Verse 46:8 in Context

4 قُلۡ أَرَءَیۡتُم مَّا تَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ أَرُونِی مَاذَا خَلَقُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلۡأَرۡضِ أَمۡ لَهُمۡ شِرۡكࣱ فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِۖ ٱئۡتُونِی بِكِتَـٰبࣲ مِّن قَبۡلِ هَـٰذَاۤ أَوۡ أَثَـٰرَةࣲ مِّنۡ عِلۡمٍ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَـٰدِقِینَ ۝٤ qul ara-aytum mā tadʿūna min dūni l-lahi arūnī mādhā khalaqū mina l-arḍi am lahum shir'kun fī l-samāwāti i'tūnī bikitābin min qabli hādhā aw athāratin min ʿil'min in kuntum ṣādiqīn Say [Prophet], ‘Consider those you pray to other than God: show me which part of the earth they created or which share of the heavens they own; bring me a previous scripture or some vestige of divine knowledge––if what you say is true.’ 5 وَمَنۡ أَضَلُّ مِمَّن یَدۡعُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مَن لَّا یَسۡتَجِیبُ لَهُۥۤ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ وَهُمۡ عَن دُعَاۤىِٕهِمۡ غَـٰفِلُونَ ۝٥ waman aḍallu mimman yadʿū min dūni l-lahi man lā yastajību lahu ilā yawmi l-qiyāmati wahum ʿan duʿāihim ghāfilūn Who could be more wrong than a person who calls on those other than God, those who will not answer him till the Day of Resurrection, those who are unaware of his prayers 6 وَإِذَا حُشِرَ ٱلنَّاسُ كَانُوا۟ لَهُمۡ أَعۡدَاۤءࣰ وَكَانُوا۟ بِعِبَادَتِهِمۡ كَـٰفِرِینَ ۝٦ wa-idhā ḥushira l-nāsu kānū lahum aʿdāan wakānū biʿibādatihim kāfirīn those who, when all mankind is gathered, will become his enemies and disown his worship 7 وَإِذَا تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَیۡهِمۡ ءَایَـٰتُنَا بَیِّنَـٰتࣲ قَالَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِلۡحَقِّ لَمَّا جَاۤءَهُمۡ هَـٰذَا سِحۡرࣱ مُّبِینٌ ۝٧ wa-idhā tut'lā ʿalayhim āyātunā bayyinātin qāla alladhīna kafarū lil'ḥaqqi lammā jāahum hādhā siḥ'run mubīnu When Our revelations are recited to them in all their clarity, the disbelievers say of the Truth that has reached them, ‘This is clearly sorcery,’
8 أَمۡ یَقُولُونَ ٱفۡتَرَىٰهُۖ قُلۡ إِنِ ٱفۡتَرَیۡتُهُۥ فَلَا تَمۡلِكُونَ لِی مِنَ ٱللَّهِ شَیۡءًاۖ هُوَ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَا تُفِیضُونَ فِیهِۚ كَفَىٰ بِهِۦ شَهِیدَۢا بَیۡنِی وَبَیۡنَكُمۡۖ وَهُوَ ٱلۡغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝٨ am yaqūlūna if'tarāhu qul ini if'taraytuhu falā tamlikūna lī mina l-lahi shayan huwa aʿlamu bimā tufīḍūna fīhi kafā bihi shahīdan baynī wabaynakum wahuwa l-ghafūru l-raḥīm or they say, ‘He has invented it himself.’ Say [Prophet], ‘If I have really invented it, there is nothing you can do to save me from God. He knows best what you say amongst yourselves about it; He is sufficient as a witness between me and you; He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.’
9 قُلۡ مَا كُنتُ بِدۡعࣰا مِّنَ ٱلرُّسُلِ وَمَاۤ أَدۡرِی مَا یُفۡعَلُ بِی وَلَا بِكُمۡۖ إِنۡ أَتَّبِعُ إِلَّا مَا یُوحَىٰۤ إِلَیَّ وَمَاۤ أَنَا۠ إِلَّا نَذِیرࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝٩ qul mā kuntu bid'ʿan mina l-rusuli wamā adrī mā yuf'ʿalu bī walā bikum in attabiʿu illā mā yūḥā ilayya wamā anā illā nadhīrun mubīnu Say, ‘I am nothing new among God’s messengers. I do not know what will be done with me or you; I only follow what is revealed to me; I only warn plainly.’ 10 قُلۡ أَرَءَیۡتُمۡ إِن كَانَ مِنۡ عِندِ ٱللَّهِ وَكَفَرۡتُم بِهِۦ وَشَهِدَ شَاهِدࣱ مِّنۢ بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ عَلَىٰ مِثۡلِهِۦ فَءَامَنَ وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرۡتُمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یَهۡدِی ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝١٠ qul ara-aytum in kāna min ʿindi l-lahi wakafartum bihi washahida shāhidun min banī is'rāīla ʿalā mith'lihi faāmana wa-is'takbartum inna l-laha lā yahdī l-qawma l-ẓālimīn Say, ‘Have you thought: what if this Quran really is from God and you reject it? What if one of the Children of Israel testifies to its similarity [to earlier scripture] and believes in it, and yet you are too proud to [do the same]? God certainly does not guide evildoers.’ 11 وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَوۡ كَانَ خَیۡرࣰا مَّا سَبَقُونَاۤ إِلَیۡهِۚ وَإِذۡ لَمۡ یَهۡتَدُوا۟ بِهِۦ فَسَیَقُولُونَ هَـٰذَاۤ إِفۡكࣱ قَدِیمࣱ ۝١١ waqāla alladhīna kafarū lilladhīna āmanū law kāna khayran mā sabaqūnā ilayhi wa-idh lam yahtadū bihi fasayaqūlūna hādhā if'kun qadīmu Those who disbelieve say of the believers, ‘If there were any good in this Quran, they would not have believed in it before we did,’and, since they refuse to be guided by it, they say, ‘This is an ancient fabrication.’ 12 وَمِن قَبۡلِهِۦ كِتَـٰبُ مُوسَىٰۤ إِمَامࣰا وَرَحۡمَةࣰۚ وَهَـٰذَا كِتَـٰبࣱ مُّصَدِّقࣱ لِّسَانًا عَرَبِیࣰّا لِّیُنذِرَ ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوا۟ وَبُشۡرَىٰ لِلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝١٢ wamin qablihi kitābu mūsā imāman waraḥmatan wahādhā kitābun muṣaddiqun lisānan ʿarabiyyan liyundhira alladhīna ẓalamū wabush'rā lil'muḥ'sinīn Yet the scripture of Moses was revealed before it as a guide and a mercy, and this is a scripture confirming it in the Arabic language to warn those who do evil and bring good news for those who do good
