Verse 38:2 in Context

1 صۤۚ وَٱلۡقُرۡءَانِ ذِی ٱلذِّكۡرِ ۝١ sad wal-qur'āni dhī l-dhik'r Sad By the Quran with its reminding . . .
2 بَلِ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ فِی عِزَّةࣲ وَشِقَاقࣲ ۝٢ bali alladhīna kafarū fī ʿizzatin washiqāqi Yet the disbelievers are steeped in arrogance and hostility
3 كَمۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِهِم مِّن قَرۡنࣲ فَنَادَوا۟ وَّلَاتَ حِینَ مَنَاصࣲ ۝٣ kam ahlaknā min qablihim min qarnin fanādaw walāta ḥīna manāṣi How many generations We have destroyed before them! They all cried out, once it was too late, for escape 4 وَعَجِبُوۤا۟ أَن جَاۤءَهُم مُّنذِرࣱ مِّنۡهُمۡۖ وَقَالَ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرُونَ هَـٰذَا سَـٰحِرࣱ كَذَّابٌ ۝٤ waʿajibū an jāahum mundhirun min'hum waqāla l-kāfirūna hādhā sāḥirun kadhābu The disbelievers think it strange that a prophet of their own people has come to warn them: they say, ‘He is just a lying sorcerer 5 أَجَعَلَ ٱلۡءَالِهَةَ إِلَـٰهࣰا وَ ٰحِدًاۖ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَشَیۡءٌ عُجَابࣱ ۝٥ ajaʿala l-ālihata ilāhan wāḥidan inna hādhā lashayon ʿujābu How can he claim that all the gods are but one God? What an astonishing thing [to claim]!’ 6 وَٱنطَلَقَ ٱلۡمَلَأُ مِنۡهُمۡ أَنِ ٱمۡشُوا۟ وَٱصۡبِرُوا۟ عَلَىٰۤ ءَالِهَتِكُمۡۖ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَشَیۡءࣱ یُرَادُ ۝٦ wa-inṭalaqa l-mala-u min'hum ani im'shū wa-iṣ'birū ʿalā ālihatikum inna hādhā lashayon yurād Their leaders depart, saying, ‘Walk away! Stay faithful to your gods! That is what you must do
