1 The City

لَا أُقْسِمُ بِهَٰذَا الْبَلَدِ

Nay, I present this very Town as witness

La oqsimu bihatha albaladi

وَأَنتَ حِلٌّ بِهَٰذَا الْبَلَدِ

The Town where (O Prophet) you have lived

Waanta hillun bihatha albaladi

وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ

And where your ancestors have multiplied. (A Sanctuary for peace for everyone)

Wawalidin wama walada

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنسَانَ فِي كَبَدٍ

Verily, We have created the human being for hard work. (This is the Town where Abraham and Ishmael labored, and where you began your toil to raise the Name of your Lord (2:125-127))

Laqad khalaqna al-insana fee kabadin

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ

Does he think that none has Power over him

Ayahsabu an lan yaqdira AAalayhi ahadun

يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًا

He keeps boasting, "I have wasted so much wealth!"

Yaqoolu ahlaktu malan lubadan

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُ أَحَدٌ

What! Does he think that no one sees him? (How much and where he spent it)

Ayahsabu an lam yarahu ahadun

أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُ عَيْنَيْنِ

Did We not give him two eyes? ('Ainain' = Two physical eyes = Physical vision and vision of the heart = Sight and insight)

Alam najAAal lahu AAaynayni

وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ

And a tongue and a pair of lips

Walisanan washafatayni

وَهَدَيْنَاهُ النَّجْدَيْنِ

And shown him the two highways? (Of virtue and vice)

Wahadaynahu alnnajdayni

فَلَا اقْتَحَمَ الْعَقَبَةَ

But he hardly tries the uphill road, the Ascent

Fala iqtahama alAAaqabata

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْعَقَبَةُ

Ah, what will convey unto you what that Ascent is

Wama adraka ma alAAaqabatu

فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ

- Freeing others from bondage, physical or mental, and from any social, economic or political oppression. (Freeing the neck includes all the above meanings plus striving to establish the Divine System wherein the only Master is Allah's Law)

Fakku raqabatin

أَوْ إِطْعَامٌ فِي يَوْمٍ ذِي مَسْغَبَةٍ

- And to feed in times of hunger, famine, wars and natural disasters

Aw itAAamun fee yawmin thee masghabatin

يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ

- And to take special care of those who despite being a part of the community feel left out. ('Za maqrabah' = Near one = Relative = Part of the community)

Yateeman tha maqrabatin

أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ

- And helping him who remains needy though he toils in dust

Aw miskeenan tha matrabatin

ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْمَرْحَمَةِ

- And to be of those who have chosen to be graced with belief, and become living reminders of perseverance and living reminders of compassion

Thumma kana mina allatheena amanoo watawasaw bialssabri watawasaw bialmarhamati

أُولَٰئِكَ أَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ

Such are the ones hand in hand with Bliss

Ola-ika as-habu almaymanati

وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِآيَاتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ

And those who deny Our Messages, such are the ones hand in hand with despondence

Waallatheena kafaroo bi-ayatina hum as-habu almash-amati

عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُّؤْصَدَةٌ

With Fire all around them

AAalayhim narun mu/sadatun
