36
وَلَقَدۡ أَنذَرَهُم بَطۡشَتَنَا فَتَمَارَوۡا۟ بِٱلنُّذُرِ ٣٦
walaqad andharahum baṭshatanā fatamāraw bil-nudhur
He warned them of Our onslaught, but they dismissed the warning
37
وَلَقَدۡ رَ ٰوَدُوهُ عَن ضَیۡفِهِۦ فَطَمَسۡنَاۤ أَعۡیُنَهُمۡ فَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابِی وَنُذُرِ ٣٧
walaqad rāwadūhu ʿan ḍayfihi faṭamasnā aʿyunahum fadhūqū ʿadhābī wanudhur
they even demanded his guests from him- so We sealed their eyes- ‘ Taste My [terrible] punishment and [the fulfilment of] My warnings!’
38
وَلَقَدۡ صَبَّحَهُم بُكۡرَةً عَذَابࣱ مُّسۡتَقِرࣱّ ٣٨
walaqad ṣabbaḥahum buk'ratan ʿadhābun mus'taqirru
and early in the morning a punishment seized them that still remains
39
فَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابِی وَنُذُرِ ٣٩
fadhūqū ʿadhābī wanudhur
‘Taste My [terrible] punishment and [the fulfilment of] My warnings!’
40
وَلَقَدۡ یَسَّرۡنَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ لِلذِّكۡرِ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرࣲ ٤٠
walaqad yassarnā l-qur'āna lildhik'ri fahal min muddakiri
We have made it easy to learn lessons from the Quran: will anyone take heed
41
وَلَقَدۡ جَاۤءَ ءَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنَ ٱلنُّذُرُ ٤١
walaqad jāa āla fir'ʿawna l-nudhur
The people of Pharaoh also received warnings
42
كَذَّبُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا كُلِّهَا فَأَخَذۡنَـٰهُمۡ أَخۡذَ عَزِیزࣲ مُّقۡتَدِرٍ ٤٢
kadhabū biāyātinā kullihā fa-akhadhnāhum akhdha ʿazīzin muq'tadiri
They rejected all Our signs so We seized them with all Our might and power
43
أَكُفَّارُكُمۡ خَیۡرࣱ مِّنۡ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكُمۡ أَمۡ لَكُم بَرَاۤءَةࣱ فِی ٱلزُّبُرِ ٤٣
akuffārukum khayrun min ulāikum am lakum barāatun fī l-zubur
‘Are your disbelievers any better than these? Were you given an exemption in the Scripture?’
44
أَمۡ یَقُولُونَ نَحۡنُ جَمِیعࣱ مُّنتَصِرࣱ ٤٤
am yaqūlūna naḥnu jamīʿun muntaṣiru
Do they perhaps say, ‘We are a great army and we shall be victorious’
