فَأَهۡلَكۡنَاۤ أَشَدَّ مِنۡهُم بَطۡشࣰا وَمَضَىٰ مَثَلُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ ٨
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International):
And We destroyed greater than them in [striking] power, and the example of the former peoples has preceded
Abdel Haleem:
so We have destroyed mightier people than [the disbelievers of Mecca] and their example has gone down in history
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall:
Then We destroyed men mightier than these in prowess; and the example of the men of old hath gone (before them)
یَوۡمَ نَبۡطِشُ ٱلۡبَطۡشَةَ ٱلۡكُبۡرَىٰۤ إِنَّا مُنتَقِمُونَ ١٦
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International):
The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution
Abdel Haleem:
and on the Day We seize [them] mightily We shall exact retribution
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall:
On the day when We shall seize them with the greater seizure, (then) in truth We shall punish
The Letter Qaf 50:36
Noun
وَكَمۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَا قَبۡلَهُم مِّن قَرۡنٍ هُمۡ أَشَدُّ مِنۡهُم بَطۡشࣰا فَنَقَّبُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡبِلَـٰدِ هَلۡ مِن مَّحِیصٍ ٣٦
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International):
And how many a generation before them did We destroy who were greater than them in [striking] power and had explored throughout the lands. Is there any place of escape
Abdel Haleem:
We have destroyed even mightier generations before these disbelievers, who travelled through [many] lands- was there any escape
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall:
And how many a generation We destroyed before them, who were mightier than these in prowess so that they overran the lands! Had they any place of refuge (when the judgment came)
The Moon 54:36
Noun
وَلَقَدۡ أَنذَرَهُم بَطۡشَتَنَا فَتَمَارَوۡا۟ بِٱلنُّذُرِ ٣٦
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International):
And he had already warned them of Our assault, but they disputed the warning
Abdel Haleem:
He warned them of Our onslaught, but they dismissed the warning
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall:
And he indeed had warned them of Our blow, but they did doubt the warnings
إِنَّ بَطْشَ رَبِّكَ لَشَدِيدٌ
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International):
Indeed, the vengeance of your Lord is severe

[Prophet], your Lord’s punishment is truly stern––

وَإِذَا بَطَشۡتُم بَطَشۡتُمۡ جَبَّارِینَ ١٣٠
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International):
And when you strike, you strike as tyrants
Abdel Haleem:
Why do you act like tyrants whenever you attack someone
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall:
And if ye seize by force, seize ye as tyrants
فَلَمَّاۤ أَنۡ أَرَادَ أَن یَبۡطِشَ بِٱلَّذِی هُوَ عَدُوࣱّ لَّهُمَا قَالَ یَـٰمُوسَىٰۤ أَتُرِیدُ أَن تَقۡتُلَنِی كَمَا قَتَلۡتَ نَفۡسَۢا بِٱلۡأَمۡسِۖ إِن تُرِیدُ إِلَّاۤ أَن تَكُونَ جَبَّارࣰا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا تُرِیدُ أَن تَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُصۡلِحِینَ ١٩
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International):
And when he wanted to strike the one who was an enemy to both of them, he said, "O Moses, do you intend to kill me as you killed someone yesterday? You only want to be a tyrant in the land and do not want to be of the amenders."
Abdel Haleem:
As he was about to attack the man who was an enemy to both of them, the man said, ‘Moses, are you going to kill me as you killed that person yesterday? You clearly want to be a tyrant in the land; you do not intend to put things right.’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall:
And when he would have fallen upon the man who was an enemy unto them both, he said: O Moses! Wouldst thou kill me as thou didst kill a person yesterday. Thou wouldst be nothing but a tyrant in the land, thou wouldst not be of the reformers
یَوۡمَ نَبۡطِشُ ٱلۡبَطۡشَةَ ٱلۡكُبۡرَىٰۤ إِنَّا مُنتَقِمُونَ ١٦

أَلَهُمۡ أَرۡجُلࣱ یَمۡشُونَ بِهَاۤۖ أَمۡ لَهُمۡ أَیۡدࣲ یَبۡطِشُونَ بِهَاۤۖ أَمۡ لَهُمۡ أَعۡیُنࣱ یُبۡصِرُونَ بِهَاۤۖ أَمۡ لَهُمۡ ءَاذَانࣱ یَسۡمَعُونَ بِهَاۗ قُلِ ٱدۡعُوا۟ شُرَكَاۤءَكُمۡ ثُمَّ كِیدُونِ فَلَا تُنظِرُونِ ١٩٥
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International):
Do they have feet by which they walk? Or do they have hands by which they strike? Or do they have eyes by which they see? Or do they have ears by which they hear? Say, [O Muhammad], "Call your 'partners' and then conspire against me and give me no respite
Abdel Haleem:
Do they have feet to walk, hands to strike, eyes to see, or ears to hear? Say [Prophet], ‘Call on your “partners”! Scheme against me! Do not spare me
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall:
Have they feet wherewith they walk, or have they hands wherewith they hold, or have they eyes wherewith they see, or have they ears wherewith they hear? Say: Call upon your (so-called) partners (of Allah), and then contrive against me, spare me not
