32
قَالَ یَـٰۤإِبۡلِیسُ مَا لَكَ أَلَّا تَكُونَ مَعَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِینَ ٣٢
qāla yāib'līsu mā laka allā takūna maʿa l-sājidīn
God said, ‘Iblis, why did you not bow down like the others?’
33
قَالَ لَمۡ أَكُن لِّأَسۡجُدَ لِبَشَرٍ خَلَقۡتَهُۥ مِن صَلۡصَـٰلࣲ مِّنۡ حَمَإࣲ مَّسۡنُونࣲ ٣٣
qāla lam akun li-asjuda libasharin khalaqtahu min ṣalṣālin min ḥama-in masnūni
and he answered, ‘I will not bow to a mortal You created from dried clay, formed from dark mud.’
34
قَالَ فَٱخۡرُجۡ مِنۡهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِیمࣱ ٣٤
qāla fa-ukh'ruj min'hā fa-innaka rajīmu
‘Get out of here!’ said God. ‘You are an outcast
35
وَإِنَّ عَلَیۡكَ ٱللَّعۡنَةَ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ ٱلدِّینِ ٣٥
wa-inna ʿalayka l-laʿnata ilā yawmi l-dīn
rejected until the Day of Judgement.’
36
قَالَ رَبِّ فَأَنظِرۡنِیۤ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ یُبۡعَثُونَ ٣٦
qāla rabbi fa-anẓir'nī ilā yawmi yub'ʿathūn
Iblis said, ‘My Lord, give me respite until the Day when they are raised from the dead.’
37
قَالَ فَإِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُنظَرِینَ ٣٧
qāla fa-innaka mina l-munẓarīn
‘You have respite,’ said God
38
إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ ٱلۡوَقۡتِ ٱلۡمَعۡلُومِ ٣٨
ilā yawmi l-waqti l-maʿlūm
‘until the Day of the Appointed Time.’
39
قَالَ رَبِّ بِمَاۤ أَغۡوَیۡتَنِی لَأُزَیِّنَنَّ لَهُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَأُغۡوِیَنَّهُمۡ أَجۡمَعِینَ ٣٩
qāla rabbi bimā aghwaytanī la-uzayyinanna lahum fī l-arḍi wala-ugh'wiyannahum ajmaʿīn
Iblis then said to God, ‘Because You have put me in the wrong, I will lure mankind on earth and put them in the wrong
40
إِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنۡهُمُ ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِینَ ٤٠
illā ʿibādaka min'humu l-mukh'laṣīn
all except Your devoted servants.’
