1 The Shaking

إِذَا زُلْزِلَتِ الْأَرْضُ زِلْزَالَهَا

When the earth, quakes, convulses and is violently shaken

Itha zulzilati al-ardu zilzalaha

وَأَخْرَجَتِ الْأَرْضُ أَثْقَالَهَا

And when it casts its burdensome contents of metals, corpses, bones and all that had been burned within

Waakhrajati al-ardu athqalaha

وَقَالَ الْإِنسَانُ مَا لَهَا

And mankind be struck with surprise and astonishment and emotionally vent an exclamation "What happened" they say, "to make the earth unstable and agitated?"

Waqala al-insanu ma laha

يَوْمَئِذٍ تُحَدِّثُ أَخْبَارَهَا

There and then will the earth tell her story, exposing everyone by his insignia, that of immorality and another of glory and another indicating reprimand

Yawma-ithin tuhaddithu akhbaraha

بِأَنَّ رَبَّكَ أَوْحَىٰ لَهَا

Featuring her obedience to Allah’s inspired command

Bi-anna rabbaka awha laha

يَوْمَئِذٍ يَصْدُرُ النَّاسُ أَشْتَاتًا لِّيُرَوْا أَعْمَالَهُمْ

There and then will people go forth assorted in groups of like attributes to be requited with what is commensurate with their deeds

Yawma-ithin yasduru alnnasu ashtatan liyuraw aAAmalahum

فَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيْرًا يَرَهُ

Then he who has done an atom’s weight of good, will see it and profit by it

Faman yaAAmal mithqala tharratin khayran yarahu

وَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ شَرًّا يَرَهُ

And he who has done an atom’s weight of evil, will see it and be punished for it

Waman yaAAmal mithqala tharratin sharran yarahu
