Verse 3:120 in Context

116 إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَن تُغۡنِیَ عَنۡهُمۡ أَمۡوَ ٰلُهُمۡ وَلَاۤ أَوۡلَـٰدُهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ شَیۡءࣰاۖ وَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلنَّارِۖ هُمۡ فِیهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ ۝١١٦ inna alladhīna kafarū lan tugh'niya ʿanhum amwāluhum walā awlāduhum mina l-lahi shayan wa-ulāika aṣḥābu l-nāri hum fīhā khālidūn As for those who disbelieve, neither their possessions nor their children will help them against God- they will be companions in the Fire, there to remain 117 مَثَلُ مَا یُنفِقُونَ فِی هَـٰذِهِ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا كَمَثَلِ رِیحࣲ فِیهَا صِرٌّ أَصَابَتۡ حَرۡثَ قَوۡمࣲ ظَلَمُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَهُمۡ فَأَهۡلَكَتۡهُۚ وَمَا ظَلَمَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَلَـٰكِنۡ أَنفُسَهُمۡ یَظۡلِمُونَ ۝١١٧ mathalu mā yunfiqūna fī hādhihi l-ḥayati l-dun'yā kamathali rīḥin fīhā ṣirrun aṣābat ḥartha qawmin ẓalamū anfusahum fa-ahlakathu wamā ẓalamahumu l-lahu walākin anfusahum yaẓlimūn and whatever they give away in this life will be nullified: a frosty wind strikes and destroys the harvest of people who have wronged themselves. It was not God who wronged them; they wronged themselves 118 یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَتَّخِذُوا۟ بِطَانَةࣰ مِّن دُونِكُمۡ لَا یَأۡلُونَكُمۡ خَبَالࣰا وَدُّوا۟ مَا عَنِتُّمۡ قَدۡ بَدَتِ ٱلۡبَغۡضَاۤءُ مِنۡ أَفۡوَ ٰهِهِمۡ وَمَا تُخۡفِی صُدُورُهُمۡ أَكۡبَرُۚ قَدۡ بَیَّنَّا لَكُمُ ٱلۡءَایَـٰتِۖ إِن كُنتُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١١٨ yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū lā tattakhidhū biṭānatan min dūnikum lā yalūnakum khabālan waddū mā ʿanittum qad badati l-baghḍāu min afwāhihim wamā tukh'fī ṣudūruhum akbaru qad bayyannā lakumu l-āyāti in kuntum taʿqilūn You who believe, do not take for your intimates such outsiders as spare no effort to ruin you and want to see you suffer: their hatred is evident from their mouths, but what their hearts conceal is far worse. We have made Our revelations clear for you; will you not use your reason 119 هَـٰۤأَنتُمۡ أُو۟لَاۤءِ تُحِبُّونَهُمۡ وَلَا یُحِبُّونَكُمۡ وَتُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ كُلِّهِۦ وَإِذَا لَقُوكُمۡ قَالُوۤا۟ ءَامَنَّا وَإِذَا خَلَوۡا۟ عَضُّوا۟ عَلَیۡكُمُ ٱلۡأَنَامِلَ مِنَ ٱلۡغَیۡظِۚ قُلۡ مُوتُوا۟ بِغَیۡظِكُمۡۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِیمُۢ بِذَاتِ ٱلصُّدُورِ ۝١١٩ hāantum ulāi tuḥibbūnahum walā yuḥibbūnakum watu'minūna bil-kitābi kullihi wa-idhā laqūkum qālū āmannā wa-idhā khalaw ʿaḍḍū ʿalaykumu l-anāmila mina l-ghayẓi qul mūtū bighayẓikum inna l-laha ʿalīmun bidhāti l-ṣudūr This is how it is: here you are, you love them, but they do not love you; you believe in all the Scriptures and when they meet you, they say, ‘We believe,’ but when they are alone, they bite their fingertips in rage at you. [Prophet], say, ‘Die of rage [if you wish]!’ God knows exactly what is in everyone’s hearts

120 إِن تَمۡسَسۡكُمۡ حَسَنَةࣱ تَسُؤۡهُمۡ وَإِن تُصِبۡكُمۡ سَیِّئَةࣱ یَفۡرَحُوا۟ بِهَاۖ وَإِن تَصۡبِرُوا۟ وَتَتَّقُوا۟ لَا یَضُرُّكُمۡ كَیۡدُهُمۡ شَیۡءًاۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِمَا یَعۡمَلُونَ مُحِیطࣱ ۝١٢٠ in tamsaskum ḥasanatun tasu'hum wa-in tuṣib'kum sayyi-atun yafraḥū bihā wa-in taṣbirū watattaqū lā yaḍurrukum kayduhum shayan inna l-laha bimā yaʿmalūna muḥīṭu They grieve at any good that befalls you [believers] and rejoice at your misfortunes. But if you are steadfast and conscious of God, their scheming will not harm you in the least: God encircles everything they do

121 وَإِذۡ غَدَوۡتَ مِنۡ أَهۡلِكَ تُبَوِّئُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ مَقَـٰعِدَ لِلۡقِتَالِۗ وَٱللَّهُ سَمِیعٌ عَلِیمٌ ۝١٢١ wa-idh ghadawta min ahlika tubawwi-u l-mu'minīna maqāʿida lil'qitāli wal-lahu samīʿun ʿalīmu [Prophet], remember when you left your home at dawn to assign battle positions to the believers: God hears and knows everything 122 إِذۡ هَمَّت طَّاۤىِٕفَتَانِ مِنكُمۡ أَن تَفۡشَلَا وَٱللَّهُ وَلِیُّهُمَاۗ وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَلۡیَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝١٢٢ idh hammat ṭāifatāni minkum an tafshalā wal-lahu waliyyuhumā waʿalā l-lahi falyatawakkali l-mu'minūn Remember when two groups of you were about to lose heart and God protected them- let the believers put their trust in God 123 وَلَقَدۡ نَصَرَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِبَدۡرࣲ وَأَنتُمۡ أَذِلَّةࣱۖ فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَشۡكُرُونَ ۝١٢٣ walaqad naṣarakumu l-lahu bibadrin wa-antum adhillatun fa-ittaqū l-laha laʿallakum tashkurūn God helped you at Badr when you were very weak. Be mindful of God, so that you may be grateful 124 إِذۡ تَقُولُ لِلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ أَلَن یَكۡفِیَكُمۡ أَن یُمِدَّكُمۡ رَبُّكُم بِثَلَـٰثَةِ ءَالَـٰفࣲ مِّنَ ٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةِ مُنزَلِینَ ۝١٢٤ idh taqūlu lil'mu'minīna alan yakfiyakum an yumiddakum rabbukum bithalāthati ālāfin mina l-malāikati munzalīn Remember when you said to the believers, ‘Will you be satisfied if your Lord reinforces you by send-ing down three thousand angels
