She That Disputeth, The Pleading Woman, She Who Pleaded — Amatul Rahman Omar Translation

58:1

۞ قَدۡ سَمِعَ ٱللَّهُ قَوۡلَ ٱلَّتِی تُجَـٰدِلُكَ فِی زَوۡجِهَا وَتَشۡتَكِیۤ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَٱللَّهُ یَسۡمَعُ تَحَاوُرَكُمَاۤۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَمِیعُۢ بَصِیرٌ ۝١

Amatul Rahman Omar

Allah has indeed heard the plea of her (- Khoulah wife of Aus bin Samit) who pleads with you (O Muhammad!) with regard to her husband and makes her complaint to Allah (seeking His help). Allah has heard both of you conversing together. Verily, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing

qad samiʿa l-lahu qawla allatī tujādiluka fī zawjihā watashtakī ilā l-lahi wal-lahu yasmaʿu taḥāwurakumā inna l-laha samīʿun baṣīru

58:2

ٱلَّذِینَ یُظَـٰهِرُونَ مِنكُم مِّن نِّسَاۤىِٕهِم مَّا هُنَّ أُمَّهَـٰتِهِمۡۖ إِنۡ أُمَّهَـٰتُهُمۡ إِلَّا ٱلَّـٰۤءِی وَلَدۡنَهُمۡۚ وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَیَقُولُونَ مُنكَرࣰا مِّنَ ٱلۡقَوۡلِ وَزُورࣰاۚ وَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَعَفُوٌّ غَفُورࣱ ۝٢

Amatul Rahman Omar

Such of you who give up (conjugal relationship with) their wives by calling them mothers (should realise that) they do not thereby become their mothers. Their mothers are only those who have given them birth. And they (by calling their wives mothers by Zihar) utter words that are most unseeming and false. And of course Allah is All-Pardoning, Great Protector (against faults)

alladhīna yuẓāhirūna minkum min nisāihim mā hunna ummahātihim in ummahātuhum illā allāī waladnahum wa-innahum layaqūlūna munkaran mina l-qawli wazūran wa-inna l-laha laʿafuwwun ghafūru

58:3

وَٱلَّذِینَ یُظَـٰهِرُونَ مِن نِّسَاۤىِٕهِمۡ ثُمَّ یَعُودُونَ لِمَا قَالُوا۟ فَتَحۡرِیرُ رَقَبَةࣲ مِّن قَبۡلِ أَن یَتَمَاۤسَّاۚ ذَ ٰلِكُمۡ تُوعَظُونَ بِهِۦۚ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ خَبِیرࣱ ۝٣

Amatul Rahman Omar

Such of those who thus happen to call their wives their mothers and then retract what they have said, must free a slave before they two touch each other (for re-establishing conjugal relationship). This is what you are enjoined (to do in case you commit such a hateful thing). And Allah is Well-Aware of what you do

wa-alladhīna yuẓāhirūna min nisāihim thumma yaʿūdūna limā qālū fataḥrīru raqabatin min qabli an yatamāssā dhālikum tūʿaẓūna bihi wal-lahu bimā taʿmalūna khabīru

58:4

فَمَن لَّمۡ یَجِدۡ فَصِیَامُ شَهۡرَیۡنِ مُتَتَابِعَیۡنِ مِن قَبۡلِ أَن یَتَمَاۤسَّاۖ فَمَن لَّمۡ یَسۡتَطِعۡ فَإِطۡعَامُ سِتِّینَ مِسۡكِینࣰاۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ لِتُؤۡمِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦۚ وَتِلۡكَ حُدُودُ ٱللَّهِۗ وَلِلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ عَذَابٌ أَلِیمٌ ۝٤

Amatul Rahman Omar

He that cannot afford (a slave to be set free) shall then (observe) fasts for two consecutive months before he and his wife touch each other (for conjugal relationship). But he who has not even the strength (to fast for that time) shall feed sixty poor people. This has been so (ordained) that you may have faith in Allah and really submit before Him and His Messenger. These are the limits (enjoining you to give up foul practices and injustice to women) prescribed by Allah. And the deniers of these shall receive grievous punishment

faman lam yajid faṣiyāmu shahrayni mutatābiʿayni min qabli an yatamāssā faman lam yastaṭiʿ fa-iṭ'ʿāmu sittīna mis'kīnan dhālika litu'minū bil-lahi warasūlihi watil'ka ḥudūdu l-lahi walil'kāfirīna ʿadhābun alīmu

58:5

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ یُحَاۤدُّونَ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ كُبِتُوا۟ كَمَا كُبِتَ ٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡۚ وَقَدۡ أَنزَلۡنَاۤ ءَایَـٰتِۭ بَیِّنَـٰتࣲۚ وَلِلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ عَذَابࣱ مُّهِینࣱ ۝٥

Amatul Rahman Omar

Surely, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger shall be laid low and humbled as those (opponents of the truth) who were before them were laid low and humble. And We have already revealed clear ordinances (as to how to uplift the status of women). And the deniers of (these ordinances) shall receive a humiliating punishment

inna alladhīna yuḥāddūna l-laha warasūlahu kubitū kamā kubita alladhīna min qablihim waqad anzalnā āyātin bayyinātin walil'kāfirīna ʿadhābun muhīnu

58:6

یَوۡمَ یَبۡعَثُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ جَمِیعࣰا فَیُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا عَمِلُوۤا۟ۚ أَحۡصَىٰهُ ٱللَّهُ وَنَسُوهُۚ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ شَهِیدٌ ۝٦

Amatul Rahman Omar

(This punishment will also take place on) the day when Allah will raise them up all together, then He will inform them of all they have been doing. Allah has kept a recorded account of it (- their deeds), while they have forgotten it. Allah is Witness over every thing

yawma yabʿathuhumu l-lahu jamīʿan fayunabbi-uhum bimā ʿamilū aḥṣāhu l-lahu wanasūhu wal-lahu ʿalā kulli shayin shahīdu

58:7

أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ یَعۡلَمُ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَمَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِۖ مَا یَكُونُ مِن نَّجۡوَىٰ ثَلَـٰثَةٍ إِلَّا هُوَ رَابِعُهُمۡ وَلَا خَمۡسَةٍ إِلَّا هُوَ سَادِسُهُمۡ وَلَاۤ أَدۡنَىٰ مِن ذَ ٰلِكَ وَلَاۤ أَكۡثَرَ إِلَّا هُوَ مَعَهُمۡ أَیۡنَ مَا كَانُوا۟ۖ ثُمَّ یُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا عَمِلُوا۟ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِكُلِّ شَیۡءٍ عَلِیمٌ ۝٧

Amatul Rahman Omar

Do you not see that Allah knows whatever lies in the heavens and whatever lies in the earth? There are no three holding a secret counsel but He is their fourth. There are no such five but He is their sixth. Whether they are fewer than that or more, He is with them, no matter where they are. Then on the Day of Resurrection He will tell them (in the form of requital) all that they have been doing. Surely, Allah is Possessor of full-knowledge of all things

alam tara anna l-laha yaʿlamu mā fī l-samāwāti wamā fī l-arḍi mā yakūnu min najwā thalāthatin illā huwa rābiʿuhum walā khamsatin illā huwa sādisuhum walā adnā min dhālika walā akthara illā huwa maʿahum ayna mā kānū thumma yunabbi-uhum bimā ʿamilū yawma l-qiyāmati inna l-laha bikulli shayin ʿalīmu

58:8

أَلَمۡ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِینَ نُهُوا۟ عَنِ ٱلنَّجۡوَىٰ ثُمَّ یَعُودُونَ لِمَا نُهُوا۟ عَنۡهُ وَیَتَنَـٰجَوۡنَ بِٱلۡإِثۡمِ وَٱلۡعُدۡوَ ٰنِ وَمَعۡصِیَتِ ٱلرَّسُولِۖ وَإِذَا جَاۤءُوكَ حَیَّوۡكَ بِمَا لَمۡ یُحَیِّكَ بِهِ ٱللَّهُ وَیَقُولُونَ فِیۤ أَنفُسِهِمۡ لَوۡلَا یُعَذِّبُنَا ٱللَّهُ بِمَا نَقُولُۚ حَسۡبُهُمۡ جَهَنَّمُ یَصۡلَوۡنَهَاۖ فَبِئۡسَ ٱلۡمَصِیرُ ۝٨

Amatul Rahman Omar

Have you not seen those who were forbidden (to hold) secret counsels and yet repeatedly returned to what they were forbidden to do, and they conferred together secretly (encouraging) sin, transgression and disobedience to the Messenger? When they come to you they greet you (with words) with which Allah has not greeted you, but they say one to another, `Why does Allah not cause us to suffer for what we say (hypocritically).' Sufficient for them is Gehenna (to reckon with them satisfactorily). They shall enter it. What an evil resort

alam tara ilā alladhīna nuhū ʿani l-najwā thumma yaʿūdūna limā nuhū ʿanhu wayatanājawna bil-ith'mi wal-ʿud'wāni wamaʿṣiyati l-rasūli wa-idhā jāūka ḥayyawka bimā lam yuḥayyika bihi l-lahu wayaqūlūna fī anfusihim lawlā yuʿadhibunā l-lahu bimā naqūlu ḥasbuhum jahannamu yaṣlawnahā fabi'sa l-maṣīr

58:9

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِذَا تَنَـٰجَیۡتُمۡ فَلَا تَتَنَـٰجَوۡا۟ بِٱلۡإِثۡمِ وَٱلۡعُدۡوَ ٰنِ وَمَعۡصِیَتِ ٱلرَّسُولِ وَتَنَـٰجَوۡا۟ بِٱلۡبِرِّ وَٱلتَّقۡوَىٰۖ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ ٱلَّذِیۤ إِلَیۡهِ تُحۡشَرُونَ ۝٩

Amatul Rahman Omar

O you who believe! when you hold secret counsels do not confer to promote sin, transgression and disobedience to the Messenger. Rather confer (to promote) piety, and righteousness and restrain from evil. And take Allah as a shield, (Allah) before whom you shall be gathered together

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū idhā tanājaytum falā tatanājaw bil-ith'mi wal-ʿud'wāni wamaʿṣiyati l-rasūli watanājaw bil-biri wal-taqwā wa-ittaqū l-laha alladhī ilayhi tuḥ'sharūn

58:10

إِنَّمَا ٱلنَّجۡوَىٰ مِنَ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنِ لِیَحۡزُنَ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَلَیۡسَ بِضَاۤرِّهِمۡ شَیۡءًا إِلَّا بِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِۚ وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَلۡیَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝١٠

Amatul Rahman Omar

Holding secret counsels (with evil intentions) is (the work) of satan (who does it) to cause unrest and distress to those who believe. Yet he can do them no harm at all except by the leave of Allah. Therefore let the believers repose their trust in Allah

innamā l-najwā mina l-shayṭāni liyaḥzuna alladhīna āmanū walaysa biḍārrihim shayan illā bi-idh'ni l-lahi waʿalā l-lahi falyatawakkali l-mu'minūn

58:11

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِذَا قِیلَ لَكُمۡ تَفَسَّحُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡمَجَـٰلِسِ فَٱفۡسَحُوا۟ یَفۡسَحِ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمۡۖ وَإِذَا قِیلَ ٱنشُزُوا۟ فَٱنشُزُوا۟ یَرۡفَعِ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مِنكُمۡ وَٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡعِلۡمَ دَرَجَـٰتࣲۚ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ خَبِیرࣱ ۝١١

Amatul Rahman Omar

O you who believe! when you are asked to extend the circle (leaving reasonable space between one another when sitting together) in your assemblies, then do extend it. Allah will make ample room for you. And disperse when you are told to disperse. Allah will exalt such of you as believe and such of you as have been given knowledge, to high degrees (of rank). And Allah is Well-Aware of what you do

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū idhā qīla lakum tafassaḥū fī l-majālisi fa-if'saḥū yafsaḥi l-lahu lakum wa-idhā qīla unshuzū fa-unshuzū yarfaʿi l-lahu alladhīna āmanū minkum wa-alladhīna ūtū l-ʿil'ma darajātin wal-lahu bimā taʿmalūna khabīru

58:12

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِذَا نَـٰجَیۡتُمُ ٱلرَّسُولَ فَقَدِّمُوا۟ بَیۡنَ یَدَیۡ نَجۡوَىٰكُمۡ صَدَقَةࣰۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ خَیۡرࣱ لَّكُمۡ وَأَطۡهَرُۚ فَإِن لَّمۡ تَجِدُوا۟ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمٌ ۝١٢

Amatul Rahman Omar

O you who believe! when you want to consult the Messenger in private then advance a charity (for the needy) before your (such) consultations. This is best for you and will help you to better standards of purity. But if you cannot afford it then (never mind) remember that Allah is Great Protector, Ever Merciful

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū idhā nājaytumu l-rasūla faqaddimū bayna yaday najwākum ṣadaqatan dhālika khayrun lakum wa-aṭharu fa-in lam tajidū fa-inna l-laha ghafūrun raḥīmu

58:13

ءَأَشۡفَقۡتُمۡ أَن تُقَدِّمُوا۟ بَیۡنَ یَدَیۡ نَجۡوَىٰكُمۡ صَدَقَـٰتࣲۚ فَإِذۡ لَمۡ تَفۡعَلُوا۟ وَتَابَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَیۡكُمۡ فَأَقِیمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتُوا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَأَطِیعُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥۚ وَٱللَّهُ خَبِیرُۢ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٣

Amatul Rahman Omar

Do you fear that you will not (be able to) give charity before your consultation? So when you do it not and Allah has turned to you (mercifully), observe Prayer and present the Zakat and obey Allah and His Messenger, and Allah is Well-Aware of what you do

a-ashfaqtum an tuqaddimū bayna yaday najwākum ṣadaqātin fa-idh lam tafʿalū watāba l-lahu ʿalaykum fa-aqīmū l-ṣalata waātū l-zakata wa-aṭīʿū l-laha warasūlahu wal-lahu khabīrun bimā taʿmalūn

58:14

۞ أَلَمۡ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِینَ تَوَلَّوۡا۟ قَوۡمًا غَضِبَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَیۡهِم مَّا هُم مِّنكُمۡ وَلَا مِنۡهُمۡ وَیَحۡلِفُونَ عَلَى ٱلۡكَذِبِ وَهُمۡ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٤

Amatul Rahman Omar

Have you not seen those (hypocrites) who befriend a people who have incurred the displeasure of Allah? Such people belong neither to you nor to them and they swear to falsehood, and that (they do it) knowingly

alam tara ilā alladhīna tawallaw qawman ghaḍiba l-lahu ʿalayhim mā hum minkum walā min'hum wayaḥlifūna ʿalā l-kadhibi wahum yaʿlamūn

58:15

أَعَدَّ ٱللَّهُ لَهُمۡ عَذَابࣰا شَدِیدًاۖ إِنَّهُمۡ سَاۤءَ مَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٥

Amatul Rahman Omar

Allah has in store for them a severe punishment. Evil indeed are the deeds they used to do

aʿadda l-lahu lahum ʿadhāban shadīdan innahum sāa mā kānū yaʿmalūn

58:16

ٱتَّخَذُوۤا۟ أَیۡمَـٰنَهُمۡ جُنَّةࣰ فَصَدُّوا۟ عَن سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ فَلَهُمۡ عَذَابࣱ مُّهِینࣱ ۝١٦

Amatul Rahman Omar

They have taken shelter behind their oaths (for their falsehood) so that they turn (people) away from Allah's way. So there awaits them a humiliating punishment

ittakhadhū aymānahum junnatan faṣaddū ʿan sabīli l-lahi falahum ʿadhābun muhīnu

58:17

لَّن تُغۡنِیَ عَنۡهُمۡ أَمۡوَ ٰلُهُمۡ وَلَاۤ أَوۡلَـٰدُهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ شَیۡءًاۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلنَّارِۖ هُمۡ فِیهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ ۝١٧

Amatul Rahman Omar

Neither their belongings nor their children will be of any avail to them against (the punishment of) Allah. They are the inmates of the Fire wherein they will be abiding long

lan tugh'niya ʿanhum amwāluhum walā awlāduhum mina l-lahi shayan ulāika aṣḥābu l-nāri hum fīhā khālidūn

58:18

یَوۡمَ یَبۡعَثُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ جَمِیعࣰا فَیَحۡلِفُونَ لَهُۥ كَمَا یَحۡلِفُونَ لَكُمۡ وَیَحۡسَبُونَ أَنَّهُمۡ عَلَىٰ شَیۡءٍۚ أَلَاۤ إِنَّهُمۡ هُمُ ٱلۡكَـٰذِبُونَ ۝١٨

Amatul Rahman Omar

The day when Allah shall raise them (to life) all together, they will swear to Him as they swear to you and they will think that they have something (reasonable to serve them as a good plea). Beware! it is they who are in fact the liars

yawma yabʿathuhumu l-lahu jamīʿan fayaḥlifūna lahu kamā yaḥlifūna lakum wayaḥsabūna annahum ʿalā shayin alā innahum humu l-kādhibūn

58:19

ٱسۡتَحۡوَذَ عَلَیۡهِمُ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُ فَأَنسَىٰهُمۡ ذِكۡرَ ٱللَّهِۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ حِزۡبُ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنِۚ أَلَاۤ إِنَّ حِزۡبَ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنِ هُمُ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرُونَ ۝١٩

Amatul Rahman Omar

Satan has gained mastery over them and has made them give up the remembrance of Allah. They are the gang of satan. Now, as a matter of fact the gangsters of satan are the losers

is'taḥwadha ʿalayhimu l-shayṭānu fa-ansāhum dhik'ra l-lahi ulāika ḥiz'bu l-shayṭāni alā inna ḥiz'ba l-shayṭāni humu l-khāsirūn

58:20

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ یُحَاۤدُّونَ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥۤ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ فِی ٱلۡأَذَلِّینَ ۝٢٠

Amatul Rahman Omar

Certainly, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger will rank with the lowest of the low

inna alladhīna yuḥāddūna l-laha warasūlahu ulāika fī l-adhalīn

58:21

كَتَبَ ٱللَّهُ لَأَغۡلِبَنَّ أَنَا۠ وَرُسُلِیۤۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ قَوِیٌّ عَزِیزࣱ ۝٢١

Amatul Rahman Omar

Allah has decreed, `Most certainly, I will prevail, I and My Messengers.' Verily, Allah is All-Powerful, All-Mighty

kataba l-lahu la-aghlibanna anā warusulī inna l-laha qawiyyun ʿazīzu

58:22

لَّا تَجِدُ قَوۡمࣰا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡیَوۡمِ ٱلۡءَاخِرِ یُوَاۤدُّونَ مَنۡ حَاۤدَّ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ وَلَوۡ كَانُوۤا۟ ءَابَاۤءَهُمۡ أَوۡ أَبۡنَاۤءَهُمۡ أَوۡ إِخۡوَ ٰنَهُمۡ أَوۡ عَشِیرَتَهُمۡۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ كَتَبَ فِی قُلُوبِهِمُ ٱلۡإِیمَـٰنَ وَأَیَّدَهُم بِرُوحࣲ مِّنۡهُۖ وَیُدۡخِلُهُمۡ جَنَّـٰتࣲ تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَاۚ رَضِیَ ٱللَّهُ عَنۡهُمۡ وَرَضُوا۟ عَنۡهُۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ حِزۡبُ ٱللَّهِۚ أَلَاۤ إِنَّ حِزۡبَ ٱللَّهِ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡلِحُونَ ۝٢٢

Amatul Rahman Omar

You will find no such people who (truly) believe in Allah and the Last Day, loving those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even though they (the opponents of Allah) be their fathers, or their sons or their brethren or their kindred. It is they in whose hearts Allah has inscribed (true) faith and has strengthened them with His own revelation. He will admit them to Gardens served with running streams. They shall abide there for ever. Allah is well pleased with them and they are well pleased with Him. They are Allah's party. Behold! it is Allah's party alone that are the winners of the goal

lā tajidu qawman yu'minūna bil-lahi wal-yawmi l-ākhiri yuwāddūna man ḥādda l-laha warasūlahu walaw kānū ābāahum aw abnāahum aw ikh'wānahum aw ʿashīratahum ulāika kataba fī qulūbihimu l-īmāna wa-ayyadahum birūḥin min'hu wayud'khiluhum jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru khālidīna fīhā raḍiya l-lahu ʿanhum waraḍū ʿanhu ulāika ḥiz'bu l-lahi alā inna ḥiz'ba l-lahi humu l-muf'liḥūn
