Verse 5:18 in Context

14 وَمِنَ ٱلَّذِینَ قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّا نَصَـٰرَىٰۤ أَخَذۡنَا مِیثَـٰقَهُمۡ فَنَسُوا۟ حَظࣰّا مِّمَّا ذُكِّرُوا۟ بِهِۦ فَأَغۡرَیۡنَا بَیۡنَهُمُ ٱلۡعَدَاوَةَ وَٱلۡبَغۡضَاۤءَ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ ٱلۡقِیَـٰمَةِۚ وَسَوۡفَ یُنَبِّئُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ یَصۡنَعُونَ ۝١٤ wamina alladhīna qālū innā naṣārā akhadhnā mīthāqahum fanasū ḥaẓẓan mimmā dhukkirū bihi fa-aghraynā baynahumu l-ʿadāwata wal-baghḍāa ilā yawmi l-qiyāmati wasawfa yunabbi-uhumu l-lahu bimā kānū yaṣnaʿūn We also took a pledge from those who say, ‘We are Christians,’ but they too forgot some of what they were told to remember, so We stirred up enmity and hatred among them until the Day of Resurrection, when God will tell them what they have done 15 یَـٰۤأَهۡلَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ قَدۡ جَاۤءَكُمۡ رَسُولُنَا یُبَیِّنُ لَكُمۡ كَثِیرࣰا مِّمَّا كُنتُمۡ تُخۡفُونَ مِنَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ وَیَعۡفُوا۟ عَن كَثِیرࣲۚ قَدۡ جَاۤءَكُم مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ نُورࣱ وَكِتَـٰبࣱ مُّبِینࣱ ۝١٥ yāahla l-kitābi qad jāakum rasūlunā yubayyinu lakum kathīran mimmā kuntum tukh'fūna mina l-kitābi wayaʿfū ʿan kathīrin qad jāakum mina l-lahi nūrun wakitābun mubīnu People of the Book, Our Messenger has come to make clear to you much of what you have kept hidden of the Scripture, and to overlook much [you have done]. A light has now come to you from God, and a Scripture making things clear 16 یَهۡدِی بِهِ ٱللَّهُ مَنِ ٱتَّبَعَ رِضۡوَ ٰنَهُۥ سُبُلَ ٱلسَّلَـٰمِ وَیُخۡرِجُهُم مِّنَ ٱلظُّلُمَـٰتِ إِلَى ٱلنُّورِ بِإِذۡنِهِۦ وَیَهۡدِیهِمۡ إِلَىٰ صِرَ ٰطࣲ مُّسۡتَقِیمࣲ ۝١٦ yahdī bihi l-lahu mani ittabaʿa riḍ'wānahu subula l-salāmi wayukh'rijuhum mina l-ẓulumāti ilā l-nūri bi-idh'nihi wayahdīhim ilā ṣirāṭin mus'taqīmi with which God guides to the ways of peace those who follow what pleases Him, bringing them from darkness out into light, by His will, and guiding them to a straight path 17 لَّقَدۡ كَفَرَ ٱلَّذِینَ قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلۡمَسِیحُ ٱبۡنُ مَرۡیَمَۚ قُلۡ فَمَن یَمۡلِكُ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ شَیۡءًا إِنۡ أَرَادَ أَن یُهۡلِكَ ٱلۡمَسِیحَ ٱبۡنَ مَرۡیَمَ وَأُمَّهُۥ وَمَن فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ جَمِیعࣰاۗ وَلِلَّهِ مُلۡكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَاۚ یَخۡلُقُ مَا یَشَاۤءُۚ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ قَدِیرࣱ ۝١٧ laqad kafara alladhīna qālū inna l-laha huwa l-masīḥu ub'nu maryama qul faman yamliku mina l-lahi shayan in arāda an yuh'lika l-masīḥa ib'na maryama wa-ummahu waman fī l-arḍi jamīʿan walillahi mul'ku l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wamā baynahumā yakhluqu mā yashāu wal-lahu ʿalā kulli shayin qadīru Those who say, ‘God is the Messiah, the son of Mary,’ are defying the truth. Say, ‘If it had been God’s will, could anyone have prevented Him from destroying the Messiah, son of Mary, together with his mother and everyone else on earth? Control of the heavens and earth and all that is between them belongs to God: He creates whatever He will. God has power over everything.’

18 وَقَالَتِ ٱلۡیَهُودُ وَٱلنَّصَـٰرَىٰ نَحۡنُ أَبۡنَـٰۤؤُا۟ ٱللَّهِ وَأَحِبَّـٰۤؤُهُۥۚ قُلۡ فَلِمَ یُعَذِّبُكُم بِذُنُوبِكُمۖ بَلۡ أَنتُم بَشَرࣱ مِّمَّنۡ خَلَقَۚ یَغۡفِرُ لِمَن یَشَاۤءُ وَیُعَذِّبُ مَن یَشَاۤءُۚ وَلِلَّهِ مُلۡكُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَاۖ وَإِلَیۡهِ ٱلۡمَصِیرُ ۝١٨ waqālati l-yahūdu wal-naṣārā naḥnu abnāu l-lahi wa-aḥibbāuhu qul falima yuʿadhibukum bidhunūbikum bal antum basharun mimman khalaqa yaghfiru liman yashāu wayuʿadhibu man yashāu walillahi mul'ku l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wamā baynahumā wa-ilayhi l-maṣīr The Jews and the Christians say, ‘We are the children of God and His beloved ones.’ Say, ‘Then why does He punish you for your sins? You are merely human beings, part of His creation: He forgives whoever He will and punishes whoever He will. Control of the heavens and earth and all that is between them belongs to Him: all journeys lead to Him.’

19 یَـٰۤأَهۡلَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ قَدۡ جَاۤءَكُمۡ رَسُولُنَا یُبَیِّنُ لَكُمۡ عَلَىٰ فَتۡرَةࣲ مِّنَ ٱلرُّسُلِ أَن تَقُولُوا۟ مَا جَاۤءَنَا مِنۢ بَشِیرࣲ وَلَا نَذِیرࣲۖ فَقَدۡ جَاۤءَكُم بَشِیرࣱ وَنَذِیرࣱۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ قَدِیرࣱ ۝١٩ yāahla l-kitābi qad jāakum rasūlunā yubayyinu lakum ʿalā fatratin mina l-rusuli an taqūlū mā jāanā min bashīrin walā nadhīrin faqad jāakum bashīrun wanadhīrun wal-lahu ʿalā kulli shayin qadīru People of the Book, Our Messenger comes to you now, after a break in the sequence of messengers, to make things clear for you in case you should say, ‘No one has come to give us good news or to warn us.’ So someone has come to you, to give you good news and warn you: God has the power to do all things 20 وَإِذۡ قَالَ مُوسَىٰ لِقَوۡمِهِۦ یَـٰقَوۡمِ ٱذۡكُرُوا۟ نِعۡمَةَ ٱللَّهِ عَلَیۡكُمۡ إِذۡ جَعَلَ فِیكُمۡ أَنۢبِیَاۤءَ وَجَعَلَكُم مُّلُوكࣰا وَءَاتَىٰكُم مَّا لَمۡ یُؤۡتِ أَحَدࣰا مِّنَ ٱلۡعَـٰلَمِینَ ۝٢٠ wa-idh qāla mūsā liqawmihi yāqawmi udh'kurū niʿ'mata l-lahi ʿalaykum idh jaʿala fīkum anbiyāa wajaʿalakum mulūkan waātākum mā lam yu'ti aḥadan mina l-ʿālamīn Moses said to his people, ‘My people, remember God’s blessing on you: how He raised prophets among you and appointed kings for you and gave you what he had not given to any other people 21 یَـٰقَوۡمِ ٱدۡخُلُوا۟ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ ٱلۡمُقَدَّسَةَ ٱلَّتِی كَتَبَ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمۡ وَلَا تَرۡتَدُّوا۟ عَلَىٰۤ أَدۡبَارِكُمۡ فَتَنقَلِبُوا۟ خَـٰسِرِینَ ۝٢١ yāqawmi ud'khulū l-arḍa l-muqadasata allatī kataba l-lahu lakum walā tartaddū ʿalā adbārikum fatanqalibū khāsirīn My people, go into the holy land which God has ordained for you––do not turn back or you will be the losers.’ 22 قَالُوا۟ یَـٰمُوسَىٰۤ إِنَّ فِیهَا قَوۡمࣰا جَبَّارِینَ وَإِنَّا لَن نَّدۡخُلَهَا حَتَّىٰ یَخۡرُجُوا۟ مِنۡهَا فَإِن یَخۡرُجُوا۟ مِنۡهَا فَإِنَّا دَ ٰخِلُونَ ۝٢٢ qālū yāmūsā inna fīhā qawman jabbārīna wa-innā lan nadkhulahā ḥattā yakhrujū min'hā fa-in yakhrujū min'hā fa-innā dākhilūn They said, ‘Moses, there is a fearsome people in this land. We will not go there until they leave. If they leave, then we will enter.’
