She That Disputeth, The Pleading Woman, She Who Pleaded — Linda Ilham Barto Translation

58:1

۞ قَدۡ سَمِعَ ٱللَّهُ قَوۡلَ ٱلَّتِی تُجَـٰدِلُكَ فِی زَوۡجِهَا وَتَشۡتَكِیۤ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَٱللَّهُ یَسۡمَعُ تَحَاوُرَكُمَاۤۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَمِیعُۢ بَصِیرٌ ۝١

Linda "iLham" Barto

Allah has certainly heard the words of the woman pleading with you about her husband and complaining to Allah. Allah heard what both of you had to say. Truly, Allah is All-hearing, All-seeing.

qad samiʿa l-lahu qawla allatī tujādiluka fī zawjihā watashtakī ilā l-lahi wal-lahu yasmaʿu taḥāwurakumā inna l-laha samīʿun baṣīru

58:2

ٱلَّذِینَ یُظَـٰهِرُونَ مِنكُم مِّن نِّسَاۤىِٕهِم مَّا هُنَّ أُمَّهَـٰتِهِمۡۖ إِنۡ أُمَّهَـٰتُهُمۡ إِلَّا ٱلَّـٰۤءِی وَلَدۡنَهُمۡۚ وَإِنَّهُمۡ لَیَقُولُونَ مُنكَرࣰا مِّنَ ٱلۡقَوۡلِ وَزُورࣰاۚ وَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَعَفُوٌّ غَفُورࣱ ۝٢

Linda "iLham" Barto

Some men separate from their wives by saying that their wives are as unlawful to them in marriage as their own mothers. (Their wives) are not like their mothers. No one can be their mothers except the ones who gave birth to them. They certainly speak with hate and deception. But certainly Allah is the Forgiver, Most Forgiving.

alladhīna yuẓāhirūna minkum min nisāihim mā hunna ummahātihim in ummahātuhum illā allāī waladnahum wa-innahum layaqūlūna munkaran mina l-qawli wazūran wa-inna l-laha laʿafuwwun ghafūru

58:3

وَٱلَّذِینَ یُظَـٰهِرُونَ مِن نِّسَاۤىِٕهِمۡ ثُمَّ یَعُودُونَ لِمَا قَالُوا۟ فَتَحۡرِیرُ رَقَبَةࣲ مِّن قَبۡلِ أَن یَتَمَاۤسَّاۚ ذَ ٰلِكُمۡ تُوعَظُونَ بِهِۦۚ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ خَبِیرࣱ ۝٣

Linda "iLham" Barto

Consider those who separate from their wives by claiming their wives are as forbidden as their mothers. Afterward, they want to back away from their claims. They should each free a slave before reuniting [with their wives]. This is your admonishment! Allah is Fully Aware of what you do.

wa-alladhīna yuẓāhirūna min nisāihim thumma yaʿūdūna limā qālū fataḥrīru raqabatin min qabli an yatamāssā dhālikum tūʿaẓūna bihi wal-lahu bimā taʿmalūna khabīru

58:4

فَمَن لَّمۡ یَجِدۡ فَصِیَامُ شَهۡرَیۡنِ مُتَتَابِعَیۡنِ مِن قَبۡلِ أَن یَتَمَاۤسَّاۖ فَمَن لَّمۡ یَسۡتَطِعۡ فَإِطۡعَامُ سِتِّینَ مِسۡكِینࣰاۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ لِتُؤۡمِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦۚ وَتِلۡكَ حُدُودُ ٱللَّهِۗ وَلِلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ عَذَابٌ أَلِیمٌ ۝٤

Linda "iLham" Barto

If someone does not have the ability [to free a slave], he should fast for two consecutive months before reconciliation. If someone is unable (to fast for two months), he should feed sixty people in need. This is so you may put your trust in Allah and His messenger. These are Allah’s limitations. The unbelievers will have a painful punishment.

faman lam yajid faṣiyāmu shahrayni mutatābiʿayni min qabli an yatamāssā faman lam yastaṭiʿ fa-iṭ'ʿāmu sittīna mis'kīnan dhālika litu'minū bil-lahi warasūlihi watil'ka ḥudūdu l-lahi walil'kāfirīna ʿadhābun alīmu

58:5

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ یُحَاۤدُّونَ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ كُبِتُوا۟ كَمَا كُبِتَ ٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡۚ وَقَدۡ أَنزَلۡنَاۤ ءَایَـٰتِۭ بَیِّنَـٰتࣲۚ وَلِلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ عَذَابࣱ مُّهِینࣱ ۝٥

Linda "iLham" Barto

Certainly, those who oppose Allah and His messenger will be disgraced, as were those before them. Certainly We have already bestowed evident signs. For the unbelievers is a humiliating penalty.

inna alladhīna yuḥāddūna l-laha warasūlahu kubitū kamā kubita alladhīna min qablihim waqad anzalnā āyātin bayyinātin walil'kāfirīna ʿadhābun muhīnu

58:6

یَوۡمَ یَبۡعَثُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ جَمِیعࣰا فَیُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا عَمِلُوۤا۟ۚ أَحۡصَىٰهُ ٱللَّهُ وَنَسُوهُۚ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ شَهِیدٌ ۝٦

Linda "iLham" Barto

On that day, Allah will raise them all and make their past conduct apparent. Allah has evaluated it, though they may have forgotten it. Allah is Witness of all.

yawma yabʿathuhumu l-lahu jamīʿan fayunabbi-uhum bimā ʿamilū aḥṣāhu l-lahu wanasūhu wal-lahu ʿalā kulli shayin shahīdu

58:7

أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ یَعۡلَمُ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَمَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِۖ مَا یَكُونُ مِن نَّجۡوَىٰ ثَلَـٰثَةٍ إِلَّا هُوَ رَابِعُهُمۡ وَلَا خَمۡسَةٍ إِلَّا هُوَ سَادِسُهُمۡ وَلَاۤ أَدۡنَىٰ مِن ذَ ٰلِكَ وَلَاۤ أَكۡثَرَ إِلَّا هُوَ مَعَهُمۡ أَیۡنَ مَا كَانُوا۟ۖ ثُمَّ یُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا عَمِلُوا۟ یَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِكُلِّ شَیۡءٍ عَلِیمٌ ۝٧

Linda "iLham" Barto

Do you not understand that Allah knows whatever is of the skies and Earth? There is not a secret consultation among three without His making the fourth. [There is not a secret consultation] among five without His making the sixth. If there are fewer or more, He is with them wherever they are. Finally, He will advise them of their conduct, on the Day of Judgment. Allah is, over everything, Knowledgeable.

alam tara anna l-laha yaʿlamu mā fī l-samāwāti wamā fī l-arḍi mā yakūnu min najwā thalāthatin illā huwa rābiʿuhum walā khamsatin illā huwa sādisuhum walā adnā min dhālika walā akthara illā huwa maʿahum ayna mā kānū thumma yunabbi-uhum bimā ʿamilū yawma l-qiyāmati inna l-laha bikulli shayin ʿalīmu

58:8

أَلَمۡ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِینَ نُهُوا۟ عَنِ ٱلنَّجۡوَىٰ ثُمَّ یَعُودُونَ لِمَا نُهُوا۟ عَنۡهُ وَیَتَنَـٰجَوۡنَ بِٱلۡإِثۡمِ وَٱلۡعُدۡوَ ٰنِ وَمَعۡصِیَتِ ٱلرَّسُولِۖ وَإِذَا جَاۤءُوكَ حَیَّوۡكَ بِمَا لَمۡ یُحَیِّكَ بِهِ ٱللَّهُ وَیَقُولُونَ فِیۤ أَنفُسِهِمۡ لَوۡلَا یُعَذِّبُنَا ٱللَّهُ بِمَا نَقُولُۚ حَسۡبُهُمۡ جَهَنَّمُ یَصۡلَوۡنَهَاۖ فَبِئۡسَ ٱلۡمَصِیرُ ۝٨

Linda "iLham" Barto

Are you not aware of those who were forbidden to have secret counsels and yet reverted to that which they were forbidden? They hold secret counsels among themselves for sin and hostility and disobedience to the messenger. When they come to you, they greet you but not in the way that Allah greets you. They say to themselves, “Why does Allah not punish us for our words?” Hell is enough for them. They will burn in it. That destination is horrible!

alam tara ilā alladhīna nuhū ʿani l-najwā thumma yaʿūdūna limā nuhū ʿanhu wayatanājawna bil-ith'mi wal-ʿud'wāni wamaʿṣiyati l-rasūli wa-idhā jāūka ḥayyawka bimā lam yuḥayyika bihi l-lahu wayaqūlūna fī anfusihim lawlā yuʿadhibunā l-lahu bimā naqūlu ḥasbuhum jahannamu yaṣlawnahā fabi'sa l-maṣīr

58:9

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِذَا تَنَـٰجَیۡتُمۡ فَلَا تَتَنَـٰجَوۡا۟ بِٱلۡإِثۡمِ وَٱلۡعُدۡوَ ٰنِ وَمَعۡصِیَتِ ٱلرَّسُولِ وَتَنَـٰجَوۡا۟ بِٱلۡبِرِّ وَٱلتَّقۡوَىٰۖ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ ٱلَّذِیۤ إِلَیۡهِ تُحۡشَرُونَ ۝٩

Linda "iLham" Barto

O Believers, when you hold secret counsel, do not do so for evil purposes and hostility or disobedience to the Messenger. Do so for righteousness and piety, and fear Allah to whom you shall return.

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū idhā tanājaytum falā tatanājaw bil-ith'mi wal-ʿud'wāni wamaʿṣiyati l-rasūli watanājaw bil-biri wal-taqwā wa-ittaqū l-laha alladhī ilayhi tuḥ'sharūn

58:10

إِنَّمَا ٱلنَّجۡوَىٰ مِنَ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنِ لِیَحۡزُنَ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَلَیۡسَ بِضَاۤرِّهِمۡ شَیۡءًا إِلَّا بِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِۚ وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَلۡیَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝١٠

Linda "iLham" Barto

Secret counsels are [often] inspired by Satan in order to grieve the believers, but he cannot harm them in the least except as Allah permits. On Allah may believers put their trust.

innamā l-najwā mina l-shayṭāni liyaḥzuna alladhīna āmanū walaysa biḍārrihim shayan illā bi-idh'ni l-lahi waʿalā l-lahi falyatawakkali l-mu'minūn

58:11

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِذَا قِیلَ لَكُمۡ تَفَسَّحُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡمَجَـٰلِسِ فَٱفۡسَحُوا۟ یَفۡسَحِ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمۡۖ وَإِذَا قِیلَ ٱنشُزُوا۟ فَٱنشُزُوا۟ یَرۡفَعِ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مِنكُمۡ وَٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡعِلۡمَ دَرَجَـٰتࣲۚ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ خَبِیرࣱ ۝١١

Linda "iLham" Barto

O Believers, when you are told to make room in assembly, make room [by moving closer together to allow others into the assembly]. Allah will provide space for you. When you are told to rise, rise [respectfully]. Allah will raise to prestigious levels those of you who believe and who have been granted knowledge. Allah is well acquainted with all that you do.

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū idhā qīla lakum tafassaḥū fī l-majālisi fa-if'saḥū yafsaḥi l-lahu lakum wa-idhā qīla unshuzū fa-unshuzū yarfaʿi l-lahu alladhīna āmanū minkum wa-alladhīna ūtū l-ʿil'ma darajātin wal-lahu bimā taʿmalūna khabīru

58:12

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوۤا۟ إِذَا نَـٰجَیۡتُمُ ٱلرَّسُولَ فَقَدِّمُوا۟ بَیۡنَ یَدَیۡ نَجۡوَىٰكُمۡ صَدَقَةࣰۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ خَیۡرࣱ لَّكُمۡ وَأَطۡهَرُۚ فَإِن لَّمۡ تَجِدُوا۟ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمٌ ۝١٢

Linda "iLham" Barto

O Believers, when you consult the messenger, invest something in charity before your private consultation. That would be good for you and most appropriate. If you don’t have [anything to donate], Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.

yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū idhā nājaytumu l-rasūla faqaddimū bayna yaday najwākum ṣadaqatan dhālika khayrun lakum wa-aṭharu fa-in lam tajidū fa-inna l-laha ghafūrun raḥīmu

58:13

ءَأَشۡفَقۡتُمۡ أَن تُقَدِّمُوا۟ بَیۡنَ یَدَیۡ نَجۡوَىٰكُمۡ صَدَقَـٰتࣲۚ فَإِذۡ لَمۡ تَفۡعَلُوا۟ وَتَابَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَیۡكُمۡ فَأَقِیمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتُوا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَأَطِیعُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥۚ وَٱللَّهُ خَبِیرُۢ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٣

Linda "iLham" Barto

Are you reluctant to give charitably before your private consultations? If you don’t do so, and Allah forgives you, then establish routine prayer, practice standard charity, and obey Allah and His messenger. Allah is well acquainted with all that you do.

a-ashfaqtum an tuqaddimū bayna yaday najwākum ṣadaqātin fa-idh lam tafʿalū watāba l-lahu ʿalaykum fa-aqīmū l-ṣalata waātū l-zakata wa-aṭīʿū l-laha warasūlahu wal-lahu khabīrun bimā taʿmalūn

58:14

۞ أَلَمۡ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِینَ تَوَلَّوۡا۟ قَوۡمًا غَضِبَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَیۡهِم مَّا هُم مِّنكُمۡ وَلَا مِنۡهُمۡ وَیَحۡلِفُونَ عَلَى ٱلۡكَذِبِ وَهُمۡ یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝١٤

Linda "iLham" Barto

Have you not paid attention to those who befriend people who have the wrath of Allah upon them? They are neither of you nor of them. They knowingly pledge to falsehood.

alam tara ilā alladhīna tawallaw qawman ghaḍiba l-lahu ʿalayhim mā hum minkum walā min'hum wayaḥlifūna ʿalā l-kadhibi wahum yaʿlamūn

58:15

أَعَدَّ ٱللَّهُ لَهُمۡ عَذَابࣰا شَدِیدًاۖ إِنَّهُمۡ سَاۤءَ مَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٥

Linda "iLham" Barto

Allah has prepared for them a severe punishment. Their deeds are truly evil.

aʿadda l-lahu lahum ʿadhāban shadīdan innahum sāa mā kānū yaʿmalūn

58:16

ٱتَّخَذُوۤا۟ أَیۡمَـٰنَهُمۡ جُنَّةࣰ فَصَدُّوا۟ عَن سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ فَلَهُمۡ عَذَابࣱ مُّهِینࣱ ۝١٦

Linda "iLham" Barto

They have made their oaths as a cover-up. That’s how they obstruct the path of Allah. They will have a humiliating penalty.

ittakhadhū aymānahum junnatan faṣaddū ʿan sabīli l-lahi falahum ʿadhābun muhīnu

58:17

لَّن تُغۡنِیَ عَنۡهُمۡ أَمۡوَ ٰلُهُمۡ وَلَاۤ أَوۡلَـٰدُهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ شَیۡءًاۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلنَّارِۖ هُمۡ فِیهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ ۝١٧

Linda "iLham" Barto

Their wealth and their children will have no benefit for them against Allah. They will be companions of the fire to dwell therein.

lan tugh'niya ʿanhum amwāluhum walā awlāduhum mina l-lahi shayan ulāika aṣḥābu l-nāri hum fīhā khālidūn

58:18

یَوۡمَ یَبۡعَثُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ جَمِیعࣰا فَیَحۡلِفُونَ لَهُۥ كَمَا یَحۡلِفُونَ لَكُمۡ وَیَحۡسَبُونَ أَنَّهُمۡ عَلَىٰ شَیۡءٍۚ أَلَاۤ إِنَّهُمۡ هُمُ ٱلۡكَـٰذِبُونَ ۝١٨

Linda "iLham" Barto

One Day Allah will raise them. They will then swear to Him as they swear to you. They think they have a case. No, indeed! They are only liars.

yawma yabʿathuhumu l-lahu jamīʿan fayaḥlifūna lahu kamā yaḥlifūna lakum wayaḥsabūna annahum ʿalā shayin alā innahum humu l-kādhibūn

58:19

ٱسۡتَحۡوَذَ عَلَیۡهِمُ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُ فَأَنسَىٰهُمۡ ذِكۡرَ ٱللَّهِۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ حِزۡبُ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنِۚ أَلَاۤ إِنَّ حِزۡبَ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنِ هُمُ ٱلۡخَـٰسِرُونَ ۝١٩

Linda "iLham" Barto

Satan has hold of them, so he has made them lose the remembrance of Allah. They are of Satan’s gang. Truly, Satan’s gang will perish.

is'taḥwadha ʿalayhimu l-shayṭānu fa-ansāhum dhik'ra l-lahi ulāika ḥiz'bu l-shayṭāni alā inna ḥiz'ba l-shayṭāni humu l-khāsirūn

58:20

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ یُحَاۤدُّونَ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥۤ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ فِی ٱلۡأَذَلِّینَ ۝٢٠

Linda "iLham" Barto

Those who oppose Allah and His messenger will be among those most humiliated.

inna alladhīna yuḥāddūna l-laha warasūlahu ulāika fī l-adhalīn

58:21

كَتَبَ ٱللَّهُ لَأَغۡلِبَنَّ أَنَا۠ وَرُسُلِیۤۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ قَوِیٌّ عَزِیزࣱ ۝٢١

Linda "iLham" Barto

Allah has decreed, “I and My messengers must prevail!” Allah is Strongest, Victorious.

kataba l-lahu la-aghlibanna anā warusulī inna l-laha qawiyyun ʿazīzu

58:22

لَّا تَجِدُ قَوۡمࣰا یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡیَوۡمِ ٱلۡءَاخِرِ یُوَاۤدُّونَ مَنۡ حَاۤدَّ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ وَلَوۡ كَانُوۤا۟ ءَابَاۤءَهُمۡ أَوۡ أَبۡنَاۤءَهُمۡ أَوۡ إِخۡوَ ٰنَهُمۡ أَوۡ عَشِیرَتَهُمۡۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ كَتَبَ فِی قُلُوبِهِمُ ٱلۡإِیمَـٰنَ وَأَیَّدَهُم بِرُوحࣲ مِّنۡهُۖ وَیُدۡخِلُهُمۡ جَنَّـٰتࣲ تَجۡرِی مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَاۚ رَضِیَ ٱللَّهُ عَنۡهُمۡ وَرَضُوا۟ عَنۡهُۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ حِزۡبُ ٱللَّهِۚ أَلَاۤ إِنَّ حِزۡبَ ٱللَّهِ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡلِحُونَ ۝٢٢

Linda "iLham" Barto

You will not find any people who believe in Allah and the last day in a state of admiring those who resist Allah and His messenger, even though they are their fathers or their sons or their brothers or other relatives. For (the believers), He has written faith into their hearts and strengthened them with a Spirit from Himself. He will admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will dwell forever. Allah will be well pleased with them, and they, with Him. They are the assembly of Allah. Isn’t it truly the assembly of Allah that will achieve [life in all its fullness]?

lā tajidu qawman yu'minūna bil-lahi wal-yawmi l-ākhiri yuwāddūna man ḥādda l-laha warasūlahu walaw kānū ābāahum aw abnāahum aw ikh'wānahum aw ʿashīratahum ulāika kataba fī qulūbihimu l-īmāna wa-ayyadahum birūḥin min'hu wayud'khiluhum jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā l-anhāru khālidīna fīhā raḍiya l-lahu ʿanhum waraḍū ʿanhu ulāika ḥiz'bu l-lahi alā inna ḥiz'ba l-lahi humu l-muf'liḥūn
