Verse 28:64 in Context

60 وَمَاۤ أُوتِیتُم مِّن شَیۡءࣲ فَمَتَـٰعُ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَزِینَتُهَاۚ وَمَا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ خَیۡرࣱ وَأَبۡقَىٰۤۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٦٠ wamā ūtītum min shayin famatāʿu l-ḥayati l-dun'yā wazīnatuhā wamā ʿinda l-lahi khayrun wa-abqā afalā taʿqilūn Whatever things you have been given for the life of this world are merely [temporary] gratification and vanity: that which is with God is better and more lasting- will you not use your reason 61 أَفَمَن وَعَدۡنَـٰهُ وَعۡدًا حَسَنࣰا فَهُوَ لَـٰقِیهِ كَمَن مَّتَّعۡنَـٰهُ مَتَـٰعَ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا ثُمَّ هُوَ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ مِنَ ٱلۡمُحۡضَرِینَ ۝٦١ afaman waʿadnāhu waʿdan ḥasanan fahuwa lāqīhi kaman mattaʿnāhu matāʿa l-ḥayati l-dun'yā thumma huwa yawma l-qiyāmati mina l-muḥ'ḍarīn Can the person who will see the fulfilment of the good promise We gave him be compared to someone We have given some enjoyments for this worldly life but who, on the Day of Resurrection, will be summoned 62 وَیَوۡمَ یُنَادِیهِمۡ فَیَقُولُ أَیۡنَ شُرَكَاۤءِیَ ٱلَّذِینَ كُنتُمۡ تَزۡعُمُونَ ۝٦٢ wayawma yunādīhim fayaqūlu ayna shurakāiya alladhīna kuntum tazʿumūn The Day will come when God will call them, saying, ‘Where now are those you allege are My partners?’ 63 قَالَ ٱلَّذِینَ حَقَّ عَلَیۡهِمُ ٱلۡقَوۡلُ رَبَّنَا هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ ٱلَّذِینَ أَغۡوَیۡنَاۤ أَغۡوَیۡنَـٰهُمۡ كَمَا غَوَیۡنَاۖ تَبَرَّأۡنَاۤ إِلَیۡكَۖ مَا كَانُوۤا۟ إِیَّانَا یَعۡبُدُونَ ۝٦٣ qāla alladhīna ḥaqqa ʿalayhimu l-qawlu rabbanā hāulāi alladhīna aghwaynā aghwaynāhum kamā ghawaynā tabarranā ilayka mā kānū iyyānā yaʿbudūn and those [ringleaders] against whom the verdict will be passed will say, ‘Our Lord, these are the ones we caused to deviate. We caused them to deviate as we ourselves deviated, but now we disown them before You: they did not really serve us.’

64 وَقِیلَ ٱدۡعُوا۟ شُرَكَاۤءَكُمۡ فَدَعَوۡهُمۡ فَلَمۡ یَسۡتَجِیبُوا۟ لَهُمۡ وَرَأَوُا۟ ٱلۡعَذَابَۚ لَوۡ أَنَّهُمۡ كَانُوا۟ یَهۡتَدُونَ ۝٦٤ waqīla id'ʿū shurakāakum fadaʿawhum falam yastajībū lahum wara-awū l-ʿadhāba law annahum kānū yahtadūn It will then be said to them, ‘Now call those you worshipped as partners,’ and they will call them but receive no answer. They will see the suffering and wish they had followed guidance

65 وَیَوۡمَ یُنَادِیهِمۡ فَیَقُولُ مَاذَاۤ أَجَبۡتُمُ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝٦٥ wayawma yunādīhim fayaqūlu mādhā ajabtumu l-mur'salīn On that Day He will call them, saying, ‘How did you respond to My messengers?’ 66 فَعَمِیَتۡ عَلَیۡهِمُ ٱلۡأَنۢبَاۤءُ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ فَهُمۡ لَا یَتَسَاۤءَلُونَ ۝٦٦ faʿamiyat ʿalayhimu l-anbāu yawma-idhin fahum lā yatasāalūn All arguments will seem obscure to them on that Day; they will not be able to consult one another 67 فَأَمَّا مَن تَابَ وَءَامَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَـٰلِحࣰا فَعَسَىٰۤ أَن یَكُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُفۡلِحِینَ ۝٦٧ fa-ammā man tāba waāmana waʿamila ṣāliḥan faʿasā an yakūna mina l-muf'liḥīn Yet anyone who has repented, believed, and done good deeds can hope to find himself among the successful 68 وَرَبُّكَ یَخۡلُقُ مَا یَشَاۤءُ وَیَخۡتَارُۗ مَا كَانَ لَهُمُ ٱلۡخِیَرَةُۚ سُبۡحَـٰنَ ٱللَّهِ وَتَعَـٰلَىٰ عَمَّا یُشۡرِكُونَ ۝٦٨ warabbuka yakhluqu mā yashāu wayakhtāru mā kāna lahumu l-khiyaratu sub'ḥāna l-lahi wataʿālā ʿammā yush'rikūn Your Lord creates what He pleases and chooses those He will- they have no choice- so glory be to God, and may He be exalted above the partners they ascribe to Him
