Verse 20:60 in Context

56 وَلَقَدۡ أَرَیۡنَـٰهُ ءَایَـٰتِنَا كُلَّهَا فَكَذَّبَ وَأَبَىٰ ۝٥٦ walaqad araynāhu āyātinā kullahā fakadhaba wa-ab We showed Pharaoh all Our signs, but he denied them and refused [to change] 57 قَالَ أَجِئۡتَنَا لِتُخۡرِجَنَا مِنۡ أَرۡضِنَا بِسِحۡرِكَ یَـٰمُوسَىٰ ۝٥٧ qāla aji'tanā litukh'rijanā min arḍinā bisiḥ'rika yāmūs He said, ‘Have you come to drive us from our land with your sorcery, Moses 58 فَلَنَأۡتِیَنَّكَ بِسِحۡرࣲ مِّثۡلِهِۦ فَٱجۡعَلۡ بَیۡنَنَا وَبَیۡنَكَ مَوۡعِدࣰا لَّا نُخۡلِفُهُۥ نَحۡنُ وَلَاۤ أَنتَ مَكَانࣰا سُوࣰى ۝٥٨ falanatiyannaka bisiḥ'rin mith'lihi fa-ij'ʿal baynanā wabaynaka mawʿidan lā nukh'lifuhu naḥnu walā anta makānan suwa We will confront you with sorcery to match your own: make an appointment between us which neither of us will fail to keep, in a mutually agreeable place.’ 59 قَالَ مَوۡعِدُكُمۡ یَوۡمُ ٱلزِّینَةِ وَأَن یُحۡشَرَ ٱلنَّاسُ ضُحࣰى ۝٥٩ qāla mawʿidukum yawmu l-zīnati wa-an yuḥ'shara l-nāsu ḍuḥa He said, ‘Your meeting will be on the day of the feast, so let the people be assembled when the sun has risen high.’
60 فَتَوَلَّىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنُ فَجَمَعَ كَیۡدَهُۥ ثُمَّ أَتَىٰ ۝٦٠ fatawallā fir'ʿawnu fajamaʿa kaydahu thumma at Pharaoh withdrew and gathered his resources, then he returned
61 قَالَ لَهُم مُّوسَىٰ وَیۡلَكُمۡ لَا تَفۡتَرُوا۟ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبࣰا فَیُسۡحِتَكُم بِعَذَابࣲۖ وَقَدۡ خَابَ مَنِ ٱفۡتَرَىٰ ۝٦١ qāla lahum mūsā waylakum lā taftarū ʿalā l-lahi kadhiban fayus'ḥitakum biʿadhābin waqad khāba mani if'tar Moses said to them, ‘Beware, do not invent lies against God or He will destroy you with His punishment. Whoever invents lies will fail.’ 62 فَتَنَـٰزَعُوۤا۟ أَمۡرَهُم بَیۡنَهُمۡ وَأَسَرُّوا۟ ٱلنَّجۡوَىٰ ۝٦٢ fatanāzaʿū amrahum baynahum wa-asarrū l-najw So they discussed their plan among themselves, talking secretly 63 قَالُوۤا۟ إِنۡ هَـٰذَ ٰنِ لَسَـٰحِرَ ٰنِ یُرِیدَانِ أَن یُخۡرِجَاكُم مِّنۡ أَرۡضِكُم بِسِحۡرِهِمَا وَیَذۡهَبَا بِطَرِیقَتِكُمُ ٱلۡمُثۡلَىٰ ۝٦٣ qālū in hādhāni lasāḥirāni yurīdāni an yukh'rijākum min arḍikum bisiḥ'rihimā wayadhhabā biṭarīqatikumu l-muth'l saying, ‘These two men are sorcerers. Their purpose is to drive you out of your land with their sorcery and put an end to your time-honoured way of life 64 فَأَجۡمِعُوا۟ كَیۡدَكُمۡ ثُمَّ ٱئۡتُوا۟ صَفࣰّاۚ وَقَدۡ أَفۡلَحَ ٱلۡیَوۡمَ مَنِ ٱسۡتَعۡلَىٰ ۝٦٤ fa-ajmiʿū kaydakum thumma i'tū ṣaffan waqad aflaḥa l-yawma mani is'taʿl So gather your resources and line up for the contest. Whoever wins today is sure to prosper.’
