Verse 11:99 in Context

95 كَأَن لَّمۡ یَغۡنَوۡا۟ فِیهَاۤۗ أَلَا بُعۡدࣰا لِّمَدۡیَنَ كَمَا بَعِدَتۡ ثَمُودُ ۝٩٥ ka-an lam yaghnaw fīhā alā buʿ'dan limadyana kamā baʿidat thamūd as if they had never lived and flourished there. Yes, away with the people of Midian, just like the Thamud 96 وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مُوسَىٰ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا وَسُلۡطَـٰنࣲ مُّبِینٍ ۝٩٦ walaqad arsalnā mūsā biāyātinā wasul'ṭānin mubīni We also sent Moses, with Our signs and clear authority 97 إِلَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنَ وَمَلَإِی۟هِۦ فَٱتَّبَعُوۤا۟ أَمۡرَ فِرۡعَوۡنَۖ وَمَاۤ أَمۡرُ فِرۡعَوۡنَ بِرَشِیدࣲ ۝٩٧ ilā fir'ʿawna wamala-ihi fa-ittabaʿū amra fir'ʿawna wamā amru fir'ʿawna birashīdi to Pharaoh and his supporters, but they followed Pharaoh’s orders, and Pharaoh’s orders were misguided 98 یَقۡدُمُ قَوۡمَهُۥ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ فَأَوۡرَدَهُمُ ٱلنَّارَۖ وَبِئۡسَ ٱلۡوِرۡدُ ٱلۡمَوۡرُودُ ۝٩٨ yaqdumu qawmahu yawma l-qiyāmati fa-awradahumu l-nāra wabi'sa l-wir'du l-mawrūd He will be at the forefront of his people on the Day of Resurrection, leading them down towards the Fire. What a foul drinking place to be led to

99 وَأُتۡبِعُوا۟ فِی هَـٰذِهِۦ لَعۡنَةࣰ وَیَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِۚ بِئۡسَ ٱلرِّفۡدُ ٱلۡمَرۡفُودُ ۝٩٩ wa-ut'biʿū fī hādhihi laʿnatan wayawma l-qiyāmati bi'sa l-rif'du l-marfūd They were pursued by God’s rejection in this life and will be on the Day of Resurrection, too. What a foul gift to be given

100 ذَ ٰلِكَ مِنۡ أَنۢبَاۤءِ ٱلۡقُرَىٰ نَقُصُّهُۥ عَلَیۡكَۖ مِنۡهَا قَاۤىِٕمࣱ وَحَصِیدࣱ ۝١٠٠ dhālika min anbāi l-qurā naquṣṣuhu ʿalayka min'hā qāimun waḥaṣīdu We relate to you [Muhammad] such accounts of earlier towns: some of them are still standing; some have been mown down 101 وَمَا ظَلَمۡنَـٰهُمۡ وَلَـٰكِن ظَلَمُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَهُمۡۖ فَمَاۤ أَغۡنَتۡ عَنۡهُمۡ ءَالِهَتُهُمُ ٱلَّتِی یَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مِن شَیۡءࣲ لَّمَّا جَاۤءَ أَمۡرُ رَبِّكَۖ وَمَا زَادُوهُمۡ غَیۡرَ تَتۡبِیبࣲ ۝١٠١ wamā ẓalamnāhum walākin ẓalamū anfusahum famā aghnat ʿanhum ālihatuhumu allatī yadʿūna min dūni l-lahi min shayin lammā jāa amru rabbika wamā zādūhum ghayra tatbībi We did not wrong them; they wronged themselves. Their gods, which they called on beside God, were no use to them when what your Lord had ordained came about; they only increased their ruin 102 وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ أَخۡذُ رَبِّكَ إِذَاۤ أَخَذَ ٱلۡقُرَىٰ وَهِیَ ظَـٰلِمَةٌۚ إِنَّ أَخۡذَهُۥۤ أَلِیمࣱ شَدِیدٌ ۝١٠٢ wakadhālika akhdhu rabbika idhā akhadha l-qurā wahiya ẓālimatun inna akhdhahu alīmun shadīdu Such is the punishment of your Lord for towns in the midst of their sins: His punishment is terrible and severe 103 إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰ لِّمَنۡ خَافَ عَذَابَ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ یَوۡمࣱ مَّجۡمُوعࣱ لَّهُ ٱلنَّاسُ وَذَ ٰلِكَ یَوۡمࣱ مَّشۡهُودࣱ ۝١٠٣ inna fī dhālika laāyatan liman khāfa ʿadhāba l-ākhirati dhālika yawmun majmūʿun lahu l-nāsu wadhālika yawmun mashhūdu There truly is a sign in this for anyone who fears the punishment of the Hereafter. That is a Day in which all people will be gathered together, a Day for all to see
