1 Trials purify

۞ الۤمۤ ۝١

These are some of the letters of the Arabic language that appear at the beginning of some Qur'aanic chapters. Significance of these letters is a mystery. Omniscient Allah has perhaps purposely kept it mysterious to remind mankind of the limitation of knowledge that it is bestowed with

أَحَسِبَ ٱلنَّاسُ أَن یُتۡرَكُوۤا۟ أَن یَقُولُوۤا۟ ءَامَنَّا وَهُمۡ لَا یُفۡتَنُونَ ۝٢

Do people think that they shall be left alone once they say "We believe" and that they shall not be tested

aḥasiba l-nāsu an yut'rakū an yaqūlū āmannā wahum lā yuf'tanūn

وَلَقَدۡ فَتَنَّا ٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡۖ فَلَیَعۡلَمَنَّ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِینَ صَدَقُوا۟ وَلَیَعۡلَمَنَّ ٱلۡكَـٰذِبِینَ ۝٣

And We did test those before them. And then Allah does certainly know those that are truthful and He does certainly know those that lie

walaqad fatannā alladhīna min qablihim falayaʿlamanna l-lahu alladhīna ṣadaqū walayaʿlamanna l-kādhibīn

أَمۡ حَسِبَ ٱلَّذِینَ یَعۡمَلُونَ ٱلسَّیِّءَاتِ أَن یَسۡبِقُونَاۚ سَاۤءَ مَا یَحۡكُمُونَ ۝٤

Or do those who do ill deeds think that they shall outsmart Us? How badly do they judge

am ḥasiba alladhīna yaʿmalūna l-sayiāti an yasbiqūnā sāa mā yaḥkumūn

مَن كَانَ یَرۡجُوا۟ لِقَاۤءَ ٱللَّهِ فَإِنَّ أَجَلَ ٱللَّهِ لَءَاتࣲۚ وَهُوَ ٱلسَّمِیعُ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ۝٥

Let him, who is hopeful of meeting Allah, know that the term fixed by Allah for the meeting is surely coming! And He is the One wbo listens, the One who knows

man kāna yarjū liqāa l-lahi fa-inna ajala l-lahi laātin wahuwa l-samīʿu l-ʿalīm

وَمَن جَـٰهَدَ فَإِنَّمَا یُجَـٰهِدُ لِنَفۡسِهِۦۤۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَغَنِیٌّ عَنِ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٦

And he who strives, strives only for himself! Allah is indeed Independent of the worlds

waman jāhada fa-innamā yujāhidu linafsihi inna l-laha laghaniyyun ʿani l-ʿālamīn

وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ لَنُكَفِّرَنَّ عَنۡهُمۡ سَیِّءَاتِهِمۡ وَلَنَجۡزِیَنَّهُمۡ أَحۡسَنَ ٱلَّذِی كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٧

And those who believe and do righteous deeds, We shall certainly purge them of their bad deeds and shall certainly reward them for the good work that they did

wa-alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti lanukaffiranna ʿanhum sayyiātihim walanajziyannahum aḥsana alladhī kānū yaʿmalūn

وَوَصَّیۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ بِوَ ٰلِدَیۡهِ حُسۡنࣰاۖ وَإِن جَـٰهَدَاكَ لِتُشۡرِكَ بِی مَا لَیۡسَ لَكَ بِهِۦ عِلۡمࣱ فَلَا تُطِعۡهُمَاۤۚ إِلَیَّ مَرۡجِعُكُمۡ فَأُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٨

And We have instructed mankind to be good to one's own parents. And if the two (parents) try to make you worship besides Me anyone that you have no knowledge of, obey them not! To Me is your return, and then I shall tell you what you have been doing

wawaṣṣaynā l-insāna biwālidayhi ḥus'nan wa-in jāhadāka litush'rika bī mā laysa laka bihi ʿil'mun falā tuṭiʿ'humā ilayya marjiʿukum fa-unabbi-ukum bimā kuntum taʿmalūn

وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ لَنُدۡخِلَنَّهُمۡ فِی ٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝٩

And those who believe and do righteous deeds, We shall certainly put them among the righteous

wa-alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti lanud'khilannahum fī l-ṣāliḥīn

وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن یَقُولُ ءَامَنَّا بِٱللَّهِ فَإِذَاۤ أُوذِیَ فِی ٱللَّهِ جَعَلَ فِتۡنَةَ ٱلنَّاسِ كَعَذَابِ ٱللَّهِۖ وَلَىِٕن جَاۤءَ نَصۡرࣱ مِّن رَّبِّكَ لَیَقُولُنَّ إِنَّا كُنَّا مَعَكُمۡۚ أَوَ لَیۡسَ ٱللَّهُ بِأَعۡلَمَ بِمَا فِی صُدُورِ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٠

And among the people there are some who say, "We believe in Allah." Then when they get hurt in Allah's way, they treat man-inflicted persecution as Allah's punishment. And then, if help comes from your Lord, they say, "We were indeed with you." Is not Allah well aware of what is going on in the minds of the worlds ?

wamina l-nāsi man yaqūlu āmannā bil-lahi fa-idhā ūdhiya fī l-lahi jaʿala fit'nata l-nāsi kaʿadhābi l-lahi wala-in jāa naṣrun min rabbika layaqūlunna innā kunnā maʿakum awalaysa l-lahu bi-aʿlama bimā fī ṣudūri l-ʿālamīn

وَلَیَعۡلَمَنَّ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَلَیَعۡلَمَنَّ ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقِینَ ۝١١

And Allah does certainly know those who believe, and He does certainly know the hypocrites

walayaʿlamanna l-lahu alladhīna āmanū walayaʿlamanna l-munāfiqīn

وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱتَّبِعُوا۟ سَبِیلَنَا وَلۡنَحۡمِلۡ خَطَـٰیَـٰكُمۡ وَمَا هُم بِحَـٰمِلِینَ مِنۡ خَطَـٰیَـٰهُم مِّن شَیۡءٍۖ إِنَّهُمۡ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ ۝١٢

And those who suppress the Truth say to those who believe, "Follow our path, and we shall surely bear with your errors. And they shall bear with none of their errors! They are liars, certainly indeed!"

waqāla alladhīna kafarū lilladhīna āmanū ittabiʿū sabīlanā walnaḥmil khaṭāyākum wamā hum biḥāmilīna min khaṭāyāhum min shayin innahum lakādhibūn

وَلَیَحۡمِلُنَّ أَثۡقَالَهُمۡ وَأَثۡقَالࣰا مَّعَ أَثۡقَالِهِمۡۖ وَلَیُسۡءَلُنَّ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ عَمَّا كَانُوا۟ یَفۡتَرُونَ ۝١٣

And surely they shall bear their burdens and bear other burdens besides their own. And surely they shall be questioned on the Day of Resurrection about things they fabricated

walayaḥmilunna athqālahum wa-athqālan maʿa athqālihim walayus'alunna yawma l-qiyāmati ʿammā kānū yaftarūn

2 Noah and Abraham

وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا نُوحًا إِلَىٰ قَوۡمِهِۦ فَلَبِثَ فِیهِمۡ أَلۡفَ سَنَةٍ إِلَّا خَمۡسِینَ عَامࣰا فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱلطُّوفَانُ وَهُمۡ ظَـٰلِمُونَ ۝١٤

And We did send Noah to his people. And he lived among them for a thousand years, save fifty. Then the deluge overtook them, and they were wicked

walaqad arsalnā nūḥan ilā qawmihi falabitha fīhim alfa sanatin illā khamsīna ʿāman fa-akhadhahumu l-ṭūfānu wahum ẓālimūn

فَأَنجَیۡنَـٰهُ وَأَصۡحَـٰبَ ٱلسَّفِینَةِ وَجَعَلۡنَـٰهَاۤ ءَایَةࣰ لِّلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٥

Then We saved him and those in the Ark, and made it a sign for the worlds

fa-anjaynāhu wa-aṣḥāba l-safīnati wajaʿalnāhā āyatan lil'ʿālamīn

وَإِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ إِذۡ قَالَ لِقَوۡمِهِ ٱعۡبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱتَّقُوهُۖ ذَ ٰلِكُمۡ خَیۡرࣱ لَّكُمۡ إِن كُنتُمۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٦

And (We did send) Abraham (to his people) when he told them, "Worship Allah, and fear Him! That is good for you if you but knew."

wa-ib'rāhīma idh qāla liqawmihi uʿ'budū l-laha wa-ittaqūhu dhālikum khayrun lakum in kuntum taʿlamūn

إِنَّمَا تَعۡبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ أَوۡثَـٰنࣰا وَتَخۡلُقُونَ إِفۡكًاۚ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ تَعۡبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ لَا یَمۡلِكُونَ لَكُمۡ رِزۡقࣰا فَٱبۡتَغُوا۟ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرِّزۡقَ وَٱعۡبُدُوهُ وَٱشۡكُرُوا۟ لَهُۥۤۖ إِلَیۡهِ تُرۡجَعُونَ ۝١٧

"You worship mere idols instead of Allah, and you create a falsehood. Indeed, those whom you worship instead of Allah can provide you with nothing! Seek the provision therefore with Allah, worship Him, and give Him thanks. To Him it is that you shall be returned."

innamā taʿbudūna min dūni l-lahi awthānan watakhluqūna if'kan inna alladhīna taʿbudūna min dūni l-lahi lā yamlikūna lakum riz'qan fa-ib'taghū ʿinda l-lahi l-riz'qa wa-uʿ'budūhu wa-ush'kurū lahu ilayhi tur'jaʿūn

وَإِن تُكَذِّبُوا۟ فَقَدۡ كَذَّبَ أُمَمࣱ مِّن قَبۡلِكُمۡۖ وَمَا عَلَى ٱلرَّسُولِ إِلَّا ٱلۡبَلَـٰغُ ٱلۡمُبِینُ ۝١٨

"And if you deny, then communities before you had also denied. And the Messenger is responsible only to deliver the divine Message clearly."

wa-in tukadhibū faqad kadhaba umamun min qablikum wamā ʿalā l-rasūli illā l-balāghu l-mubīn

أَوَ لَمۡ یَرَوۡا۟ كَیۡفَ یُبۡدِئُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡخَلۡقَ ثُمَّ یُعِیدُهُۥۤۚ إِنَّ ذَ ٰلِكَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ یَسِیرࣱ ۝١٩

Do they not see how Allah generates creation and then regenerates it? That is indeed easy for Allah

awalam yaraw kayfa yub'di-u l-lahu l-khalqa thumma yuʿīduhu inna dhālika ʿalā l-lahi yasīru

قُلۡ سِیرُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَٱنظُرُوا۟ كَیۡفَ بَدَأَ ٱلۡخَلۡقَۚ ثُمَّ ٱللَّهُ یُنشِئُ ٱلنَّشۡأَةَ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةَۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ قَدِیرࣱ ۝٢٠

Say, "Travel on the earth and see how He has originated creation. And then Allah shall raise another type of existence. Indeed, Allah can do anything!"

qul sīrū fī l-arḍi fa-unẓurū kayfa bada-a l-khalqa thumma l-lahu yunshi-u l-nashata l-ākhirata inna l-laha ʿalā kulli shayin qadīru

یُعَذِّبُ مَن یَشَاۤءُ وَیَرۡحَمُ مَن یَشَاۤءُۖ وَإِلَیۡهِ تُقۡلَبُونَ ۝٢١

He punishes whom He wills, and shows mercy to whom He wills. And Him you shall be turned to

yuʿadhibu man yashāu wayarḥamu man yashāu wa-ilayhi tuq'labūn

وَمَاۤ أَنتُم بِمُعۡجِزِینَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَا فِی ٱلسَّمَاۤءِۖ وَمَا لَكُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مِن وَلِیࣲّ وَلَا نَصِیرࣲ ۝٢٢

And you can get away neither on the earth nor in the heavens. And, besides Allah, there is none to be close to or to help you

wamā antum bimuʿ'jizīna fī l-arḍi walā fī l-samāi wamā lakum min dūni l-lahi min waliyyin walā naṣīri

3 Abraham and Lot

وَٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ وَلِقَاۤىِٕهِۦۤ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ یَىِٕسُوا۟ مِن رَّحۡمَتِی وَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ لَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِیمࣱ ۝٢٣

Those who suppress the signs of Allah and disbelieve in their meeting with Him, they shall despair of My mercy, and those are the ones for whom shall there be a painful punishment

wa-alladhīna kafarū biāyāti l-lahi waliqāihi ulāika ya-isū min raḥmatī wa-ulāika lahum ʿadhābun alīmu

فَمَا كَانَ جَوَابَ قَوۡمِهِۦۤ إِلَّاۤ أَن قَالُوا۟ ٱقۡتُلُوهُ أَوۡ حَرِّقُوهُ فَأَنجَىٰهُ ٱللَّهُ مِنَ ٱلنَّارِۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٢٤

The response of his (Abraham's) people then was naught but that they said, "Kill him, or put him into fire." Then Allah saved him from the fire. Therein indeed are signs for a people who believe

famā kāna jawāba qawmihi illā an qālū uq'tulūhu aw ḥarriqūhu fa-anjāhu l-lahu mina l-nāri inna fī dhālika laāyātin liqawmin yu'minūn

وَقَالَ إِنَّمَا ٱتَّخَذۡتُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ أَوۡثَـٰنࣰا مَّوَدَّةَ بَیۡنِكُمۡ فِی ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۖ ثُمَّ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ یَكۡفُرُ بَعۡضُكُم بِبَعۡضࣲ وَیَلۡعَنُ بَعۡضُكُم بَعۡضࣰا وَمَأۡوَىٰكُمُ ٱلنَّارُ وَمَا لَكُم مِّن نَّـٰصِرِینَ ۝٢٥

And he (Abraham) said, "You have taken mere idols, instead of Allah, as mutual objects of affection amongst you in the life of this world. Then on the Day of Resurrection you shall deny each other and you shall curse each other. And the Fire shall be your abode. And you shall have none to help you."

waqāla innamā ittakhadhtum min dūni l-lahi awthānan mawaddata baynikum fī l-ḥayati l-dun'yā thumma yawma l-qiyāmati yakfuru baʿḍukum bibaʿḍin wayalʿanu baʿḍukum baʿḍan wamawākumu l-nāru wamā lakum min nāṣirīn

۞ فَءَامَنَ لَهُۥ لُوطࣱۘ وَقَالَ إِنِّی مُهَاجِرٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّیۤۖ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلۡحَكِیمُ ۝٢٦

And Lot believed in him. And he said, "I am indeed migrating to my Lord! He is indeed the One Omnipotent, Wise."

faāmana lahu lūṭun waqāla innī muhājirun ilā rabbī innahu huwa l-ʿazīzu l-ḥakīm

وَوَهَبۡنَا لَهُۥۤ إِسۡحَـٰقَ وَیَعۡقُوبَ وَجَعَلۡنَا فِی ذُرِّیَّتِهِ ٱلنُّبُوَّةَ وَٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُ أَجۡرَهُۥ فِی ٱلدُّنۡیَاۖ وَإِنَّهُۥ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ لَمِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝٢٧

And We bestowed on him Isaac and Jacob, and We placed among his posterity prophethood and the Book, and We granted him his reward in this World, and certainly indeed in the Hereafter he shall be among the righteous

wawahabnā lahu is'ḥāqa wayaʿqūba wajaʿalnā fī dhurriyyatihi l-nubuwata wal-kitāba waātaynāhu ajrahu fī l-dun'yā wa-innahu fī l-ākhirati lamina l-ṣāliḥīn

وَلُوطًا إِذۡ قَالَ لِقَوۡمِهِۦۤ إِنَّكُمۡ لَتَأۡتُونَ ٱلۡفَـٰحِشَةَ مَا سَبَقَكُم بِهَا مِنۡ أَحَدࣲ مِّنَ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٢٨

And Lot! When he said to his people, "You do certainly indeed commit the indecency (homosexuality) which none has committed before you in the Worlds."

walūṭan idh qāla liqawmihi innakum latatūna l-fāḥishata mā sabaqakum bihā min aḥadin mina l-ʿālamīn

أَىِٕنَّكُمۡ لَتَأۡتُونَ ٱلرِّجَالَ وَتَقۡطَعُونَ ٱلسَّبِیلَ وَتَأۡتُونَ فِی نَادِیكُمُ ٱلۡمُنكَرَۖ فَمَا كَانَ جَوَابَ قَوۡمِهِۦۤ إِلَّاۤ أَن قَالُوا۟ ٱئۡتِنَا بِعَذَابِ ٱللَّهِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝٢٩

"You do come to men (for sexual pleasure, instead of to women ), you waylay, and you do forbidden things in your assemblies, do you!?" Then the answer of his people was naught but that they said, "Bring Allah's punishment on us if what you say is true."

a-innakum latatūna l-rijāla wataqṭaʿūna l-sabīla watatūna fī nādīkumu l-munkara famā kāna jawāba qawmihi illā an qālū i'tinā biʿadhābi l-lahi in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn

قَالَ رَبِّ ٱنصُرۡنِی عَلَى ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلۡمُفۡسِدِینَ ۝٣٠

Lot said, "My Lord! Help me against these corrupt people."

qāla rabbi unṣur'nī ʿalā l-qawmi l-muf'sidīn

4 Opposition to Truth ever a Failure

وَلَمَّا جَاۤءَتۡ رُسُلُنَاۤ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ بِٱلۡبُشۡرَىٰ قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّا مُهۡلِكُوۤا۟ أَهۡلِ هَـٰذِهِ ٱلۡقَرۡیَةِۖ إِنَّ أَهۡلَهَا كَانُوا۟ ظَـٰلِمِینَ ۝٣١

And when Our Messengers (angels) came to Abraham with the glad tidings for him (of imminent birth of a son), they said, "We are going to destroy the inhabitants of that locality (to whom Lot was sent). Indeed, the inhabitants thereof have been wicked

walammā jāat rusulunā ib'rāhīma bil-bush'rā qālū innā muh'likū ahli hādhihi l-qaryati inna ahlahā kānū ẓālimīn

قَالَ إِنَّ فِیهَا لُوطࣰاۚ قَالُوا۟ نَحۡنُ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَن فِیهَاۖ لَنُنَجِّیَنَّهُۥ وَأَهۡلَهُۥۤ إِلَّا ٱمۡرَأَتَهُۥ كَانَتۡ مِنَ ٱلۡغَـٰبِرِینَ ۝٣٢

Abraham said, "But Lot lives therein!" The angels said, "We know who live therein. We shall certainly save him and his household except for his wife. She is to be among those left behind."

qāla inna fīhā lūṭan qālū naḥnu aʿlamu biman fīhā lanunajjiyannahu wa-ahlahu illā im'ra-atahu kānat mina l-ghābirīn

وَلَمَّاۤ أَن جَاۤءَتۡ رُسُلُنَا لُوطࣰا سِیۤءَ بِهِمۡ وَضَاقَ بِهِمۡ ذَرۡعࣰاۖ وَقَالُوا۟ لَا تَخَفۡ وَلَا تَحۡزَنۡ إِنَّا مُنَجُّوكَ وَأَهۡلَكَ إِلَّا ٱمۡرَأَتَكَ كَانَتۡ مِنَ ٱلۡغَـٰبِرِینَ ۝٣٣

And when Our Messengers (angels) came to Lot, he was worried about them, and he felt powerless to protect them. And they said, "Fear not, nor grieve. We shall indeed save you and your household except for your wife. She is to be among those left behind

walammā an jāat rusulunā lūṭan sīa bihim waḍāqa bihim dharʿan waqālū lā takhaf walā taḥzan innā munajjūka wa-ahlaka illā im'ra-ataka kānat mina l-ghābirīn

إِنَّا مُنزِلُونَ عَلَىٰۤ أَهۡلِ هَـٰذِهِ ٱلۡقَرۡیَةِ رِجۡزࣰا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَفۡسُقُونَ ۝٣٤

We are indeed going to bring down upon the inhabitants of this city a scourge from the heaven, for they have rebelled against Allah's commandments

innā munzilūna ʿalā ahli hādhihi l-qaryati rij'zan mina l-samāi bimā kānū yafsuqūn

وَلَقَد تَّرَكۡنَا مِنۡهَاۤ ءَایَةَۢ بَیِّنَةࣰ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٣٥

And verily We have left thereof a manifest sign for a people who reflect

walaqad taraknā min'hā āyatan bayyinatan liqawmin yaʿqilūn

وَإِلَىٰ مَدۡیَنَ أَخَاهُمۡ شُعَیۡبࣰا فَقَالَ یَـٰقَوۡمِ ٱعۡبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱرۡجُوا۟ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ ٱلۡءَاخِرَ وَلَا تَعۡثَوۡا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مُفۡسِدِینَ ۝٣٦

And to Midian (people) We sent their brother, Shu'aib. He said, "O my people! Worship Allah, prepare yourselves for the Last Day, and do no harm on the earth wickedly."

wa-ilā madyana akhāhum shuʿayban faqāla yāqawmi uʿ'budū l-laha wa-ir'jū l-yawma l-ākhira walā taʿthaw fī l-arḍi muf'sidīn

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَتۡهُمُ ٱلرَّجۡفَةُ فَأَصۡبَحُوا۟ فِی دَارِهِمۡ جَـٰثِمِینَ ۝٣٧

And they disbelieved him! And then a violent convulsion shook them, and they lay buried in the debris of their homes

fakadhabūhu fa-akhadhathumu l-rajfatu fa-aṣbaḥū fī dārihim jāthimīn

وَعَادࣰا وَثَمُودَا۟ وَقَد تَّبَیَّنَ لَكُم مِّن مَّسَـٰكِنِهِمۡۖ وَزَیَّنَ لَهُمُ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُ أَعۡمَـٰلَهُمۡ فَصَدَّهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلسَّبِیلِ وَكَانُوا۟ مُسۡتَبۡصِرِینَ ۝٣٨

And (the peoples of) AAad and Thamood! Verily, their destruction is apparent to you from their dwellings. The Satan made their deeds look good to them, and thus hindered them from the Right Path that was within their sight

waʿādan wathamūdā waqad tabayyana lakum min masākinihim wazayyana lahumu l-shayṭānu aʿmālahum faṣaddahum ʿani l-sabīli wakānū mus'tabṣirīn

وَقَـٰرُونَ وَفِرۡعَوۡنَ وَهَـٰمَـٰنَۖ وَلَقَدۡ جَاۤءَهُم مُّوسَىٰ بِٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِ فَٱسۡتَكۡبَرُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ سَـٰبِقِینَ ۝٣٩

And Korah (Qaroon) and Pharaoh and Haman! Verily, Moses came to them with the clear signs. Yet they behaved arrogantly in the land. But they could not get ahead

waqārūna wafir'ʿawna wahāmāna walaqad jāahum mūsā bil-bayināti fa-is'takbarū fī l-arḍi wamā kānū sābiqīn

فَكُلًّا أَخَذۡنَا بِذَنۢبِهِۦۖ فَمِنۡهُم مَّنۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ حَاصِبࣰا وَمِنۡهُم مَّنۡ أَخَذَتۡهُ ٱلصَّیۡحَةُ وَمِنۡهُم مَّنۡ خَسَفۡنَا بِهِ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَمِنۡهُم مَّنۡ أَغۡرَقۡنَاۚ وَمَا كَانَ ٱللَّهُ لِیَظۡلِمَهُمۡ وَلَـٰكِن كَانُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَهُمۡ یَظۡلِمُونَ ۝٤٠

We then got hold of everyone for his crime. Of them were some on whom We sent a violent storm; and of them were some who were overtaken by a deafening blast; and of them were some with whom We sank the earth; and of them were some whom We drowned. And Allah wronged them not, but they wronged themselves

fakullan akhadhnā bidhanbihi famin'hum man arsalnā ʿalayhi ḥāṣiban wamin'hum man akhadhathu l-ṣayḥatu wamin'hum man khasafnā bihi l-arḍa wamin'hum man aghraqnā wamā kāna l-lahu liyaẓlimahum walākin kānū anfusahum yaẓlimūn

مَثَلُ ٱلَّذِینَ ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ أَوۡلِیَاۤءَ كَمَثَلِ ٱلۡعَنكَبُوتِ ٱتَّخَذَتۡ بَیۡتࣰاۖ وَإِنَّ أَوۡهَنَ ٱلۡبُیُوتِ لَبَیۡتُ ٱلۡعَنكَبُوتِۚ لَوۡ كَانُوا۟ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٤١

Those taking patrons other than Allah are like the spider building a web of a house. And, certainly indeed, the frailest of all houses is the spider's house — if they but knew

mathalu alladhīna ittakhadhū min dūni l-lahi awliyāa kamathali l-ʿankabūti ittakhadhat baytan wa-inna awhana l-buyūti labaytu l-ʿankabūti law kānū yaʿlamūn

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یَعۡلَمُ مَا یَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِهِۦ مِن شَیۡءࣲۚ وَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلۡحَكِیمُ ۝٤٢

Allah does indeed know anything they invoke besides Him (to be as weak as the spider's web). And He is the One omnipotent, wise

inna l-laha yaʿlamu mā yadʿūna min dūnihi min shayin wahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-ḥakīm

وَتِلۡكَ ٱلۡأَمۡثَـٰلُ نَضۡرِبُهَا لِلنَّاسِۖ وَمَا یَعۡقِلُهَاۤ إِلَّا ٱلۡعَـٰلِمُونَ ۝٤٣

And We give these examples for mankind. And none, but the knowledgeable, understandh them

watil'ka l-amthālu naḍribuhā lilnnāsi wamā yaʿqiluhā illā l-ʿālimūn

خَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ بِٱلۡحَقِّۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰ لِّلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٤٤

Allah hath created the heavens and the earth in truth. Certainly indeed, therein is a sign for the believers

khalaqa l-lahu l-samāwāti wal-arḍa bil-ḥaqi inna fī dhālika laāyatan lil'mu'minīn

5 Qur'an is a Purifier

ٱتۡلُ مَاۤ أُوحِیَ إِلَیۡكَ مِنَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ وَأَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَۖ إِنَّ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ تَنۡهَىٰ عَنِ ٱلۡفَحۡشَاۤءِ وَٱلۡمُنكَرِۗ وَلَذِكۡرُ ٱللَّهِ أَكۡبَرُۗ وَٱللَّهُ یَعۡلَمُ مَا تَصۡنَعُونَ ۝٤٥

"Recite what is revealed to you of the Book and establish the prayer !" The prayer indeedh prevents man from doing indecent and forbidden things: and surely remembrance of Allah is great. And Allah knows what you do

ut'lu mā ūḥiya ilayka mina l-kitābi wa-aqimi l-ṣalata inna l-ṣalata tanhā ʿani l-faḥshāi wal-munkari waladhik'ru l-lahi akbaru wal-lahu yaʿlamu mā taṣnaʿūn

۞ وَلَا تُجَـٰدِلُوۤا۟ أَهۡلَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ إِلَّا بِٱلَّتِی هِیَ أَحۡسَنُ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوا۟ مِنۡهُمۡۖ وَقُولُوۤا۟ ءَامَنَّا بِٱلَّذِیۤ أُنزِلَ إِلَیۡنَا وَأُنزِلَ إِلَیۡكُمۡ وَإِلَـٰهُنَا وَإِلَـٰهُكُمۡ وَ ٰحِدࣱ وَنَحۡنُ لَهُۥ مُسۡلِمُونَ ۝٤٦

And argue not with the people of the Book but in the best manner, except with those of them who are unjust and wicked. And say, "We believe in that which has been sent down to us and in that which hath been sent down to you. The One we ought to worship and the One you ought to worship are One and the Same Being. And to that Being we submit."

walā tujādilū ahla l-kitābi illā bi-allatī hiya aḥsanu illā alladhīna ẓalamū min'hum waqūlū āmannā bi-alladhī unzila ilaynā wa-unzila ilaykum wa-ilāhunā wa-ilāhukum wāḥidun wanaḥnu lahu mus'limūn

وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ أَنزَلۡنَاۤ إِلَیۡكَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَۚ فَٱلَّذِینَ ءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُمُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِهِۦۖ وَمِنۡ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ مَن یُؤۡمِنُ بِهِۦۚ وَمَا یَجۡحَدُ بِءَایَـٰتِنَاۤ إِلَّا ٱلۡكَـٰفِرُونَ ۝٤٧

And just as (We had sent down Books on Prophets like Jesus and Moses earlier) We have sent down to you the Book (Qur'aan). So those to whom We have given the Book believe therein, and of these (others) too some believe therein. And none dispute Our Verses/signs save those who suppress the Truth

wakadhālika anzalnā ilayka l-kitāba fa-alladhīna ātaynāhumu l-kitāba yu'minūna bihi wamin hāulāi man yu'minu bihi wamā yajḥadu biāyātinā illā l-kāfirūn

وَمَا كُنتَ تَتۡلُوا۟ مِن قَبۡلِهِۦ مِن كِتَـٰبࣲ وَلَا تَخُطُّهُۥ بِیَمِینِكَۖ إِذࣰا لَّٱرۡتَابَ ٱلۡمُبۡطِلُونَ ۝٤٨

And you (Prophet Muhammad) have not read any book before it (Qur'aan), nor have you written anything in your own hand. Had you been so literate, the followers of falsehood might have some reason to doubt (the divine authorship of the Qur'aan)

wamā kunta tatlū min qablihi min kitābin walā takhuṭṭuhu biyamīnika idhan la-ir'tāba l-mub'ṭilūn

بَلۡ هُوَ ءَایَـٰتُۢ بَیِّنَـٰتࣱ فِی صُدُورِ ٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡعِلۡمَۚ وَمَا یَجۡحَدُ بِءَایَـٰتِنَاۤ إِلَّا ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ ۝٤٩

But it (Qur'aan) in itself is embodiment of manifest signs in the minds of those given knowledge. And none dispute Our Verses/signs save those that are wicked

bal huwa āyātun bayyinātun fī ṣudūri alladhīna ūtū l-ʿil'ma wamā yajḥadu biāyātinā illā l-ẓālimūn

وَقَالُوا۟ لَوۡلَاۤ أُنزِلَ عَلَیۡهِ ءَایَـٰتࣱ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦۚ قُلۡ إِنَّمَا ٱلۡءَایَـٰتُ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَإِنَّمَاۤ أَنَا۠ نَذِیرࣱ مُّبِینٌ ۝٥٠

And they say, "Why are no miracles sent down upon him from his Lord?" Say, "The miracles are with Allah alone, and I am but one who gives clear warnings!"

waqālū lawlā unzila ʿalayhi āyātun min rabbihi qul innamā l-āyātu ʿinda l-lahi wa-innamā anā nadhīrun mubīnu

أَوَ لَمۡ یَكۡفِهِمۡ أَنَّاۤ أَنزَلۡنَا عَلَیۡكَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ یُتۡلَىٰ عَلَیۡهِمۡۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَرَحۡمَةࣰ وَذِكۡرَىٰ لِقَوۡمࣲ یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٥١

Is it not sufficient for them that We have sent down the Book (Qur'aan) to you that is recited to them? Therein, certainly indeed, is mercy and admonition for people who believe

awalam yakfihim annā anzalnā ʿalayka l-kitāba yut'lā ʿalayhim inna fī dhālika laraḥmatan wadhik'rā liqawmin yu'minūn

6 Warning and Consolation

قُلۡ كَفَىٰ بِٱللَّهِ بَیۡنِی وَبَیۡنَكُمۡ شَهِیدࣰاۖ یَعۡلَمُ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۗ وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ بِٱلۡبَـٰطِلِ وَكَفَرُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرُونَ ۝٥٢

Say, "It is sufficient that Allah is witness between me and you. He knows whatsoever is there in the heavens and the earth. And those who believe in falsehood and disbelieve in Allah, it is they who shall be the ones doomed!"

qul kafā bil-lahi baynī wabaynakum shahīdan yaʿlamu mā fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wa-alladhīna āmanū bil-bāṭili wakafarū bil-lahi ulāika humu l-khāsirūn

وَیَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَكَ بِٱلۡعَذَابِ وَلَوۡلَاۤ أَجَلࣱ مُّسَمࣰّى لَّجَاۤءَهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُۚ وَلَیَأۡتِیَنَّهُم بَغۡتَةࣰ وَهُمۡ لَا یَشۡعُرُونَ ۝٥٣

And they ask you to hasten the punishment. And had not there been a term appointed, the punishment would surely have come to them. And surely it shall come upon them suddenly, unawares

wayastaʿjilūnaka bil-ʿadhābi walawlā ajalun musamman lajāahumu l-ʿadhābu walayatiyannahum baghtatan wahum lā yashʿurūn

یَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَكَ بِٱلۡعَذَابِ وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمُحِیطَةُۢ بِٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝٥٤

They ask you to hasten the punishment. And, certainly indeed, Hell is surrounding the suppressors of Truth

yastaʿjilūnaka bil-ʿadhābi wa-inna jahannama lamuḥīṭatun bil-kāfirīn

یَوۡمَ یَغۡشَىٰهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُ مِن فَوۡقِهِمۡ وَمِن تَحۡتِ أَرۡجُلِهِمۡ وَیَقُولُ ذُوقُوا۟ مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٥٥

The Day when the punishment shall cover them from above them and from underneath their feet. And He shall say, "Taste what you have been doing!"

yawma yaghshāhumu l-ʿadhābu min fawqihim wamin taḥti arjulihim wayaqūlu dhūqū mā kuntum taʿmalūn

یَـٰعِبَادِیَ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِنَّ أَرۡضِی وَ ٰسِعَةࣱ فَإِیَّـٰیَ فَٱعۡبُدُونِ ۝٥٦

O my believing worshippers! My earth is indeed wide. So worship Me alone (and succumb to no force compelling you to worship others)

yāʿibādiya alladhīna āmanū inna arḍī wāsiʿatun fa-iyyāya fa-uʿ'budūn

كُلُّ نَفۡسࣲ ذَاۤىِٕقَةُ ٱلۡمَوۡتِۖ ثُمَّ إِلَیۡنَا تُرۡجَعُونَ ۝٥٧

Everyone shall taste death. Then to Us you shall all be returned

kullu nafsin dhāiqatu l-mawti thumma ilaynā tur'jaʿūn

وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ لَنُبَوِّئَنَّهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡجَنَّةِ غُرَفࣰا تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَاۚ نِعۡمَ أَجۡرُ ٱلۡعَـٰمِلِینَ ۝٥٨

And We shall surely settle those who believe and do righteous deeds in lofty mansions of the Garden beneath which the rivers flow. They shall live therein forever — excellent reward for those who do good deeds

wa-alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti lanubawwi-annahum mina l-janati ghurafan tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru khālidīna fīhā niʿ'ma ajru l-ʿāmilīn

ٱلَّذِینَ صَبَرُوا۟ وَعَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمۡ یَتَوَكَّلُونَ ۝٥٩

(The excellent reward is) for those who are patient and put their trust in their Lord

alladhīna ṣabarū waʿalā rabbihim yatawakkalūn

وَكَأَیِّن مِّن دَاۤبَّةࣲ لَّا تَحۡمِلُ رِزۡقَهَا ٱللَّهُ یَرۡزُقُهَا وَإِیَّاكُمۡۚ وَهُوَ ٱلسَّمِیعُ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ۝٦٠

And how many a creature there is that carries not its provision! Allah provides for it and for you. And He is the One Who always listens, knows

waka-ayyin min dābbatin lā taḥmilu riz'qahā l-lahu yarzuquhā wa-iyyākum wahuwa l-samīʿu l-ʿalīm

وَلَىِٕن سَأَلۡتَهُم مَّنۡ خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَسَخَّرَ ٱلشَّمۡسَ وَٱلۡقَمَرَ لَیَقُولُنَّ ٱللَّهُۖ فَأَنَّىٰ یُؤۡفَكُونَ ۝٦١

And were you to ask them, "Who has created the heavens and the earth and made the sun and the moon subservient?" they would surely say, "Allah." How then are they deluded

wala-in sa-altahum man khalaqa l-samāwāti wal-arḍa wasakhara l-shamsa wal-qamara layaqūlunna l-lahu fa-annā yu'fakūn

ٱللَّهُ یَبۡسُطُ ٱلرِّزۡقَ لِمَن یَشَاۤءُ مِنۡ عِبَادِهِۦ وَیَقۡدِرُ لَهُۥۤۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِكُلِّ شَیۡءٍ عَلِیمࣱ ۝٦٢

Allah gives the provision for living in ample measure to whom He wills of His subjects and restricts it to whom He wills. Allah is indeed aware of everything

al-lahu yabsuṭu l-riz'qa liman yashāu min ʿibādihi wayaqdiru lahu inna l-laha bikulli shayin ʿalīmu

وَلَىِٕن سَأَلۡتَهُم مَّن نَّزَّلَ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مَاۤءࣰ فَأَحۡیَا بِهِ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَوۡتِهَا لَیَقُولُنَّ ٱللَّهُۚ قُلِ ٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِۚ بَلۡ أَكۡثَرُهُمۡ لَا یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٦٣

And were you to ask them, "Who sends down water from the heaven, and therewith brings the earth back to life after its death?" they would surely say, "Allah." Say, "All praise to Allah!" But most of them reflect not

wala-in sa-altahum man nazzala mina l-samāi māan fa-aḥyā bihi l-arḍa min baʿdi mawtihā layaqūlunna l-lahu quli l-ḥamdu lillahi bal aktharuhum lā yaʿqilūn

7 Triumph of the Faithful

وَمَا هَـٰذِهِ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۤ إِلَّا لَهۡوࣱ وَلَعِبࣱۚ وَإِنَّ ٱلدَّارَ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةَ لَهِیَ ٱلۡحَیَوَانُۘ لَوۡ كَانُوا۟ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٦٤

And this life of the world is nothing but pastime and play. And the home of the Hereafter — that is life indeed, if they but knew

wamā hādhihi l-ḥayatu l-dun'yā illā lahwun walaʿibun wa-inna l-dāra l-ākhirata lahiya l-ḥayawānu law kānū yaʿlamūn

فَإِذَا رَكِبُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡفُلۡكِ دَعَوُا۟ ٱللَّهَ مُخۡلِصِینَ لَهُ ٱلدِّینَ فَلَمَّا نَجَّىٰهُمۡ إِلَى ٱلۡبَرِّ إِذَا هُمۡ یُشۡرِكُونَ ۝٦٥

And when they board a vessel they pray exclusively to Allah as if they keep their way of life purely for Him. Then when He delivers them safely on the land, they pray to others besides Him

fa-idhā rakibū fī l-ful'ki daʿawū l-laha mukh'liṣīna lahu l-dīna falammā najjāhum ilā l-bari idhā hum yush'rikūn

لِیَكۡفُرُوا۟ بِمَاۤ ءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُمۡ وَلِیَتَمَتَّعُوا۟ۚ فَسَوۡفَ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٦٦

So that they remain ungrateful despite what We have given to them, and so that they enjoy themselves. Soon they shall come to know

liyakfurū bimā ātaynāhum waliyatamattaʿū fasawfa yaʿlamūn

أَوَ لَمۡ یَرَوۡا۟ أَنَّا جَعَلۡنَا حَرَمًا ءَامِنࣰا وَیُتَخَطَّفُ ٱلنَّاسُ مِنۡ حَوۡلِهِمۡۚ أَفَبِٱلۡبَـٰطِلِ یُؤۡمِنُونَ وَبِنِعۡمَةِ ٱللَّهِ یَكۡفُرُونَ ۝٦٧

Do they not see that We have made it (Makkah) into a sanctuary of peace, while men are being snatched away from around them? Do they then believe in falsehood, and turn unfrateful to Allah's favours!

awalam yaraw annā jaʿalnā ḥaraman āminan wayutakhaṭṭafu l-nāsu min ḥawlihim afabil-bāṭili yu'minūna wabiniʿ'mati l-lahi yakfurūn

وَمَنۡ أَظۡلَمُ مِمَّنِ ٱفۡتَرَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًا أَوۡ كَذَّبَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ لَمَّا جَاۤءَهُۥۤۚ أَلَیۡسَ فِی جَهَنَّمَ مَثۡوࣰى لِّلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝٦٨

And who does a greater wrong than he who concocts a lie against Allah or rejects the truth when it comes to him? Do not the supprssors of Truth deserve an abode in Hell

waman aẓlamu mimmani if'tarā ʿalā l-lahi kadhiban aw kadhaba bil-ḥaqi lammā jāahu alaysa fī jahannama mathwan lil'kāfirīn

وَٱلَّذِینَ جَـٰهَدُوا۟ فِینَا لَنَهۡدِیَنَّهُمۡ سُبُلَنَاۚ وَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَمَعَ ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝٦٩

And those who strive hard for us, We shall surely show them Our paths. And Allah surely indeed is with those who perform their duties well

wa-alladhīna jāhadū fīnā lanahdiyannahum subulanā wa-inna l-laha lamaʿa l-muḥ'sinīn
