Joseph 12:63
Verb
فَلَمَّا رَجَعُوۤا۟ إِلَىٰۤ أَبِیهِمۡ قَالُوا۟ یَـٰۤأَبَانَا مُنِعَ مِنَّا ٱلۡكَیۡلُ فَأَرۡسِلۡ مَعَنَاۤ أَخَانَا نَكۡتَلۡ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَـٰفِظُونَ ٦٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International):
So when they returned to their father, they said, "O our father, [further] measure has been denied to us, so send with us our brother [that] we will be given measure. And indeed, we will be his guardians."
Abdel Haleem:
When they returned to their father, they said, ‘Father, we have been denied any more corn, but send our brother back with us and we shall be given another measure. We shall guard him carefully.’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall:
So when they went back to their father they said: O our father! The measure is denied us, so send with us our brother that we may obtain the measure, surely we will guard him well
وَمَا مَنَعَنَاۤ أَن نُّرۡسِلَ بِٱلۡءَایَـٰتِ إِلَّاۤ أَن كَذَّبَ بِهَا ٱلۡأَوَّلُونَۚ وَءَاتَیۡنَا ثَمُودَ ٱلنَّاقَةَ مُبۡصِرَةࣰ فَظَلَمُوا۟ بِهَاۚ وَمَا نُرۡسِلُ بِٱلۡءَایَـٰتِ إِلَّا تَخۡوِیفࣰا ٥٩
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International):
And nothing has prevented Us from sending signs except that the former peoples denied them. And We gave Thamud the she-camel as a visible sign, but they wronged her. And We send not the signs except as a warning
Abdel Haleem:
Nothing prevents Us from sending miraculous signs, except the fact that previous peoples denied them. We gave the people of Thamud the she-camel as a clear sign, yet they maltreated it. We send signs only to give warning
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall:
Naught hindereth Us from sending portents save that the folk of old denied them. And We gave Thamud the she-camel - a clear portent save to warn
وَمَا مَنَعَ ٱلنَّاسَ أَن یُؤۡمِنُوۤا۟ إِذۡ جَاۤءَهُمُ ٱلۡهُدَىٰۤ إِلَّاۤ أَن قَالُوۤا۟ أَبَعَثَ ٱللَّهُ بَشَرࣰا رَّسُولࣰا ٩٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International):
And what prevented the people from believing when guidance came to them except that they said, "Has Allah sent a human messenger?"
Abdel Haleem:
The only thing that kept these people from believing, when guidance came to them, was that they said, ‘How could God have sent a human being as a messenger?’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall:
And naught prevented mankind from believing when the guidance came unto them save that they said: Hath Allah sent a mortal as (His) messenger
The Cave 18:55
Verb
وَمَا مَنَعَ ٱلنَّاسَ أَن یُؤۡمِنُوۤا۟ إِذۡ جَاۤءَهُمُ ٱلۡهُدَىٰ وَیَسۡتَغۡفِرُوا۟ رَبَّهُمۡ إِلَّاۤ أَن تَأۡتِیَهُمۡ سُنَّةُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِینَ أَوۡ یَأۡتِیَهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُ قُبُلࣰا ٥٥
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International):
And nothing has prevented the people from believing when guidance came to them and from asking forgiveness of their Lord except that there [must] befall them the [accustomed] precedent of the former peoples or that the punishment should come [directly] before them
Abdel Haleem:
Now that guidance has come to them, what stops these people believing and asking forgiveness from their Lord before the fate of earlier peoples annihilates them or their torment confronts them
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall:
And naught hindereth mankind from believing when the guidance cometh unto them, and from asking forgiveness of their Lord unless (it be that they wish) that the judgment of the men of old should come upon them or (that) they should be confronted with the Doom
Ta Ha 20:92
Verb
قَالَ یَـٰهَـٰرُونُ مَا مَنَعَكَ إِذۡ رَأَیۡتَهُمۡ ضَلُّوۤا۟ ٩٢
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International):
[Moses] said, "O Aaron, what prevented you, when you saw them going astray
Abdel Haleem:
Moses said, ‘When you realized they had gone astray, what prevented you, Aaron
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall:
He (Moses) said: O Aaron! What held thee back when thou didst see them gone astray
The Prophets 21:43
Verb
أَمۡ لَهُمۡ ءَالِهَةࣱ تَمۡنَعُهُم مِّن دُونِنَاۚ لَا یَسۡتَطِیعُونَ نَصۡرَ أَنفُسِهِمۡ وَلَا هُم مِّنَّا یُصۡحَبُونَ ٤٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International):
Or do they have gods to defend them other than Us? They are unable [even] to help themselves, nor can they be protected from Us
Abdel Haleem:
Do they have gods who can defend them against Us? Their gods have no power to help themselves, nor can they be protected from Us
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall:
Or have they gods who can shield them from Us? They cannot help themselves nor can they be defended from Us
The Cow 2:114
Verb
وَمَنۡ أَظۡلَمُ مِمَّن مَّنَعَ مَسَـٰجِدَ ٱللَّهِ أَن یُذۡكَرَ فِیهَا ٱسۡمُهُۥ وَسَعَىٰ فِی خَرَابِهَاۤۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ مَا كَانَ لَهُمۡ أَن یَدۡخُلُوهَاۤ إِلَّا خَاۤىِٕفِینَۚ لَهُمۡ فِی ٱلدُّنۡیَا خِزۡیࣱ وَلَهُمۡ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ عَذَابٌ عَظِیمࣱ ١١٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International):
And who are more unjust than those who prevent the name of Allah from being mentioned in His mosques and strive toward their destruction. It is not for them to enter them except in fear. For them in this world is disgrace, and they will have in the Hereafter a great punishment
Abdel Haleem:
Who could be more wicked than those who prohibit the mention of God’s name in His places of worship and strive to have them deserted? Such people should not enter them without fear: there is disgrace for them in this world and painful punishment in the Hereafter
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall:
And who doth greater wrong than he who forbiddeth the approach to the sanctuaries of Allah lest His name should be mentioned therein, and striveth for their ruin. As for such, it was never meant that they should enter them except in fear. Theirs in the world is ignominy and theirs in the Hereafter is an awful doom
The Letter Sad 38:75
Verb
قَالَ یَـٰۤإِبۡلِیسُ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَن تَسۡجُدَ لِمَا خَلَقۡتُ بِیَدَیَّۖ أَسۡتَكۡبَرۡتَ أَمۡ كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلۡعَالِینَ ٧٥
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International):
[ Allah ] said, "O Iblees, what prevented you from prostrating to that which I created with My hands? Were you arrogant [then], or were you [already] among the haughty?"
Abdel Haleem:
God said, ‘Iblis, what prevents you from bowing down to the man I have made with My own hands? Are you too high and mighty?’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall:
He said: O Iblis! What hindereth thee from falling prostrate before that which I have created with both My hands? Art thou too proud or art thou of the high exalted
Women 4:141
Verb
ٱلَّذِینَ یَتَرَبَّصُونَ بِكُمۡ فَإِن كَانَ لَكُمۡ فَتۡحࣱ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ قَالُوۤا۟ أَلَمۡ نَكُن مَّعَكُمۡ وَإِن كَانَ لِلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ نَصِیبࣱ قَالُوۤا۟ أَلَمۡ نَسۡتَحۡوِذۡ عَلَیۡكُمۡ وَنَمۡنَعۡكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَۚ فَٱللَّهُ یَحۡكُمُ بَیۡنَكُمۡ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِۗ وَلَن یَجۡعَلَ ٱللَّهُ لِلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ عَلَى ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ سَبِیلًا ١٤١
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International):
Those who wait [and watch] you. Then if you gain a victory from Allah , they say, "Were we not with you?" But if the disbelievers have a success, they say [to them], "Did we not gain the advantage over you, but we protected you from the believers?" Allah will judge between [all of] you on the Day of Resurrection, and never will Allah give the disbelievers over the believers a way [to overcome them]
Abdel Haleem:
The [hypocrites] wait to see what happens to you and, if God brings you success, they say, ‘Were we not on your side?’ but if the disbelievers have some success, they say to them, ‘Did we not have the upper hand over you, and [yet] protect you from the believers?’ God will judge between you all on the Day of Resurrection, and He will give the disbelievers no means of overcoming the believers
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall:
Those who wait upon occasion in regard to you and, if a victory cometh unto you from Allah, say: Are we not with you? and if the disbelievers meet with a success say: Had we not the mastery of you, and did we not protect you from the believers? - Allah will judge between you at the Day of Resurrection, and Allah will not give the disbelievers any way (of success) against the believers
قَالَ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَلَّا تَسۡجُدَ إِذۡ أَمَرۡتُكَۖ قَالَ أَنَا۠ خَیۡرࣱ مِّنۡهُ خَلَقۡتَنِی مِن نَّارࣲ وَخَلَقۡتَهُۥ مِن طِینࣲ ١٢
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International):
[ Allah ] said, "What prevented you from prostrating when I commanded you?" [Satan] said, "I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay."
Abdel Haleem:
God said, ‘What prevented you from bowing down as I commanded you?’ and he said, ‘I am better than him: You created me from fire and him from clay.’
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall:
He said: What hindered thee that thou didst not fall prostrate when I bade thee? (Iblis) said: I am better than him. Thou createdst me of fire while him Thou didst create of mud
Repentance 9:54
Verb
وَمَا مَنَعَهُمۡ أَن تُقۡبَلَ مِنۡهُمۡ نَفَقَـٰتُهُمۡ إِلَّاۤ أَنَّهُمۡ كَفَرُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَبِرَسُولِهِۦ وَلَا یَأۡتُونَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ إِلَّا وَهُمۡ كُسَالَىٰ وَلَا یُنفِقُونَ إِلَّا وَهُمۡ كَـٰرِهُونَ ٥٤
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International):
And what prevents their expenditures from being accepted from them but that they have disbelieved in Allah and in His Messenger and that they come not to prayer except while they are lazy and that they do not spend except while they are unwilling
Abdel Haleem:
The only thing that prevents what they give from being accepted is the fact that they defy God and His Messenger, perform the prayer only lazily, and give only grudgingly
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall:
And naught preventeth that their contributions should be accepted from them save that they have disbelieved in Allah and in His messenger, and they come not to worship save as idlers, and pay not (their contribution) save reluctantly

Noun
مَّنَّاعࣲ لِّلۡخَیۡرِ مُعۡتَدࣲ مُّرِیبٍ ٢٥
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International):
Preventer of good, aggressor, and doubter
Abdel Haleem:
everyone who hindered good, was aggressive, caused others to doubt
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall:
Hinderer of good, transgressor, doubter
لَّا مَقۡطُوعَةࣲ وَلَا مَمۡنُوعَةࣲ ٣٣
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International):
Neither limited [to season] nor forbidden
Abdel Haleem:
unfailing, unforbidden
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall:
Neither out of reach nor yet forbidden
هُوَ ٱلَّذِیۤ أَخۡرَجَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِنۡ أَهۡلِ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ مِن دِیَـٰرِهِمۡ لِأَوَّلِ ٱلۡحَشۡرِۚ مَا ظَنَنتُمۡ أَن یَخۡرُجُوا۟ۖ وَظَنُّوۤا۟ أَنَّهُم مَّانِعَتُهُمۡ حُصُونُهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ فَأَتَىٰهُمُ ٱللَّهُ مِنۡ حَیۡثُ لَمۡ یَحۡتَسِبُوا۟ۖ وَقَذَفَ فِی قُلُوبِهِمُ ٱلرُّعۡبَۚ یُخۡرِبُونَ بُیُوتَهُم بِأَیۡدِیهِمۡ وَأَیۡدِی ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ فَٱعۡتَبِرُوا۟ یَـٰۤأُو۟لِی ٱلۡأَبۡصَـٰرِ ٢
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International):
It is He who expelled the ones who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture from their homes at the first gathering. You did not think they would leave, and they thought that their fortresses would protect them from Allah ; but [the decree of] Allah came upon them from where they had not expected, and He cast terror into their hearts [so] they destroyed their houses by their [own] hands and the hands of the believers. So take warning, O people of vision
Abdel Haleem:
It was He who drove those of the People of the Book who broke faith out from their homes at the first gathering of forces––you [believers] never thought they would go, and they themselves thought their fortifications would protect them against God. God came up on them from where they least expected and put panic into their hearts: their homes were destroyed by their own hands, and the hands of the believers. Learn from this, all of you with insight
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall:
He it is Who hath caused those of the People of the Scripture who disbelieved to go forth from their homes unto the first exile. Ye deemed not that they would go forth, while they deemed that their strongholds would protect them from Allah. But Allah reached them from a place whereof they recked not, and cast terror in their hearts so that they ruined their houses with their own hands and the hands of the believers. So learn a lesson, O ye who have eyes
The Pen 68:12
Noun
مَّنَّاعࣲ لِّلۡخَیۡرِ مُعۡتَدٍ أَثِیمٍ ١٢
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International):
A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful
Abdel Haleem:
or hinderer of good, to anyone who is sinful, aggressive
Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall:
Hinderer of the good, transgressor, malefacto
وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلۡخَیۡرُ مَنُوعًا ٢١
Umm Muhammad (Sahih International):
And when good touches him, withholding [of it]

but tight-fisted when good fortune comes his way

And, when good befalleth him, grudging
