Verse 4:65 in Context

61 وَإِذَا قِیلَ لَهُمۡ تَعَالَوۡا۟ إِلَىٰ مَاۤ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ وَإِلَى ٱلرَّسُولِ رَأَیۡتَ ٱلۡمُنَـٰفِقِینَ یَصُدُّونَ عَنكَ صُدُودࣰا ۝٦١ wa-idhā qīla lahum taʿālaw ilā mā anzala l-lahu wa-ilā l-rasūli ra-ayta l-munāfiqīna yaṣuddūna ʿanka ṣudūda When they are told, ‘Turn to God’s revelations and the Messenger [for judgement],’ you see the hypocrites turn right away from you [Prophet] 62 فَكَیۡفَ إِذَاۤ أَصَـٰبَتۡهُم مُّصِیبَةُۢ بِمَا قَدَّمَتۡ أَیۡدِیهِمۡ ثُمَّ جَاۤءُوكَ یَحۡلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ إِنۡ أَرَدۡنَاۤ إِلَّاۤ إِحۡسَـٰنࣰا وَتَوۡفِیقًا ۝٦٢ fakayfa idhā aṣābathum muṣībatun bimā qaddamat aydīhim thumma jāūka yaḥlifūna bil-lahi in aradnā illā iḥ'sānan watawfīqa If disaster strikes them because of what they themselves have done, then they will come to you, swearing by God, ‘We only wanted to do good and achieve harmony.’ 63 أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ ٱلَّذِینَ یَعۡلَمُ ٱللَّهُ مَا فِی قُلُوبِهِمۡ فَأَعۡرِضۡ عَنۡهُمۡ وَعِظۡهُمۡ وَقُل لَّهُمۡ فِیۤ أَنفُسِهِمۡ قَوۡلَۢا بَلِیغࣰا ۝٦٣ ulāika alladhīna yaʿlamu l-lahu mā fī qulūbihim fa-aʿriḍ ʿanhum waʿiẓ'hum waqul lahum fī anfusihim qawlan balīgha God knows well what is in the hearts of these people, so ignore what they say, instruct them, and speak to them about themselves using penetrating words 64 وَمَاۤ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا لِیُطَاعَ بِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِۚ وَلَوۡ أَنَّهُمۡ إِذ ظَّلَمُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَهُمۡ جَاۤءُوكَ فَٱسۡتَغۡفَرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱسۡتَغۡفَرَ لَهُمُ ٱلرَّسُولُ لَوَجَدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ تَوَّابࣰا رَّحِیمࣰا ۝٦٤ wamā arsalnā min rasūlin illā liyuṭāʿa bi-idh'ni l-lahi walaw annahum idh ẓalamū anfusahum jāūka fa-is'taghfarū l-laha wa-is'taghfara lahumu l-rasūlu lawajadū l-laha tawwāban raḥīma All the messengers We sent were meant to be obeyed, by God’s leave. If only [the hypocrites] had come to you [Prophet] when they wronged themselves, and begged God’s forgiveness, and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found that God accepts repentance and is most merciful
65 فَلَا وَرَبِّكَ لَا یُؤۡمِنُونَ حَتَّىٰ یُحَكِّمُوكَ فِیمَا شَجَرَ بَیۡنَهُمۡ ثُمَّ لَا یَجِدُوا۟ فِیۤ أَنفُسِهِمۡ حَرَجࣰا مِّمَّا قَضَیۡتَ وَیُسَلِّمُوا۟ تَسۡلِیمࣰا ۝٦٥ falā warabbika lā yu'minūna ḥattā yuḥakkimūka fīmā shajara baynahum thumma lā yajidū fī anfusihim ḥarajan mimmā qaḍayta wayusallimū taslīma By your Lord, they will not be true believers until they let you decide between them in all matters of dispute, and find no resistance in their souls to your decisions, accepting them totally
66 وَلَوۡ أَنَّا كَتَبۡنَا عَلَیۡهِمۡ أَنِ ٱقۡتُلُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَكُمۡ أَوِ ٱخۡرُجُوا۟ مِن دِیَـٰرِكُم مَّا فَعَلُوهُ إِلَّا قَلِیلࣱ مِّنۡهُمۡۖ وَلَوۡ أَنَّهُمۡ فَعَلُوا۟ مَا یُوعَظُونَ بِهِۦ لَكَانَ خَیۡرࣰا لَّهُمۡ وَأَشَدَّ تَثۡبِیتࣰا ۝٦٦ walaw annā katabnā ʿalayhim ani uq'tulū anfusakum awi ukh'rujū min diyārikum mā faʿalūhu illā qalīlun min'hum walaw annahum faʿalū mā yūʿaẓūna bihi lakāna khayran lahum wa-ashadda tathbīta if We had ordered, ‘Lay down your lives’ or ‘Leave your homes,’ they would not have done so, except for a few- it would have been far better for them and stronger confirmation of their faith, if they had done as they were told 67 وَإِذࣰا لَّءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُم مِّن لَّدُنَّاۤ أَجۡرًا عَظِیمࣰا ۝٦٧ wa-idhan laātaynāhum min ladunnā ajran ʿaẓīma and We would have given them a rich reward of Our ow 68 وَلَهَدَیۡنَـٰهُمۡ صِرَ ٰطࣰا مُّسۡتَقِیمࣰا ۝٦٨ walahadaynāhum ṣirāṭan mus'taqīma and guided them to a straight path 69 وَمَن یُطِعِ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلرَّسُولَ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ مَعَ ٱلَّذِینَ أَنۡعَمَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَیۡهِم مِّنَ ٱلنَّبِیِّـۧنَ وَٱلصِّدِّیقِینَ وَٱلشُّهَدَاۤءِ وَٱلصَّـٰلِحِینَۚ وَحَسُنَ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ رَفِیقࣰا ۝٦٩ waman yuṭiʿi l-laha wal-rasūla fa-ulāika maʿa alladhīna anʿama l-lahu ʿalayhim mina l-nabiyīna wal-ṣidīqīna wal-shuhadāi wal-ṣāliḥīna waḥasuna ulāika rafīqa Whoever obeys God and the Messenger will be among those He has blessed: the messengers, the truthful, those who bear witness to the truth, and the righteous- what excellent companions these are
