Verse 3:87 in Context

83 أَفَغَیۡرَ دِینِ ٱللَّهِ یَبۡغُونَ وَلَهُۥۤ أَسۡلَمَ مَن فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ طَوۡعࣰا وَكَرۡهࣰا وَإِلَیۡهِ یُرۡجَعُونَ ۝٨٣ afaghayra dīni l-lahi yabghūna walahu aslama man fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi ṭawʿan wakarhan wa-ilayhi yur'jaʿūn Do they seek anything other than submission to God? Everyone in the heavens and earth submits to Him, willingly or unwillingly; they will all be returned to Him 84 قُلۡ ءَامَنَّا بِٱللَّهِ وَمَاۤ أُنزِلَ عَلَیۡنَا وَمَاۤ أُنزِلَ عَلَىٰۤ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ وَإِسۡمَـٰعِیلَ وَإِسۡحَـٰقَ وَیَعۡقُوبَ وَٱلۡأَسۡبَاطِ وَمَاۤ أُوتِیَ مُوسَىٰ وَعِیسَىٰ وَٱلنَّبِیُّونَ مِن رَّبِّهِمۡ لَا نُفَرِّقُ بَیۡنَ أَحَدࣲ مِّنۡهُمۡ وَنَحۡنُ لَهُۥ مُسۡلِمُونَ ۝٨٤ qul āmannā bil-lahi wamā unzila ʿalaynā wamā unzila ʿalā ib'rāhīma wa-is'māʿīla wa-is'ḥāqa wayaʿqūba wal-asbāṭi wamā ūtiya mūsā waʿīsā wal-nabiyūna min rabbihim lā nufarriqu bayna aḥadin min'hum wanaḥnu lahu mus'limūn Say [Muhammad], ‘We [Muslims] believe in God and in what has been sent down to us and to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes. We believe in what has been given to Moses, Jesus, and the prophets from their Lord. We do not make a distinction between any of the [prophets]. It is to Him that we devote ourselves.’ 85 وَمَن یَبۡتَغِ غَیۡرَ ٱلۡإِسۡلَـٰمِ دِینࣰا فَلَن یُقۡبَلَ مِنۡهُ وَهُوَ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ مِنَ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرِینَ ۝٨٥ waman yabtaghi ghayra l-is'lāmi dīnan falan yuq'bala min'hu wahuwa fī l-ākhirati mina l-khāsirīn If anyone seeks a religion other than [islam] complete devotion to God, it will not be accepted from him: he will be one of the losers in the Hereafter 86 كَیۡفَ یَهۡدِی ٱللَّهُ قَوۡمࣰا كَفَرُوا۟ بَعۡدَ إِیمَـٰنِهِمۡ وَشَهِدُوۤا۟ أَنَّ ٱلرَّسُولَ حَقࣱّ وَجَاۤءَهُمُ ٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتُۚ وَٱللَّهُ لَا یَهۡدِی ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝٨٦ kayfa yahdī l-lahu qawman kafarū baʿda īmānihim washahidū anna l-rasūla ḥaqqun wajāahumu l-bayinātu wal-lahu lā yahdī l-qawma l-ẓālimīn Why would God guide people who deny the truth, after they have believed and acknowledged that the Messenger is true, and after they have been shown clear proof? God does not guide evildoers

87 أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ جَزَاۤؤُهُمۡ أَنَّ عَلَیۡهِمۡ لَعۡنَةَ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةِ وَٱلنَّاسِ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝٨٧ ulāika jazāuhum anna ʿalayhim laʿnata l-lahi wal-malāikati wal-nāsi ajmaʿīn such people will be rewarded with rejection by God, by the angels, by all people

88 خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَا لَا یُخَفَّفُ عَنۡهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُ وَلَا هُمۡ یُنظَرُونَ ۝٨٨ khālidīna fīhā lā yukhaffafu ʿanhumu l-ʿadhābu walā hum yunẓarūn and so they will remain, with no relief or respite for their suffering 89 إِلَّا ٱلَّذِینَ تَابُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ ذَ ٰلِكَ وَأَصۡلَحُوا۟ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمٌ ۝٨٩ illā alladhīna tābū min baʿdi dhālika wa-aṣlaḥū fa-inna l-laha ghafūrun raḥīmu Not so those who afterwards repent and mend their ways- God is most forgiving and merciful 90 إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ بَعۡدَ إِیمَـٰنِهِمۡ ثُمَّ ٱزۡدَادُوا۟ كُفۡرࣰا لَّن تُقۡبَلَ تَوۡبَتُهُمۡ وَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلضَّاۤلُّونَ ۝٩٠ inna alladhīna kafarū baʿda īmānihim thumma iz'dādū kuf'ran lan tuq'bala tawbatuhum wa-ulāika humu l-ḍālūn [although] the repentance of those who, having believed, then increase in their disbelief, will not be accepted. They are the ones who have gone [far] astray 91 إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَمَاتُوا۟ وَهُمۡ كُفَّارࣱ فَلَن یُقۡبَلَ مِنۡ أَحَدِهِم مِّلۡءُ ٱلۡأَرۡضِ ذَهَبࣰا وَلَوِ ٱفۡتَدَىٰ بِهِۦۤۗ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ لَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِیمࣱ وَمَا لَهُم مِّن نَّـٰصِرِینَ ۝٩١ inna alladhīna kafarū wamātū wahum kuffārun falan yuq'bala min aḥadihim mil'u l-arḍi dhahaban walawi if'tadā bihi ulāika lahum ʿadhābun alīmun wamā lahum min nāṣirīn those who disbelieve and die disbelievers will not be saved even if they offer enough gold to fill the entire earth. Agonizing torment is in store for them, and there will be no one to help them
