Verse 7:17 in Context

13 قَالَ فَٱهۡبِطۡ مِنۡهَا فَمَا یَكُونُ لَكَ أَن تَتَكَبَّرَ فِیهَا فَٱخۡرُجۡ إِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰغِرِینَ ۝١٣ qāla fa-ih'biṭ min'hā famā yakūnu laka an tatakabbara fīhā fa-ukh'ruj innaka mina l-ṣāghirīn God said, ‘Get down from here! This is no place for your arrogance. Get out! You are contemptible!’ 14 قَالَ أَنظِرۡنِیۤ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ یُبۡعَثُونَ ۝١٤ qāla anẓir'nī ilā yawmi yub'ʿathūn but Iblis said, ‘Give me respite until the Day people are raised from the dead,’ 15 قَالَ إِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُنظَرِینَ ۝١٥ qāla innaka mina l-munẓarīn and God replied, ‘You have respite.’ 16 قَالَ فَبِمَاۤ أَغۡوَیۡتَنِی لَأَقۡعُدَنَّ لَهُمۡ صِرَ ٰطَكَ ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِیمَ ۝١٦ qāla fabimā aghwaytanī la-aqʿudanna lahum ṣirāṭaka l-mus'taqīm And then Iblis said, ‘Because You have put me in the wrong, I will lie in wait for them all on Your straight path
17 ثُمَّ لَءَاتِیَنَّهُم مِّنۢ بَیۡنِ أَیۡدِیهِمۡ وَمِنۡ خَلۡفِهِمۡ وَعَنۡ أَیۡمَـٰنِهِمۡ وَعَن شَمَاۤىِٕلِهِمۡۖ وَلَا تَجِدُ أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ شَـٰكِرِینَ ۝١٧ thumma laātiyannahum min bayni aydīhim wamin khalfihim waʿan aymānihim waʿan shamāilihim walā tajidu aktharahum shākirīn I will come at them- from their front and their back, from their right and their left- and You will find that most of them are ungrateful.’
18 قَالَ ٱخۡرُجۡ مِنۡهَا مَذۡءُومࣰا مَّدۡحُورࣰاۖ لَّمَن تَبِعَكَ مِنۡهُمۡ لَأَمۡلَأَنَّ جَهَنَّمَ مِنكُمۡ أَجۡمَعِینَ ۝١٨ qāla ukh'ruj min'hā madhūman madḥūran laman tabiʿaka min'hum la-amla-anna jahannama minkum ajmaʿīn God said, ‘Get out! You are disgraced and banished! I swear I shall fill Hell with you and all who follow you 19 وَیَـٰۤءَادَمُ ٱسۡكُنۡ أَنتَ وَزَوۡجُكَ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ فَكُلَا مِنۡ حَیۡثُ شِئۡتُمَا وَلَا تَقۡرَبَا هَـٰذِهِ ٱلشَّجَرَةَ فَتَكُونَا مِنَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِینَ ۝١٩ wayāādamu us'kun anta wazawjuka l-janata fakulā min ḥaythu shi'tumā walā taqrabā hādhihi l-shajarata fatakūnā mina l-ẓālimīn But you and your wife, Adam, live in the Garden. Both of you eat whatever you like, but do not go near this tree or you will become wrongdoers.’ 20 فَوَسۡوَسَ لَهُمَا ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُ لِیُبۡدِیَ لَهُمَا مَا وُۥرِیَ عَنۡهُمَا مِن سَوۡءَ ٰتِهِمَا وَقَالَ مَا نَهَىٰكُمَا رَبُّكُمَا عَنۡ هَـٰذِهِ ٱلشَّجَرَةِ إِلَّاۤ أَن تَكُونَا مَلَكَیۡنِ أَوۡ تَكُونَا مِنَ ٱلۡخَـٰلِدِینَ ۝٢٠ fawaswasa lahumā l-shayṭānu liyub'diya lahumā mā wūriya ʿanhumā min sawātihimā waqāla mā nahākumā rabbukumā ʿan hādhihi l-shajarati illā an takūnā malakayni aw takūnā mina l-khālidīn Satan whispered to them so as to expose their nakedness, which had been hidden from them: he said, ‘Your Lord only forbade you this tree to prevent you becoming angels or immortals,’ 21 وَقَاسَمَهُمَاۤ إِنِّی لَكُمَا لَمِنَ ٱلنَّـٰصِحِینَ ۝٢١ waqāsamahumā innī lakumā lamina l-nāṣiḥīn and he swore to them, ‘I am giving you sincere advice’
