She That Disputeth, The Pleading Woman, She Who Pleaded — Muhammad Taqi Usmani Translation

58:1

۞ قَدۡ سَمِعَ ٱللَّهُ قَوۡلَ ٱلَّتِی تُجَـٰدِلُكَ فِی زَوۡجِهَا وَتَشۡتَكِیۤ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَٱللَّهُ یَسۡمَعُ تَحَاوُرَكُمَاۤۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَمِیعُۢ بَصِیرٌ ۝١

Muhammad Taqi Usmani

Allah has heard the talk of the woman who was debating with you about her husband, and was complaining to Allah. Allah was hearing the conversation between both of you. Indeed, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing

qad samiʿa l-lahu qawla allatī tujādiluka fī zawjihā watashtakī ilā l-lahi wal-lahu yasmaʿu taḥāwurakumā inna l-laha samīʿun baṣīru

58:2

ٱلَّذِینَ یُظَـٰهِرُونَ مِنكُم مِّن نِّسَاۤىِٕهِم مَّا هُنَّ أُمَّهَـٰتِهِمۡۖ إِنۡ أُمَّهَـٰتُهُمۡ إِلَّا ٱلَّـٰۤءِی وَلَدۡنَهُمۡۚ وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَیَقُولُونَ مُنكَرࣰا مِّنَ ٱلۡقَوۡلِ وَزُورࣰاۚ وَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَعَفُوٌّ غَفُورࣱ ۝٢

Muhammad Taqi Usmani

Those of you who declare Zihar against their wives, they are not their mothers. Their mothers are none else but those who gave birth to them. Undoubtedly they utter an evil word and a lie; and Allah is surely Most-Forgiving, Very-Merciful

alladhīna yuẓāhirūna minkum min nisāihim mā hunna ummahātihim in ummahātuhum illā allāī waladnahum wa-innahum layaqūlūna munkaran mina l-qawli wazūran wa-inna l-laha laʿafuwwun ghafūru

58:3

وَٱلَّذِینَ یُظَـٰهِرُونَ مِن نِّسَاۤىِٕهِمۡ ثُمَّ یَعُودُونَ لِمَا قَالُوا۟ فَتَحۡرِیرُ رَقَبَةࣲ مِّن قَبۡلِ أَن یَتَمَاۤسَّاۚ ذَ ٰلِكُمۡ تُوعَظُونَ بِهِۦۚ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ خَبِیرࣱ ۝٣

Muhammad Taqi Usmani

Those who declare Zihar against their wives, then retract what they said, obligated on them is to free the neck (of a slave) before the two (spouses) touch one another. This is what you are advised, and Allah is well aware of what you do

wa-alladhīna yuẓāhirūna min nisāihim thumma yaʿūdūna limā qālū fataḥrīru raqabatin min qabli an yatamāssā dhālikum tūʿaẓūna bihi wal-lahu bimā taʿmalūna khabīru

58:4

فَمَن لَّمۡ یَجِدۡ فَصِیَامُ شَهۡرَیۡنِ مُتَتَابِعَیۡنِ مِن قَبۡلِ أَن یَتَمَاۤسَّاۖ فَمَن لَّمۡ یَسۡتَطِعۡ فَإِطۡعَامُ سِتِّینَ مِسۡكِینࣰاۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ لِتُؤۡمِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦۚ وَتِلۡكَ حُدُودُ ٱللَّهِۗ وَلِلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ عَذَابٌ أَلِیمٌ ۝٤

Muhammad Taqi Usmani

But whoever does not find (a slave) has to fast for two consecutive months before the two (spouses) touch one another. Then the one who is not able to do so has to feed sixty indigent persons. This is (laid down) so that you believe in Allah and His Messenger. These are the limits set by Allah; and for the disbelievers there is a painful punishment

faman lam yajid faṣiyāmu shahrayni mutatābiʿayni min qabli an yatamāssā faman lam yastaṭiʿ fa-iṭ'ʿāmu sittīna mis'kīnan dhālika litu'minū bil-lahi warasūlihi watil'ka ḥudūdu l-lahi walil'kāfirīna ʿadhābun alīmu

58:5

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ یُحَاۤدُّونَ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ كُبِتُوا۟ كَمَا كُبِتَ ٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡۚ وَقَدۡ أَنزَلۡنَاۤ ءَایَـٰتِۭ بَیِّنَـٰتࣲۚ وَلِلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ عَذَابࣱ مُّهِینࣱ ۝٥

Muhammad Taqi Usmani

Surely those who oppose Allah and His Messenger shall be disgraced, just as those before them were disgraced. We have sent down clear verses, and for the disbelievers there is a humiliating punishmen

inna alladhīna yuḥāddūna l-laha warasūlahu kubitū kamā kubita alladhīna min qablihim waqad anzalnā āyātin bayyinātin walil'kāfirīna ʿadhābun muhīnu

58:6

یَوۡمَ یَبۡعَثُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ جَمِیعࣰا فَیُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا عَمِلُوۤا۟ۚ أَحۡصَىٰهُ ٱللَّهُ وَنَسُوهُۚ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ شَهِیدٌ ۝٦

Muhammad Taqi Usmani

on the Day when Allah will resurrect them all together, and will tell them what they did; Allah has its full account, while they have forgotten it. Allah is witness to every thing

yawma yabʿathuhumu l-lahu jamīʿan fayunabbi-uhum bimā ʿamilū aḥṣāhu l-lahu wanasūhu wal-lahu ʿalā kulli shayin shahīdu

58:7

أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ یَعۡلَمُ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَمَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِۖ مَا یَكُونُ مِن نَّجۡوَىٰ ثَلَـٰثَةٍ إِلَّا هُوَ رَابِعُهُمۡ وَلَا خَمۡسَةٍ إِلَّا هُوَ سَادِسُهُمۡ وَلَاۤ أَدۡنَىٰ مِن ذَ ٰلِكَ وَلَاۤ أَكۡثَرَ إِلَّا هُوَ مَعَهُمۡ أَیۡنَ مَا كَانُوا۟ۖ ثُمَّ یُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا عَمِلُوا۟ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِكُلِّ شَیۡءٍ عَلِیمٌ ۝٧

Muhammad Taqi Usmani

Have you not observed that Allah knows everything in the heavens and everything in the earth? No secret consulta-tion takes place between three, but He is fourth of them, nor between five, but He is sixth of them, nor between fewer than that or more, but He is with them wherever they may be. Then He will tell them on the Day of Judgment what they did. Surely Allah is All-Knowing about every thing

alam tara anna l-laha yaʿlamu mā fī l-samāwāti wamā fī l-arḍi mā yakūnu min najwā thalāthatin illā huwa rābiʿuhum walā khamsatin illā huwa sādisuhum walā adnā min dhālika walā akthara illā huwa maʿahum ayna mā kānū thumma yunabbi-uhum bimā ʿamilū yawma l-qiyāmati inna l-laha bikulli shayin ʿalīmu

58:8

أَلَمۡ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِینَ نُهُوا۟ عَنِ ٱلنَّجۡوَىٰ ثُمَّ یَعُودُونَ لِمَا نُهُوا۟ عَنۡهُ وَیَتَنَـٰجَوۡنَ بِٱلۡإِثۡمِ وَٱلۡعُدۡوَ ٰنِ وَمَعۡصِیَتِ ٱلرَّسُولِۖ وَإِذَا جَاۤءُوكَ حَیَّوۡكَ بِمَا لَمۡ یُحَیِّكَ بِهِ ٱللَّهُ وَیَقُولُونَ فِیۤ أَنفُسِهِمۡ لَوۡلَا یُعَذِّبُنَا ٱللَّهُ بِمَا نَقُولُۚ حَسۡبُهُمۡ جَهَنَّمُ یَصۡلَوۡنَهَاۖ فَبِئۡسَ ٱلۡمَصِیرُ ۝٨

Muhammad Taqi Usmani

Did you not see those who were forbidden from holding secret talks; then they do again what they were forbidden to do? They whisper for sinful act and wrongdoing and disobedience of the prophet, and when they come to you, they greet you the way Allah does not greet you, and say to themselves, .Why does Allah not punish us for what we say?. Enough for them is Jahannam (Hell); they will enter it, and it is an evil end

alam tara ilā alladhīna nuhū ʿani l-najwā thumma yaʿūdūna limā nuhū ʿanhu wayatanājawna bil-ith'mi wal-ʿud'wāni wamaʿṣiyati l-rasūli wa-idhā jāūka ḥayyawka bimā lam yuḥayyika bihi l-lahu wayaqūlūna fī anfusihim lawlā yuʿadhibunā l-lahu bimā naqūlu ḥasbuhum jahannamu yaṣlawnahā fabi'sa l-maṣīr

58:9

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِذَا تَنَـٰجَیۡتُمۡ فَلَا تَتَنَـٰجَوۡا۟ بِٱلۡإِثۡمِ وَٱلۡعُدۡوَ ٰنِ وَمَعۡصِیَتِ ٱلرَّسُولِ وَتَنَـٰجَوۡا۟ بِٱلۡبِرِّ وَٱلتَّقۡوَىٰۖ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ ٱلَّذِیۤ إِلَیۡهِ تُحۡشَرُونَ ۝٩

Muhammad Taqi Usmani

O you who believe, when you hold secret counsel, do not whisper for sinful act and wrongdoing and disobedience of the prophet, and do whisper for righteousness and taqwa (piety). And fear Allah, before whom you will be gathered together

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū idhā tanājaytum falā tatanājaw bil-ith'mi wal-ʿud'wāni wamaʿṣiyati l-rasūli watanājaw bil-biri wal-taqwā wa-ittaqū l-laha alladhī ilayhi tuḥ'sharūn

58:10

إِنَّمَا ٱلنَّجۡوَىٰ مِنَ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنِ لِیَحۡزُنَ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَلَیۡسَ بِضَاۤرِّهِمۡ شَیۡءًا إِلَّا بِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِۚ وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَلۡیَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝١٠

Muhammad Taqi Usmani

Whispering (for sinful acts) comes from the ShaiTan (Satan), so that he may grieve those who believe, while it is not harmful to them in the least, except with Allah‘s permission. And in Allah the believers must place their trust

innamā l-najwā mina l-shayṭāni liyaḥzuna alladhīna āmanū walaysa biḍārrihim shayan illā bi-idh'ni l-lahi waʿalā l-lahi falyatawakkali l-mu'minūn

58:11

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِذَا قِیلَ لَكُمۡ تَفَسَّحُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡمَجَـٰلِسِ فَٱفۡسَحُوا۟ یَفۡسَحِ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمۡۖ وَإِذَا قِیلَ ٱنشُزُوا۟ فَٱنشُزُوا۟ یَرۡفَعِ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مِنكُمۡ وَٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡعِلۡمَ دَرَجَـٰتࣲۚ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ خَبِیرࣱ ۝١١

Muhammad Taqi Usmani

O you who believe, when it is said to you, .Make room (for others) in the sittings., then make room, and Allah will make room for you (in the Hereafter). And when it is said, .Rise up., then rise up, and Allah will raise those, in ranks, who have believed and are given knowledge. Allah is well-aware of what you do

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū idhā qīla lakum tafassaḥū fī l-majālisi fa-if'saḥū yafsaḥi l-lahu lakum wa-idhā qīla unshuzū fa-unshuzū yarfaʿi l-lahu alladhīna āmanū minkum wa-alladhīna ūtū l-ʿil'ma darajātin wal-lahu bimā taʿmalūna khabīru

58:12

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِذَا نَـٰجَیۡتُمُ ٱلرَّسُولَ فَقَدِّمُوا۟ بَیۡنَ یَدَیۡ نَجۡوَىٰكُمۡ صَدَقَةࣰۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ خَیۡرࣱ لَّكُمۡ وَأَطۡهَرُۚ فَإِن لَّمۡ تَجِدُوا۟ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمٌ ۝١٢

Muhammad Taqi Usmani

O you who believe, when you consult the Messenger in private, then offer something in charity before your consultation. That is better for you and purer. But if you find nothing (to offer), then Allah is Most-Forgiving, Very-Merciful

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū idhā nājaytumu l-rasūla faqaddimū bayna yaday najwākum ṣadaqatan dhālika khayrun lakum wa-aṭharu fa-in lam tajidū fa-inna l-laha ghafūrun raḥīmu

58:13

ءَأَشۡفَقۡتُمۡ أَن تُقَدِّمُوا۟ بَیۡنَ یَدَیۡ نَجۡوَىٰكُمۡ صَدَقَـٰتࣲۚ فَإِذۡ لَمۡ تَفۡعَلُوا۟ وَتَابَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَیۡكُمۡ فَأَقِیمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتُوا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَأَطِیعُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥۚ وَٱللَّهُ خَبِیرُۢ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٣

Muhammad Taqi Usmani

Have you become afraid of offering charities before your consultation? So when you did not do so, and Allah has forgiven you, then establish Salah, and pay Zakah, and obey Allah and His Messenger. And Allah is well aware of what you do

a-ashfaqtum an tuqaddimū bayna yaday najwākum ṣadaqātin fa-idh lam tafʿalū watāba l-lahu ʿalaykum fa-aqīmū l-ṣalata waātū l-zakata wa-aṭīʿū l-laha warasūlahu wal-lahu khabīrun bimā taʿmalūn

58:14

۞ أَلَمۡ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِینَ تَوَلَّوۡا۟ قَوۡمًا غَضِبَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَیۡهِم مَّا هُم مِّنكُمۡ وَلَا مِنۡهُمۡ وَیَحۡلِفُونَ عَلَى ٱلۡكَذِبِ وَهُمۡ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٤

Muhammad Taqi Usmani

Have you not seen those who have friendship with a people with whom Allah is angry. They are neither of you nor of them. They swear false oaths while they know

alam tara ilā alladhīna tawallaw qawman ghaḍiba l-lahu ʿalayhim mā hum minkum walā min'hum wayaḥlifūna ʿalā l-kadhibi wahum yaʿlamūn

58:15

أَعَدَّ ٱللَّهُ لَهُمۡ عَذَابࣰا شَدِیدًاۖ إِنَّهُمۡ سَاۤءَ مَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٥

Muhammad Taqi Usmani

Allah has prepared a severe punishment for them. Indeed, evil is what they have been doing

aʿadda l-lahu lahum ʿadhāban shadīdan innahum sāa mā kānū yaʿmalūn

58:16

ٱتَّخَذُوۤا۟ أَیۡمَـٰنَهُمۡ جُنَّةࣰ فَصَدُّوا۟ عَن سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ فَلَهُمۡ عَذَابࣱ مُّهِینࣱ ۝١٦

Muhammad Taqi Usmani

They have taken their oaths as a shield, and then have prevented (people) from the way of Allah. Therefore, for them there is a humiliating punishment

ittakhadhū aymānahum junnatan faṣaddū ʿan sabīli l-lahi falahum ʿadhābun muhīnu

58:17

لَّن تُغۡنِیَ عَنۡهُمۡ أَمۡوَ ٰلُهُمۡ وَلَاۤ أَوۡلَـٰدُهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ شَیۡءًاۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلنَّارِۖ هُمۡ فِیهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ ۝١٧

Muhammad Taqi Usmani

Their riches and their children will never benefit them against Allah. They are the inmates of the Fire. They will live there forever

lan tugh'niya ʿanhum amwāluhum walā awlāduhum mina l-lahi shayan ulāika aṣḥābu l-nāri hum fīhā khālidūn

58:18

یَوۡمَ یَبۡعَثُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ جَمِیعࣰا فَیَحۡلِفُونَ لَهُۥ كَمَا یَحۡلِفُونَ لَكُمۡ وَیَحۡسَبُونَ أَنَّهُمۡ عَلَىٰ شَیۡءٍۚ أَلَاۤ إِنَّهُمۡ هُمُ ٱلۡكَـٰذِبُونَ ۝١٨

Muhammad Taqi Usmani

the Day Allah will raise all of them, and they will swear before Him as they swear before you, and will think that they have something to stand upon. Be assured that they are sheer liars

yawma yabʿathuhumu l-lahu jamīʿan fayaḥlifūna lahu kamā yaḥlifūna lakum wayaḥsabūna annahum ʿalā shayin alā innahum humu l-kādhibūn

58:19

ٱسۡتَحۡوَذَ عَلَیۡهِمُ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُ فَأَنسَىٰهُمۡ ذِكۡرَ ٱللَّهِۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ حِزۡبُ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنِۚ أَلَاۤ إِنَّ حِزۡبَ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنِ هُمُ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرُونَ ۝١٩

Muhammad Taqi Usmani

The ShaiTan (Satan) has prevailed upon them; so he has made them neglect to remember Allah. They are the party of ShaiTan . Be assured that it is (the members of the) party of ShaiTan that are the losers

is'taḥwadha ʿalayhimu l-shayṭānu fa-ansāhum dhik'ra l-lahi ulāika ḥiz'bu l-shayṭāni alā inna ḥiz'ba l-shayṭāni humu l-khāsirūn

58:20

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ یُحَاۤدُّونَ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥۤ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ فِی ٱلۡأَذَلِّینَ ۝٢٠

Muhammad Taqi Usmani

Indeed, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, they are among the lowest

inna alladhīna yuḥāddūna l-laha warasūlahu ulāika fī l-adhalīn

58:21

كَتَبَ ٱللَّهُ لَأَغۡلِبَنَّ أَنَا۠ وَرُسُلِیۤۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ قَوِیٌّ عَزِیزࣱ ۝٢١

Muhammad Taqi Usmani

Allah has written (in His pre-destined decree), .I will certainly prevail, both I and My messengers. Surely Allah is All-Strong, All-Mighty

kataba l-lahu la-aghlibanna anā warusulī inna l-laha qawiyyun ʿazīzu

58:22

لَّا تَجِدُ قَوۡمࣰا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡیَوۡمِ ٱلۡءَاخِرِ یُوَاۤدُّونَ مَنۡ حَاۤدَّ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ وَلَوۡ كَانُوۤا۟ ءَابَاۤءَهُمۡ أَوۡ أَبۡنَاۤءَهُمۡ أَوۡ إِخۡوَ ٰنَهُمۡ أَوۡ عَشِیرَتَهُمۡۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ كَتَبَ فِی قُلُوبِهِمُ ٱلۡإِیمَـٰنَ وَأَیَّدَهُم بِرُوحࣲ مِّنۡهُۖ وَیُدۡخِلُهُمۡ جَنَّـٰتࣲ تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَاۚ رَضِیَ ٱللَّهُ عَنۡهُمۡ وَرَضُوا۟ عَنۡهُۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ حِزۡبُ ٱللَّهِۚ أَلَاۤ إِنَّ حِزۡبَ ٱللَّهِ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡلِحُونَ ۝٢٢

Muhammad Taqi Usmani

You will not find those who believe in Allah and in the Hereafter having friendship with those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even though they may be their fathers or their sons or their brothers or their clan. They are such that Allah has inscribed faith on their hearts, and has supported them with a spirit from Him. He will admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow, in which they will live forever. Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Allah. Those are the party of Allah. Be assured that it is (the members of) the party of Allah that are the successful

lā tajidu qawman yu'minūna bil-lahi wal-yawmi l-ākhiri yuwāddūna man ḥādda l-laha warasūlahu walaw kānū ābāahum aw abnāahum aw ikh'wānahum aw ʿashīratahum ulāika kataba fī qulūbihimu l-īmāna wa-ayyadahum birūḥin min'hu wayud'khiluhum jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru khālidīna fīhā raḍiya l-lahu ʿanhum waraḍū ʿanhu ulāika ḥiz'bu l-lahi alā inna ḥiz'ba l-lahi humu l-muf'liḥūn
