1 The Night

وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰ

The Study Quran

By the night as it enshrouds

Waallayli itha yaghsha

وَالنَّهَارِ إِذَا تَجَلَّىٰ

The Study Quran

by the day as it discloses

Waalnnahari itha tajalla

وَمَا خَلَقَ الذَّكَرَ وَالْأُنثَىٰ

The Study Quran

by Him Who created the male and the female

Wama khalaqa alththakara waal-ontha

إِنَّ سَعْيَكُمْ لَشَتَّىٰ

The Study Quran

truly your endeavors are diverse

Inna saAAyakum lashatta

فَأَمَّا مَنْ أَعْطَىٰ وَاتَّقَىٰ

The Study Quran

As for one who gives and is reverent

Faamma man aAAta waittaqa

وَصَدَّقَ بِالْحُسْنَىٰ

The Study Quran

and attests to what is most beautiful

Wasaddaqa bialhusna

فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُ لِلْيُسْرَىٰ

The Study Quran

We shall ease his way unto ease

Fasanuyassiruhu lilyusra

وَأَمَّا مَن بَخِلَ وَاسْتَغْنَىٰ

The Study Quran

And as for one who is miserly and deems himself beyond need

Waamma man bakhila waistaghna

وَكَذَّبَ بِالْحُسْنَىٰ

The Study Quran

and denies what is most beautiful

Wakaththaba bialhusna

فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُ لِلْعُسْرَىٰ

The Study Quran

We shall ease his way unto hardship

Fasanuyassiruhu lilAAusra

وَمَا يُغْنِي عَنْهُ مَالُهُ إِذَا تَرَدَّىٰ

The Study Quran

and his wealth shall not avail him when he perishes

Wama yughnee AAanhu maluhu itha taradda

إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا لَلْهُدَىٰ

The Study Quran

Truly Ours it is to give guidance

Inna AAalayna lalhuda

وَإِنَّ لَنَا لَلْآخِرَةَ وَالْأُولَىٰ

The Study Quran

and truly unto Us belong the Hereafter and this world

Wa-inna lana lal-akhirata waal-oola

فَأَنذَرْتُكُمْ نَارًا تَلَظَّىٰ

The Study Quran

Thus have I warned you of a raging Fire

Faanthartukum naran talaththa

لَا يَصْلَاهَا إِلَّا الْأَشْقَى

The Study Quran

which none shall enter, save the most wretched

La yaslaha illa al-ashqa

الَّذِي كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ

The Study Quran

who denies and turns away

Allathee kaththaba watawalla

وَسَيُجَنَّبُهَا الْأَتْقَى

The Study Quran

And the most reverent shall be removed from it

Wasayujannabuha al-atqa

الَّذِي يُؤْتِي مَالَهُ يَتَزَكَّىٰ

The Study Quran

who gives his wealth to purify

Allathee yu/tee malahu yatazakka

وَمَا لِأَحَدٍ عِندَهُ مِن نِّعْمَةٍ تُجْزَىٰ

The Study Quran

not recompensing any for a favor thereby

Wama li-ahadin AAindahu min niAAmatin tujza

إِلَّا ابْتِغَاءَ وَجْهِ رَبِّهِ الْأَعْلَىٰ

The Study Quran

save for seeking the Face of his Lord, the Most High

Illa ibtighaa wajhi rabbihi al-aAAla

وَلَسَوْفَ يَرْضَىٰ

The Study Quran

and surely he shall be content

Walasawfa yarda
