظۡهَرُوا۟ عَلَیۡكُمۡ یَرۡجُمُوكُمۡ أَوۡ یُعِیدُوكُمۡ فِی مِلَّتِهِمۡ وَلَن تُفۡلِحُوۤا۟ إِذًا أَبَدࣰا ۝٢٠

Surely if they learn about you, they will stone you (to death), or turn you back into their religion, and in that case you will never ever be successful.”

innahum in yaẓharū ʿalaykum yarjumūkum aw yuʿīdūkum fī millatihim walan tuf'liḥū idhan abada

وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ أَعۡثَرۡنَا عَلَیۡهِمۡ لِیَعۡلَمُوۤا۟ أَنَّ وَعۡدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقࣱّ وَأَنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ لَا رَیۡبَ فِیهَاۤ إِذۡ یَتَنَـٰزَعُونَ بَیۡنَهُمۡ أَمۡرَهُمۡۖ فَقَالُوا۟ ٱبۡنُوا۟ عَلَیۡهِم بُنۡیَـٰنࣰاۖ رَّبُّهُمۡ أَعۡلَمُ بِهِمۡۚ قَالَ ٱلَّذِینَ غَلَبُوا۟ عَلَىٰۤ أَمۡرِهِمۡ لَنَتَّخِذَنَّ عَلَیۡهِم مَّسۡجِدࣰا ۝٢١

And thus We made their case known so that people might know that the Promise of Allah is true and that there is no doubt about the Hour (of Judgment). (Remember) when they (the people of the city) disputed among themselves about their case, they said: “Construct a building over them, their Lord knows best about them.” Those who won on their point said: “Surely we shall build a place of worship over them.”

wakadhālika aʿtharnā ʿalayhim liyaʿlamū anna waʿda l-lahi ḥaqqun wa-anna l-sāʿata lā rayba fīhā idh yatanāzaʿūna baynahum amrahum faqālū ib'nū ʿalayhim bun'yānan rabbuhum aʿlamu bihim qāla alladhīna ghalabū ʿalā amrihim lanattakhidhanna ʿalayhim masjida

سَیَقُولُونَ ثَلَـٰثَةࣱ رَّابِعُهُمۡ كَلۡبُهُمۡ وَیَقُولُونَ خَمۡسَةࣱ سَادِسُهُمۡ كَلۡبُهُمۡ رَجۡمَۢا بِٱلۡغَیۡبِۖ وَیَقُولُونَ سَبۡعَةࣱ وَثَامِنُهُمۡ كَلۡبُهُمۡۚ قُل رَّبِّیۤ أَعۡلَمُ بِعِدَّتِهِم مَّا یَعۡلَمُهُمۡ إِلَّا قَلِیلࣱۗ فَلَا تُمَارِ فِیهِمۡ إِلَّا مِرَاۤءࣰ ظَـٰهِرࣰا وَلَا تَسۡتَفۡتِ فِیهِم مِّنۡهُمۡ أَحَدࣰا ۝٢٢

Some say they were 3 and their dog was the 4th of them. Others say they were 5 and their dog was the 6th of them guessing at the unseen. Yet, others say they were 7 and their dog was the 8th of them. Say (O Muhammad): “My Lord knows best their number. None knows them but a few.” So don’t debate about them except with clear proof and don’t consult about them (people of Cave) with anyone.

sayaqūlūna thalāthatun rābiʿuhum kalbuhum wayaqūlūna khamsatun sādisuhum kalbuhum rajman bil-ghaybi wayaqūlūna sabʿatun wathāminuhum kalbuhum qul rabbī aʿlamu biʿiddatihim mā yaʿlamuhum illā qalīlun falā tumāri fīhim illā mirāan ẓāhiran walā tastafti fīhim min'hum aḥada

4 Qur'an as a guidance

وَلَا تَقُولَنَّ لِشَا۟یۡءٍ إِنِّی فَاعِلࣱ ذَ ٰلِكَ غَدًا ۝٢٣

And never say of anything: “Surely I shall do that tomorrow,”

walā taqūlanna lishāy'in innī fāʿilun dhālika ghada

إِلَّاۤ أَن یَشَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُۚ وَٱذۡكُر رَّبَّكَ إِذَا نَسِیتَ وَقُلۡ عَسَىٰۤ أَن یَهۡدِیَنِ رَبِّی لِأَقۡرَبَ مِنۡ هَـٰذَا رَشَدࣰا ۝٢٤

except that (say): “If Allah wills!” And remember your Lord when you forget and say: “I hope that my Lord will guide me to a closer way of guidance than this.”

illā an yashāa l-lahu wa-udh'kur rabbaka idhā nasīta waqul ʿasā an yahdiyani rabbī li-aqraba min hādhā rashada

وَلَبِثُوا۟ فِی كَهۡفِهِمۡ ثَلَـٰثَ مِا۟ئَةࣲ سِنِینَ وَٱزۡدَادُوا۟ تِسۡعࣰا ۝٢٥

And (some say) they stayed in their cave 300 years (solar) and add 9 (lunar years).

walabithū fī kahfihim thalātha mi-atin sinīna wa-iz'dādū tis'ʿa

قُلِ ٱللَّهُ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا لَبِثُوا۟ۖ لَهُۥ غَیۡبُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۖ أَبۡصِرۡ بِهِۦ وَأَسۡمِعۡۚ مَا لَهُم مِّن دُونِهِۦ مِن وَلِیࣲّ وَلَا یُشۡرِكُ فِی حُكۡمِهِۦۤ أَحَدࣰا ۝٢٦

(O Muhammad) say: “Allah knows best how long they stayed. With Him is (the knowledge of) the unseen of the heavens and the earth. How clearly He sees with it and how clearly He hears! They did not have any helper other than Him, and He does not share in His Decision and rule with anyone.”

quli l-lahu aʿlamu bimā labithū lahu ghaybu l-samāwāti wal-arḍi abṣir bihi wa-asmiʿ mā lahum min dūnihi min waliyyin walā yush'riku fī ḥuk'mihi aḥada

وَٱتۡلُ مَاۤ أُوحِیَ إِلَیۡكَ مِن كِتَابِ رَبِّكَۖ لَا مُبَدِّلَ لِكَلِمَـٰتِهِۦ وَلَن تَجِدَ مِن دُونِهِۦ مُلۡتَحَدࣰا ۝٢٧

And recite what has been revealed to you (O Muhammad) from the book (the Qur’an) of your Lord. None can change His Words and you will never find a refuge other than Him.

wa-ut'lu mā ūḥiya ilayka min kitābi rabbika lā mubaddila likalimātihi walan tajida min dūnihi mul'taḥada

وَٱصۡبِرۡ نَفۡسَكَ مَعَ ٱلَّذِینَ یَدۡعُونَ رَبَّهُم بِٱلۡغَدَوٰةِ وَٱلۡعَشِیِّ یُرِیدُونَ وَجۡهَهُۥۖ وَلَا تَعۡدُ عَیۡنَاكَ عَنۡهُمۡ تُرِیدُ زِینَةَ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۖ وَلَا تُطِعۡ مَنۡ أَغۡفَلۡنَا قَلۡبَهُۥ عَن ذِكۡرِنَا وَٱتَّبَعَ هَوَىٰهُ وَكَانَ أَمۡرُهُۥ فُرُطࣰا ۝٢٨

Keep yourself (O Muhammad) patiently with those who call their Lord in the morning and the evening seeking His pleasure, and don’t let your eyes overlook them desiring the beauty of the life of the world; don’t obey the one whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance, who follows own lusts and whose affair has been lost.

wa-iṣ'bir nafsaka maʿa alladhīna yadʿūna rabbahum bil-ghadati wal-ʿashiyi yurīdūna wajhahu walā taʿdu ʿaynāka ʿanhum turīdu zīnata l-ḥayati l-dun'yā walā tuṭiʿ man aghfalnā qalbahu ʿan dhik'rinā wa-ittabaʿa hawāhu wakāna amruhu furuṭa

وَقُلِ ٱلۡحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّكُمۡۖ فَمَن شَاۤءَ فَلۡیُؤۡمِن وَمَن شَاۤءَ فَلۡیَكۡفُرۡۚ إِنَّاۤ أَعۡتَدۡنَا لِلظَّـٰلِمِینَ نَارًا أَحَاطَ بِهِمۡ سُرَادِقُهَاۚ وَإِن یَسۡتَغِیثُوا۟ یُغَاثُوا۟ بِمَاۤءࣲ كَٱلۡمُهۡلِ یَشۡوِی ٱلۡوُجُوهَۚ بِئۡسَ ٱلشَّرَابُ وَسَاۤءَتۡ مُرۡتَفَقًا ۝٢٩

(O Muhammad) say: “The truth is from your Lord. Whoever wills let him believe, and whoever wills, let him disbelieve.” Surely, We have prepared a fire for the wrongdoers; its walls will surround them (disbelievers). If they ask for help, they will be granted water like boiling oil that will burn faces. Terrible is the drink and evil is the resting place!

waquli l-ḥaqu min rabbikum faman shāa falyu'min waman shāa falyakfur innā aʿtadnā lilẓẓālimīna nāran aḥāṭa bihim surādiquhā wa-in yastaghīthū yughāthū bimāin kal-muh'li yashwī l-wujūha bi'sa l-sharābu wasāat mur'tafaqa

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ إِنَّا لَا نُضِیعُ أَجۡرَ مَنۡ أَحۡسَنَ عَمَلًا ۝٣٠

Surely! Those who believe and do righteous deeds, We shall not lose the reward of him who does good deeds.

inna alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti innā lā nuḍīʿu ajra man aḥsana ʿamala

أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ لَهُمۡ جَنَّـٰتُ عَدۡنࣲ تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهِمُ ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ یُحَلَّوۡنَ فِیهَا مِنۡ أَسَاوِرَ مِن ذَهَبࣲ وَیَلۡبَسُونَ ثِیَابًا خُضۡرࣰا مِّن سُندُسࣲ وَإِسۡتَبۡرَقࣲ مُّتَّكِءِینَ فِیهَا عَلَى ٱلۡأَرَاۤىِٕكِۚ نِعۡمَ ٱلثَّوَابُ وَحَسُنَتۡ مُرۡتَفَقࣰا ۝٣١

Those are the ones for them there will be gardens of Eden; rivers flow beneath them; they will be decorated therein with bracelets of gold, and they will wear green garments of fine and thick silk. They will recline therein on raised thrones. How good is the reward, and how excellent is the resting place!

ulāika lahum jannātu ʿadnin tajrī min taḥtihimu l-anhāru yuḥallawna fīhā min asāwira min dhahabin wayalbasūna thiyāban khuḍ'ran min sundusin wa-is'tabraqin muttakiīna fīhā ʿalā l-arāiki niʿ'ma l-thawābu waḥasunat mur'tafaqa

5 A Parable

۞ وَٱضۡرِبۡ لَهُم مَّثَلࣰا رَّجُلَیۡنِ جَعَلۡنَا لِأَحَدِهِمَا جَنَّتَیۡنِ مِنۡ أَعۡنَـٰبࣲ وَحَفَفۡنَـٰهُمَا بِنَخۡلࣲ وَجَعَلۡنَا بَیۡنَهُمَا زَرۡعࣰا ۝٣٢

And (O Muhammad) put forward to them the example of 2 men: We had given 2 gardens of grapes to one of them, We had surrounded them with date-palms, and had made cultivated fields between them.

wa-iḍ'rib lahum mathalan rajulayni jaʿalnā li-aḥadihimā jannatayni min aʿnābin waḥafafnāhumā binakhlin wajaʿalnā baynahumā zarʿa

كِلۡتَا ٱلۡجَنَّتَیۡنِ ءَاتَتۡ أُكُلَهَا وَلَمۡ تَظۡلِم مِّنۡهُ شَیۡءࣰاۚ وَفَجَّرۡنَا خِلَـٰلَهُمَا نَهَرࣰا ۝٣٣

Both the gardens brought forth their produce and did not fail in the least. We (even) caused a river to gush forth in the middle of them.

kil'tā l-janatayni ātat ukulahā walam taẓlim min'hu shayan wafajjarnā khilālahumā nahara

وَكَانَ لَهُۥ ثَمَرࣱ فَقَالَ لِصَـٰحِبِهِۦ وَهُوَ یُحَاوِرُهُۥۤ أَنَا۠ أَكۡثَرُ مِنكَ مَالࣰا وَأَعَزُّ نَفَرࣰا ۝٣٤

And there was abundant produce for him and he said to his companion while he was talking to him: “I have more wealth than you and stronger (in respect of) men.”

wakāna lahu thamarun faqāla liṣāḥibihi wahuwa yuḥāwiruhu anā aktharu minka mālan wa-aʿazzu nafara

وَدَخَلَ جَنَّتَهُۥ وَهُوَ ظَالِمࣱ لِّنَفۡسِهِۦ قَالَ مَاۤ أَظُنُّ أَن تَبِیدَ هَـٰذِهِۦۤ أَبَدࣰا ۝٣٥

And he entered his garden while he was unjust to himself. He said: “I don’t think that this garden will ever perish!

wadakhala jannatahu wahuwa ẓālimun linafsihi qāla mā aẓunnu an tabīda hādhihi abada

وَمَاۤ أَظُنُّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ قَاۤىِٕمَةࣰ وَلَىِٕن رُّدِدتُّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّی لَأَجِدَنَّ خَیۡرࣰا مِّنۡهَا مُنقَلَبࣰا ۝٣٦

And I don’t think the Hour will ever come. Even if I am brought back to my Lord, surely I shall find better than this at the end.”

wamā aẓunnu l-sāʿata qāimatan wala-in rudidttu ilā rabbī la-ajidanna khayran min'hā munqalaba

قَالَ لَهُۥ صَاحِبُهُۥ وَهُوَ یُحَاوِرُهُۥۤ أَكَفَرۡتَ بِٱلَّذِی خَلَقَكَ مِن تُرَابࣲ ثُمَّ مِن نُّطۡفَةࣲ ثُمَّ سَوَّىٰكَ رَجُلࣰا ۝٣٧

His companion said to him while he was talking to him: “Do you disbelieve in Him Who created you out of dust, then out of semen, then fashioned you into a man?

qāla lahu ṣāḥibuhu wahuwa yuḥāwiruhu akafarta bi-alladhī khalaqaka min turābin thumma min nuṭ'fatin thumma sawwāka rajula

لَّـٰكِنَّا۠ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ رَبِّی وَلَاۤ أُشۡرِكُ بِرَبِّیۤ أَحَدࣰا ۝٣٨

He is my Lord and I shall not associate anyone with my Lord.

lākinnā huwa l-lahu rabbī walā ush'riku birabbī aḥada

وَلَوۡلَاۤ إِذۡ دَخَلۡتَ جَنَّتَكَ قُلۡتَ مَا شَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُ لَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِٱللَّهِۚ إِن تَرَنِ أَنَا۠ أَقَلَّ مِنكَ مَالࣰا وَوَلَدࣰا ۝٣٩

When you entered your garden, why did you not say: ‘It is as Allah wills! There is no power but with Allah!’ If you see me, I have less wealth than you and children,

walawlā idh dakhalta jannataka qul'ta mā shāa l-lahu lā quwwata illā bil-lahi in tarani anā aqalla minka mālan wawalada

فَعَسَىٰ رَبِّیۤ أَن یُؤۡتِیَنِ خَیۡرࣰا مِّن جَنَّتِكَ وَیُرۡسِلَ عَلَیۡهَا حُسۡبَانࣰا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ فَتُصۡبِحَ صَعِیدࣰا زَلَقًا ۝٤٠

it may be that my Lord will give me something better than your garden, and may send a punishment from the sky on it, then turn it into a slippery earth.

faʿasā rabbī an yu'tiyani khayran min jannatika wayur'sila ʿalayhā ḥus'bānan mina l-samāi fatuṣ'biḥa ṣaʿīdan zalaqa

أَوۡ یُصۡبِحَ مَاۤؤُهَا غَوۡرࣰا فَلَن تَسۡتَطِیعَ لَهُۥ طَلَبࣰا ۝٤١

Or its water will become deep-sunken (dry underground) so that you will never be able to find it.”

aw yuṣ'biḥa māuhā ghawran falan tastaṭīʿa lahu ṭalaba

وَأُحِیطَ بِثَمَرِهِۦ فَأَصۡبَحَ یُقَلِّبُ كَفَّیۡهِ عَلَىٰ مَاۤ أَنفَقَ فِیهَا وَهِیَ خَاوِیَةٌ عَلَىٰ عُرُوشِهَا وَیَقُولُ یَـٰلَیۡتَنِی لَمۡ أُشۡرِكۡ بِرَبِّیۤ أَحَدࣰا ۝٤٢

(It so happened that) his fruits were surrounded (with ruin). He began twisting his hands (with sorrow) over what he had spent on it while all (fruits) were destroyed on their nets, and he said: “I wish I had not associated anyone with my Lord!”

wa-uḥīṭa bithamarihi fa-aṣbaḥa yuqallibu kaffayhi ʿalā mā anfaqa fīhā wahiya khāwiyatun ʿalā ʿurūshihā wayaqūlu yālaytanī lam ush'rik birabbī aḥada

وَلَمۡ تَكُن لَّهُۥ فِئَةࣱ یَنصُرُونَهُۥ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَمَا كَانَ مُنتَصِرًا ۝٤٣

And he could neither find anyone to help him other than Allah, nor could he defend himself.

walam takun lahu fi-atun yanṣurūnahu min dūni l-lahi wamā kāna muntaṣira

هُنَالِكَ ٱلۡوَلَـٰیَةُ لِلَّهِ ٱلۡحَقِّۚ هُوَ خَیۡرࣱ ثَوَابࣰا وَخَیۡرٌ عُقۡبࣰا ۝٤٤

The real power (protection) comes from Allah, the true one worthy of worship. He (Allah) is the best for reward and the best for the final end

hunālika l-walāyatu lillahi l-ḥaqi huwa khayrun thawāban wakhayrun ʿuq'ba

6 Guilty are judged

وَٱضۡرِبۡ لَهُم مَّثَلَ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا كَمَاۤءٍ أَنزَلۡنَـٰهُ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ فَٱخۡتَلَطَ بِهِۦ نَبَاتُ ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَأَصۡبَحَ هَشِیمࣰا تَذۡرُوهُ ٱلرِّیَـٰحُۗ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ مُّقۡتَدِرًا ۝٤٥

And (O Muhammad) put forward for them the example of the worldly life. It is like water (rain) which We send down from the sky and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it. (But later it) becomes dry stalks which the winds scatter. And Allah has power over everything.

wa-iḍ'rib lahum mathala l-ḥayati l-dun'yā kamāin anzalnāhu mina l-samāi fa-ikh'talaṭa bihi nabātu l-arḍi fa-aṣbaḥa hashīman tadhrūhu l-riyāḥu wakāna l-lahu ʿalā kulli shayin muq'tadira

ٱلۡمَالُ وَٱلۡبَنُونَ زِینَةُ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۖ وَٱلۡبَـٰقِیَـٰتُ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتُ خَیۡرٌ عِندَ رَبِّكَ ثَوَابࣰا وَخَیۡرٌ أَمَلࣰا ۝٤٦

Wealth and children are the adornment of the worldly life. But the lasting righteous deeds are better with your Lord for rewards and better hope.

al-mālu wal-banūna zīnatu l-ḥayati l-dun'yā wal-bāqiyātu l-ṣāliḥātu khayrun ʿinda rabbika thawāban wakhayrun amala

وَیَوۡمَ نُسَیِّرُ ٱلۡجِبَالَ وَتَرَى ٱلۡأَرۡضَ بَارِزَةࣰ وَحَشَرۡنَـٰهُمۡ فَلَمۡ نُغَادِرۡ مِنۡهُمۡ أَحَدࣰا ۝٤٧

And (remember) the Day when We shall cause the mountains to move, you will see the earth as a leveled plain (of waste), We shall gather them, and will not leave anyone of them behind.

wayawma nusayyiru l-jibāla watarā l-arḍa bārizatan waḥasharnāhum falam nughādir min'hum aḥada

وَعُرِضُوا۟ عَلَىٰ رَبِّكَ صَفࣰّا لَّقَدۡ جِئۡتُمُونَا كَمَا خَلَقۡنَـٰكُمۡ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةِۭۚ بَلۡ زَعَمۡتُمۡ أَلَّن نَّجۡعَلَ لَكُم مَّوۡعِدࣰا ۝٤٨

And they will be set before your Lord in rows (and Allah will say): “Now indeed you have come to Us as We created you the first time. Nay, but you thought that We had never appointed a meeting for you.”

waʿuriḍū ʿalā rabbika ṣaffan laqad ji'tumūnā kamā khalaqnākum awwala marratin bal zaʿamtum allan najʿala lakum mawʿida

وَوُضِعَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبُ فَتَرَى ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ مُشۡفِقِینَ مِمَّا فِیهِ وَیَقُولُونَ یَـٰوَیۡلَتَنَا مَالِ هَـٰذَا ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ لَا یُغَادِرُ صَغِیرَةࣰ وَلَا كَبِیرَةً إِلَّاۤ أَحۡصَىٰهَاۚ وَوَجَدُوا۟ مَا عَمِلُوا۟ حَاضِرࣰاۗ وَلَا یَظۡلِمُ رَبُّكَ أَحَدࣰا ۝٤٩

And the book (one’s record) will be placed (before them), and you will see the sinners fearful of what is (recorded) in it. They will say: “Woe to us! What is the matter with this book? Neither it leaves out a small thing nor a big thing but has recorded it with numbers!” They will find all that they did and placed before them. Your Lord will not treat anyone with injustice.

wawuḍiʿa l-kitābu fatarā l-muj'rimīna mush'fiqīna mimmā fīhi wayaqūlūna yāwaylatanā māli hādhā l-kitābi lā yughādiru ṣaghīratan walā kabīratan illā aḥṣāhā wawajadū mā ʿamilū ḥāḍiran walā yaẓlimu rabbuka aḥada

7 Their Helplessness

وَإِذۡ قُلۡنَا لِلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةِ ٱسۡجُدُوا۟ لِءَادَمَ فَسَجَدُوۤا۟ إِلَّاۤ إِبۡلِیسَ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡجِنِّ فَفَسَقَ عَنۡ أَمۡرِ رَبِّهِۦۤۗ أَفَتَتَّخِذُونَهُۥ وَذُرِّیَّتَهُۥۤ أَوۡلِیَاۤءَ مِن دُونِی وَهُمۡ لَكُمۡ عَدُوُّۢۚ بِئۡسَ لِلظَّـٰلِمِینَ بَدَلࣰا ۝٥٠

And (remember) when We said to the angels: “Prostrate to Adam,” all prostrated except Satan. He was one of the jinns; he disobeyed the command of its Lord. Will you then take him (Satan) and its progeny as your protectors rather than Me while they are enemies to you? What an evil is the exchange for the wrongdoers!

wa-idh qul'nā lil'malāikati us'judū liādama fasajadū illā ib'līsa kāna mina l-jini fafasaqa ʿan amri rabbihi afatattakhidhūnahu wadhurriyyatahu awliyāa min dūnī wahum lakum ʿaduwwun bi'sa lilẓẓālimīna badala

۞ مَّاۤ أَشۡهَدتُّهُمۡ خَلۡقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَا خَلۡقَ أَنفُسِهِمۡ وَمَا كُنتُ مُتَّخِذَ ٱلۡمُضِلِّینَ عَضُدࣰا ۝٥١

(Allah) did not make them (Satan and its offspring) to witness the creation of the heavens and the earth, nor their own creation, nor I (Allah) took the misleaders (of mankind) as helpers.

mā ashhadttuhum khalqa l-samāwāti wal-arḍi walā khalqa anfusihim wamā kuntu muttakhidha l-muḍilīna ʿaḍuda

وَیَوۡمَ یَقُولُ نَادُوا۟ شُرَكَاۤءِیَ ٱلَّذِینَ زَعَمۡتُمۡ فَدَعَوۡهُمۡ فَلَمۡ یَسۡتَجِیبُوا۟ لَهُمۡ وَجَعَلۡنَا بَیۡنَهُم مَّوۡبِقࣰا ۝٥٢

And (remember) the Day when He will say: “Call those partners of Mine whom you claimed.” They will cry to them but they will not answer them and We shall put a barrier between them.

wayawma yaqūlu nādū shurakāiya alladhīna zaʿamtum fadaʿawhum falam yastajībū lahum wajaʿalnā baynahum mawbiqa

وَرَءَا ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ ٱلنَّارَ فَظَنُّوۤا۟ أَنَّهُم مُّوَاقِعُوهَا وَلَمۡ یَجِدُوا۟ عَنۡهَا مَصۡرِفࣰا ۝٥٣

And the sinners will see the fire and realize that they have to fall therein. And they will not find a way of escape from it.

waraā l-muj'rimūna l-nāra faẓannū annahum muwāqiʿūhā walam yajidū ʿanhā maṣrifa

8 Warning is disregarded

وَلَقَدۡ صَرَّفۡنَا فِی هَـٰذَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانِ لِلنَّاسِ مِن كُلِّ مَثَلࣲۚ وَكَانَ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنُ أَكۡثَرَ شَیۡءࣲ جَدَلࣰا ۝٥٤

And indeed We explained every example in this Qur’an for mankind (to understand). But human is quarrelsome of most things.

walaqad ṣarrafnā fī hādhā l-qur'āni lilnnāsi min kulli mathalin wakāna l-insānu akthara shayin jadala

وَمَا مَنَعَ ٱلنَّاسَ أَن یُؤۡمِنُوۤا۟ إِذۡ جَاۤءَهُمُ ٱلۡهُدَىٰ وَیَسۡتَغۡفِرُوا۟ رَبَّهُمۡ إِلَّاۤ أَن تَأۡتِیَهُمۡ سُنَّةُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ أَوۡ یَأۡتِیَهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُ قُبُلࣰا ۝٥٥

And nothing prevents mankind from believing and asking forgiveness of their Lord when the guidance (the Qur’an) has come to them, except that the way of the ancients come upon them or the punishment come upon them face to face.

wamā manaʿa l-nāsa an yu'minū idh jāahumu l-hudā wayastaghfirū rabbahum illā an tatiyahum sunnatu l-awalīna aw yatiyahumu l-ʿadhābu qubula

وَمَا نُرۡسِلُ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ إِلَّا مُبَشِّرِینَ وَمُنذِرِینَۚ وَیُجَـٰدِلُ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِٱلۡبَـٰطِلِ لِیُدۡحِضُوا۟ بِهِ ٱلۡحَقَّۖ وَٱتَّخَذُوۤا۟ ءَایَـٰتِی وَمَاۤ أُنذِرُوا۟ هُزُوࣰا ۝٥٦

We sent the Messengers except as bearers of glad tidings and warners. But the disbelievers disputed with false argument in order to refute the truth. They took My Verses with which they were warned, as a joke!

wamā nur'silu l-mur'salīna illā mubashirīna wamundhirīna wayujādilu alladhīna kafarū bil-bāṭili liyud'ḥiḍū bihi l-ḥaqa wa-ittakhadhū āyātī wamā undhirū huzuwa

وَمَنۡ أَظۡلَمُ مِمَّن ذُكِّرَ بِءَایَـٰتِ رَبِّهِۦ فَأَعۡرَضَ عَنۡهَا وَنَسِیَ مَا قَدَّمَتۡ یَدَاهُۚ إِنَّا جَعَلۡنَا عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمۡ أَكِنَّةً أَن یَفۡقَهُوهُ وَفِیۤ ءَاذَانِهِمۡ وَقۡرࣰاۖ وَإِن تَدۡعُهُمۡ إِلَى ٱلۡهُدَىٰ فَلَن یَهۡتَدُوۤا۟ إِذًا أَبَدࣰا ۝٥٧

And who is more unjust than the one who, when reminded of the Verses of the Lord, turns away from them and forgets what deeds its own hands have done? (For these people) surely, We have set veils over their hearts so they don’t understand it (the Qur’an), and their ears are (covered) with deafness. If you (O Muhammad) call them to the guidance, even then they will never be guided.

waman aẓlamu mimman dhukkira biāyāti rabbihi fa-aʿraḍa ʿanhā wanasiya mā qaddamat yadāhu innā jaʿalnā ʿalā qulūbihim akinnatan an yafqahūhu wafī ādhānihim waqran wa-in tadʿuhum ilā l-hudā falan yahtadū idhan abada

وَرَبُّكَ ٱلۡغَفُورُ ذُو ٱلرَّحۡمَةِۖ لَوۡ یُؤَاخِذُهُم بِمَا كَسَبُوا۟ لَعَجَّلَ لَهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابَۚ بَل لَّهُم مَّوۡعِدࣱ لَّن یَجِدُوا۟ مِن دُونِهِۦ مَوۡىِٕلࣰا ۝٥٨

And your Lord is Forgiving, the Owner of Mercy. If He calls them to account for what they have earned, He would have hastened the punishment for them. But they have their appointed time, beyond which they will never find an escape.

warabbuka l-ghafūru dhū l-raḥmati law yuākhidhuhum bimā kasabū laʿajjala lahumu l-ʿadhāba bal lahum mawʿidun lan yajidū min dūnihi mawila

وَتِلۡكَ ٱلۡقُرَىٰۤ أَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهُمۡ لَمَّا ظَلَمُوا۟ وَجَعَلۡنَا لِمَهۡلِكِهِم مَّوۡعِدࣰا ۝٥٩

And We destroyed these towns with them (Ad, Thamud inhabitants) when they did wrong. We appointed a fixed time for their destruction.

watil'ka l-qurā ahlaknāhum lammā ẓalamū wajaʿalnā limahlikihim mawʿida

9 Moses' search of Knowledge

وَإِذۡ قَالَ مُوسَىٰ لِفَتَىٰهُ لَاۤ أَبۡرَحُ حَتَّىٰۤ أَبۡلُغَ مَجۡمَعَ ٱلۡبَحۡرَیۡنِ أَوۡ أَمۡضِیَ حُقُبࣰا ۝٦٠

And (remember) when Moses said to his young servant: “I will not give up (traveling) until I reach the junction of the 2 seas or (until) I spend years (in traveling).”

wa-idh qāla mūsā lifatāhu lā abraḥu ḥattā ablugha majmaʿa l-baḥrayni aw amḍiya ḥuquba

فَلَمَّا بَلَغَا مَجۡمَعَ بَیۡنِهِمَا نَسِیَا حُوتَهُمَا فَٱتَّخَذَ سَبِیلَهُۥ فِی ٱلۡبَحۡرِ سَرَبࣰا ۝٦١

But when they reached the junction between them, they forgot (about) their fish (they were carrying), which made its way through the sea as in a tunnel.

falammā balaghā majmaʿa baynihimā nasiyā ḥūtahumā fa-ittakhadha sabīlahu fī l-baḥri saraba

فَلَمَّا جَاوَزَا قَالَ لِفَتَىٰهُ ءَاتِنَا غَدَاۤءَنَا لَقَدۡ لَقِینَا مِن سَفَرِنَا هَـٰذَا نَصَبࣰا ۝٦٢

So when they had passed further on, he (Moses) said to his young servant: “Bring us our breakfast; truly we have suffered this fatigue in our journey.”

falammā jāwazā qāla lifatāhu ātinā ghadāanā laqad laqīnā min safarinā hādhā naṣaba

قَالَ أَرَءَیۡتَ إِذۡ أَوَیۡنَاۤ إِلَى ٱلصَّخۡرَةِ فَإِنِّی نَسِیتُ ٱلۡحُوتَ وَمَاۤ أَنسَىٰنِیهُ إِلَّا ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُ أَنۡ أَذۡكُرَهُۥۚ وَٱتَّخَذَ سَبِیلَهُۥ فِی ٱلۡبَحۡرِ عَجَبࣰا ۝٦٣

He replied: “Do you remember when we were resting ourselves beside the rock? Indeed I forgot the fish, none but Satan made me forget to remember it. It took its way into the sea in a strange way!”

qāla ara-ayta idh awaynā ilā l-ṣakhrati fa-innī nasītu l-ḥūta wamā ansānīhu illā l-shayṭānu an adhkurahu wa-ittakhadha sabīlahu fī l-baḥri ʿajaba

قَالَ ذَ ٰلِكَ مَا كُنَّا نَبۡغِۚ فَٱرۡتَدَّا عَلَىٰۤ ءَاثَارِهِمَا قَصَصࣰا ۝٦٤

(Moses) said: “That is what we have been seeking.” So they went back retracing their footsteps.

qāla dhālika mā kunnā nabghi fa-ir'taddā ʿalā āthārihimā qaṣaṣa

فَوَجَدَا عَبۡدࣰا مِّنۡ عِبَادِنَاۤ ءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُ رَحۡمَةࣰ مِّنۡ عِندِنَا وَعَلَّمۡنَـٰهُ مِن لَّدُنَّا عِلۡمࣰا ۝٦٥

Then they found one of Our servant (Khidr) whom We had bestowed Mercy from Us, and We had taught him knowledge from Us.

fawajadā ʿabdan min ʿibādinā ātaynāhu raḥmatan min ʿindinā waʿallamnāhu min ladunnā ʿil'ma

قَالَ لَهُۥ مُوسَىٰ هَلۡ أَتَّبِعُكَ عَلَىٰۤ أَن تُعَلِّمَنِ مِمَّا عُلِّمۡتَ رُشۡدࣰا ۝٦٦

Moses requested him: “May I follow you so that you may teach me something of that knowledge which you have been taught (by Allah)?

qāla lahu mūsā hal attabiʿuka ʿalā an tuʿallimani mimmā ʿullim'ta rush'da

قَالَ إِنَّكَ لَن تَسۡتَطِیعَ مَعِیَ صَبۡرࣰا ۝٦٧

He (Khidr) said: “Surely! You will never be able to have patience with me,

qāla innaka lan tastaṭīʿa maʿiya ṣabra

وَكَیۡفَ تَصۡبِرُ عَلَىٰ مَا لَمۡ تُحِطۡ بِهِۦ خُبۡرࣰا ۝٦٨

how can you have patience about that which is beyond your knowledge?”

wakayfa taṣbiru ʿalā mā lam tuḥiṭ bihi khub'ra

قَالَ سَتَجِدُنِیۤ إِن شَاۤءَ ٱللَّهُ صَابِرࣰا وَلَاۤ أَعۡصِی لَكَ أَمۡرࣰا ۝٦٩

(Moses) said: “You will find me patient if Allah wills, and I will not disobey your command.”

qāla satajidunī in shāa l-lahu ṣābiran walā aʿṣī laka amra

قَالَ فَإِنِ ٱتَّبَعۡتَنِی فَلَا تَسۡءَلۡنِی عَن شَیۡءٍ حَتَّىٰۤ أُحۡدِثَ لَكَ مِنۡهُ ذِكۡرࣰا ۝٧٠

He (Khidr) said: “Then, if you follow me, don’t ask me about anything until I myself mention it to you.”

qāla fa-ini ittabaʿtanī falā tasalnī ʿan shayin ḥattā uḥ'ditha laka min'hu dhik'ra

10 Moses' search of Knowledge

فَٱنطَلَقَا حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا رَكِبَا فِی ٱلسَّفِینَةِ خَرَقَهَاۖ قَالَ أَخَرَقۡتَهَا لِتُغۡرِقَ أَهۡلَهَا لَقَدۡ جِئۡتَ شَیۡءًا إِمۡرࣰا ۝٧١

So they both proceeded, till when they embarked in a ship, Khidr made a hole in it. Moses said: “Have you made a hole in it to drown its people? Surely, you have done a bad thing.”

fa-inṭalaqā ḥattā idhā rakibā fī l-safīnati kharaqahā qāla akharaqtahā litugh'riqa ahlahā laqad ji'ta shayan im'ra

قَالَ أَلَمۡ أَقُلۡ إِنَّكَ لَن تَسۡتَطِیعَ مَعِیَ صَبۡرࣰا ۝٧٢

He (Khidr) said: “Did I not tell you that you would never be able to have patience with me?”

qāla alam aqul innaka lan tastaṭīʿa maʿiya ṣabra

قَالَ لَا تُؤَاخِذۡنِی بِمَا نَسِیتُ وَلَا تُرۡهِقۡنِی مِنۡ أَمۡرِی عُسۡرࣰا ۝٧٣

(Moses) said: “Don’t call me to account for what I forgot, and don’t be hard on me for my affair (with you).”

qāla lā tuākhidh'nī bimā nasītu walā tur'hiq'nī min amrī ʿus'ra

فَٱنطَلَقَا حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا لَقِیَا غُلَـٰمࣰا فَقَتَلَهُۥ قَالَ أَقَتَلۡتَ نَفۡسࣰا زَكِیَّةَۢ بِغَیۡرِ نَفۡسࣲ لَّقَدۡ جِئۡتَ شَیۡءࣰا نُّكۡرࣰا ۝٧٤

Then they both proceeded till they met a boy, then Khidr killed him. Moses said: “Have you killed an innocent person who killed none? Surely, you have committed an evil thing!”

fa-inṭalaqā ḥattā idhā laqiyā ghulāman faqatalahu qāla aqatalta nafsan zakiyyatan bighayri nafsin laqad ji'ta shayan nuk'ra

۞ قَالَ أَلَمۡ أَقُل لَّكَ إِنَّكَ لَن تَسۡتَطِیعَ مَعِیَ صَبۡرࣰا ۝٧٥

(Khidr) said: “Did I not tell you that you would never be able to have patience with me?”

qāla alam aqul laka innaka lan tastaṭīʿa maʿiya ṣabra

قَالَ إِن سَأَلۡتُكَ عَن شَیۡءِۭ بَعۡدَهَا فَلَا تُصَـٰحِبۡنِیۖ قَدۡ بَلَغۡتَ مِن لَّدُنِّی عُذۡرࣰا ۝٧٦

(Moses) said: “If I ever ask you about anything after this, don’t keep me in your company, (If I ask again then) surely you will have an excuse in my case.”

qāla in sa-altuka ʿan shayin baʿdahā falā tuṣāḥib'nī qad balaghta min ladunnī ʿudh'ra

فَٱنطَلَقَا حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَاۤ أَتَیَاۤ أَهۡلَ قَرۡیَةٍ ٱسۡتَطۡعَمَاۤ أَهۡلَهَا فَأَبَوۡا۟ أَن یُضَیِّفُوهُمَا فَوَجَدَا فِیهَا جِدَارࣰا یُرِیدُ أَن یَنقَضَّ فَأَقَامَهُۥۖ قَالَ لَوۡ شِئۡتَ لَتَّخَذۡتَ عَلَیۡهِ أَجۡرࣰا ۝٧٧

Then they both proceeded, till they came to the people of a town. They asked its people for food, but they refused to entertain them. Then they found in it a wall that was about to collapse, so Khidr set it up straight. Moses said: “If you had wished, surely you could have taken some wages for it!”

fa-inṭalaqā ḥattā idhā atayā ahla qaryatin is'taṭʿamā ahlahā fa-abaw an yuḍayyifūhumā fawajadā fīhā jidāran yurīdu an yanqaḍḍa fa-aqāmahu qāla law shi'ta lattakhadhta ʿalayhi ajra

قَالَ هَـٰذَا فِرَاقُ بَیۡنِی وَبَیۡنِكَۚ سَأُنَبِّئُكَ بِتَأۡوِیلِ مَا لَمۡ تَسۡتَطِع عَّلَیۡهِ صَبۡرًا ۝٧٨

(Khidr) said: “This is the parting (time) between me and you. (First) I will tell you the interpretation of those (acts) over which you could not have patience.

qāla hādhā firāqu baynī wabaynika sa-unabbi-uka bitawīli mā lam tastaṭiʿ ʿalayhi ṣabra

أَمَّا ٱلسَّفِینَةُ فَكَانَتۡ لِمَسَـٰكِینَ یَعۡمَلُونَ فِی ٱلۡبَحۡرِ فَأَرَدتُّ أَنۡ أَعِیبَهَا وَكَانَ وَرَاۤءَهُم مَّلِكࣱ یَأۡخُذُ كُلَّ سَفِینَةٍ غَصۡبࣰا ۝٧٩

As for the ship, it belonged to poor people working in the sea. I intended to damage it as there was a king after them who was seizing every ship by force.

ammā l-safīnatu fakānat limasākīna yaʿmalūna fī l-baḥri fa-aradttu an aʿībahā wakāna warāahum malikun yakhudhu kulla safīnatin ghaṣba

وَأَمَّا ٱلۡغُلَـٰمُ فَكَانَ أَبَوَاهُ مُؤۡمِنَیۡنِ فَخَشِینَاۤ أَن یُرۡهِقَهُمَا طُغۡیَـٰنࣰا وَكُفۡرࣰا ۝٨٠

As for the boy, his parents were believers, and we feared lest he would oppress them by rebellion and disbelief.

wa-ammā l-ghulāmu fakāna abawāhu mu'minayni fakhashīnā an yur'hiqahumā ṭugh'yānan wakuf'ra

فَأَرَدۡنَاۤ أَن یُبۡدِلَهُمَا رَبُّهُمَا خَیۡرࣰا مِّنۡهُ زَكَوٰةࣰ وَأَقۡرَبَ رُحۡمࣰا ۝٨١

So we intended that their Lord should exchange for them one (son) better than him in righteousness and near to mercy.

fa-aradnā an yub'dilahumā rabbuhumā khayran min'hu zakatan wa-aqraba ruḥ'ma

وَأَمَّا ٱلۡجِدَارُ فَكَانَ لِغُلَـٰمَیۡنِ یَتِیمَیۡنِ فِی ٱلۡمَدِینَةِ وَكَانَ تَحۡتَهُۥ كَنزࣱ لَّهُمَا وَكَانَ أَبُوهُمَا صَـٰلِحࣰا فَأَرَادَ رَبُّكَ أَن یَبۡلُغَاۤ أَشُدَّهُمَا وَیَسۡتَخۡرِجَا كَنزَهُمَا رَحۡمَةࣰ مِّن رَّبِّكَۚ وَمَا فَعَلۡتُهُۥ عَنۡ أَمۡرِیۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ تَأۡوِیلُ مَا لَمۡ تَسۡطِع عَّلَیۡهِ صَبۡرࣰا ۝٨٢

As for the wall, it belonged to 2 orphan boys in the town and there was a treasure for them under it. Since their father was a righteous man, your Lord intended that they should attain their age of full strength and then take out their treasure as a Mercy from your Lord. I did not do them by my own will. That is the interpretation of (those actions) over which you could not hold patience.”

wa-ammā l-jidāru fakāna lighulāmayni yatīmayni fī l-madīnati wakāna taḥtahu kanzun lahumā wakāna abūhumā ṣāliḥan fa-arāda rabbuka an yablughā ashuddahumā wayastakhrijā kanzahumā raḥmatan min rabbika wamā faʿaltuhu ʿan amrī dhālika tawīlu mā lam tasṭiʿ ʿalayhi ṣabra

11 Dhu-l-qarnain — Gog and Magog

وَیَسۡءَلُونَكَ عَن ذِی ٱلۡقَرۡنَیۡنِۖ قُلۡ سَأَتۡلُوا۟ عَلَیۡكُم مِّنۡهُ ذِكۡرًا ۝٨٣

And (O Muhammad) they ask you about Dhul-Qarnain. Say: “I shall recite to you something of him.”

wayasalūnaka ʿan dhī l-qarnayni qul sa-atlū ʿalaykum min'hu dhik'ra

إِنَّا مَكَّنَّا لَهُۥ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُ مِن كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ سَبَبࣰا ۝٨٤

Surely, We established him in the earth and gave him means of everything.

innā makkannā lahu fī l-arḍi waātaynāhu min kulli shayin sababa

فَأَتۡبَعَ سَبَبًا ۝٨٥

So he followed a way (towards the west)

fa-atbaʿa sababa

حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا بَلَغَ مَغۡرِبَ ٱلشَّمۡسِ وَجَدَهَا تَغۡرُبُ فِی عَیۡنٍ حَمِئَةࣲ وَوَجَدَ عِندَهَا قَوۡمࣰاۖ قُلۡنَا یَـٰذَا ٱلۡقَرۡنَیۡنِ إِمَّاۤ أَن تُعَذِّبَ وَإِمَّاۤ أَن تَتَّخِذَ فِیهِمۡ حُسۡنࣰا ۝٨٦

until, when he reached the setting place of the sun, he found it setting in a spring of black muddy water. He found a people near it. We said: “O Dhul-Qarnain! Either you punish them, or treat them with kindness.”

ḥattā idhā balagha maghriba l-shamsi wajadahā taghrubu fī ʿaynin ḥami-atin wawajada ʿindahā qawman qul'nā yādhā l-qarnayni immā an tuʿadhiba wa-immā an tattakhidha fīhim ḥus'na

قَالَ أَمَّا مَن ظَلَمَ فَسَوۡفَ نُعَذِّبُهُۥ ثُمَّ یُرَدُّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ فَیُعَذِّبُهُۥ عَذَابࣰا نُّكۡرࣰا ۝٨٧

He said (to people): “Whoever will do wrong, we shall punish him; then he will be brought back to the Lord, who will punish with a terrible punishment.

qāla ammā man ẓalama fasawfa nuʿadhibuhu thumma yuraddu ilā rabbihi fayuʿadhibuhu ʿadhāban nuk'ra

وَأَمَّا مَنۡ ءَامَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَـٰلِحࣰا فَلَهُۥ جَزَاۤءً ٱلۡحُسۡنَىٰۖ وَسَنَقُولُ لَهُۥ مِنۡ أَمۡرِنَا یُسۡرࣰا ۝٨٨

As for him who believes and does righteous deeds, he shall have the best reward (Paradise), and we (Dhul-Qarnain) shall speak to him with mild words.”

wa-ammā man āmana waʿamila ṣāliḥan falahu jazāan l-ḥus'nā wasanaqūlu lahu min amrinā yus'ra

ثُمَّ أَتۡبَعَ سَبَبًا ۝٨٩

Then he followed another way (towards the east)

thumma atbaʿa sababa

حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا بَلَغَ مَطۡلِعَ ٱلشَّمۡسِ وَجَدَهَا تَطۡلُعُ عَلَىٰ قَوۡمࣲ لَّمۡ نَجۡعَل لَّهُم مِّن دُونِهَا سِتۡرࣰا ۝٩٠

until, when he reached the rising place of the sun, he found it rising on a people for whom We had not provided any shelter against it (the sun).

ḥattā idhā balagha maṭliʿa l-shamsi wajadahā taṭluʿu ʿalā qawmin lam najʿal lahum min dūnihā sit'ra

كَذَ ٰلِكَۖ وَقَدۡ أَحَطۡنَا بِمَا لَدَیۡهِ خُبۡرࣰا ۝٩١

(He left them) as it was! And We knew whatever information was with him (Dhul-Qarnain).

kadhālika waqad aḥaṭnā bimā ladayhi khub'ra

ثُمَّ أَتۡبَعَ سَبَبًا ۝٩٢

Then he followed (another) way

thumma atbaʿa sababa

حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا بَلَغَ بَیۡنَ ٱلسَّدَّیۡنِ وَجَدَ مِن دُونِهِمَا قَوۡمࣰا لَّا یَكَادُونَ یَفۡقَهُونَ قَوۡلࣰا ۝٩٣

until, when he reached between 2 mountains where he found (near) them a people who almost did not understood a word.

ḥattā idhā balagha bayna l-sadayni wajada min dūnihimā qawman lā yakādūna yafqahūna qawla

قَالُوا۟ یَـٰذَا ٱلۡقَرۡنَیۡنِ إِنَّ یَأۡجُوجَ وَمَأۡجُوجَ مُفۡسِدُونَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَهَلۡ نَجۡعَلُ لَكَ خَرۡجًا عَلَىٰۤ أَن تَجۡعَلَ بَیۡنَنَا وَبَیۡنَهُمۡ سَدࣰّا ۝٩٤

They said: “O Dhul-Qarnain! Surely! (The people of) Gog and Magog are doing mischief in the land. Shall we pay to you a tribute in order that you make a barrier between us and them?”

qālū yādhā l-qarnayni inna yajūja wamajūja muf'sidūna fī l-arḍi fahal najʿalu laka kharjan ʿalā an tajʿala baynanā wabaynahum sadda

قَالَ مَا مَكَّنِّی فِیهِ رَبِّی خَیۡرࣱ فَأَعِینُونِی بِقُوَّةٍ أَجۡعَلۡ بَیۡنَكُمۡ وَبَیۡنَهُمۡ رَدۡمًا ۝٩٥

He said: “What my Lord has granted me is better (than your tribute). Just help me with strength (manpower) and I will erect a barrier between you and them.

qāla mā makkannī fīhi rabbī khayrun fa-aʿīnūnī biquwwatin ajʿal baynakum wabaynahum radma

ءَاتُونِی زُبَرَ ٱلۡحَدِیدِۖ حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا سَاوَىٰ بَیۡنَ ٱلصَّدَفَیۡنِ قَالَ ٱنفُخُوا۟ۖ حَتَّىٰۤ إِذَا جَعَلَهُۥ نَارࣰا قَالَ ءَاتُونِیۤ أُفۡرِغۡ عَلَیۡهِ قِطۡرࣰا ۝٩٦

Give me pieces (blocks) of iron.” Until when he leveled the gap between the 2 mountain-cliffs, he said: “Blow,” until when he had made it (red iron) fire, he said: “Bring me molten copper to pour over it.”

ātūnī zubara l-ḥadīdi ḥattā idhā sāwā bayna l-ṣadafayni qāla unfukhū ḥattā idhā jaʿalahu nāran qāla ātūnī uf'righ ʿalayhi qiṭ'ra

فَمَا ٱسۡطَـٰعُوۤا۟ أَن یَظۡهَرُوهُ وَمَا ٱسۡتَطَـٰعُوا۟ لَهُۥ نَقۡبࣰا ۝٩٧

So they (Gog and Magog) could not scale it nor could they dig through.

famā is'ṭāʿū an yaẓharūhu wamā is'taṭāʿū lahu naqba

قَالَ هَـٰذَا رَحۡمَةࣱ مِّن رَّبِّیۖ فَإِذَا جَاۤءَ وَعۡدُ رَبِّی جَعَلَهُۥ دَكَّاۤءَۖ وَكَانَ وَعۡدُ رَبِّی حَقࣰّا ۝٩٨

(Dhul-Qarnain) said: “This is a Mercy from my Lord. But when the Promise of my Lord will come, He shall make it flat (leveled). Promise of my Lord is true.”

qāla hādhā raḥmatun min rabbī fa-idhā jāa waʿdu rabbī jaʿalahu dakkāa wakāna waʿdu rabbī ḥaqqa

۞ وَتَرَكۡنَا بَعۡضَهُمۡ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ یَمُوجُ فِی بَعۡضࣲۖ وَنُفِخَ فِی ٱلصُّورِ فَجَمَعۡنَـٰهُمۡ جَمۡعࣰا ۝٩٩

And that Day (when Gog and Magog will come out), We shall leave some of people to surge like waves on others. The trumpet will be blown and We shall collect them (the creatures) all together.

wataraknā baʿḍahum yawma-idhin yamūju fī baʿḍin wanufikha fī l-ṣūri fajamaʿnāhum jamʿa

وَعَرَضۡنَا جَهَنَّمَ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ لِّلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ عَرۡضًا ۝١٠٠

On that Day We shall present hell to the disbelievers with plain view,

waʿaraḍnā jahannama yawma-idhin lil'kāfirīna ʿarḍa

ٱلَّذِینَ كَانَتۡ أَعۡیُنُهُمۡ فِی غِطَاۤءٍ عَن ذِكۡرِی وَكَانُوا۟ لَا یَسۡتَطِیعُونَ سَمۡعًا ۝١٠١

(to) those whose eyes had been under a covering from My Reminder (this Qur’an), and who could not bear to hear it.

alladhīna kānat aʿyunuhum fī ghiṭāin ʿan dhik'rī wakānū lā yastaṭīʿūna samʿa

12 Christian Nations

أَفَحَسِبَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوۤا۟ أَن یَتَّخِذُوا۟ عِبَادِی مِن دُونِیۤ أَوۡلِیَاۤءَۚ إِنَّاۤ أَعۡتَدۡنَا جَهَنَّمَ لِلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ نُزُلࣰا ۝١٠٢

Do the disbelievers then think that they can take My Servants as protectors besides Me? Surely, We have prepared hell as an entertainment for the disbelievers.

afaḥasiba alladhīna kafarū an yattakhidhū ʿibādī min dūnī awliyāa innā aʿtadnā jahannama lil'kāfirīna nuzula

قُلۡ هَلۡ نُنَبِّئُكُم بِٱلۡأَخۡسَرِینَ أَعۡمَـٰلًا ۝١٠٣

Say (O Muhammad): “Should We inform you of the greatest losers in respect of deeds?

qul hal nunabbi-ukum bil-akhsarīna aʿmāla

ٱلَّذِینَ ضَلَّ سَعۡیُهُمۡ فِی ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَهُمۡ یَحۡسَبُونَ أَنَّهُمۡ یُحۡسِنُونَ صُنۡعًا ۝١٠٤

Those whose efforts have been wasted in the worldly life while they thought that they were acquiring good by their deeds

alladhīna ḍalla saʿyuhum fī l-ḥayati l-dun'yā wahum yaḥsabūna annahum yuḥ'sinūna ṣun'ʿa

أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِ رَبِّهِمۡ وَلِقَاۤىِٕهِۦ فَحَبِطَتۡ أَعۡمَـٰلُهُمۡ فَلَا نُقِیمُ لَهُمۡ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ وَزۡنࣰا ۝١٠٥

they are those who disbelieve in the Verses of their Lord and the meeting with Him (Hereafter). So their deeds will be in vain, We shall not assign any weight (reward) on the Day of Resurrection for them.

ulāika alladhīna kafarū biāyāti rabbihim waliqāihi faḥabiṭat aʿmāluhum falā nuqīmu lahum yawma l-qiyāmati wazna

ذَ ٰلِكَ جَزَاۤؤُهُمۡ جَهَنَّمُ بِمَا كَفَرُوا۟ وَٱتَّخَذُوۤا۟ ءَایَـٰتِی وَرُسُلِی هُزُوًا ۝١٠٦

Thus their recompense will be hell; because they disbelieved, took My Verses and My Messengers as a joke.

dhālika jazāuhum jahannamu bimā kafarū wa-ittakhadhū āyātī warusulī huzuwa

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ كَانَتۡ لَهُمۡ جَنَّـٰتُ ٱلۡفِرۡدَوۡسِ نُزُلًا ۝١٠٧

Surely! Those who believe and do righteous deeds, they will be entertained with the gardens of Paradise.

inna alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti kānat lahum jannātu l-fir'dawsi nuzula

خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَا لَا یَبۡغُونَ عَنۡهَا حِوَلࣰا ۝١٠٨

They will reside in it forever. They will never desire for removal from there.”

khālidīna fīhā lā yabghūna ʿanhā ḥiwala

قُل لَّوۡ كَانَ ٱلۡبَحۡرُ مِدَادࣰا لِّكَلِمَـٰتِ رَبِّی لَنَفِدَ ٱلۡبَحۡرُ قَبۡلَ أَن تَنفَدَ كَلِمَـٰتُ رَبِّی وَلَوۡ جِئۡنَا بِمِثۡلِهِۦ مَدَدࣰا ۝١٠٩

Say (O Muhammad to mankind): “If the sea were ink for (writing) the Words of my Lord, the sea would be exhausted before the Words of my Lord would be exhausted, even if We brought (another sea) like it for its aid.”

qul law kāna l-baḥru midādan likalimāti rabbī lanafida l-baḥru qabla an tanfada kalimātu rabbī walaw ji'nā bimith'lihi madada

قُلۡ إِنَّمَاۤ أَنَا۠ بَشَرࣱ مِّثۡلُكُمۡ یُوحَىٰۤ إِلَیَّ أَنَّمَاۤ إِلَـٰهُكُمۡ إِلَـٰهࣱ وَ ٰحِدࣱۖ فَمَن كَانَ یَرۡجُوا۟ لِقَاۤءَ رَبِّهِۦ فَلۡیَعۡمَلۡ عَمَلࣰا صَـٰلِحࣰا وَلَا یُشۡرِكۡ بِعِبَادَةِ رَبِّهِۦۤ أَحَدَۢا ۝١١٠

Say (O Muhammad): “I am but a human like you. It has been revealed to me that your deity is One (Allah). So whoever has hopes for the meeting with the Lord, let him do righteous deeds and don’t associate anyone as a partner in the worship of the Lord.”

qul innamā anā basharun mith'lukum yūḥā ilayya annamā ilāhukum ilāhun wāḥidun faman kāna yarjū liqāa rabbihi falyaʿmal ʿamalan ṣāliḥan walā yush'rik biʿibādati rabbihi aḥada
