Verse 3:114 in Context

110 كُنتُمۡ خَیۡرَ أُمَّةٍ أُخۡرِجَتۡ لِلنَّاسِ تَأۡمُرُونَ بِٱلۡمَعۡرُوفِ وَتَنۡهَوۡنَ عَنِ ٱلۡمُنكَرِ وَتُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِۗ وَلَوۡ ءَامَنَ أَهۡلُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ لَكَانَ خَیۡرࣰا لَّهُمۚ مِّنۡهُمُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ وَأَكۡثَرُهُمُ ٱلۡفَـٰسِقُونَ ۝١١٠ kuntum khayra ummatin ukh'rijat lilnnāsi tamurūna bil-maʿrūfi watanhawna ʿani l-munkari watu'minūna bil-lahi walaw āmana ahlu l-kitābi lakāna khayran lahum min'humu l-mu'minūna wa-aktharuhumu l-fāsiqūn [Believers], you are the best community singled out for people: you order what is right, forbid what is wrong, and believe in God. If the People of the Book had also believed, it would have been better for them. For although some of them do believe, most of them are lawbreakers 111 لَن یَضُرُّوكُمۡ إِلَّاۤ أَذࣰىۖ وَإِن یُقَـٰتِلُوكُمۡ یُوَلُّوكُمُ ٱلۡأَدۡبَارَ ثُمَّ لَا یُنصَرُونَ ۝١١١ lan yaḍurrūkum illā adhan wa-in yuqātilūkum yuwallūkumu l-adbāra thumma lā yunṣarūn they will not do you much harm: even if they come out to fight you, they will soon turn tail; they will get no help 112 ضُرِبَتۡ عَلَیۡهِمُ ٱلذِّلَّةُ أَیۡنَ مَا ثُقِفُوۤا۟ إِلَّا بِحَبۡلࣲ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَحَبۡلࣲ مِّنَ ٱلنَّاسِ وَبَاۤءُو بِغَضَبࣲ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَضُرِبَتۡ عَلَیۡهِمُ ٱلۡمَسۡكَنَةُۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ كَانُوا۟ یَكۡفُرُونَ بِءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ وَیَقۡتُلُونَ ٱلۡأَنۢبِیَاۤءَ بِغَیۡرِ حَقࣲّۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ بِمَا عَصَوا۟ وَّكَانُوا۟ یَعۡتَدُونَ ۝١١٢ ḍuribat ʿalayhimu l-dhilatu ayna mā thuqifū illā biḥablin mina l-lahi waḥablin mina l-nāsi wabāū bighaḍabin mina l-lahi waḍuribat ʿalayhimu l-maskanatu dhālika bi-annahum kānū yakfurūna biāyāti l-lahi wayaqtulūna l-anbiyāa bighayri ḥaqqin dhālika bimā ʿaṣaw wakānū yaʿtadūn and, unless they hold fast to a lifeline from God and from mankind, they are overshadowed by vulnerability wherever they are found. They have drawn God’s wrath upon themselves. They are overshadowed by weakness, too, because they have persistently disbelieved in God’s revelation and killed prophets without any right, all because of their disobedience and boundless transgression 113 ۞ لَیۡسُوا۟ سَوَاۤءࣰۗ مِّنۡ أَهۡلِ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ أُمَّةࣱ قَاۤىِٕمَةࣱ یَتۡلُونَ ءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ ءَانَاۤءَ ٱلَّیۡلِ وَهُمۡ یَسۡجُدُونَ ۝١١٣ laysū sawāan min ahli l-kitābi ummatun qāimatun yatlūna āyāti l-lahi ānāa al-layli wahum yasjudūn But they are not all alike. There are some among the People of the Book who are upright, who recite God’s revelations during the night, who bow down in worship

114 یُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡیَوۡمِ ٱلۡءَاخِرِ وَیَأۡمُرُونَ بِٱلۡمَعۡرُوفِ وَیَنۡهَوۡنَ عَنِ ٱلۡمُنكَرِ وَیُسَـٰرِعُونَ فِی ٱلۡخَیۡرَ ٰتِۖ وَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَ ۝١١٤ yu'minūna bil-lahi wal-yawmi l-ākhiri wayamurūna bil-maʿrūfi wayanhawna ʿani l-munkari wayusāriʿūna fī l-khayrāti wa-ulāika mina l-ṣāliḥīn who believe in God and the Last Day, who order what is right and forbid what is wrong, who are quick to do good deeds. These people are among the righteou

115 وَمَا یَفۡعَلُوا۟ مِنۡ خَیۡرࣲ فَلَن یُكۡفَرُوهُۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِیمُۢ بِٱلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝١١٥ wamā yafʿalū min khayrin falan yuk'farūhu wal-lahu ʿalīmun bil-mutaqīn and they will not be denied [the reward] for whatever good deeds they do: God knows exactly who is conscious of Him 116 إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَن تُغۡنِیَ عَنۡهُمۡ أَمۡوَ ٰلُهُمۡ وَلَاۤ أَوۡلَـٰدُهُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ شَیۡءࣰاۖ وَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ أَصۡحَـٰبُ ٱلنَّارِۖ هُمۡ فِیهَا خَـٰلِدُونَ ۝١١٦ inna alladhīna kafarū lan tugh'niya ʿanhum amwāluhum walā awlāduhum mina l-lahi shayan wa-ulāika aṣḥābu l-nāri hum fīhā khālidūn As for those who disbelieve, neither their possessions nor their children will help them against God- they will be companions in the Fire, there to remain 117 مَثَلُ مَا یُنفِقُونَ فِی هَـٰذِهِ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا كَمَثَلِ رِیحࣲ فِیهَا صِرٌّ أَصَابَتۡ حَرۡثَ قَوۡمࣲ ظَلَمُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَهُمۡ فَأَهۡلَكَتۡهُۚ وَمَا ظَلَمَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَلَـٰكِنۡ أَنفُسَهُمۡ یَظۡلِمُونَ ۝١١٧ mathalu mā yunfiqūna fī hādhihi l-ḥayati l-dun'yā kamathali rīḥin fīhā ṣirrun aṣābat ḥartha qawmin ẓalamū anfusahum fa-ahlakathu wamā ẓalamahumu l-lahu walākin anfusahum yaẓlimūn and whatever they give away in this life will be nullified: a frosty wind strikes and destroys the harvest of people who have wronged themselves. It was not God who wronged them; they wronged themselves 118 یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَتَّخِذُوا۟ بِطَانَةࣰ مِّن دُونِكُمۡ لَا یَأۡلُونَكُمۡ خَبَالࣰا وَدُّوا۟ مَا عَنِتُّمۡ قَدۡ بَدَتِ ٱلۡبَغۡضَاۤءُ مِنۡ أَفۡوَ ٰهِهِمۡ وَمَا تُخۡفِی صُدُورُهُمۡ أَكۡبَرُۚ قَدۡ بَیَّنَّا لَكُمُ ٱلۡءَایَـٰتِۖ إِن كُنتُمۡ تَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١١٨ yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū lā tattakhidhū biṭānatan min dūnikum lā yalūnakum khabālan waddū mā ʿanittum qad badati l-baghḍāu min afwāhihim wamā tukh'fī ṣudūruhum akbaru qad bayyannā lakumu l-āyāti in kuntum taʿqilūn You who believe, do not take for your intimates such outsiders as spare no effort to ruin you and want to see you suffer: their hatred is evident from their mouths, but what their hearts conceal is far worse. We have made Our revelations clear for you; will you not use your reason
