Verse 3:85 in Context

81 وَإِذۡ أَخَذَ ٱللَّهُ مِیثَـٰقَ ٱلنَّبِیِّـۧنَ لَمَاۤ ءَاتَیۡتُكُم مِّن كِتَـٰبࣲ وَحِكۡمَةࣲ ثُمَّ جَاۤءَكُمۡ رَسُولࣱ مُّصَدِّقࣱ لِّمَا مَعَكُمۡ لَتُؤۡمِنُنَّ بِهِۦ وَلَتَنصُرُنَّهُۥۚ قَالَ ءَأَقۡرَرۡتُمۡ وَأَخَذۡتُمۡ عَلَىٰ ذَ ٰلِكُمۡ إِصۡرِیۖ قَالُوۤا۟ أَقۡرَرۡنَاۚ قَالَ فَٱشۡهَدُوا۟ وَأَنَا۠ مَعَكُم مِّنَ ٱلشَّـٰهِدِینَ ۝٨١ wa-idh akhadha l-lahu mīthāqa l-nabiyīna lamā ātaytukum min kitābin waḥik'matin thumma jāakum rasūlun muṣaddiqun limā maʿakum latu'minunna bihi walatanṣurunnahu qāla a-aqrartum wa-akhadhtum ʿalā dhālikum iṣ'rī qālū aqrarnā qāla fa-ish'hadū wa-anā maʿakum mina l-shāhidīn God took a pledge from the prophets, saying, ‘If, after I have bestowed Scripture and wisdom upon you, a messenger comes confirming what you have been given, you must believe in him and support him. Do you affirm this and accept My pledge as binding on you?’ They said, ‘We do.’ He said, ‘Then bear witness and I too will bear witness.’ 82 فَمَن تَوَلَّىٰ بَعۡدَ ذَ ٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡفَـٰسِقُونَ ۝٨٢ faman tawallā baʿda dhālika fa-ulāika humu l-fāsiqūn Those who turn away after this are the ones who break pledges 83 أَفَغَیۡرَ دِینِ ٱللَّهِ یَبۡغُونَ وَلَهُۥۤ أَسۡلَمَ مَن فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ طَوۡعࣰا وَكَرۡهࣰا وَإِلَیۡهِ یُرۡجَعُونَ ۝٨٣ afaghayra dīni l-lahi yabghūna walahu aslama man fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi ṭawʿan wakarhan wa-ilayhi yur'jaʿūn Do they seek anything other than submission to God? Everyone in the heavens and earth submits to Him, willingly or unwillingly; they will all be returned to Him 84 قُلۡ ءَامَنَّا بِٱللَّهِ وَمَاۤ أُنزِلَ عَلَیۡنَا وَمَاۤ أُنزِلَ عَلَىٰۤ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ وَإِسۡمَـٰعِیلَ وَإِسۡحَـٰقَ وَیَعۡقُوبَ وَٱلۡأَسۡبَاطِ وَمَاۤ أُوتِیَ مُوسَىٰ وَعِیسَىٰ وَٱلنَّبِیُّونَ مِن رَّبِّهِمۡ لَا نُفَرِّقُ بَیۡنَ أَحَدࣲ مِّنۡهُمۡ وَنَحۡنُ لَهُۥ مُسۡلِمُونَ ۝٨٤ qul āmannā bil-lahi wamā unzila ʿalaynā wamā unzila ʿalā ib'rāhīma wa-is'māʿīla wa-is'ḥāqa wayaʿqūba wal-asbāṭi wamā ūtiya mūsā waʿīsā wal-nabiyūna min rabbihim lā nufarriqu bayna aḥadin min'hum wanaḥnu lahu mus'limūn Say [Muhammad], ‘We [Muslims] believe in God and in what has been sent down to us and to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes. We believe in what has been given to Moses, Jesus, and the prophets from their Lord. We do not make a distinction between any of the [prophets]. It is to Him that we devote ourselves.’

85 وَمَن یَبۡتَغِ غَیۡرَ ٱلۡإِسۡلَـٰمِ دِینࣰا فَلَن یُقۡبَلَ مِنۡهُ وَهُوَ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ مِنَ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرِینَ ۝٨٥ waman yabtaghi ghayra l-is'lāmi dīnan falan yuq'bala min'hu wahuwa fī l-ākhirati mina l-khāsirīn If anyone seeks a religion other than [islam] complete devotion to God, it will not be accepted from him: he will be one of the losers in the Hereafter

86 كَیۡفَ یَهۡدِی ٱللَّهُ قَوۡمࣰا كَفَرُوا۟ بَعۡدَ إِیمَـٰنِهِمۡ وَشَهِدُوۤا۟ أَنَّ ٱلرَّسُولَ حَقࣱّ وَجَاۤءَهُمُ ٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتُۚ وَٱللَّهُ لَا یَهۡدِی ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝٨٦ kayfa yahdī l-lahu qawman kafarū baʿda īmānihim washahidū anna l-rasūla ḥaqqun wajāahumu l-bayinātu wal-lahu lā yahdī l-qawma l-ẓālimīn Why would God guide people who deny the truth, after they have believed and acknowledged that the Messenger is true, and after they have been shown clear proof? God does not guide evildoers 87 أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ جَزَاۤؤُهُمۡ أَنَّ عَلَیۡهِمۡ لَعۡنَةَ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةِ وَٱلنَّاسِ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٨٧ ulāika jazāuhum anna ʿalayhim laʿnata l-lahi wal-malāikati wal-nāsi ajmaʿīn such people will be rewarded with rejection by God, by the angels, by all people 88 خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَا لَا یُخَفَّفُ عَنۡهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُ وَلَا هُمۡ یُنظَرُونَ ۝٨٨ khālidīna fīhā lā yukhaffafu ʿanhumu l-ʿadhābu walā hum yunẓarūn and so they will remain, with no relief or respite for their suffering 89 إِلَّا ٱلَّذِینَ تَابُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ ذَ ٰلِكَ وَأَصۡلَحُوا۟ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمٌ ۝٨٩ illā alladhīna tābū min baʿdi dhālika wa-aṣlaḥū fa-inna l-laha ghafūrun raḥīmu Not so those who afterwards repent and mend their ways- God is most forgiving and merciful
