Verse 4:104 in Context

100 ۞ وَمَن یُهَاجِرۡ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ یَجِدۡ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مُرَ ٰغَمࣰا كَثِیرࣰا وَسَعَةࣰۚ وَمَن یَخۡرُجۡ مِنۢ بَیۡتِهِۦ مُهَاجِرًا إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ ثُمَّ یُدۡرِكۡهُ ٱلۡمَوۡتُ فَقَدۡ وَقَعَ أَجۡرُهُۥ عَلَى ٱللَّهِۗ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ غَفُورࣰا رَّحِیمࣰا ۝١٠٠ waman yuhājir fī sabīli l-lahi yajid fī l-arḍi murāghaman kathīran wasaʿatan waman yakhruj min baytihi muhājiran ilā l-lahi warasūlihi thumma yud'rik'hu l-mawtu faqad waqaʿa ajruhu ʿalā l-lahi wakāna l-lahu ghafūran raḥīma and if anyone leaves home as a migrant towards God and His Messenger and is then overtaken by death, his reward from God is sure. God is most forgiving and most merciful 101 وَإِذَا ضَرَبۡتُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَلَیۡسَ عَلَیۡكُمۡ جُنَاحٌ أَن تَقۡصُرُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ إِنۡ خِفۡتُمۡ أَن یَفۡتِنَكُمُ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوۤا۟ۚ إِنَّ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ كَانُوا۟ لَكُمۡ عَدُوࣰّا مُّبِینࣰا ۝١٠١ wa-idhā ḍarabtum fī l-arḍi falaysa ʿalaykum junāḥun an taqṣurū mina l-ṣalati in khif'tum an yaftinakumu alladhīna kafarū inna l-kāfirīna kānū lakum ʿaduwwan mubīna When you [believers] are travelling in the land, you will not be blamed for shortening your prayers, if you fear the disbelievers may harm you: they are your sworn enemies 102 وَإِذَا كُنتَ فِیهِمۡ فَأَقَمۡتَ لَهُمُ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ فَلۡتَقُمۡ طَاۤىِٕفَةࣱ مِّنۡهُم مَّعَكَ وَلۡیَأۡخُذُوۤا۟ أَسۡلِحَتَهُمۡۖ فَإِذَا سَجَدُوا۟ فَلۡیَكُونُوا۟ مِن وَرَاۤىِٕكُمۡ وَلۡتَأۡتِ طَاۤىِٕفَةٌ أُخۡرَىٰ لَمۡ یُصَلُّوا۟ فَلۡیُصَلُّوا۟ مَعَكَ وَلۡیَأۡخُذُوا۟ حِذۡرَهُمۡ وَأَسۡلِحَتَهُمۡۗ وَدَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَوۡ تَغۡفُلُونَ عَنۡ أَسۡلِحَتِكُمۡ وَأَمۡتِعَتِكُمۡ فَیَمِیلُونَ عَلَیۡكُم مَّیۡلَةࣰ وَ ٰحِدَةࣰۚ وَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَیۡكُمۡ إِن كَانَ بِكُمۡ أَذࣰى مِّن مَّطَرٍ أَوۡ كُنتُم مَّرۡضَىٰۤ أَن تَضَعُوۤا۟ أَسۡلِحَتَكُمۡۖ وَخُذُوا۟ حِذۡرَكُمۡۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ أَعَدَّ لِلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ عَذَابࣰا مُّهِینࣰا ۝١٠٢ wa-idhā kunta fīhim fa-aqamta lahumu l-ṣalata faltaqum ṭāifatun min'hum maʿaka walyakhudhū asliḥatahum fa-idhā sajadū falyakūnū min warāikum waltati ṭāifatun ukh'rā lam yuṣallū falyuṣallū maʿaka walyakhudhū ḥidh'rahum wa-asliḥatahum wadda alladhīna kafarū law taghfulūna ʿan asliḥatikum wa-amtiʿatikum fayamīlūna ʿalaykum maylatan wāḥidatan walā junāḥa ʿalaykum in kāna bikum adhan min maṭarin aw kuntum marḍā an taḍaʿū asliḥatakum wakhudhū ḥidh'rakum inna l-laha aʿadda lil'kāfirīna ʿadhāban muhīna When you [Prophet] are with the believers, leading them in prayer, let a group of them stand up in prayer with you, taking their weapons with them, and when they have finished their prostration, let them take up their positions at the back. Then let the other group, who have not yet prayed, pray with you, also on their guard and armed with their weapons: the disbelievers would dearly like you to be heedless of your weapons and baggage, in order for them to take you in a single assault. You will not be blamed if you lay aside your arms when you are overtaken by heavy rain or illness, but be on your guard. Indeed, God has prepared a humiliating punishment for the disbelievers 103 فَإِذَا قَضَیۡتُمُ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ فَٱذۡكُرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ قِیَـٰمࣰا وَقُعُودࣰا وَعَلَىٰ جُنُوبِكُمۡۚ فَإِذَا ٱطۡمَأۡنَنتُمۡ فَأَقِیمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَۚ إِنَّ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ كَانَتۡ عَلَى ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ كِتَـٰبࣰا مَّوۡقُوتࣰا ۝١٠٣ fa-idhā qaḍaytumu l-ṣalata fa-udh'kurū l-laha qiyāman waquʿūdan waʿalā junūbikum fa-idhā iṭ'manantum fa-aqīmū l-ṣalata inna l-ṣalata kānat ʿalā l-mu'minīna kitāban mawqūta After performing the ritual prayer, continue to remember God- standing, sitting, and lying on your sides- and once you are safe, keep up regular prayer, for prayer is obligatory for the believers at prescribed times

104 وَلَا تَهِنُوا۟ فِی ٱبۡتِغَاۤءِ ٱلۡقَوۡمِۖ إِن تَكُونُوا۟ تَأۡلَمُونَ فَإِنَّهُمۡ یَأۡلَمُونَ كَمَا تَأۡلَمُونَۖ وَتَرۡجُونَ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا یَرۡجُونَۗ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ عَلِیمًا حَكِیمًا ۝١٠٤ walā tahinū fī ib'tighāi l-qawmi in takūnū talamūna fa-innahum yalamūna kamā talamūna watarjūna mina l-lahi mā lā yarjūna wakāna l-lahu ʿalīman ḥakīma Do not be faint-hearted in pursuing the enemy: if you are suffering hardship, so are they, but you hope to receive something from God for which they cannot hope. God is all knowing and wise

105 إِنَّاۤ أَنزَلۡنَاۤ إِلَیۡكَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ لِتَحۡكُمَ بَیۡنَ ٱلنَّاسِ بِمَاۤ أَرَىٰكَ ٱللَّهُۚ وَلَا تَكُن لِّلۡخَاۤىِٕنِینَ خَصِیمࣰا ۝١٠٥ innā anzalnā ilayka l-kitāba bil-ḥaqi litaḥkuma bayna l-nāsi bimā arāka l-lahu walā takun lil'khāinīna khaṣīma We have sent down the Scripture to you [Prophet] with the truth so that you can judge between people in accordance with what God has shown you. Do not be an advocate for those who betray trust 106 وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرِ ٱللَّهَۖ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ غَفُورࣰا رَّحِیمࣰا ۝١٠٦ wa-is'taghfiri l-laha inna l-laha kāna ghafūran raḥīma Ask God for forgiveness: He is most forgiving and merciful 107 وَلَا تُجَـٰدِلۡ عَنِ ٱلَّذِینَ یَخۡتَانُونَ أَنفُسَهُمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یُحِبُّ مَن كَانَ خَوَّانًا أَثِیمࣰا ۝١٠٧ walā tujādil ʿani alladhīna yakhtānūna anfusahum inna l-laha lā yuḥibbu man kāna khawwānan athīma Do not argue for those who betray their own souls: God does not love anyone given to treachery and sin 108 یَسۡتَخۡفُونَ مِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَا یَسۡتَخۡفُونَ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ وَهُوَ مَعَهُمۡ إِذۡ یُبَیِّتُونَ مَا لَا یَرۡضَىٰ مِنَ ٱلۡقَوۡلِۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ بِمَا یَعۡمَلُونَ مُحِیطًا ۝١٠٨ yastakhfūna mina l-nāsi walā yastakhfūna mina l-lahi wahuwa maʿahum idh yubayyitūna mā lā yarḍā mina l-qawli wakāna l-lahu bimā yaʿmalūna muḥīṭa They try to hide themselves from people, but they cannot hide from God. He is with them when they plot at night, saying things that do not please Him: He is fully aware of everything they do
