51 ۞ وَقَالَ ٱللَّهُ لَا تَتَّخِذُوۤا۟ إِلَـٰهَیۡنِ ٱثۡنَیۡنِۖ إِنَّمَا هُوَ إِلَـٰهࣱ وَ ٰحِدࣱ فَإِیَّـٰیَ فَٱرۡهَبُونِ ۝٥١ waqāla l-lahu lā tattakhidhū ilāhayni ith'nayni innamā huwa ilāhun wāḥidun fa-iyyāya fa-ir'habūn God said, ‘Do not take two gods’- for He is the One God––‘ I alone am the One that you should hold in awe.’ 52 وَلَهُۥ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَهُ ٱلدِّینُ وَاصِبًاۚ أَفَغَیۡرَ ٱللَّهِ تَتَّقُونَ ۝٥٢ walahu mā fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi walahu l-dīnu wāṣiban afaghayra l-lahi tattaqūn Everything in the heavens and earth belongs to Him: everlasting obedience is His right. Will you heed anyone other than God 53 وَمَا بِكُم مِّن نِّعۡمَةࣲ فَمِنَ ٱللَّهِۖ ثُمَّ إِذَا مَسَّكُمُ ٱلضُّرُّ فَإِلَیۡهِ تَجۡءَرُونَ ۝٥٣ wamā bikum min niʿ'matin famina l-lahi thumma idhā massakumu l-ḍuru fa-ilayhi tajarūn Whatever good things you possess come from God, and when hardship afflicts you, it is to Him alone you cry out for help 54 ثُمَّ إِذَا كَشَفَ ٱلضُّرَّ عَنكُمۡ إِذَا فَرِیقࣱ مِّنكُم بِرَبِّهِمۡ یُشۡرِكُونَ ۝٥٤ thumma idhā kashafa l-ḍura ʿankum idhā farīqun minkum birabbihim yush'rikūn yet when He has relieved you of your hardship- lo and behold!- some of you attribute partners to your Lord
55 لِیَكۡفُرُوا۟ بِمَاۤ ءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُمۡۚ فَتَمَتَّعُوا۟ فَسَوۡفَ تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٥٥ liyakfurū bimā ātaynāhum fatamattaʿū fasawfa taʿlamūn Let them show ingratitude for the favours We have shown them; ‘Enjoy your brief time- soon you will know.’
56 وَیَجۡعَلُونَ لِمَا لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ نَصِیبࣰا مِّمَّا رَزَقۡنَـٰهُمۡۗ تَٱللَّهِ لَتُسۡءَلُنَّ عَمَّا كُنتُمۡ تَفۡتَرُونَ ۝٥٦ wayajʿalūna limā lā yaʿlamūna naṣīban mimmā razaqnāhum tal-lahi latus'alunna ʿammā kuntum taftarūn They set aside part of the sustenance We give them, for [idols] about which they have no true knowledge. By God! You will be questioned about your false inventions 57 وَیَجۡعَلُونَ لِلَّهِ ٱلۡبَنَـٰتِ سُبۡحَـٰنَهُۥ وَلَهُم مَّا یَشۡتَهُونَ ۝٥٧ wayajʿalūna lillahi l-banāti sub'ḥānahu walahum mā yashtahūn They assign daughters to God––may He be exalted!––and the [sons] they desire to themselves 58 وَإِذَا بُشِّرَ أَحَدُهُم بِٱلۡأُنثَىٰ ظَلَّ وَجۡهُهُۥ مُسۡوَدࣰّا وَهُوَ كَظِیمࣱ ۝٥٨ wa-idhā bushira aḥaduhum bil-unthā ẓalla wajhuhu mus'waddan wahuwa kaẓīmu When one of them is given news of the birth of a baby girl, his face darkens and he is filled with gloom 59 یَتَوَ ٰرَىٰ مِنَ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ مِن سُوۤءِ مَا بُشِّرَ بِهِۦۤۚ أَیُمۡسِكُهُۥ عَلَىٰ هُونٍ أَمۡ یَدُسُّهُۥ فِی ٱلتُّرَابِۗ أَلَا سَاۤءَ مَا یَحۡكُمُونَ ۝٥٩ yatawārā mina l-qawmi min sūi mā bushira bihi ayum'sikuhu ʿalā hūnin am yadussuhu fī l-turābi alā sāa mā yaḥkumūn In his shame he hides himself away from his people because of the bad news he has been given. Should he keep her and suffer contempt or bury her in the dust? How ill they judge
