10 وَفِرْعَوْنَ ذِي الْأَوْتَادِ WafirAAawna thee al-awtadi and the mighty and powerful Pharaoh 11 الَّذِينَ طَغَوْا فِي الْبِلَادِ Allatheena taghaw fee albiladi All of them committed excesses in their lands 12 فَأَكْثَرُوا فِيهَا الْفَسَادَ Faaktharoo feeha alfasada and spread corruption there 13 فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ سَوْطَ عَذَابٍ Fasabba AAalayhim rabbuka sawta AAathabin your Lord let a scourge of punishment loose on them
14 إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِالْمِرْصَادِ Inna rabbaka labialmirsadi Your Lord is always watchful
15 فَأَمَّا الْإِنسَانُ إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ رَبُّهُ فَأَكْرَمَهُ وَنَعَّمَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَكْرَمَنِ Faamma al-insanu itha ma ibtalahu rabbuhu faakramahu wanaAAAAamahu fayaqoolu rabbee akramani [The nature of] man is that, when his Lord tries him through honour and blessings, he says, ‘My Lord has honoured me,’ 16 وَأَمَّا إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَهَانَنِ Waamma itha ma ibtalahu faqadara AAalayhi rizqahu fayaqoolu rabbee ahanani but when He tries him through the restriction of his provision, he says, ‘My Lord has humiliated me.’ 17 كَلَّا بَل لَّا تُكْرِمُونَ الْيَتِيمَ Kalla bal la tukrimoona alyateema No indeed! You [people] do not honour orphans 18 وَلَا تَحَاضُّونَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ Wala tahaddoona AAala taAAami almiskeeni you do not urge one another to feed the poor
