Verse 5:106 in Context

102 قَدۡ سَأَلَهَا قَوۡمࣱ مِّن قَبۡلِكُمۡ ثُمَّ أَصۡبَحُوا۟ بِهَا كَـٰفِرِینَ ۝١٠٢ qad sa-alahā qawmun min qablikum thumma aṣbaḥū bihā kāfirīn Before you, some people asked about things, then ignored [the answers] 103 مَا جَعَلَ ٱللَّهُ مِنۢ بَحِیرَةࣲ وَلَا سَاۤىِٕبَةࣲ وَلَا وَصِیلَةࣲ وَلَا حَامࣲ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ یَفۡتَرُونَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡكَذِبَۖ وَأَكۡثَرُهُمۡ لَا یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝١٠٣ mā jaʿala l-lahu min baḥīratin walā sāibatin walā waṣīlatin walā ḥāmin walākinna alladhīna kafarū yaftarūna ʿalā l-lahi l-kadhiba wa-aktharuhum lā yaʿqilūn God did not institute the dedication of such things as bahira, saiba, wasila, or ham to idols; but the disbelievers invent lies about God. Most of them do not use reason 104 وَإِذَا قِیلَ لَهُمۡ تَعَالَوۡا۟ إِلَىٰ مَاۤ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ وَإِلَى ٱلرَّسُولِ قَالُوا۟ حَسۡبُنَا مَا وَجَدۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ ءَابَاۤءَنَاۤۚ أَوَ لَوۡ كَانَ ءَابَاۤؤُهُمۡ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ شَیۡءࣰا وَلَا یَهۡتَدُونَ ۝١٠٤ wa-idhā qīla lahum taʿālaw ilā mā anzala l-lahu wa-ilā l-rasūli qālū ḥasbunā mā wajadnā ʿalayhi ābāanā awalaw kāna ābāuhum lā yaʿlamūna shayan walā yahtadūn when it is said to them, ‘Come to what God has sent down, and to the Messenger,’ they say, ‘What we inherited from our forefathers is good enough for us,’ even though their forefathers knew nothing and were not guided 105 یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ عَلَیۡكُمۡ أَنفُسَكُمۡۖ لَا یَضُرُّكُم مَّن ضَلَّ إِذَا ٱهۡتَدَیۡتُمۡۚ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ مَرۡجِعُكُمۡ جَمِیعࣰا فَیُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٠٥ yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū ʿalaykum anfusakum lā yaḍurrukum man ḍalla idhā ih'tadaytum ilā l-lahi marjiʿukum jamīʿan fayunabbi-ukum bimā kuntum taʿmalūn You who believe, you are responsible for your own souls; if anyone else goes astray it will not harm you so long as you follow the guidance; you will all return to God, and He will make you realize what you have done
106 یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ شَهَـٰدَةُ بَیۡنِكُمۡ إِذَا حَضَرَ أَحَدَكُمُ ٱلۡمَوۡتُ حِینَ ٱلۡوَصِیَّةِ ٱثۡنَانِ ذَوَا عَدۡلࣲ مِّنكُمۡ أَوۡ ءَاخَرَانِ مِنۡ غَیۡرِكُمۡ إِنۡ أَنتُمۡ ضَرَبۡتُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَأَصَـٰبَتۡكُم مُّصِیبَةُ ٱلۡمَوۡتِۚ تَحۡبِسُونَهُمَا مِنۢ بَعۡدِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ فَیُقۡسِمَانِ بِٱللَّهِ إِنِ ٱرۡتَبۡتُمۡ لَا نَشۡتَرِی بِهِۦ ثَمَنࣰا وَلَوۡ كَانَ ذَا قُرۡبَىٰ وَلَا نَكۡتُمُ شَهَـٰدَةَ ٱللَّهِ إِنَّاۤ إِذࣰا لَّمِنَ ٱلۡءَاثِمِینَ ۝١٠٦ yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū shahādatu baynikum idhā ḥaḍara aḥadakumu l-mawtu ḥīna l-waṣiyati ith'nāni dhawā ʿadlin minkum aw ākharāni min ghayrikum in antum ḍarabtum fī l-arḍi fa-aṣābatkum muṣībatu l-mawti taḥbisūnahumā min baʿdi l-ṣalati fayuq'simāni bil-lahi ini ir'tabtum lā nashtarī bihi thamanan walaw kāna dhā qur'bā walā naktumu shahādata l-lahi innā idhan lamina l-āthimīn You who believe, when death approaches any of you, let two just men from among you act as witnesses to the making of a bequest, or two men from another people if you are journeying in the land when death approaches. Keep the two witnesses back after prayer, if you have any doubts, and make them both swear by God, ‘We will not sell our testimony for any price, even if a close relative is involved. We will not hide God’s testimony, for then we should be doing wrong.’
107 فَإِنۡ عُثِرَ عَلَىٰۤ أَنَّهُمَا ٱسۡتَحَقَّاۤ إِثۡمࣰا فَءَاخَرَانِ یَقُومَانِ مَقَامَهُمَا مِنَ ٱلَّذِینَ ٱسۡتَحَقَّ عَلَیۡهِمُ ٱلۡأَوۡلَیَـٰنِ فَیُقۡسِمَانِ بِٱللَّهِ لَشَهَـٰدَتُنَاۤ أَحَقُّ مِن شَهَـٰدَتِهِمَا وَمَا ٱعۡتَدَیۡنَاۤ إِنَّاۤ إِذࣰا لَّمِنَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝١٠٧ fa-in ʿuthira ʿalā annahumā is'taḥaqqā ith'man faākharāni yaqūmāni maqāmahumā mina alladhīna is'taḥaqqa ʿalayhimu l-awlayāni fayuq'simāni bil-lahi lashahādatunā aḥaqqu min shahādatihimā wamā iʿ'tadaynā innā idhan lamina l-ẓālimīn If it is discovered that these two are guilty [of perjury], two of those whose rights have been usurped have a better right to bear witness in their place. Let them swear by God, ‘Our testimony is truer than theirs. We have said nothing but the truth, for that would make us wrongdoers’ 108 ذَ ٰلِكَ أَدۡنَىٰۤ أَن یَأۡتُوا۟ بِٱلشَّهَـٰدَةِ عَلَىٰ وَجۡهِهَاۤ أَوۡ یَخَافُوۤا۟ أَن تُرَدَّ أَیۡمَـٰنُۢ بَعۡدَ أَیۡمَـٰنِهِمۡۗ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱسۡمَعُوا۟ۗ وَٱللَّهُ لَا یَهۡدِی ٱلۡقَوۡمَ ٱلۡفَـٰسِقِینَ ۝١٠٨ dhālika adnā an yatū bil-shahādati ʿalā wajhihā aw yakhāfū an turadda aymānun baʿda aymānihim wa-ittaqū l-laha wa-is'maʿū wal-lahu lā yahdī l-qawma l-fāsiqīn that will make it more likely they will give true and proper testimony, or fear that their oaths might be refuted by others afterwards. Be mindful of God and listen; God does not guide those who break His laws 109 ۞ یَوۡمَ یَجۡمَعُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلرُّسُلَ فَیَقُولُ مَاذَاۤ أُجِبۡتُمۡۖ قَالُوا۟ لَا عِلۡمَ لَنَاۤۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ عَلَّـٰمُ ٱلۡغُیُوبِ ۝١٠٩ yawma yajmaʿu l-lahu l-rusula fayaqūlu mādhā ujib'tum qālū lā ʿil'ma lanā innaka anta ʿallāmu l-ghuyūb On the Day when God assembles all the messengers and asks, ‘What response did you receive?’ they will say, ‘We do not have that knowledge: You alone know things that cannot be seen.’ 110 إِذۡ قَالَ ٱللَّهُ یَـٰعِیسَى ٱبۡنَ مَرۡیَمَ ٱذۡكُرۡ نِعۡمَتِی عَلَیۡكَ وَعَلَىٰ وَ ٰلِدَتِكَ إِذۡ أَیَّدتُّكَ بِرُوحِ ٱلۡقُدُسِ تُكَلِّمُ ٱلنَّاسَ فِی ٱلۡمَهۡدِ وَكَهۡلࣰاۖ وَإِذۡ عَلَّمۡتُكَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلۡحِكۡمَةَ وَٱلتَّوۡرَىٰةَ وَٱلۡإِنجِیلَۖ وَإِذۡ تَخۡلُقُ مِنَ ٱلطِّینِ كَهَیۡءَةِ ٱلطَّیۡرِ بِإِذۡنِی فَتَنفُخُ فِیهَا فَتَكُونُ طَیۡرَۢا بِإِذۡنِیۖ وَتُبۡرِئُ ٱلۡأَكۡمَهَ وَٱلۡأَبۡرَصَ بِإِذۡنِیۖ وَإِذۡ تُخۡرِجُ ٱلۡمَوۡتَىٰ بِإِذۡنِیۖ وَإِذۡ كَفَفۡتُ بَنِیۤ إِسۡرَ ٰۤءِیلَ عَنكَ إِذۡ جِئۡتَهُم بِٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِ فَقَالَ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِنۡهُمۡ إِنۡ هَـٰذَاۤ إِلَّا سِحۡرࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝١١٠ idh qāla l-lahu yāʿīsā ib'na maryama udh'kur niʿ'matī ʿalayka waʿalā wālidatika idh ayyadttuka birūḥi l-qudusi tukallimu l-nāsa fī l-mahdi wakahlan wa-idh ʿallamtuka l-kitāba wal-ḥik'mata wal-tawrāta wal-injīla wa-idh takhluqu mina l-ṭīni kahayati l-ṭayri bi-idh'nī fatanfukhu fīhā fatakūnu ṭayran bi-idh'nī watub'ri-u l-akmaha wal-abraṣa bi-idh'nī wa-idh tukh'riju l-mawtā bi-idh'nī wa-idh kafaftu banī is'rāīla ʿanka idh ji'tahum bil-bayināti faqāla alladhīna kafarū min'hum in hādhā illā siḥ'run mubīnu Then God will say, ‘Jesus, son of Mary! Remember My favour to you and to your mother: how I strengthened you with the holy spirit, so that you spoke to people in your infancy and as a grown man; how I taught you the Scripture and wisdom, the Torah and the Gospel; how, by My leave, you fashioned the shape of a bird out of clay, breathed into it, and it became, by My leave, a bird; how, by My leave, you healed the blind person and the leper; how, by My leave, you brought the dead back to life; how I restrained the Children of Israel from [harming] you when you brought them clear signs, and those of them who disbelieved said, “This is clearly nothing but sorcery”
