1 Friendly Relations with Enemies

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَتَّخِذُوا۟ عَدُوِّی وَعَدُوَّكُمۡ أَوۡلِیَاۤءَ تُلۡقُونَ إِلَیۡهِم بِٱلۡمَوَدَّةِ وَقَدۡ كَفَرُوا۟ بِمَا جَاۤءَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡحَقِّ یُخۡرِجُونَ ٱلرَّسُولَ وَإِیَّاكُمۡ أَن تُؤۡمِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ رَبِّكُمۡ إِن كُنتُمۡ خَرَجۡتُمۡ جِهَـٰدࣰا فِی سَبِیلِی وَٱبۡتِغَاۤءَ مَرۡضَاتِیۚ تُسِرُّونَ إِلَیۡهِم بِٱلۡمَوَدَّةِ وَأَنَا۠ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَاۤ أَخۡفَیۡتُمۡ وَمَاۤ أَعۡلَنتُمۡۚ وَمَن یَفۡعَلۡهُ مِنكُمۡ فَقَدۡ ضَلَّ سَوَاۤءَ ٱلسَّبِیلِ ۝١

O you who have attained faith, do not take My enemies and your enemies as guardians, extending love towards them when they have denied what has come to you of the truth, evicting the Messenger and yourselves because you believe in Allah, your Lord—if you have set out to strive in My way and to seek My pleasure. How can you secretly express love towards them while I know better what you have hidden and what you have made public? And whoever of you does that has certainly strayed from the right way.

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū lā tattakhidhū ʿaduwwī waʿaduwwakum awliyāa tul'qūna ilayhim bil-mawadati waqad kafarū bimā jāakum mina l-ḥaqi yukh'rijūna l-rasūla wa-iyyākum an tu'minū bil-lahi rabbikum in kuntum kharajtum jihādan fī sabīlī wa-ib'tighāa marḍātī tusirrūna ilayhim bil-mawadati wa-anā aʿlamu bimā akhfaytum wamā aʿlantum waman yafʿalhu minkum faqad ḍalla sawāa l-sabīl

إِن یَثۡقَفُوكُمۡ یَكُونُوا۟ لَكُمۡ أَعۡدَاۤءࣰ وَیَبۡسُطُوۤا۟ إِلَیۡكُمۡ أَیۡدِیَهُمۡ وَأَلۡسِنَتَهُم بِٱلسُّوۤءِ وَوَدُّوا۟ لَوۡ تَكۡفُرُونَ ۝٢

If they encounter youpl, they are enemies to you and they extend their hands and tongues against you with malice, for they would love that you become deniers.

in yathqafūkum yakūnū lakum aʿdāan wayabsuṭū ilaykum aydiyahum wa-alsinatahum bil-sūi wawaddū law takfurūn

لَن تَنفَعَكُمۡ أَرۡحَامُكُمۡ وَلَاۤ أَوۡلَـٰدُكُمۡۚ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ یَفۡصِلُ بَیۡنَكُمۡۚ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ بَصِیرࣱ ۝٣

Neither your relatives nor your children will benefit you; on the Day of Resurrection He will decide between you, for Allah is All-Seeing of what you do.

lan tanfaʿakum arḥāmukum walā awlādukum yawma l-qiyāmati yafṣilu baynakum wal-lahu bimā taʿmalūna baṣīru

قَدۡ كَانَتۡ لَكُمۡ أُسۡوَةٌ حَسَنَةࣱ فِیۤ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ وَٱلَّذِینَ مَعَهُۥۤ إِذۡ قَالُوا۟ لِقَوۡمِهِمۡ إِنَّا بُرَءَ ٰۤؤُا۟ مِنكُمۡ وَمِمَّا تَعۡبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ كَفَرۡنَا بِكُمۡ وَبَدَا بَیۡنَنَا وَبَیۡنَكُمُ ٱلۡعَدَ ٰوَةُ وَٱلۡبَغۡضَاۤءُ أَبَدًا حَتَّىٰ تُؤۡمِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَحۡدَهُۥۤ إِلَّا قَوۡلَ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ لِأَبِیهِ لَأَسۡتَغۡفِرَنَّ لَكَ وَمَاۤ أَمۡلِكُ لَكَ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ مِن شَیۡءࣲۖ رَّبَّنَا عَلَیۡكَ تَوَكَّلۡنَا وَإِلَیۡكَ أَنَبۡنَا وَإِلَیۡكَ ٱلۡمَصِیرُ ۝٤

Surely, there has always been an excellent role model for youpl in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people, “We disown you and what you worship apart from Allah. We have disbelieved in you, and enmity and hatred have surfaced between us and you forever until you believe in Allah alone.” Except for the words of Abraham to his father, “I will ask forgiveness for you, though I cannot protect you from Allah.” “Our Lord, in You we have placed our trust, and to You we have turned penitent, for to You is the destiny.

qad kānat lakum us'watun ḥasanatun fī ib'rāhīma wa-alladhīna maʿahu idh qālū liqawmihim innā buraāu minkum wamimmā taʿbudūna min dūni l-lahi kafarnā bikum wabadā baynanā wabaynakumu l-ʿadāwatu wal-baghḍāu abadan ḥattā tu'minū bil-lahi waḥdahu illā qawla ib'rāhīma li-abīhi la-astaghfiranna laka wamā amliku laka mina l-lahi min shayin rabbanā ʿalayka tawakkalnā wa-ilayka anabnā wa-ilayka l-maṣīr

رَبَّنَا لَا تَجۡعَلۡنَا فِتۡنَةࣰ لِّلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَا رَبَّنَاۤۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلۡحَكِیمُ ۝٥

Our Lord, do not make us a means of trial for those who have denied, and forgive us, our Lord; You are indeed the Almighty, the All-Wise.”

rabbanā lā tajʿalnā fit'natan lilladhīna kafarū wa-igh'fir lanā rabbanā innaka anta l-ʿazīzu l-ḥakīm

لَقَدۡ كَانَ لَكُمۡ فِیهِمۡ أُسۡوَةٌ حَسَنَةࣱ لِّمَن كَانَ یَرۡجُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلۡیَوۡمَ ٱلۡءَاخِرَۚ وَمَن یَتَوَلَّ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلۡغَنِیُّ ٱلۡحَمِیدُ ۝٦

Indeed, there has always been an excellent role model in them for youpl (and) for anyone who has been putting hope in Allah and (expecting) the Last Day. But whoever turns away—indeed, Allah is the Self-Sufficient, the Praiseworthy.

laqad kāna lakum fīhim us'watun ḥasanatun liman kāna yarjū l-laha wal-yawma l-ākhira waman yatawalla fa-inna l-laha huwa l-ghaniyu l-ḥamīd

2 Friendly Relations with non-Muslims

۞ عَسَى ٱللَّهُ أَن یَجۡعَلَ بَیۡنَكُمۡ وَبَیۡنَ ٱلَّذِینَ عَادَیۡتُم مِّنۡهُم مَّوَدَّةࣰۚ وَٱللَّهُ قَدِیرࣱۚ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمࣱ ۝٧

Hopefully, Allah will produce love between you and those of them whom you took for enemies, for Allah is All-Powerful, and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Bestowing of mercy.

lā yanhākumu l-lahu ʿani alladhīna lam yuqātilūkum fī l-dīni walam yukh'rijūkum min diyārikum an tabarrūhum watuq'siṭū ilayhim inna l-laha yuḥibbu l-muq'siṭīn

لَّا یَنۡهَىٰكُمُ ٱللَّهُ عَنِ ٱلَّذِینَ لَمۡ یُقَـٰتِلُوكُمۡ فِی ٱلدِّینِ وَلَمۡ یُخۡرِجُوكُم مِّن دِیَـٰرِكُمۡ أَن تَبَرُّوهُمۡ وَتُقۡسِطُوۤا۟ إِلَیۡهِمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یُحِبُّ ٱلۡمُقۡسِطِینَ ۝٨

Allah does not forbid youpl from those who have neither combated you over religion nor evicted you from your homes—that you deal with them very kindly and equitably. Indeed, Allah loves the equitable.

La yanhakumu Allahu AAani allatheena lam yuqatilookum fee alddeeni walam yukhrijookum min diyarikum an tabarroohum watuqsitoo ilayhim inna Allaha yuhibbu almuqsiteena

إِنَّمَا یَنۡهَىٰكُمُ ٱللَّهُ عَنِ ٱلَّذِینَ قَـٰتَلُوكُمۡ فِی ٱلدِّینِ وَأَخۡرَجُوكُم مِّن دِیَـٰرِكُمۡ وَظَـٰهَرُوا۟ عَلَىٰۤ إِخۡرَاجِكُمۡ أَن تَوَلَّوۡهُمۡۚ وَمَن یَتَوَلَّهُمۡ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ ۝٩

Rather, Allah forbids youpl from those who combated you over religion and evicted you from your homes and backed up (your enemies) in your eviction. And whoever takes them as guardians—those are the unjust.

innamā yanhākumu l-lahu ʿani alladhīna qātalūkum fī l-dīni wa-akhrajūkum min diyārikum waẓāharū ʿalā ikh'rājikum an tawallawhum waman yatawallahum fa-ulāika humu l-ẓālimūn

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِذَا جَاۤءَكُمُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنَـٰتُ مُهَـٰجِرَ ٰتࣲ فَٱمۡتَحِنُوهُنَّۖ ٱللَّهُ أَعۡلَمُ بِإِیمَـٰنِهِنَّۖ فَإِنۡ عَلِمۡتُمُوهُنَّ مُؤۡمِنَـٰتࣲ فَلَا تَرۡجِعُوهُنَّ إِلَى ٱلۡكُفَّارِۖ لَا هُنَّ حِلࣱّ لَّهُمۡ وَلَا هُمۡ یَحِلُّونَ لَهُنَّۖ وَءَاتُوهُم مَّاۤ أَنفَقُوا۟ۚ وَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَیۡكُمۡ أَن تَنكِحُوهُنَّ إِذَاۤ ءَاتَیۡتُمُوهُنَّ أُجُورَهُنَّۚ وَلَا تُمۡسِكُوا۟ بِعِصَمِ ٱلۡكَوَافِرِ وَسۡءَلُوا۟ مَاۤ أَنفَقۡتُمۡ وَلۡیَسۡءَلُوا۟ مَاۤ أَنفَقُوا۟ۚ ذَ ٰلِكُمۡ حُكۡمُ ٱللَّهِ یَحۡكُمُ بَیۡنَكُمۡۖ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِیمٌ حَكِیمࣱ ۝١٠

O you who have attained faith, when believing women come to you immigrating, test them; Allah knows better about their faith. And if youpl find them to be faithful, do not send them back to the deniers; they are not lawful for them nor are they lawful for them. But give them what they have spent. And no sin is committed by you if you marry them, provided you give them their compensation. And do not hold on to ties with unbelieving women, but demand what you have spent and let them demand what they have spent. This is Allah's judgment—He judges among you, for Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū idhā jāakumu l-mu'minātu muhājirātin fa-im'taḥinūhunna l-lahu aʿlamu biīmānihinna fa-in ʿalim'tumūhunna mu'minātin falā tarjiʿūhunna ilā l-kufāri lā hunna ḥillun lahum walā hum yaḥillūna lahunna waātūhum mā anfaqū walā junāḥa ʿalaykum an tankiḥūhunna idhā ātaytumūhunna ujūrahunna walā tum'sikū biʿiṣami l-kawāfiri wasalū mā anfaqtum walyasalū mā anfaqū dhālikum ḥuk'mu l-lahi yaḥkumu baynakum wal-lahu ʿalīmun ḥakīmu

وَإِن فَاتَكُمۡ شَیۡءࣱ مِّنۡ أَزۡوَ ٰجِكُمۡ إِلَى ٱلۡكُفَّارِ فَعَاقَبۡتُمۡ فَءَاتُوا۟ ٱلَّذِینَ ذَهَبَتۡ أَزۡوَ ٰجُهُم مِّثۡلَ مَاۤ أَنفَقُوا۟ۚ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَنتُم بِهِۦ مُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝١١

And if any of yourpl wives should go over to the deniers and then you punish (them in retaliation), then give those whose wives have gone away the equivalent of what they had spent. And be mindful of Allah in whom you are believers.

wa-in fātakum shayon min azwājikum ilā l-kufāri faʿāqabtum faātū alladhīna dhahabat azwājuhum mith'la mā anfaqū wa-ittaqū l-laha alladhī antum bihi mu'minūn

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلنَّبِیُّ إِذَا جَاۤءَكَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنَـٰتُ یُبَایِعۡنَكَ عَلَىٰۤ أَن لَّا یُشۡرِكۡنَ بِٱللَّهِ شَیۡءࣰا وَلَا یَسۡرِقۡنَ وَلَا یَزۡنِینَ وَلَا یَقۡتُلۡنَ أَوۡلَـٰدَهُنَّ وَلَا یَأۡتِینَ بِبُهۡتَـٰنࣲ یَفۡتَرِینَهُۥ بَیۡنَ أَیۡدِیهِنَّ وَأَرۡجُلِهِنَّ وَلَا یَعۡصِینَكَ فِی مَعۡرُوفࣲ فَبَایِعۡهُنَّ وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرۡ لَهُنَّ ٱللَّهَۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمࣱ ۝١٢

O Prophet, if believing women come to you pledging allegiance to you that they will not associate anything with Allah, nor steal, nor fornicate, nor kill their children, nor commit perjury as to parenthood, nor disobey you in anything righteous—then accept their allegiance and ask Allah’s forgiveness for them; indeed, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Bestowing of mercy.

yāayyuhā l-nabiyu idhā jāaka l-mu'minātu yubāyiʿ'naka ʿalā an lā yush'rik'na bil-lahi shayan walā yasriq'na walā yaznīna walā yaqtul'na awlādahunna walā yatīna bibuh'tānin yaftarīnahu bayna aydīhinna wa-arjulihinna walā yaʿṣīnaka fī maʿrūfin fabāyiʿ'hunna wa-is'taghfir lahunna l-laha inna l-laha ghafūrun raḥīmu

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَتَوَلَّوۡا۟ قَوۡمًا غَضِبَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَیۡهِمۡ قَدۡ یَىِٕسُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ كَمَا یَىِٕسَ ٱلۡكُفَّارُ مِنۡ أَصۡحَـٰبِ ٱلۡقُبُورِ ۝١٣

O you who have attained faith, do not take for guardians people upon whom is Allah’s wrath—they have indeed despaired of the Hereafter as the deniers have despaired of the fellows of the graves.

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū lā tatawallaw qawman ghaḍiba l-lahu ʿalayhim qad ya-isū mina l-ākhirati kamā ya-isa l-kufāru min aṣḥābi l-qubūr
