Verse 7:8 in Context

4 وَكَم مِّن قَرۡیَةٍ أَهۡلَكۡنَـٰهَا فَجَاۤءَهَا بَأۡسُنَا بَیَـٰتًا أَوۡ هُمۡ قَاۤىِٕلُونَ ۝٤ wakam min qaryatin ahlaknāhā fajāahā basunā bayātan aw hum qāilūn How many towns We have destroyed! Our punishment came to them by night or while they slept in the afternoon 5 فَمَا كَانَ دَعۡوَىٰهُمۡ إِذۡ جَاۤءَهُم بَأۡسُنَاۤ إِلَّاۤ أَن قَالُوۤا۟ إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَـٰلِمِینَ ۝٥ famā kāna daʿwāhum idh jāahum basunā illā an qālū innā kunnā ẓālimīn their only cry when Our punishment came to them was, ‘How wrong we were!’ 6 فَلَنَسۡءَلَنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ أُرۡسِلَ إِلَیۡهِمۡ وَلَنَسۡءَلَنَّ ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِینَ ۝٦ falanasalanna alladhīna ur'sila ilayhim walanasalanna l-mur'salīn We shall certainly question those to whom messengers were sent–– and We shall question the messengers themselves–– 7 فَلَنَقُصَّنَّ عَلَیۡهِم بِعِلۡمࣲۖ وَمَا كُنَّا غَاۤىِٕبِینَ ۝٧ falanaquṣṣanna ʿalayhim biʿil'min wamā kunnā ghāibīn and, with full knowledge, for We were never far from them, We shall tell them what they did
8 وَٱلۡوَزۡنُ یَوۡمَىِٕذٍ ٱلۡحَقُّۚ فَمَن ثَقُلَتۡ مَوَ ٰزِینُهُۥ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡلِحُونَ ۝٨ wal-waznu yawma-idhin l-ḥaqu faman thaqulat mawāzīnuhu fa-ulāika humu l-muf'liḥūn On that Day the weighing of deeds will be true and just: those whose good deeds are heavy on the scales will be the ones to prosper
9 وَمَنۡ خَفَّتۡ مَوَ ٰزِینُهُۥ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ ٱلَّذِینَ خَسِرُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَهُم بِمَا كَانُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا یَظۡلِمُونَ ۝٩ waman khaffat mawāzīnuhu fa-ulāika alladhīna khasirū anfusahum bimā kānū biāyātinā yaẓlimūn and those whose good deeds are light will be the ones who have lost their souls through their wrongful rejection of Our messages 10 وَلَقَدۡ مَكَّنَّـٰكُمۡ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَجَعَلۡنَا لَكُمۡ فِیهَا مَعَـٰیِشَۗ قَلِیلࣰا مَّا تَشۡكُرُونَ ۝١٠ walaqad makkannākum fī l-arḍi wajaʿalnā lakum fīhā maʿāyisha qalīlan mā tashkurūn We established you [people] on the earth and provided you with a means of livelihood there––small thanks you give 11 وَلَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَـٰكُمۡ ثُمَّ صَوَّرۡنَـٰكُمۡ ثُمَّ قُلۡنَا لِلۡمَلَـٰۤىِٕكَةِ ٱسۡجُدُوا۟ لِءَادَمَ فَسَجَدُوۤا۟ إِلَّاۤ إِبۡلِیسَ لَمۡ یَكُن مِّنَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِینَ ۝١١ walaqad khalaqnākum thumma ṣawwarnākum thumma qul'nā lil'malāikati us'judū liādama fasajadū illā ib'līsa lam yakun mina l-sājidīn We created you, We gave you shape, and then We said to the angels, ‘Bow down before Adam,’ and they did. But not Iblis: he was not one of those who bowed down 12 قَالَ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَلَّا تَسۡجُدَ إِذۡ أَمَرۡتُكَۖ قَالَ أَنَا۠ خَیۡرࣱ مِّنۡهُ خَلَقۡتَنِی مِن نَّارࣲ وَخَلَقۡتَهُۥ مِن طِینࣲ ۝١٢ qāla mā manaʿaka allā tasjuda idh amartuka qāla anā khayrun min'hu khalaqtanī min nārin wakhalaqtahu min ṭīni God said, ‘What prevented you from bowing down as I commanded you?’ and he said, ‘I am better than him: You created me from fire and him from clay.’
