1 The Bursting Asunder

إِذَا السَّمَاءُ انشَقَّتْ

When the sky is split asunder,

Itha alssamao inshaqqat

وَأَذِنَتْ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتْ

It will listen attentively to its Lord since it is obliged to do so.

Waathinat lirabbiha wahuqqat

وَإِذَا الْأَرْضُ مُدَّتْ

When the earth is stretched out,

Wa-itha al-ardu muddat

وَأَلْقَتْ مَا فِيهَا وَتَخَلَّتْ

It will cast out that which is within it until it becomes empty,

Waalqat ma feeha watakhallat

وَأَذِنَتْ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتْ

Listening attentively to its Lord since it is obliged to do so.

Waathinat lirabbiha wahuqqat

يَا أَيُّهَا الْإِنسَانُ إِنَّكَ كَادِحٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ كَدْحًا فَمُلَاقِيهِ

O’ man, indeed you are striving to your Lord strenuously and so you will meet Him.

Ya ayyuha al-insanu innaka kadihun ila rabbika kadhan famulaqeehi

فَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِيَ كِتَابَهُ بِيَمِينِهِ

Then as for the one who is given his book in his right hand,

Faama man ootiya kitabahu biyameenihi

فَسَوْفَ يُحَاسَبُ حِسَابًا يَسِيرًا

He will be judged with an easy reckoning,

Fasawfa yuhasabu hisaban yaseeran

وَيَنقَلِبُ إِلَىٰ أَهْلِهِ مَسْرُورًا

Returning to his family joyfully.

Wayanqalibu ila ahlihi masrooran

وَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِيَ كِتَابَهُ وَرَاءَ ظَهْرِهِ

But, the one who is given his book behind his back,

Waamma man ootiya kitabahu waraa thahrihi

فَسَوْفَ يَدْعُو ثُبُورًا

He will yearn for (his own) destruction.

Fasawfa yadAAoo thubooran

وَيَصْلَىٰ سَعِيرًا

As he will taste the burning of the blazing Fire.

Wayasla saAAeeran

إِنَّهُ كَانَ فِي أَهْلِهِ مَسْرُورًا

Indeed, he used to live a happy life among his family,

Innahu kana fee ahlihi masrooran

إِنَّهُ ظَنَّ أَن لَّن يَحُورَ

And used to think that he would never return to his Lord.

Innahu thanna an lan yahoora

بَلَىٰ إِنَّ رَبَّهُ كَانَ بِهِ بَصِيرًا

Yes indeed! His Lord has been ever beholding him!.

Bala inna rabbahu kana bihi baseeran

فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِالشَّفَقِ

So I swear by the twilight glow,

Fala oqsimu bialshshafaqi

وَاللَّيْلِ وَمَا وَسَقَ

By the night and all that it assembles in its darkness.

Waallayli wama wasaqa

وَالْقَمَرِ إِذَا اتَّسَقَ

And by the moon when it becomes full,

Waalqamari itha ittasaqa

لَتَرْكَبُنَّ طَبَقًا عَن طَبَقٍ

You will surely embark on a stage after another.

Latarkabunna tabaqan AAan tabaqin

فَمَا لَهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ

Thus, what is the matter with them that they do not accept Faith.

Fama lahum la yu/minoona

وَإِذَا قُرِئَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقُرْآنُ لَا يَسْجُدُونَ

And when the ‘Qurʾān’ is recited to them, they fall not prostrate?

Wa-itha quri-a AAalayhimu alqur-anu la yasjudoona

بَلِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا يُكَذِّبُونَ

Nay! Those who lack Faith to in Allâh persist in denial.

Bali allatheena kafaroo yukaththiboona

وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يُوعُونَ

Allâh knows best whatever they gather in their hearts.

WaAllahu aAAlamu bima yooAAoona

فَبَشِّرْهُم بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ

Thus, inform them of a painful punishment,

Fabashshirhum biAAathabin aleemin

إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ لَهُمْ أَجْرٌ غَيْرُ مَمْنُونٍ

Except for those who adhere firmly to Islamic monotheism, and do righteous acts (in this ‘worldly life’). They will have a never-ending reward.

Illa allatheena amanoo waAAamiloo alssalihati lahum ajrun ghayru mamnoonin
