1 A Warner for all Nations

۞ تَبَارَكَ ٱلَّذِی نَزَّلَ ٱلۡفُرۡقَانَ عَلَىٰ عَبۡدِهِۦ لِیَكُونَ لِلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ نَذِیرًا ۝١

Highly blessed is He, Who has sent down Al-Furqan, to His servant so that it may be a warner to all mankind

tabāraka alladhī nazzala l-fur'qāna ʿalā ʿabdihi liyakūna lil'ʿālamīna nadhīra

ٱلَّذِی لَهُۥ مُلۡكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَمۡ یَتَّخِذۡ وَلَدࣰا وَلَمۡ یَكُن لَّهُۥ شَرِیكࣱ فِی ٱلۡمُلۡكِ وَخَلَقَ كُلَّ شَیۡءࣲ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ تَقۡدِیرࣰا ۝٢

He to Whom belongs the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth: Who has begotten no son: Who has no partner in His Sovereignty: Who created each and every thing and then ordained its destiny

alladhī lahu mul'ku l-samāwāti wal-arḍi walam yattakhidh waladan walam yakun lahu sharīkun fī l-mul'ki wakhalaqa kulla shayin faqaddarahu taqdīra

وَٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مِن دُونِهِۦۤ ءَالِهَةࣰ لَّا یَخۡلُقُونَ شَیۡءࣰا وَهُمۡ یُخۡلَقُونَ وَلَا یَمۡلِكُونَ لِأَنفُسِهِمۡ ضَرࣰّا وَلَا نَفۡعࣰا وَلَا یَمۡلِكُونَ مَوۡتࣰا وَلَا حَیَوٰةࣰ وَلَا نُشُورࣰا ۝٣

Yet the people have set up, besides Him, deities, who do not create anything but are themselves created: who can neither harm nor help even themselves: who have no power over life or death, nor can they raise up the dead

wa-ittakhadhū min dūnihi ālihatan lā yakhluqūna shayan wahum yukh'laqūna walā yamlikūna li-anfusihim ḍarran walā nafʿan walā yamlikūna mawtan walā ḥayatan walā nushūra

وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوۤا۟ إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّاۤ إِفۡكٌ ٱفۡتَرَىٰهُ وَأَعَانَهُۥ عَلَیۡهِ قَوۡمٌ ءَاخَرُونَۖ فَقَدۡ جَاۤءُو ظُلۡمࣰا وَزُورࣰا ۝٤

Those who have rejected the Message of the Prophet, say, "This (A1-Furgan) is a forgery which this man himself has devised, and some others have helped him at it. " What a cruel injustice and an impudent lie

waqāla alladhīna kafarū in hādhā illā if'kun if'tarāhu wa-aʿānahu ʿalayhi qawmun ākharūna faqad jāū ẓul'man wazūra

وَقَالُوۤا۟ أَسَـٰطِیرُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ٱكۡتَتَبَهَا فَهِیَ تُمۡلَىٰ عَلَیۡهِ بُكۡرَةࣰ وَأَصِیلࣰا ۝٥

They say, "These things are the writings of the ancients which he has got copied down for himself, and then these are recited to him in the morning and evening.´´

waqālū asāṭīru l-awalīna ik'tatabahā fahiya tum'lā ʿalayhi buk'ratan wa-aṣīla

قُلۡ أَنزَلَهُ ٱلَّذِی یَعۡلَمُ ٱلسِّرَّ فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ غَفُورࣰا رَّحِیمࣰا ۝٦

O Muhammad, say to them, "This has been sent down by Him, Who knows the secret of the heavens and the earth." The fact is that He is very Forgiving and Merciful

qul anzalahu alladhī yaʿlamu l-sira fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi innahu kāna ghafūran raḥīma

وَقَالُوا۟ مَالِ هَـٰذَا ٱلرَّسُولِ یَأۡكُلُ ٱلطَّعَامَ وَیَمۡشِی فِی ٱلۡأَسۡوَاقِ لَوۡلَاۤ أُنزِلَ إِلَیۡهِ مَلَكࣱ فَیَكُونَ مَعَهُۥ نَذِیرًا ۝٧

They say, "What sort of a Messenger is he that he eats food and moves about in the streets? Why has not an angel been sent down to accompany him and threaten (the disbelievers)

waqālū māli hādhā l-rasūli yakulu l-ṭaʿāma wayamshī fī l-aswāqi lawlā unzila ilayhi malakun fayakūna maʿahu nadhīra

أَوۡ یُلۡقَىٰۤ إِلَیۡهِ كَنزٌ أَوۡ تَكُونُ لَهُۥ جَنَّةࣱ یَأۡكُلُ مِنۡهَاۚ وَقَالَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ إِن تَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا رَجُلࣰا مَّسۡحُورًا ۝٨

Or why has not at least a treasure been sent down for him or a garden given to him for (easy) sustenance?" And the wicked people say, "You are following a man bewitched."

aw yul'qā ilayhi kanzun aw takūnu lahu jannatun yakulu min'hā waqāla l-ẓālimūna in tattabiʿūna illā rajulan masḥūra

ٱنظُرۡ كَیۡفَ ضَرَبُوا۟ لَكَ ٱلۡأَمۡثَـٰلَ فَضَلُّوا۟ فَلَا یَسۡتَطِیعُونَ سَبِیلࣰا ۝٩

Just see what strange arguments they bring forward with regard to you! They have gone so far astray that they cannot charge any thing against you

unẓur kayfa ḍarabū laka l-amthāla faḍallū falā yastaṭīʿūna sabīla

2 Truth of Warning

تَبَارَكَ ٱلَّذِیۤ إِن شَاۤءَ جَعَلَ لَكَ خَیۡرࣰا مِّن ذَ ٰلِكَ جَنَّـٰتࣲ تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ وَیَجۡعَل لَّكَ قُصُورَۢا ۝١٠

Highly blessed is He, Who, if He wills, could give you much more and better things than what they propose for you: (Not one but) many gardens, beneath which rivers flow; and big castles

tabāraka alladhī in shāa jaʿala laka khayran min dhālika jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru wayajʿal laka quṣūra

بَلۡ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِٱلسَّاعَةِۖ وَأَعۡتَدۡنَا لِمَن كَذَّبَ بِٱلسَّاعَةِ سَعِیرًا ۝١١

The fact of the matter is that these people have denied "the Hour", --And for the one who denies the coming of the Hour, We have prepared a blazing Fire

bal kadhabū bil-sāʿati wa-aʿtadnā liman kadhaba bil-sāʿati saʿīra

إِذَا رَأَتۡهُم مِّن مَّكَانِۭ بَعِیدࣲ سَمِعُوا۟ لَهَا تَغَیُّظࣰا وَزَفِیرࣰا ۝١٢

When it will see them from afar, they will hear the sounds of its raging and roaring

idhā ra-athum min makānin baʿīdin samiʿū lahā taghayyuẓan wazafīra

وَإِذَاۤ أُلۡقُوا۟ مِنۡهَا مَكَانࣰا ضَیِّقࣰا مُّقَرَّنِینَ دَعَوۡا۟ هُنَالِكَ ثُبُورࣰا ۝١٣

And when they are chained together and flung into a narrow space therein, they will begin to call for death

wa-idhā ul'qū min'hā makānan ḍayyiqan muqarranīna daʿaw hunālika thubūra

لَّا تَدۡعُوا۟ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ ثُبُورࣰا وَ ٰحِدࣰا وَٱدۡعُوا۟ ثُبُورࣰا كَثِیرࣰا ۝١٤

(Then it will be said to them:) "Do not call for one death today, but call for many deaths."

lā tadʿū l-yawma thubūran wāḥidan wa-id'ʿū thubūran kathīra

قُلۡ أَذَ ٰلِكَ خَیۡرٌ أَمۡ جَنَّةُ ٱلۡخُلۡدِ ٱلَّتِی وُعِدَ ٱلۡمُتَّقُونَۚ كَانَتۡ لَهُمۡ جَزَاۤءࣰ وَمَصِیرࣰا ۝١٥

Ask them "Is this (Fire) better or the everlasting Garden which has been promised to the God-fearing righteous people?" which will be the recompense of their good deeds and the final destination of their journe

qul adhālika khayrun am jannatu l-khul'di allatī wuʿida l-mutaqūna kānat lahum jazāan wamaṣīra

لَّهُمۡ فِیهَا مَا یَشَاۤءُونَ خَـٰلِدِینَۚ كَانَ عَلَىٰ رَبِّكَ وَعۡدࣰا مَّسۡءُولࣰا ۝١٦

wherein they will get everything they desire and wherein they will dwell for ever. This is a promise which your Lord has taken upon Himself to fulfil

lahum fīhā mā yashāūna khālidīna kāna ʿalā rabbika waʿdan masūla

وَیَوۡمَ یَحۡشُرُهُمۡ وَمَا یَعۡبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ فَیَقُولُ ءَأَنتُمۡ أَضۡلَلۡتُمۡ عِبَادِی هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ أَمۡ هُمۡ ضَلُّوا۟ ٱلسَّبِیلَ ۝١٧

And on that Day your Lord will gather these people together as well as their deities, whom they worship besides AIlah. Then He will ask them, "Did you mislead these servants of Mine, or did they themselves go astray?"

wayawma yaḥshuruhum wamā yaʿbudūna min dūni l-lahi fayaqūlu a-antum aḍlaltum ʿibādī hāulāi am hum ḍallū l-sabīl

قَالُوا۟ سُبۡحَـٰنَكَ مَا كَانَ یَنۢبَغِی لَنَاۤ أَن نَّتَّخِذَ مِن دُونِكَ مِنۡ أَوۡلِیَاۤءَ وَلَـٰكِن مَّتَّعۡتَهُمۡ وَءَابَاۤءَهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ نَسُوا۟ ٱلذِّكۡرَ وَكَانُوا۟ قَوۡمَۢا بُورࣰا ۝١٨

They will answer, "Glory be to Thee! We dared not take anyguardian besides Thee: (they were misled because) Thou didst give them and their forefathers all the good things of life till they forgot the Admonition, and incurred the punishment. "

qālū sub'ḥānaka mā kāna yanbaghī lanā an nattakhidha min dūnika min awliyāa walākin mattaʿtahum waābāahum ḥattā nasū l-dhik'ra wakānū qawman būra

فَقَدۡ كَذَّبُوكُم بِمَا تَقُولُونَ فَمَا تَسۡتَطِیعُونَ صَرۡفࣰا وَلَا نَصۡرࣰاۚ وَمَن یَظۡلِم مِّنكُمۡ نُذِقۡهُ عَذَابࣰا كَبِیرࣰا ۝١٩

Thus will your gods deny alI that you are professing today. Then you shall neither be able to repel your punishment nor shall get any help from anywhere; and whoso is guilty. of iniquity´´ among you, We shall make him taste a severe torment

faqad kadhabūkum bimā taqūlūna famā tastaṭīʿūna ṣarfan walā naṣran waman yaẓlim minkum nudhiq'hu ʿadhāban kabīra

وَمَاۤ أَرۡسَلۡنَا قَبۡلَكَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ إِلَّاۤ إِنَّهُمۡ لَیَأۡكُلُونَ ٱلطَّعَامَ وَیَمۡشُونَ فِی ٱلۡأَسۡوَاقِۗ وَجَعَلۡنَا بَعۡضَكُمۡ لِبَعۡضࣲ فِتۡنَةً أَتَصۡبِرُونَۗ وَكَانَ رَبُّكَ بَصِیرࣰا ۝٢٠

O Muhammad, all the Messengers whom We sent before you also ate food and moved about in the streets. In fact, We have made you all a means of test for one another. Will you show patience? for your Lord sees everything

wamā arsalnā qablaka mina l-mur'salīna illā innahum layakulūna l-ṭaʿāma wayamshūna fī l-aswāqi wajaʿalnā baʿḍakum libaʿḍin fit'natan ataṣbirūna wakāna rabbuka baṣīra

3 Day of Discrimination

۞ وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یَرۡجُونَ لِقَاۤءَنَا لَوۡلَاۤ أُنزِلَ عَلَیۡنَا ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ أَوۡ نَرَىٰ رَبَّنَاۗ لَقَدِ ٱسۡتَكۡبَرُوا۟ فِیۤ أَنفُسِهِمۡ وَعَتَوۡ عُتُوࣰّا كَبِیرࣰا ۝٢١

Those people, who have no fear of coming before Us, say,"Why should not the angels be sent down to us? Or else we should see our Lord. " Great arrogance have they assumed in regard to themselves, and have transgressed all limits in their rebellion

waqāla alladhīna lā yarjūna liqāanā lawlā unzila ʿalaynā l-malāikatu aw narā rabbanā laqadi is'takbarū fī anfusihim waʿataw ʿutuwwan kabīra

یَوۡمَ یَرَوۡنَ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةَ لَا بُشۡرَىٰ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ لِّلۡمُجۡرِمِینَ وَیَقُولُونَ حِجۡرࣰا مَّحۡجُورࣰا ۝٢٢

The Day, when they will see the angels, will not be a day of rejoicing for the criminals; they will cry out, "May Allah save us!"

yawma yarawna l-malāikata lā bush'rā yawma-idhin lil'muj'rimīna wayaqūlūna ḥij'ran maḥjūra

وَقَدِمۡنَاۤ إِلَىٰ مَا عَمِلُوا۟ مِنۡ عَمَلࣲ فَجَعَلۡنَـٰهُ هَبَاۤءࣰ مَّنثُورًا ۝٢٣

Then We shall turn to what they had done and render it vain like scattered dust

waqadim'nā ilā mā ʿamilū min ʿamalin fajaʿalnāhu habāan manthūra

أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلۡجَنَّةِ یَوۡمَىِٕذٍ خَیۡرࣱ مُّسۡتَقَرࣰّا وَأَحۡسَنُ مَقِیلࣰا ۝٢٤

(On the contrary) only those who have deserved the Garden, will have a good abode on that Day and a cool place for midday rest

aṣḥābu l-janati yawma-idhin khayrun mus'taqarran wa-aḥsanu maqīla

وَیَوۡمَ تَشَقَّقُ ٱلسَّمَاۤءُ بِٱلۡغَمَـٰمِ وَنُزِّلَ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةُ تَنزِیلًا ۝٢٥

On that Day, a cloud will appear rending the sky and the angels will be senthi down rank after rank

wayawma tashaqqaqu l-samāu bil-ghamāmi wanuzzila l-malāikatu tanzīla

ٱلۡمُلۡكُ یَوۡمَىِٕذٍ ٱلۡحَقُّ لِلرَّحۡمَـٰنِۚ وَكَانَ یَوۡمًا عَلَى ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ عَسِیرࣰا ۝٢٦

The real Kingdom on that Day will belong only to the Merciful, and it will be a very hard Day for the disbelievers

al-mul'ku yawma-idhin l-ḥaqu lilrraḥmāni wakāna yawman ʿalā l-kāfirīna ʿasīra

وَیَوۡمَ یَعَضُّ ٱلظَّالِمُ عَلَىٰ یَدَیۡهِ یَقُولُ یَـٰلَیۡتَنِی ٱتَّخَذۡتُ مَعَ ٱلرَّسُولِ سَبِیلࣰا ۝٢٧

The unjust man will bite at his hand and say, "Would that I had stood by the Messenger

wayawma yaʿaḍḍu l-ẓālimu ʿalā yadayhi yaqūlu yālaytanī ittakhadhtu maʿa l-rasūli sabīla

یَـٰوَیۡلَتَىٰ لَیۡتَنِی لَمۡ أَتَّخِذۡ فُلَانًا خَلِیلࣰا ۝٢٨

O, woe to me! Would that I had not chosen so and so for a friend

yāwaylatā laytanī lam attakhidh fulānan khalīla

لَّقَدۡ أَضَلَّنِی عَنِ ٱلذِّكۡرِ بَعۡدَ إِذۡ جَاۤءَنِیۗ وَكَانَ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُ لِلۡإِنسَـٰنِ خَذُولࣰا ۝٢٩

For it was he, who had deluded me to reject the Admonition which had come to me. Satan has proved very treacherous to man. "

laqad aḍallanī ʿani l-dhik'ri baʿda idh jāanī wakāna l-shayṭānu lil'insāni khadhūla

وَقَالَ ٱلرَّسُولُ یَـٰرَبِّ إِنَّ قَوۡمِی ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ هَـٰذَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ مَهۡجُورࣰا ۝٣٠

And the Messenger will say, "O my Lord, my people had made this Qur´an the object of their ridicule."

waqāla l-rasūlu yārabbi inna qawmī ittakhadhū hādhā l-qur'āna mahjūra

وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ جَعَلۡنَا لِكُلِّ نَبِیٍّ عَدُوࣰّا مِّنَ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِینَۗ وَكَفَىٰ بِرَبِّكَ هَادِیࣰا وَنَصِیرࣰا ۝٣١

O Muhammad, in this very way We have made the criminals the enemies of every Prophet, but your Lord suffices for you as your Guide and Helper

wakadhālika jaʿalnā likulli nabiyyin ʿaduwwan mina l-muj'rimīna wakafā birabbika hādiyan wanaṣīra

وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَوۡلَا نُزِّلَ عَلَیۡهِ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانُ جُمۡلَةࣰ وَ ٰحِدَةࣰۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ لِنُثَبِّتَ بِهِۦ فُؤَادَكَۖ وَرَتَّلۡنَـٰهُ تَرۡتِیلࣰا ۝٣٢

The disbelievers say, "Why has not the entire Qur´an been sent down to this man all at nce?" -Well, this has been done to impress it deeply on your mind, and (for the same object) We have sent it down piecemeal by degrees

waqāla alladhīna kafarū lawlā nuzzila ʿalayhi l-qur'ānu jum'latan wāḥidatan kadhālika linuthabbita bihi fuādaka warattalnāhu tartīla

وَلَا یَأۡتُونَكَ بِمَثَلٍ إِلَّا جِئۡنَـٰكَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَأَحۡسَنَ تَفۡسِیرًا ۝٣٣

And (there is another wisdom in this: whenever they brought to you an odd thing (or a strange question), We sent its right answer to you in time and explained it all in the best manner

walā yatūnaka bimathalin illā ji'nāka bil-ḥaqi wa-aḥsana tafsīra

ٱلَّذِینَ یُحۡشَرُونَ عَلَىٰ وُجُوهِهِمۡ إِلَىٰ جَهَنَّمَ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ شَرࣱّ مَّكَانࣰا وَأَضَلُّ سَبِیلࣰا ۝٣٤

those who are going to be driven to Hell upon their faces, have taken an utterly wrong stand and their way is most erroneous

alladhīna yuḥ'sharūna ʿalā wujūhihim ilā jahannama ulāika sharrun makānan wa-aḍallu sabīla

4 Lesson in Fate of Former People

وَلَقَدۡ ءَاتَیۡنَا مُوسَى ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَجَعَلۡنَا مَعَهُۥۤ أَخَاهُ هَـٰرُونَ وَزِیرࣰا ۝٣٥

We gave Moses the Book and appointed his brother Aaron as his counsellor

walaqad ātaynā mūsā l-kitāba wajaʿalnā maʿahu akhāhu hārūna wazīra

فَقُلۡنَا ٱذۡهَبَاۤ إِلَى ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلَّذِینَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا فَدَمَّرۡنَـٰهُمۡ تَدۡمِیرࣰا ۝٣٦

then We said to them, "Go to the people who have treated Our Revelations as false. " So We annihilated those people utterly

faqul'nā idh'habā ilā l-qawmi alladhīna kadhabū biāyātinā fadammarnāhum tadmīra

وَقَوۡمَ نُوحࣲ لَّمَّا كَذَّبُوا۟ ٱلرُّسُلَ أَغۡرَقۡنَـٰهُمۡ وَجَعَلۡنَـٰهُمۡ لِلنَّاسِ ءَایَةࣰۖ وَأَعۡتَدۡنَا لِلظَّـٰلِمِینَ عَذَابًا أَلِیمࣰا ۝٣٧

The same was the case with the people of Noah when they charged the Messenger with imposture: We drowned them and made them a sign of warning for entire mankind, and We have prepared a painful chastisement for the unjust

waqawma nūḥin lammā kadhabū l-rusula aghraqnāhum wajaʿalnāhum lilnnāsi āyatan wa-aʿtadnā lilẓẓālimīna ʿadhāban alīma

وَعَادࣰا وَثَمُودَا۟ وَأَصۡحَـٰبَ ٱلرَّسِّ وَقُرُونَۢا بَیۡنَ ذَ ٰلِكَ كَثِیرࣰا ۝٣٨

Likewise were destroyed the ´Ad and the Thamud and the people of the Rass, and many a generation in between

waʿādan wathamūdā wa-aṣḥāba l-rasi waqurūnan bayna dhālika kathīra

وَكُلࣰّا ضَرَبۡنَا لَهُ ٱلۡأَمۡثَـٰلَۖ وَكُلࣰّا تَبَّرۡنَا تَتۡبِیرࣰا ۝٣٩

We admonished each one of them by citing the examples (of those who were destroyed before them) and ultimately annihilated all of them

wakullan ḍarabnā lahu l-amthāla wakullan tabbarnā tatbīra

وَلَقَدۡ أَتَوۡا۟ عَلَى ٱلۡقَرۡیَةِ ٱلَّتِیۤ أُمۡطِرَتۡ مَطَرَ ٱلسَّوۡءِۚ أَفَلَمۡ یَكُونُوا۟ یَرَوۡنَهَاۚ بَلۡ كَانُوا۟ لَا یَرۡجُونَ نُشُورࣰا ۝٤٠

Surely, these people have passed by that habitation on which was rained an evil rain: have they not seen its ruins? But they do not expect another life in the Hereafter

walaqad ataw ʿalā l-qaryati allatī um'ṭirat maṭara l-sawi afalam yakūnū yarawnahā bal kānū lā yarjūna nushūra

وَإِذَا رَأَوۡكَ إِن یَتَّخِذُونَكَ إِلَّا هُزُوًا أَهَـٰذَا ٱلَّذِی بَعَثَ ٱللَّهُ رَسُولًا ۝٤١

When these people see you, they scoff at you, (saying), "Is this the man whom Allah has sent as His Messenger

wa-idhā ra-awka in yattakhidhūnaka illā huzuwan ahādhā alladhī baʿatha l-lahu rasūla

إِن كَادَ لَیُضِلُّنَا عَنۡ ءَالِهَتِنَا لَوۡلَاۤ أَن صَبَرۡنَا عَلَیۡهَاۚ وَسَوۡفَ یَعۡلَمُونَ حِینَ یَرَوۡنَ ٱلۡعَذَابَ مَنۡ أَضَلُّ سَبِیلًا ۝٤٢

He had almost led us astray from our gods, had we not remained firm in our faith with regard to them. " The time is not far when they will see the torment and realize who had strayed far from the truth

in kāda layuḍillunā ʿan ālihatinā lawlā an ṣabarnā ʿalayhā wasawfa yaʿlamūna ḥīna yarawna l-ʿadhāba man aḍallu sabīla

أَرَءَیۡتَ مَنِ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَـٰهَهُۥ هَوَىٰهُ أَفَأَنتَ تَكُونُ عَلَیۡهِ وَكِیلًا ۝٤٣

Have you ever considered the case of the person who has made his lust his god? Can you take the responsibility of guiding such a one aright

ara-ayta mani ittakhadha ilāhahu hawāhu afa-anta takūnu ʿalayhi wakīla

أَمۡ تَحۡسَبُ أَنَّ أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ یَسۡمَعُونَ أَوۡ یَعۡقِلُونَۚ إِنۡ هُمۡ إِلَّا كَٱلۡأَنۡعَـٰمِ بَلۡ هُمۡ أَضَلُّ سَبِیلًا ۝٤٤

Do you think that most of them hear or understand? They are only like the cattle; nay, even worse than the cattle

am taḥsabu anna aktharahum yasmaʿūna aw yaʿqilūna in hum illā kal-anʿāmi bal hum aḍallu sabīla

5 The Transformation wrought

أَلَمۡ تَرَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ كَیۡفَ مَدَّ ٱلظِّلَّ وَلَوۡ شَاۤءَ لَجَعَلَهُۥ سَاكِنࣰا ثُمَّ جَعَلۡنَا ٱلشَّمۡسَ عَلَیۡهِ دَلِیلࣰا ۝٤٥

Have you not seen how your Lord lengthens out the shadow? Had He willed, He would have made it constant, but We have made the sun its pilot

alam tara ilā rabbika kayfa madda l-ẓila walaw shāa lajaʿalahu sākinan thumma jaʿalnā l-shamsa ʿalayhi dalīla

ثُمَّ قَبَضۡنَـٰهُ إِلَیۡنَا قَبۡضࣰا یَسِیرࣰا ۝٤٦

then (as the sun climbs up), We roll it up little by little towards Ourselves

thumma qabaḍnāhu ilaynā qabḍan yasīra

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِی جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلَّیۡلَ لِبَاسࣰا وَٱلنَّوۡمَ سُبَاتࣰا وَجَعَلَ ٱلنَّهَارَ نُشُورࣰا ۝٤٧

And it is Allah Who has ordained the night as a garment for you, and the sleep as a repose of death, and the day as the time of return to life

wahuwa alladhī jaʿala lakumu al-layla libāsan wal-nawma subātan wajaʿala l-nahāra nushūra

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَرۡسَلَ ٱلرِّیَـٰحَ بُشۡرَۢا بَیۡنَ یَدَیۡ رَحۡمَتِهِۦۚ وَأَنزَلۡنَا مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مَاۤءࣰ طَهُورࣰا ۝٤٨

And it is He, Who drives the winds to be the harbingers of His mercy: then He sends down pure water from the sk

wahuwa alladhī arsala l-riyāḥa bush'ran bayna yaday raḥmatihi wa-anzalnā mina l-samāi māan ṭahūra

لِّنُحۡـِۧیَ بِهِۦ بَلۡدَةࣰ مَّیۡتࣰا وَنُسۡقِیَهُۥ مِمَّا خَلَقۡنَاۤ أَنۡعَـٰمࣰا وَأَنَاسِیَّ كَثِیرࣰا ۝٤٩

so that He may revive the dead land, and quench the thirst of many of His creatures from among beasts and men

linuḥ'yiya bihi baldatan maytan wanus'qiyahu mimmā khalaqnā anʿāman wa-anāsiyya kathīra

وَلَقَدۡ صَرَّفۡنَـٰهُ بَیۡنَهُمۡ لِیَذَّكَّرُوا۟ فَأَبَىٰۤ أَكۡثَرُ ٱلنَّاسِ إِلَّا كُفُورࣰا ۝٥٠

We present the same phenomenon over and over again before them so that they may learn a lesson from it; but most people decline to adopt any other attitude than of disbelief and ingratitude

walaqad ṣarrafnāhu baynahum liyadhakkarū fa-abā aktharu l-nāsi illā kufūra

وَلَوۡ شِئۡنَا لَبَعَثۡنَا فِی كُلِّ قَرۡیَةࣲ نَّذِیرࣰا ۝٥١

Had We willed, We would have raised up a separate Warner in each habitation

walaw shi'nā labaʿathnā fī kulli qaryatin nadhīra

فَلَا تُطِعِ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ وَجَـٰهِدۡهُم بِهِۦ جِهَادࣰا كَبِیرࣰا ۝٥٢

So, O Prophet, do not yield to the disbelievers, but wage a Jihad against them with this Qur´an

falā tuṭiʿi l-kāfirīna wajāhid'hum bihi jihādan kabīra

۞ وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِی مَرَجَ ٱلۡبَحۡرَیۡنِ هَـٰذَا عَذۡبࣱ فُرَاتࣱ وَهَـٰذَا مِلۡحٌ أُجَاجࣱ وَجَعَلَ بَیۡنَهُمَا بَرۡزَخࣰا وَحِجۡرࣰا مَّحۡجُورࣰا ۝٥٣

And it is He, Who has let loose the two seas, one palatable and sweet, the other bitter and saltish, and there is a partition between them, which is an insurmountable barrier

wahuwa alladhī maraja l-baḥrayni hādhā ʿadhbun furātun wahādhā mil'ḥun ujājun wajaʿala baynahumā barzakhan waḥij'ran maḥjūra

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَ مِنَ ٱلۡمَاۤءِ بَشَرࣰا فَجَعَلَهُۥ نَسَبࣰا وَصِهۡرࣰاۗ وَكَانَ رَبُّكَ قَدِیرࣰا ۝٥٤

And it is He, Who created man from water: then from him He caused two kinds of kindred, by blood and by marriage: your Lord is AI I-Powerful

wahuwa alladhī khalaqa mina l-māi basharan fajaʿalahu nasaban waṣih'ran wakāna rabbuka qadīra

وَیَعۡبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا یَنفَعُهُمۡ وَلَا یَضُرُّهُمۡۗ وَكَانَ ٱلۡكَافِرُ عَلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ ظَهِیرࣰا ۝٥٥

Yet they worship, instead of Allah, those who can neither benefit them nor harm them: more than this, the disbeliever has become a helper of every rebel against his Lord

wayaʿbudūna min dūni l-lahi mā lā yanfaʿuhum walā yaḍurruhum wakāna l-kāfiru ʿalā rabbihi ẓahīra

وَمَاۤ أَرۡسَلۡنَـٰكَ إِلَّا مُبَشِّرࣰا وَنَذِیرࣰا ۝٥٦

O Muhammad, We have sent you only to proclaim good tidings and to give warning

wamā arsalnāka illā mubashiran wanadhīra

قُلۡ مَاۤ أَسۡءَلُكُمۡ عَلَیۡهِ مِنۡ أَجۡرٍ إِلَّا مَن شَاۤءَ أَن یَتَّخِذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ سَبِیلࣰا ۝٥٧

Tell them, "I do not ask of you any recompense for this work: I only ask of the one, who will, to adopt the way of his Lord

qul mā asalukum ʿalayhi min ajrin illā man shāa an yattakhidha ilā rabbihi sabīla

وَتَوَكَّلۡ عَلَى ٱلۡحَیِّ ٱلَّذِی لَا یَمُوتُ وَسَبِّحۡ بِحَمۡدِهِۦۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِهِۦ بِذُنُوبِ عِبَادِهِۦ خَبِیرًا ۝٥٨

O Muhammad trust in that Allah Who is Ever-Living and will never die´ Glorify Him with His praise, for He alone is sufficient to be aware of the sins of His servants

watawakkal ʿalā l-ḥayi alladhī lā yamūtu wasabbiḥ biḥamdihi wakafā bihi bidhunūbi ʿibādihi khabīra

ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَا فِی سِتَّةِ أَیَّامࣲ ثُمَّ ٱسۡتَوَىٰ عَلَى ٱلۡعَرۡشِۖ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنُ فَسۡءَلۡ بِهِۦ خَبِیرࣰا ۝٥٩

In six days He created the earth and the heavens and all that is between them; then He established Himself on the "Throne" (of the Kingdom of the uriverse). (He is) the Merciful: as to His Glory, ask the one who knows

alladhī khalaqa l-samāwāti wal-arḍa wamā baynahumā fī sittati ayyāmin thumma is'tawā ʿalā l-ʿarshi l-raḥmānu fasal bihi khabīra

وَإِذَا قِیلَ لَهُمُ ٱ̅سۡ̅جُ̅دُ̅و̅ا۟̅ لِلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ قَالُوا۟ وَمَا ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنُ أَنَسۡجُدُ لِمَا تَأۡمُرُنَا وَزَادَهُمۡ نُفُورࣰا ۝٦٠ ۩

When it is said to them. "Prostrate yourselves before the Merciful," they retort, "What is the Merciful? Would you have us prostrate ourselves before whomsoever you will?" And this invitation only helps to increase their hatred all the more

wa-idhā qīla lahumu us'judū lilrraḥmāni qālū wamā l-raḥmānu anasjudu limā tamurunā wazādahum nufūra

6 The Transformation wrought

تَبَارَكَ ٱلَّذِی جَعَلَ فِی ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ بُرُوجࣰا وَجَعَلَ فِیهَا سِرَ ٰجࣰا وَقَمَرࣰا مُّنِیرࣰا ۝٦١

Highly blessed is He, Who has made fortified spheres in the heavens and has set in it a "lamp" and a shining moon

tabāraka alladhī jaʿala fī l-samāi burūjan wajaʿala fīhā sirājan waqamaran munīra

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِی جَعَلَ ٱلَّیۡلَ وَٱلنَّهَارَ خِلۡفَةࣰ لِّمَنۡ أَرَادَ أَن یَذَّكَّرَ أَوۡ أَرَادَ شُكُورࣰا ۝٦٢

He it is Who caused the night and the day to succeed each other so that everyone who desires may learn a lesson or become grateful

wahuwa alladhī jaʿala al-layla wal-nahāra khil'fatan liman arāda an yadhakkara aw arāda shukūra

وَعِبَادُ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلَّذِینَ یَمۡشُونَ عَلَى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ هَوۡنࣰا وَإِذَا خَاطَبَهُمُ ٱلۡجَـٰهِلُونَ قَالُوا۟ سَلَـٰمࣰا ۝٦٣

The (true) servants of the Merciful are those who walk humbly on the earth who, when the ignorant people behave insolently towards them, say,"Peace to you"

waʿibādu l-raḥmāni alladhīna yamshūna ʿalā l-arḍi hawnan wa-idhā khāṭabahumu l-jāhilūna qālū salāma

وَٱلَّذِینَ یَبِیتُونَ لِرَبِّهِمۡ سُجَّدࣰا وَقِیَـٰمࣰا ۝٦٤

who pass their nights in prostrating themselves and standing before their Lord

wa-alladhīna yabītūna lirabbihim sujjadan waqiyāma

وَٱلَّذِینَ یَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا ٱصۡرِفۡ عَنَّا عَذَابَ جَهَنَّمَۖ إِنَّ عَذَابَهَا كَانَ غَرَامًا ۝٦٥

who pray, "Our Lord, save us from the torment of Hell, for its torment is killing

wa-alladhīna yaqūlūna rabbanā iṣ'rif ʿannā ʿadhāba jahannama inna ʿadhābahā kāna gharāma

إِنَّهَا سَاۤءَتۡ مُسۡتَقَرࣰّا وَمُقَامࣰا ۝٦٦

it is an evil abode and an evil resting place"

innahā sāat mus'taqarran wamuqāma

وَٱلَّذِینَ إِذَاۤ أَنفَقُوا۟ لَمۡ یُسۡرِفُوا۟ وَلَمۡ یَقۡتُرُوا۟ وَكَانَ بَیۡنَ ذَ ٰلِكَ قَوَامࣰا ۝٦٧

who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor miserly but keep the golden mean between the two (extremes)

wa-alladhīna idhā anfaqū lam yus'rifū walam yaqturū wakāna bayna dhālika qawāma

وَٱلَّذِینَ لَا یَدۡعُونَ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ وَلَا یَقۡتُلُونَ ٱلنَّفۡسَ ٱلَّتِی حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ إِلَّا بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَلَا یَزۡنُونَۚ وَمَن یَفۡعَلۡ ذَ ٰلِكَ یَلۡقَ أَثَامࣰا ۝٦٨

who do not invoke any god but Allah nor kill a soul, which Allah has forbidden, unjustly, nor commit adultery. -He who does this shall be punished for his sin

wa-alladhīna lā yadʿūna maʿa l-lahi ilāhan ākhara walā yaqtulūna l-nafsa allatī ḥarrama l-lahu illā bil-ḥaqi walā yaznūna waman yafʿal dhālika yalqa athāma

یُضَـٰعَفۡ لَهُ ٱلۡعَذَابُ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ وَیَخۡلُدۡ فِیهِۦ مُهَانًا ۝٦٩

and his torment shall be doubled on the Day of Resurrection, and he shall abide in a state of ignominy

yuḍāʿaf lahu l-ʿadhābu yawma l-qiyāmati wayakhlud fīhi muhāna

إِلَّا مَن تَابَ وَءَامَنَ وَعَمِلَ عَمَلࣰا صَـٰلِحࣰا فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ یُبَدِّلُ ٱللَّهُ سَیِّءَاتِهِمۡ حَسَنَـٰتࣲۗ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ غَفُورࣰا رَّحِیمࣰا ۝٧٠

except the one who may have repented (after those sins) and have believed and done righteous works, for then Allah will change his evil deeds into good deeds, and He is very Forgiving and Merciful

illā man tāba waāmana waʿamila ʿamalan ṣāliḥan fa-ulāika yubaddilu l-lahu sayyiātihim ḥasanātin wakāna l-lahu ghafūran raḥīma

وَمَن تَابَ وَعَمِلَ صَـٰلِحࣰا فَإِنَّهُۥ یَتُوبُ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ مَتَابࣰا ۝٧١

In fact, the one who repents and does righteous deeds, returns to Allah as one ightly should.

waman tāba waʿamila ṣāliḥan fa-innahu yatūbu ilā l-lahi matāba

وَٱلَّذِینَ لَا یَشۡهَدُونَ ٱلزُّورَ وَإِذَا مَرُّوا۟ بِٱللَّغۡوِ مَرُّوا۟ كِرَامࣰا ۝٧٢

(And the servants of the Merciful are those:) who do not bear witness to falsehood and who; if they have ever to pass by what is vain, pass by like dignified people

wa-alladhīna lā yashhadūna l-zūra wa-idhā marrū bil-laghwi marrū kirāma

وَٱلَّذِینَ إِذَا ذُكِّرُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِ رَبِّهِمۡ لَمۡ یَخِرُّوا۟ عَلَیۡهَا صُمࣰّا وَعُمۡیَانࣰا ۝٧٣

who do not behave like the blind and the deaf, when the Revelations of their Lord are recited to them for admonition

wa-alladhīna idhā dhukkirū biāyāti rabbihim lam yakhirrū ʿalayhā ṣumman waʿum'yāna

وَٱلَّذِینَ یَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا هَبۡ لَنَا مِنۡ أَزۡوَ ٰجِنَا وَذُرِّیَّـٰتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعۡیُنࣲ وَٱجۡعَلۡنَا لِلۡمُتَّقِینَ إِمَامًا ۝٧٤

who pray, "Our Lord, bless us with wives and children, who may be the comfort of our eyes, and make us leaders of the righteous. "

wa-alladhīna yaqūlūna rabbanā hab lanā min azwājinā wadhurriyyātinā qurrata aʿyunin wa-ij'ʿalnā lil'muttaqīna imāma

أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ یُجۡزَوۡنَ ٱلۡغُرۡفَةَ بِمَا صَبَرُوا۟ وَیُلَقَّوۡنَ فِیهَا تَحِیَّةࣰ وَسَلَـٰمًا ۝٧٥

Such are the people who will be rewarded with high palaces for their fortitude,, wherein they will be welcomed with due respect, honour and salutation

ulāika yuj'zawna l-ghur'fata bimā ṣabarū wayulaqqawna fīhā taḥiyyatan wasalāma

خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَاۚ حَسُنَتۡ مُسۡتَقَرࣰّا وَمُقَامࣰا ۝٧٦

and wherein they will live for ever: what an excellent abode and what an excellent resting place

khālidīna fīhā ḥasunat mus'taqarran wamuqāma

قُلۡ مَا یَعۡبَؤُا۟ بِكُمۡ رَبِّی لَوۡلَا دُعَاۤؤُكُمۡۖ فَقَدۡ كَذَّبۡتُمۡ فَسَوۡفَ یَكُونُ لِزَامَۢا ۝٧٧

O Muhammad, tell the people, "MyLord does not care at all if you do not invoke Him. Now that you have denied (His Revelation), you will soon be awarded such a punishment which you will never be able to avoid."

qul mā yaʿba-u bikum rabbī lawlā duʿāukum faqad kadhabtum fasawfa yakūnu lizāma
