Verse 38:9 in Context

5 أَجَعَلَ ٱلۡءَالِهَةَ إِلَـٰهࣰا وَ ٰحِدًاۖ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَشَیۡءٌ عُجَابࣱ ۝٥ ajaʿala l-ālihata ilāhan wāḥidan inna hādhā lashayon ʿujābu How can he claim that all the gods are but one God? What an astonishing thing [to claim]!’ 6 وَٱنطَلَقَ ٱلۡمَلَأُ مِنۡهُمۡ أَنِ ٱمۡشُوا۟ وَٱصۡبِرُوا۟ عَلَىٰۤ ءَالِهَتِكُمۡۖ إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَشَیۡءࣱ یُرَادُ ۝٦ wa-inṭalaqa l-mala-u min'hum ani im'shū wa-iṣ'birū ʿalā ālihatikum inna hādhā lashayon yurād Their leaders depart, saying, ‘Walk away! Stay faithful to your gods! That is what you must do 7 مَا سَمِعۡنَا بِهَـٰذَا فِی ٱلۡمِلَّةِ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا ٱخۡتِلَـٰقٌ ۝٧ mā samiʿ'nā bihādhā fī l-milati l-ākhirati in hādhā illā ikh'tilāqu We did not hear any such claim in the last religion: it is all an invention 8 أَءُنزِلَ عَلَیۡهِ ٱلذِّكۡرُ مِنۢ بَیۡنِنَاۚ بَلۡ هُمۡ فِی شَكࣲّ مِّن ذِكۡرِیۚ بَل لَّمَّا یَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابِ ۝٨ a-unzila ʿalayhi l-dhik'ru min bayninā bal hum fī shakkin min dhik'rī bal lammā yadhūqū ʿadhāb Was the message sent only to him out of all of us?’ In fact they doubt My warning; in fact they have not tasted My punishment yet

9 أَمۡ عِندَهُمۡ خَزَاۤىِٕنُ رَحۡمَةِ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡعَزِیزِ ٱلۡوَهَّابِ ۝٩ am ʿindahum khazāinu raḥmati rabbika l-ʿazīzi l-wahāb Do they possess the treasures of your Lord’s bounty, the Mighty, the All Giving

10 أَمۡ لَهُم مُّلۡكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَاۖ فَلۡیَرۡتَقُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَسۡبَـٰبِ ۝١٠ am lahum mul'ku l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wamā baynahumā falyartaqū fī l-asbāb Do they control the heavens and earth and everything between? Let them climb their ropes 11 جُندࣱ مَّا هُنَالِكَ مَهۡزُومࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَحۡزَابِ ۝١١ jundun mā hunālika mahzūmun mina l-aḥzāb their armed alliance is weak and will be crushed 12 كَذَّبَتۡ قَبۡلَهُمۡ قَوۡمُ نُوحࣲ وَعَادࣱ وَفِرۡعَوۡنُ ذُو ٱلۡأَوۡتَادِ ۝١٢ kadhabat qablahum qawmu nūḥin waʿādun wafir'ʿawnu dhū l-awtād The people of Noah, Ad, and firmly-supported Pharaoh rejected their prophets before them 13 وَثَمُودُ وَقَوۡمُ لُوطࣲ وَأَصۡحَـٰبُ لۡءَیۡكَةِۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ ٱلۡأَحۡزَابُ ۝١٣ wathamūdu waqawmu lūṭin wa-aṣḥābu al'aykati ulāika l-aḥzāb Thamud, the people of Lot, and the Forest-Dwellers each formed opposition [against theirs]
