1 Trials purify

۞ الۤمۤ ۝١

The Study Quran

أَحَسِبَ ٱلنَّاسُ أَن یُتۡرَكُوۤا۟ أَن یَقُولُوۤا۟ ءَامَنَّا وَهُمۡ لَا یُفۡتَنُونَ ۝٢

The Study Quran

Does mankind suppose that they will be left to say, “We believe,” and that they will not be tried

aḥasiba l-nāsu an yut'rakū an yaqūlū āmannā wahum lā yuf'tanūn

وَلَقَدۡ فَتَنَّا ٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡۖ فَلَیَعۡلَمَنَّ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِینَ صَدَقُوا۟ وَلَیَعۡلَمَنَّ ٱلۡكَـٰذِبِینَ ۝٣

The Study Quran

though We have indeed tried those who were before them? Surely God knows those who are truthful, and surely He knows the liars

walaqad fatannā alladhīna min qablihim falayaʿlamanna l-lahu alladhīna ṣadaqū walayaʿlamanna l-kādhibīn

أَمۡ حَسِبَ ٱلَّذِینَ یَعۡمَلُونَ ٱلسَّیِّءَاتِ أَن یَسۡبِقُونَاۚ سَاۤءَ مَا یَحۡكُمُونَ ۝٤

The Study Quran

Or do those who commit evil deeds suppose that they will outstrip Us? Evil indeed is the judgment they make

am ḥasiba alladhīna yaʿmalūna l-sayiāti an yasbiqūnā sāa mā yaḥkumūn

مَن كَانَ یَرۡجُوا۟ لِقَاۤءَ ٱللَّهِ فَإِنَّ أَجَلَ ٱللَّهِ لَءَاتࣲۚ وَهُوَ ٱلسَّمِیعُ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ۝٥

The Study Quran

Whosoever hopes for the meeting with God, God’s term is coming. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing

man kāna yarjū liqāa l-lahi fa-inna ajala l-lahi laātin wahuwa l-samīʿu l-ʿalīm

وَمَن جَـٰهَدَ فَإِنَّمَا یُجَـٰهِدُ لِنَفۡسِهِۦۤۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَغَنِیٌّ عَنِ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٦

The Study Quran

And whosoever strives, strives only for himself. Truly God is beyond need of the worlds

waman jāhada fa-innamā yujāhidu linafsihi inna l-laha laghaniyyun ʿani l-ʿālamīn

وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ لَنُكَفِّرَنَّ عَنۡهُمۡ سَیِّءَاتِهِمۡ وَلَنَجۡزِیَنَّهُمۡ أَحۡسَنَ ٱلَّذِی كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٧

The Study Quran

And those who believe and perform righteous deeds, We shall surely absolve them of their evil deeds, and We shall surely recompense them according to the best of that which they used to do

wa-alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti lanukaffiranna ʿanhum sayyiātihim walanajziyannahum aḥsana alladhī kānū yaʿmalūn

وَوَصَّیۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ بِوَ ٰلِدَیۡهِ حُسۡنࣰاۖ وَإِن جَـٰهَدَاكَ لِتُشۡرِكَ بِی مَا لَیۡسَ لَكَ بِهِۦ عِلۡمࣱ فَلَا تُطِعۡهُمَاۤۚ إِلَیَّ مَرۡجِعُكُمۡ فَأُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٨

The Study Quran

And We have enjoined man to be good unto his parents. But if they urge thee to ascribe as partner unto Me that whereof thou hast no knowledge, then obey them not. Unto Me is your return, whereupon I shall inform you of that which you used to do

wawaṣṣaynā l-insāna biwālidayhi ḥus'nan wa-in jāhadāka litush'rika bī mā laysa laka bihi ʿil'mun falā tuṭiʿ'humā ilayya marjiʿukum fa-unabbi-ukum bimā kuntum taʿmalūn

وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ لَنُدۡخِلَنَّهُمۡ فِی ٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝٩

The Study Quran

And those who believe and perform righteous deeds, We shall surely cause them to enter among the righteous

wa-alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti lanud'khilannahum fī l-ṣāliḥīn

وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن یَقُولُ ءَامَنَّا بِٱللَّهِ فَإِذَاۤ أُوذِیَ فِی ٱللَّهِ جَعَلَ فِتۡنَةَ ٱلنَّاسِ كَعَذَابِ ٱللَّهِۖ وَلَىِٕن جَاۤءَ نَصۡرࣱ مِّن رَّبِّكَ لَیَقُولُنَّ إِنَّا كُنَّا مَعَكُمۡۚ أَوَ لَیۡسَ ٱللَّهُ بِأَعۡلَمَ بِمَا فِی صُدُورِ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٠

The Study Quran

Among mankind are those who say, “We believe in God”; but if he is harmed for the sake of God, he takes persecution from men to be as God’s Punishment. Yet if help comes from thy Lord, he will surely say, “We were indeed with you.” Does God not know best what lies within the breasts of all creatures

wamina l-nāsi man yaqūlu āmannā bil-lahi fa-idhā ūdhiya fī l-lahi jaʿala fit'nata l-nāsi kaʿadhābi l-lahi wala-in jāa naṣrun min rabbika layaqūlunna innā kunnā maʿakum awalaysa l-lahu bi-aʿlama bimā fī ṣudūri l-ʿālamīn

وَلَیَعۡلَمَنَّ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَلَیَعۡلَمَنَّ ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقِینَ ۝١١

The Study Quran

Surely God knows those who believe, and surely He knows the hypocrites

walayaʿlamanna l-lahu alladhīna āmanū walayaʿlamanna l-munāfiqīn

وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱتَّبِعُوا۟ سَبِیلَنَا وَلۡنَحۡمِلۡ خَطَـٰیَـٰكُمۡ وَمَا هُم بِحَـٰمِلِینَ مِنۡ خَطَـٰیَـٰهُم مِّن شَیۡءٍۖ إِنَّهُمۡ لَكَـٰذِبُونَ ۝١٢

The Study Quran

Those who disbelieve say to those who believe, “Follow our path and we shall bear your sins.” But they bear not aught of their sins. Truly they are liars

waqāla alladhīna kafarū lilladhīna āmanū ittabiʿū sabīlanā walnaḥmil khaṭāyākum wamā hum biḥāmilīna min khaṭāyāhum min shayin innahum lakādhibūn

وَلَیَحۡمِلُنَّ أَثۡقَالَهُمۡ وَأَثۡقَالࣰا مَّعَ أَثۡقَالِهِمۡۖ وَلَیُسۡءَلُنَّ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ عَمَّا كَانُوا۟ یَفۡتَرُونَ ۝١٣

The Study Quran

Surely they will bear their own burdens, and others’ burdens along with their own, and on the Day of Resurrection they will surely be questioned concerning that which they used to fabricate

walayaḥmilunna athqālahum wa-athqālan maʿa athqālihim walayus'alunna yawma l-qiyāmati ʿammā kānū yaftarūn

2 Noah and Abraham

وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا نُوحًا إِلَىٰ قَوۡمِهِۦ فَلَبِثَ فِیهِمۡ أَلۡفَ سَنَةٍ إِلَّا خَمۡسِینَ عَامࣰا فَأَخَذَهُمُ ٱلطُّوفَانُ وَهُمۡ ظَـٰلِمُونَ ۝١٤

The Study Quran

And indeed We sent Noah unto his people and he remained among them a thousand years, less fifty; and the flood seized them, for they were wrongdoers

walaqad arsalnā nūḥan ilā qawmihi falabitha fīhim alfa sanatin illā khamsīna ʿāman fa-akhadhahumu l-ṭūfānu wahum ẓālimūn

فَأَنجَیۡنَـٰهُ وَأَصۡحَـٰبَ ٱلسَّفِینَةِ وَجَعَلۡنَـٰهَاۤ ءَایَةࣰ لِّلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝١٥

The Study Quran

Then We saved him and the companions of the ship, and We made it a sign for the worlds

fa-anjaynāhu wa-aṣḥāba l-safīnati wajaʿalnāhā āyatan lil'ʿālamīn

وَإِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ إِذۡ قَالَ لِقَوۡمِهِ ٱعۡبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱتَّقُوهُۖ ذَ ٰلِكُمۡ خَیۡرࣱ لَّكُمۡ إِن كُنتُمۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٦

The Study Quran

And [We sent] Abraham, when he said to his people, “Worship God and reverence Him. That is better for you, if you but knew

wa-ib'rāhīma idh qāla liqawmihi uʿ'budū l-laha wa-ittaqūhu dhālikum khayrun lakum in kuntum taʿlamūn

إِنَّمَا تَعۡبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ أَوۡثَـٰنࣰا وَتَخۡلُقُونَ إِفۡكًاۚ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ تَعۡبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ لَا یَمۡلِكُونَ لَكُمۡ رِزۡقࣰا فَٱبۡتَغُوا۟ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرِّزۡقَ وَٱعۡبُدُوهُ وَٱشۡكُرُوا۟ لَهُۥۤۖ إِلَیۡهِ تُرۡجَعُونَ ۝١٧

The Study Quran

You only worship idols apart from God, and you only create perversion. Truly those whom you worship apart from God have no power over what provision may come to you. So seek your provision with God, worship Him, and be thankful to Him; unto Him shall you be returned

innamā taʿbudūna min dūni l-lahi awthānan watakhluqūna if'kan inna alladhīna taʿbudūna min dūni l-lahi lā yamlikūna lakum riz'qan fa-ib'taghū ʿinda l-lahi l-riz'qa wa-uʿ'budūhu wa-ush'kurū lahu ilayhi tur'jaʿūn

وَإِن تُكَذِّبُوا۟ فَقَدۡ كَذَّبَ أُمَمࣱ مِّن قَبۡلِكُمۡۖ وَمَا عَلَى ٱلرَّسُولِ إِلَّا ٱلۡبَلَـٰغُ ٱلۡمُبِینُ ۝١٨

The Study Quran

But if you deny, then communities have certainly denied before you; and naught is incumbent upon the Messenger but the clear proclamation.

wa-in tukadhibū faqad kadhaba umamun min qablikum wamā ʿalā l-rasūli illā l-balāghu l-mubīn

أَوَ لَمۡ یَرَوۡا۟ كَیۡفَ یُبۡدِئُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡخَلۡقَ ثُمَّ یُعِیدُهُۥۤۚ إِنَّ ذَ ٰلِكَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ یَسِیرࣱ ۝١٩

The Study Quran

Have they not considered how God originates creation, then brings it back? Truly that is easy for God

awalam yaraw kayfa yub'di-u l-lahu l-khalqa thumma yuʿīduhu inna dhālika ʿalā l-lahi yasīru

قُلۡ سِیرُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَٱنظُرُوا۟ كَیۡفَ بَدَأَ ٱلۡخَلۡقَۚ ثُمَّ ٱللَّهُ یُنشِئُ ٱلنَّشۡأَةَ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةَۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ قَدِیرࣱ ۝٢٠

The Study Quran

Say, “Journey upon the earth and observe how He originated creation. Then God shall bring the next genesis into being. Truly God is Powerful over all things.

qul sīrū fī l-arḍi fa-unẓurū kayfa bada-a l-khalqa thumma l-lahu yunshi-u l-nashata l-ākhirata inna l-laha ʿalā kulli shayin qadīru

یُعَذِّبُ مَن یَشَاۤءُ وَیَرۡحَمُ مَن یَشَاۤءُۖ وَإِلَیۡهِ تُقۡلَبُونَ ۝٢١

The Study Quran

He punishes whomsoever He will and has mercy upon whomsoever He will, and unto Him will you be returned

yuʿadhibu man yashāu wayarḥamu man yashāu wa-ilayhi tuq'labūn

وَمَاۤ أَنتُم بِمُعۡجِزِینَ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَا فِی ٱلسَّمَاۤءِۖ وَمَا لَكُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ مِن وَلِیࣲّ وَلَا نَصِیرࣲ ۝٢٢

The Study Quran

You thwart not on earth, nor in Heaven; and apart from God you have no protector or helper

wamā antum bimuʿ'jizīna fī l-arḍi walā fī l-samāi wamā lakum min dūni l-lahi min waliyyin walā naṣīri

3 Abraham and Lot

وَٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ وَلِقَاۤىِٕهِۦۤ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ یَىِٕسُوا۟ مِن رَّحۡمَتِی وَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ لَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِیمࣱ ۝٢٣

The Study Quran

Those who disbelieve in God’s signs and in the meeting with Him, they despair of My Mercy, and for them there shall be a painful punishment

wa-alladhīna kafarū biāyāti l-lahi waliqāihi ulāika ya-isū min raḥmatī wa-ulāika lahum ʿadhābun alīmu

فَمَا كَانَ جَوَابَ قَوۡمِهِۦۤ إِلَّاۤ أَن قَالُوا۟ ٱقۡتُلُوهُ أَوۡ حَرِّقُوهُ فَأَنجَىٰهُ ٱللَّهُ مِنَ ٱلنَّارِۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٢٤

The Study Quran

Yet the answer of his people was but to say, “Slay him, or burn him!” Then God saved him from the fire. Truly in that are signs for a people who believe

famā kāna jawāba qawmihi illā an qālū uq'tulūhu aw ḥarriqūhu fa-anjāhu l-lahu mina l-nāri inna fī dhālika laāyātin liqawmin yu'minūn

وَقَالَ إِنَّمَا ٱتَّخَذۡتُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ أَوۡثَـٰنࣰا مَّوَدَّةَ بَیۡنِكُمۡ فِی ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۖ ثُمَّ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِ یَكۡفُرُ بَعۡضُكُم بِبَعۡضࣲ وَیَلۡعَنُ بَعۡضُكُم بَعۡضࣰا وَمَأۡوَىٰكُمُ ٱلنَّارُ وَمَا لَكُم مِّن نَّـٰصِرِینَ ۝٢٥

The Study Quran

And Abraham said, “You have taken idols apart from God on account of affection between you in the life of this world. Then on the Day of Resurrection you will disown one another, and you will curse one another; your refuge will be the Fire, and you will have no helpers.

waqāla innamā ittakhadhtum min dūni l-lahi awthānan mawaddata baynikum fī l-ḥayati l-dun'yā thumma yawma l-qiyāmati yakfuru baʿḍukum bibaʿḍin wayalʿanu baʿḍukum baʿḍan wamawākumu l-nāru wamā lakum min nāṣirīn

۞ فَءَامَنَ لَهُۥ لُوطࣱۘ وَقَالَ إِنِّی مُهَاجِرٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّیۤۖ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلۡحَكِیمُ ۝٢٦

The Study Quran

And Lot believed him and said, “Truly I am fleeing unto my Lord. Truly He is the Mighty, the Wise.

faāmana lahu lūṭun waqāla innī muhājirun ilā rabbī innahu huwa l-ʿazīzu l-ḥakīm

وَوَهَبۡنَا لَهُۥۤ إِسۡحَـٰقَ وَیَعۡقُوبَ وَجَعَلۡنَا فِی ذُرِّیَّتِهِ ٱلنُّبُوَّةَ وَٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُ أَجۡرَهُۥ فِی ٱلدُّنۡیَاۖ وَإِنَّهُۥ فِی ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ لَمِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝٢٧

The Study Quran

And We bestowed upon him Isaac and Jacob, and We established prophethood and scripture among his progeny. We gave him his reward in this world, and in the Hereafter he shall truly be among the righteous

wawahabnā lahu is'ḥāqa wayaʿqūba wajaʿalnā fī dhurriyyatihi l-nubuwata wal-kitāba waātaynāhu ajrahu fī l-dun'yā wa-innahu fī l-ākhirati lamina l-ṣāliḥīn

وَلُوطًا إِذۡ قَالَ لِقَوۡمِهِۦۤ إِنَّكُمۡ لَتَأۡتُونَ ٱلۡفَـٰحِشَةَ مَا سَبَقَكُم بِهَا مِنۡ أَحَدࣲ مِّنَ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٢٨

The Study Quran

And [We sent] Lot, when he said to his people, “Truly you commit indecency such as none in the worlds committed before you

walūṭan idh qāla liqawmihi innakum latatūna l-fāḥishata mā sabaqakum bihā min aḥadin mina l-ʿālamīn

أَىِٕنَّكُمۡ لَتَأۡتُونَ ٱلرِّجَالَ وَتَقۡطَعُونَ ٱلسَّبِیلَ وَتَأۡتُونَ فِی نَادِیكُمُ ٱلۡمُنكَرَۖ فَمَا كَانَ جَوَابَ قَوۡمِهِۦۤ إِلَّاۤ أَن قَالُوا۟ ٱئۡتِنَا بِعَذَابِ ٱللَّهِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِینَ ۝٢٩

The Study Quran

What! Do you come unto men, cut off the way, and commit reprehensible deeds in your gatherings?” Yet the answer of his people was but to say, “Bring us God’s Punishment, if you are among the truthful.

a-innakum latatūna l-rijāla wataqṭaʿūna l-sabīla watatūna fī nādīkumu l-munkara famā kāna jawāba qawmihi illā an qālū i'tinā biʿadhābi l-lahi in kunta mina l-ṣādiqīn

قَالَ رَبِّ ٱنصُرۡنِی عَلَى ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلۡمُفۡسِدِینَ ۝٣٠

The Study Quran

He said, “My Lord, help me against the people who work corruption.

qāla rabbi unṣur'nī ʿalā l-qawmi l-muf'sidīn

4 Opposition to Truth ever a Failure

وَلَمَّا جَاۤءَتۡ رُسُلُنَاۤ إِبۡرَ ٰهِیمَ بِٱلۡبُشۡرَىٰ قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّا مُهۡلِكُوۤا۟ أَهۡلِ هَـٰذِهِ ٱلۡقَرۡیَةِۖ إِنَّ أَهۡلَهَا كَانُوا۟ ظَـٰلِمِینَ ۝٣١

The Study Quran

And when Our envoys came unto Abraham with glad tidings, they said, “We shall surely destroy the people of this town; truly its people are wrongdoers.

walammā jāat rusulunā ib'rāhīma bil-bush'rā qālū innā muh'likū ahli hādhihi l-qaryati inna ahlahā kānū ẓālimīn

قَالَ إِنَّ فِیهَا لُوطࣰاۚ قَالُوا۟ نَحۡنُ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَن فِیهَاۖ لَنُنَجِّیَنَّهُۥ وَأَهۡلَهُۥۤ إِلَّا ٱمۡرَأَتَهُۥ كَانَتۡ مِنَ ٱلۡغَـٰبِرِینَ ۝٣٢

The Study Quran

He said, “Verily, Lot is in it.” They said, “We know better who is in it. Assuredly We shall save him and his family, save for his wife; she is among those who lagged behind.

qāla inna fīhā lūṭan qālū naḥnu aʿlamu biman fīhā lanunajjiyannahu wa-ahlahu illā im'ra-atahu kānat mina l-ghābirīn

وَلَمَّاۤ أَن جَاۤءَتۡ رُسُلُنَا لُوطࣰا سِیۤءَ بِهِمۡ وَضَاقَ بِهِمۡ ذَرۡعࣰاۖ وَقَالُوا۟ لَا تَخَفۡ وَلَا تَحۡزَنۡ إِنَّا مُنَجُّوكَ وَأَهۡلَكَ إِلَّا ٱمۡرَأَتَكَ كَانَتۡ مِنَ ٱلۡغَـٰبِرِینَ ۝٣٣

The Study Quran

And when Our envoys came unto Lot, he was distressed on their account; yet he was constrained from helping them. And they said, “Be not afraid, nor grieve. We shall surely save thee and thy family, save for thy wife; she is among those who lagged behind

walammā an jāat rusulunā lūṭan sīa bihim waḍāqa bihim dharʿan waqālū lā takhaf walā taḥzan innā munajjūka wa-ahlaka illā im'ra-ataka kānat mina l-ghābirīn

إِنَّا مُنزِلُونَ عَلَىٰۤ أَهۡلِ هَـٰذِهِ ٱلۡقَرۡیَةِ رِجۡزࣰا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَفۡسُقُونَ ۝٣٤

The Study Quran

Truly we shall bring down upon the people of this town a torment from Heaven for having been iniquitous.

innā munzilūna ʿalā ahli hādhihi l-qaryati rij'zan mina l-samāi bimā kānū yafsuqūn

وَلَقَد تَّرَكۡنَا مِنۡهَاۤ ءَایَةَۢ بَیِّنَةࣰ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٣٥

The Study Quran

And We indeed have left of it a manifest sign for a people who understand

walaqad taraknā min'hā āyatan bayyinatan liqawmin yaʿqilūn

وَإِلَىٰ مَدۡیَنَ أَخَاهُمۡ شُعَیۡبࣰا فَقَالَ یَـٰقَوۡمِ ٱعۡبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱرۡجُوا۟ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ ٱلۡءَاخِرَ وَلَا تَعۡثَوۡا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مُفۡسِدِینَ ۝٣٦

The Study Quran

And unto Midian, [We sent] their brother Shu?ayb; he said, “O my people! Worship God and hope for the Last Day, and behave not wickedly upon the earth, working corruption.

wa-ilā madyana akhāhum shuʿayban faqāla yāqawmi uʿ'budū l-laha wa-ir'jū l-yawma l-ākhira walā taʿthaw fī l-arḍi muf'sidīn

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَتۡهُمُ ٱلرَّجۡفَةُ فَأَصۡبَحُوا۟ فِی دَارِهِمۡ جَـٰثِمِینَ ۝٣٧

The Study Quran

But they denied him, and so the earthquake seized them, and morning found them lying lifeless in their abode

fakadhabūhu fa-akhadhathumu l-rajfatu fa-aṣbaḥū fī dārihim jāthimīn

وَعَادࣰا وَثَمُودَا۟ وَقَد تَّبَیَّنَ لَكُم مِّن مَّسَـٰكِنِهِمۡۖ وَزَیَّنَ لَهُمُ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُ أَعۡمَـٰلَهُمۡ فَصَدَّهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلسَّبِیلِ وَكَانُوا۟ مُسۡتَبۡصِرِینَ ۝٣٨

The Study Quran

and ?Ad, and Thamud; [their fate] is certainly evident to you from their dwellings. Satan made their deeds seem fair unto them and thus turned them from the way, though they had been discerning

waʿādan wathamūdā waqad tabayyana lakum min masākinihim wazayyana lahumu l-shayṭānu aʿmālahum faṣaddahum ʿani l-sabīli wakānū mus'tabṣirīn

وَقَـٰرُونَ وَفِرۡعَوۡنَ وَهَـٰمَـٰنَۖ وَلَقَدۡ جَاۤءَهُم مُّوسَىٰ بِٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِ فَٱسۡتَكۡبَرُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ سَـٰبِقِینَ ۝٣٩

The Study Quran

and Korah, and Pharaoh, and Haman! Indeed, Moses brought them clear proofs, but they waxed arrogant upon the earth, and outstripped [Us] not

waqārūna wafir'ʿawna wahāmāna walaqad jāahum mūsā bil-bayināti fa-is'takbarū fī l-arḍi wamā kānū sābiqīn

فَكُلًّا أَخَذۡنَا بِذَنۢبِهِۦۖ فَمِنۡهُم مَّنۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ حَاصِبࣰا وَمِنۡهُم مَّنۡ أَخَذَتۡهُ ٱلصَّیۡحَةُ وَمِنۡهُم مَّنۡ خَسَفۡنَا بِهِ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَمِنۡهُم مَّنۡ أَغۡرَقۡنَاۚ وَمَا كَانَ ٱللَّهُ لِیَظۡلِمَهُمۡ وَلَـٰكِن كَانُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَهُمۡ یَظۡلِمُونَ ۝٤٠

The Study Quran

Each We seized for his sin. Among them are some upon whom We sent a torrent of stones, and among them are some whom the Cry seized, and among them are some whom We caused the earth to engulf, and among them are some whom We drowned. God wronged them not, but themselves did they wrong

fakullan akhadhnā bidhanbihi famin'hum man arsalnā ʿalayhi ḥāṣiban wamin'hum man akhadhathu l-ṣayḥatu wamin'hum man khasafnā bihi l-arḍa wamin'hum man aghraqnā wamā kāna l-lahu liyaẓlimahum walākin kānū anfusahum yaẓlimūn

مَثَلُ ٱلَّذِینَ ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ أَوۡلِیَاۤءَ كَمَثَلِ ٱلۡعَنكَبُوتِ ٱتَّخَذَتۡ بَیۡتࣰاۖ وَإِنَّ أَوۡهَنَ ٱلۡبُیُوتِ لَبَیۡتُ ٱلۡعَنكَبُوتِۚ لَوۡ كَانُوا۟ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٤١

The Study Quran

The parable of those who take protectors apart from God is that of the spider that makes a house. Truly the frailest of houses is the spider’s house, if they but knew

mathalu alladhīna ittakhadhū min dūni l-lahi awliyāa kamathali l-ʿankabūti ittakhadhat baytan wa-inna awhana l-buyūti labaytu l-ʿankabūti law kānū yaʿlamūn

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یَعۡلَمُ مَا یَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِهِۦ مِن شَیۡءࣲۚ وَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلۡحَكِیمُ ۝٤٢

The Study Quran

Truly God knows whatsoever they call upon apart from Him. And He is the Mighty, the Wise

inna l-laha yaʿlamu mā yadʿūna min dūnihi min shayin wahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-ḥakīm

وَتِلۡكَ ٱلۡأَمۡثَـٰلُ نَضۡرِبُهَا لِلنَّاسِۖ وَمَا یَعۡقِلُهَاۤ إِلَّا ٱلۡعَـٰلِمُونَ ۝٤٣

The Study Quran

These are the parables; We set them forth for mankind. But none understand them, save those who know

watil'ka l-amthālu naḍribuhā lilnnāsi wamā yaʿqiluhā illā l-ʿālimūn

خَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ بِٱلۡحَقِّۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَةࣰ لِّلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٤٤

The Study Quran

God created the heavens and the earth in truth. Surely in that is a sign for believers

khalaqa l-lahu l-samāwāti wal-arḍa bil-ḥaqi inna fī dhālika laāyatan lil'mu'minīn

5 Qur'an is a Purifier

ٱتۡلُ مَاۤ أُوحِیَ إِلَیۡكَ مِنَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ وَأَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَۖ إِنَّ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ تَنۡهَىٰ عَنِ ٱلۡفَحۡشَاۤءِ وَٱلۡمُنكَرِۗ وَلَذِكۡرُ ٱللَّهِ أَكۡبَرُۗ وَٱللَّهُ یَعۡلَمُ مَا تَصۡنَعُونَ ۝٤٥

The Study Quran

Recite that which has been revealed unto thee of the Book, and perform the prayer. Truly prayer prevents against indecency and abomination, but the remembrance of God is surely greater. And God knows whatsoever you do

ut'lu mā ūḥiya ilayka mina l-kitābi wa-aqimi l-ṣalata inna l-ṣalata tanhā ʿani l-faḥshāi wal-munkari waladhik'ru l-lahi akbaru wal-lahu yaʿlamu mā taṣnaʿūn

۞ وَلَا تُجَـٰدِلُوۤا۟ أَهۡلَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ إِلَّا بِٱلَّتِی هِیَ أَحۡسَنُ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوا۟ مِنۡهُمۡۖ وَقُولُوۤا۟ ءَامَنَّا بِٱلَّذِیۤ أُنزِلَ إِلَیۡنَا وَأُنزِلَ إِلَیۡكُمۡ وَإِلَـٰهُنَا وَإِلَـٰهُكُمۡ وَ ٰحِدࣱ وَنَحۡنُ لَهُۥ مُسۡلِمُونَ ۝٤٦

The Study Quran

And dispute not with the People of the Book, save in the most virtuous manner, unless it be those of them who have done wrong. And say, “We believe in that which was sent down unto us and was sent down unto you; our God and your God are one, and unto Him are we submitters.

walā tujādilū ahla l-kitābi illā bi-allatī hiya aḥsanu illā alladhīna ẓalamū min'hum waqūlū āmannā bi-alladhī unzila ilaynā wa-unzila ilaykum wa-ilāhunā wa-ilāhukum wāḥidun wanaḥnu lahu mus'limūn

وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ أَنزَلۡنَاۤ إِلَیۡكَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَۚ فَٱلَّذِینَ ءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُمُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِهِۦۖ وَمِنۡ هَـٰۤؤُلَاۤءِ مَن یُؤۡمِنُ بِهِۦۚ وَمَا یَجۡحَدُ بِءَایَـٰتِنَاۤ إِلَّا ٱلۡكَـٰفِرُونَ ۝٤٧

The Study Quran

Thus have We sent down unto thee the Book. So those unto whom We have given the Book believe in it. Among them are some who believe in it; and none reject Our signs, save the disbelievers

wakadhālika anzalnā ilayka l-kitāba fa-alladhīna ātaynāhumu l-kitāba yu'minūna bihi wamin hāulāi man yu'minu bihi wamā yajḥadu biāyātinā illā l-kāfirūn

وَمَا كُنتَ تَتۡلُوا۟ مِن قَبۡلِهِۦ مِن كِتَـٰبࣲ وَلَا تَخُطُّهُۥ بِیَمِینِكَۖ إِذࣰا لَّٱرۡتَابَ ٱلۡمُبۡطِلُونَ ۝٤٨

The Study Quran

And thou didst not recite before this any Book; nor didst thou write it with thy right hand, for then those who make false claims would have doubted

wamā kunta tatlū min qablihi min kitābin walā takhuṭṭuhu biyamīnika idhan la-ir'tāba l-mub'ṭilūn

بَلۡ هُوَ ءَایَـٰتُۢ بَیِّنَـٰتࣱ فِی صُدُورِ ٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡعِلۡمَۚ وَمَا یَجۡحَدُ بِءَایَـٰتِنَاۤ إِلَّا ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ ۝٤٩

The Study Quran

Nay, it is but clear signs in the breasts of those who have been given knowledge, and none reject Our signs, save the wrongdoers

bal huwa āyātun bayyinātun fī ṣudūri alladhīna ūtū l-ʿil'ma wamā yajḥadu biāyātinā illā l-ẓālimūn

وَقَالُوا۟ لَوۡلَاۤ أُنزِلَ عَلَیۡهِ ءَایَـٰتࣱ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦۚ قُلۡ إِنَّمَا ٱلۡءَایَـٰتُ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَإِنَّمَاۤ أَنَا۠ نَذِیرࣱ مُّبِینٌ ۝٥٠

The Study Quran

And they say, “Why have signs not been sent down unto him from his Lord?” Say, “Signs are with God alone, and I am only a clear warner.

waqālū lawlā unzila ʿalayhi āyātun min rabbihi qul innamā l-āyātu ʿinda l-lahi wa-innamā anā nadhīrun mubīnu

أَوَ لَمۡ یَكۡفِهِمۡ أَنَّاۤ أَنزَلۡنَا عَلَیۡكَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ یُتۡلَىٰ عَلَیۡهِمۡۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَرَحۡمَةࣰ وَذِكۡرَىٰ لِقَوۡمࣲ یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٥١

The Study Quran

Does it not suffice them that We have sent down unto thee the Book that is recited unto them? Surely in that is a mercy and a reminder for a people who believe

awalam yakfihim annā anzalnā ʿalayka l-kitāba yut'lā ʿalayhim inna fī dhālika laraḥmatan wadhik'rā liqawmin yu'minūn

6 Warning and Consolation

قُلۡ كَفَىٰ بِٱللَّهِ بَیۡنِی وَبَیۡنَكُمۡ شَهِیدࣰاۖ یَعۡلَمُ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۗ وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ بِٱلۡبَـٰطِلِ وَكَفَرُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرُونَ ۝٥٢

The Study Quran

Say, “God suffices as a Witness between you and me. He knows whatsoever is in the heavens and on the earth.” And those who believe in what is false and disbelieve in God, it is they who are the losers

qul kafā bil-lahi baynī wabaynakum shahīdan yaʿlamu mā fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wa-alladhīna āmanū bil-bāṭili wakafarū bil-lahi ulāika humu l-khāsirūn

وَیَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَكَ بِٱلۡعَذَابِ وَلَوۡلَاۤ أَجَلࣱ مُّسَمࣰّى لَّجَاۤءَهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُۚ وَلَیَأۡتِیَنَّهُم بَغۡتَةࣰ وَهُمۡ لَا یَشۡعُرُونَ ۝٥٣

The Study Quran

And they bid thee hasten the punishment. Yet were it not for a term appointed, the punishment would have come upon them. And it will surely come upon them suddenly, while they are unaware

wayastaʿjilūnaka bil-ʿadhābi walawlā ajalun musamman lajāahumu l-ʿadhābu walayatiyannahum baghtatan wahum lā yashʿurūn

یَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَكَ بِٱلۡعَذَابِ وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمُحِیطَةُۢ بِٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝٥٤

The Study Quran

And they bid thee hasten the punishment. Truly Hell shall encompass the disbeliever

yastaʿjilūnaka bil-ʿadhābi wa-inna jahannama lamuḥīṭatun bil-kāfirīn

یَوۡمَ یَغۡشَىٰهُمُ ٱلۡعَذَابُ مِن فَوۡقِهِمۡ وَمِن تَحۡتِ أَرۡجُلِهِمۡ وَیَقُولُ ذُوقُوا۟ مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝٥٥

The Study Quran

on the Day when the punishment will cover them from above and from beneath their feet, and We shall say, “Taste that which you used to do!

yawma yaghshāhumu l-ʿadhābu min fawqihim wamin taḥti arjulihim wayaqūlu dhūqū mā kuntum taʿmalūn

یَـٰعِبَادِیَ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِنَّ أَرۡضِی وَ ٰسِعَةࣱ فَإِیَّـٰیَ فَٱعۡبُدُونِ ۝٥٦

The Study Quran

O My servants who believe! Truly My earth is vast. So worship Me

yāʿibādiya alladhīna āmanū inna arḍī wāsiʿatun fa-iyyāya fa-uʿ'budūn

كُلُّ نَفۡسࣲ ذَاۤىِٕقَةُ ٱلۡمَوۡتِۖ ثُمَّ إِلَیۡنَا تُرۡجَعُونَ ۝٥٧

The Study Quran

Every soul shall taste death. Then unto Us shall you be returned

kullu nafsin dhāiqatu l-mawti thumma ilaynā tur'jaʿūn

وَٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ لَنُبَوِّئَنَّهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡجَنَّةِ غُرَفࣰا تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَاۚ نِعۡمَ أَجۡرُ ٱلۡعَـٰمِلِینَ ۝٥٨

The Study Quran

And those who believe and perform righteous deeds, We shall surely settle them in lofty abodes of the Garden with rivers running below, therein to abide. Excellent indeed is the reward of the workers [of righteousness]

wa-alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti lanubawwi-annahum mina l-janati ghurafan tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru khālidīna fīhā niʿ'ma ajru l-ʿāmilīn

ٱلَّذِینَ صَبَرُوا۟ وَعَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمۡ یَتَوَكَّلُونَ ۝٥٩

The Study Quran

those who are patient and trust in their Lord

alladhīna ṣabarū waʿalā rabbihim yatawakkalūn

وَكَأَیِّن مِّن دَاۤبَّةࣲ لَّا تَحۡمِلُ رِزۡقَهَا ٱللَّهُ یَرۡزُقُهَا وَإِیَّاكُمۡۚ وَهُوَ ٱلسَّمِیعُ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ۝٦٠

The Study Quran

And how many a beast bears not its own provision, yet God provides for it and for you? And He is the Hearing, the Knowing

waka-ayyin min dābbatin lā taḥmilu riz'qahā l-lahu yarzuquhā wa-iyyākum wahuwa l-samīʿu l-ʿalīm

وَلَىِٕن سَأَلۡتَهُم مَّنۡ خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَسَخَّرَ ٱلشَّمۡسَ وَٱلۡقَمَرَ لَیَقُولُنَّ ٱللَّهُۖ فَأَنَّىٰ یُؤۡفَكُونَ ۝٦١

The Study Quran

Wert thou to ask them, “Who created the heavens and the earth and made the sun and the moon subservient?” They would surely say, “God.” How, then, are they perverted

wala-in sa-altahum man khalaqa l-samāwāti wal-arḍa wasakhara l-shamsa wal-qamara layaqūlunna l-lahu fa-annā yu'fakūn

ٱللَّهُ یَبۡسُطُ ٱلرِّزۡقَ لِمَن یَشَاۤءُ مِنۡ عِبَادِهِۦ وَیَقۡدِرُ لَهُۥۤۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِكُلِّ شَیۡءٍ عَلِیمࣱ ۝٦٢

The Study Quran

God outspreads and straitens provision for whomsoever He will among His servants. Truly God is Knower of all things

al-lahu yabsuṭu l-riz'qa liman yashāu min ʿibādihi wayaqdiru lahu inna l-laha bikulli shayin ʿalīmu

وَلَىِٕن سَأَلۡتَهُم مَّن نَّزَّلَ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مَاۤءࣰ فَأَحۡیَا بِهِ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ مَوۡتِهَا لَیَقُولُنَّ ٱللَّهُۚ قُلِ ٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِۚ بَلۡ أَكۡثَرُهُمۡ لَا یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٦٣

The Study Quran

And wert thou to ask them, “Who sends down water from the sky and revives thereby the earth after its death?” They would surely say, “God.” Say, “Praise be to God!” Nay, but most of them understand not

wala-in sa-altahum man nazzala mina l-samāi māan fa-aḥyā bihi l-arḍa min baʿdi mawtihā layaqūlunna l-lahu quli l-ḥamdu lillahi bal aktharuhum lā yaʿqilūn

7 Triumph of the Faithful

وَمَا هَـٰذِهِ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۤ إِلَّا لَهۡوࣱ وَلَعِبࣱۚ وَإِنَّ ٱلدَّارَ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةَ لَهِیَ ٱلۡحَیَوَانُۘ لَوۡ كَانُوا۟ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٦٤

The Study Quran

The life of this world is naught but diversion and play. And surely the Abode of the Hereafter is life indeed, if they but knew

wamā hādhihi l-ḥayatu l-dun'yā illā lahwun walaʿibun wa-inna l-dāra l-ākhirata lahiya l-ḥayawānu law kānū yaʿlamūn

فَإِذَا رَكِبُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡفُلۡكِ دَعَوُا۟ ٱللَّهَ مُخۡلِصِینَ لَهُ ٱلدِّینَ فَلَمَّا نَجَّىٰهُمۡ إِلَى ٱلۡبَرِّ إِذَا هُمۡ یُشۡرِكُونَ ۝٦٥

The Study Quran

And when they board a ship, they call upon God, devoting religion entirely to Him, but when He delivers them to land, behold, they ascribe partners [unto Him]

fa-idhā rakibū fī l-ful'ki daʿawū l-laha mukh'liṣīna lahu l-dīna falammā najjāhum ilā l-bari idhā hum yush'rikūn

لِیَكۡفُرُوا۟ بِمَاۤ ءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُمۡ وَلِیَتَمَتَّعُوا۟ۚ فَسَوۡفَ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٦٦

The Study Quran

So let them be ungrateful for that which We have given them, and let them enjoy themselves, for soon they will know

liyakfurū bimā ātaynāhum waliyatamattaʿū fasawfa yaʿlamūn

أَوَ لَمۡ یَرَوۡا۟ أَنَّا جَعَلۡنَا حَرَمًا ءَامِنࣰا وَیُتَخَطَّفُ ٱلنَّاسُ مِنۡ حَوۡلِهِمۡۚ أَفَبِٱلۡبَـٰطِلِ یُؤۡمِنُونَ وَبِنِعۡمَةِ ٱللَّهِ یَكۡفُرُونَ ۝٦٧

The Study Quran

Or have they not considered that We have made a secure sanctuary while people are snatched away all around them? Do they believe in that which is false? And are they ungrateful for God’s Blessing

awalam yaraw annā jaʿalnā ḥaraman āminan wayutakhaṭṭafu l-nāsu min ḥawlihim afabil-bāṭili yu'minūna wabiniʿ'mati l-lahi yakfurūn

وَمَنۡ أَظۡلَمُ مِمَّنِ ٱفۡتَرَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًا أَوۡ كَذَّبَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ لَمَّا جَاۤءَهُۥۤۚ أَلَیۡسَ فِی جَهَنَّمَ مَثۡوࣰى لِّلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝٦٨

The Study Quran

Who does greater wrong than one who fabricates a lie against God or denies the truth when it comes unto him? Is there not within Hell an abode for the disbelievers

waman aẓlamu mimmani if'tarā ʿalā l-lahi kadhiban aw kadhaba bil-ḥaqi lammā jāahu alaysa fī jahannama mathwan lil'kāfirīn

وَٱلَّذِینَ جَـٰهَدُوا۟ فِینَا لَنَهۡدِیَنَّهُمۡ سُبُلَنَاۚ وَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَمَعَ ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝٦٩

The Study Quran

But as for those who strive for Us, We shall surely guide them in Our ways. Truly God is with the virtuous

wa-alladhīna jāhadū fīnā lanahdiyannahum subulanā wa-inna l-laha lamaʿa l-muḥ'sinīn
