Verse 5:102 in Context

98 ٱعۡلَمُوۤا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ شَدِیدُ ٱلۡعِقَابِ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورࣱ رَّحِیمࣱ ۝٩٨ iʿ'lamū anna l-laha shadīdu l-ʿiqābi wa-anna l-laha ghafūrun raḥīmu Know too that God is severe in punishment yet most forgiving and merciful 99 مَّا عَلَى ٱلرَّسُولِ إِلَّا ٱلۡبَلَـٰغُۗ وَٱللَّهُ یَعۡلَمُ مَا تُبۡدُونَ وَمَا تَكۡتُمُونَ ۝٩٩ mā ʿalā l-rasūli illā l-balāghu wal-lahu yaʿlamu mā tub'dūna wamā taktumūn The Messenger’s duty is only to deliver the message: God knows what you reveal and what you conceal 100 قُل لَّا یَسۡتَوِی ٱلۡخَبِیثُ وَٱلطَّیِّبُ وَلَوۡ أَعۡجَبَكَ كَثۡرَةُ ٱلۡخَبِیثِۚ فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ یَـٰۤأُو۟لِی ٱلۡأَلۡبَـٰبِ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تُفۡلِحُونَ ۝١٠٠ qul lā yastawī l-khabīthu wal-ṭayibu walaw aʿjabaka kathratu l-khabīthi fa-ittaqū l-laha yāulī l-albābi laʿallakum tuf'liḥūn Say [Prophet], ‘Bad cannot be likened to good, though you may be dazzled by how abundant the bad is. Be mindful of God, people of understanding, so that you may prosper.’ 101 یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَسۡءَلُوا۟ عَنۡ أَشۡیَاۤءَ إِن تُبۡدَ لَكُمۡ تَسُؤۡكُمۡ وَإِن تَسۡءَلُوا۟ عَنۡهَا حِینَ یُنَزَّلُ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانُ تُبۡدَ لَكُمۡ عَفَا ٱللَّهُ عَنۡهَاۗ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورٌ حَلِیمࣱ ۝١٠١ yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū lā tasalū ʿan ashyāa in tub'da lakum tasu'kum wa-in tasalū ʿanhā ḥīna yunazzalu l-qur'ānu tub'da lakum ʿafā l-lahu ʿanhā wal-lahu ghafūrun ḥalīmu You who believe, do not ask about matters which, if made known to you, might make things difficult for you- if you ask about them while the Quran is being revealed, they will be made known to you- for God has kept silent about them: God is most forgiving and forbearing

102 قَدۡ سَأَلَهَا قَوۡمࣱ مِّن قَبۡلِكُمۡ ثُمَّ أَصۡبَحُوا۟ بِهَا كَـٰفِرِینَ ۝١٠٢ qad sa-alahā qawmun min qablikum thumma aṣbaḥū bihā kāfirīn Before you, some people asked about things, then ignored [the answers]

103 مَا جَعَلَ ٱللَّهُ مِنۢ بَحِیرَةࣲ وَلَا سَاۤىِٕبَةࣲ وَلَا وَصِیلَةࣲ وَلَا حَامࣲ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ یَفۡتَرُونَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡكَذِبَۖ وَأَكۡثَرُهُمۡ لَا یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٠٣ mā jaʿala l-lahu min baḥīratin walā sāibatin walā waṣīlatin walā ḥāmin walākinna alladhīna kafarū yaftarūna ʿalā l-lahi l-kadhiba wa-aktharuhum lā yaʿqilūn God did not institute the dedication of such things as bahira, saiba, wasila, or ham to idols; but the disbelievers invent lies about God. Most of them do not use reason 104 وَإِذَا قِیلَ لَهُمۡ تَعَالَوۡا۟ إِلَىٰ مَاۤ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ وَإِلَى ٱلرَّسُولِ قَالُوا۟ حَسۡبُنَا مَا وَجَدۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ ءَابَاۤءَنَاۤۚ أَوَ لَوۡ كَانَ ءَابَاۤؤُهُمۡ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ شَیۡءࣰا وَلَا یَهۡتَدُونَ ۝١٠٤ wa-idhā qīla lahum taʿālaw ilā mā anzala l-lahu wa-ilā l-rasūli qālū ḥasbunā mā wajadnā ʿalayhi ābāanā awalaw kāna ābāuhum lā yaʿlamūna shayan walā yahtadūn when it is said to them, ‘Come to what God has sent down, and to the Messenger,’ they say, ‘What we inherited from our forefathers is good enough for us,’ even though their forefathers knew nothing and were not guided 105 یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ عَلَیۡكُمۡ أَنفُسَكُمۡۖ لَا یَضُرُّكُم مَّن ضَلَّ إِذَا ٱهۡتَدَیۡتُمۡۚ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ مَرۡجِعُكُمۡ جَمِیعࣰا فَیُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٠٥ yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū ʿalaykum anfusakum lā yaḍurrukum man ḍalla idhā ih'tadaytum ilā l-lahi marjiʿukum jamīʿan fayunabbi-ukum bimā kuntum taʿmalūn You who believe, you are responsible for your own souls; if anyone else goes astray it will not harm you so long as you follow the guidance; you will all return to God, and He will make you realize what you have done 106 یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ شَهَـٰدَةُ بَیۡنِكُمۡ إِذَا حَضَرَ أَحَدَكُمُ ٱلۡمَوۡتُ حِینَ ٱلۡوَصِیَّةِ ٱثۡنَانِ ذَوَا عَدۡلࣲ مِّنكُمۡ أَوۡ ءَاخَرَانِ مِنۡ غَیۡرِكُمۡ إِنۡ أَنتُمۡ ضَرَبۡتُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَأَصَـٰبَتۡكُم مُّصِیبَةُ ٱلۡمَوۡتِۚ تَحۡبِسُونَهُمَا مِنۢ بَعۡدِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ فَیُقۡسِمَانِ بِٱللَّهِ إِنِ ٱرۡتَبۡتُمۡ لَا نَشۡتَرِی بِهِۦ ثَمَنࣰا وَلَوۡ كَانَ ذَا قُرۡبَىٰ وَلَا نَكۡتُمُ شَهَـٰدَةَ ٱللَّهِ إِنَّاۤ إِذࣰا لَّمِنَ ٱلۡءَاثِمِینَ ۝١٠٦ yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū shahādatu baynikum idhā ḥaḍara aḥadakumu l-mawtu ḥīna l-waṣiyati ith'nāni dhawā ʿadlin minkum aw ākharāni min ghayrikum in antum ḍarabtum fī l-arḍi fa-aṣābatkum muṣībatu l-mawti taḥbisūnahumā min baʿdi l-ṣalati fayuq'simāni bil-lahi ini ir'tabtum lā nashtarī bihi thamanan walaw kāna dhā qur'bā walā naktumu shahādata l-lahi innā idhan lamina l-āthimīn You who believe, when death approaches any of you, let two just men from among you act as witnesses to the making of a bequest, or two men from another people if you are journeying in the land when death approaches. Keep the two witnesses back after prayer, if you have any doubts, and make them both swear by God, ‘We will not sell our testimony for any price, even if a close relative is involved. We will not hide God’s testimony, for then we should be doing wrong.’
