120 مَا كَانَ لِأَهۡلِ ٱلۡمَدِینَةِ وَمَنۡ حَوۡلَهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡأَعۡرَابِ أَن یَتَخَلَّفُوا۟ عَن رَّسُولِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا یَرۡغَبُوا۟ بِأَنفُسِهِمۡ عَن نَّفۡسِهِۦۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ لَا یُصِیبُهُمۡ ظَمَأࣱ وَلَا نَصَبࣱ وَلَا مَخۡمَصَةࣱ فِی سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا یَطَءُونَ مَوۡطِئࣰا یَغِیظُ ٱلۡكُفَّارَ وَلَا یَنَالُونَ مِنۡ عَدُوࣲّ نَّیۡلًا إِلَّا كُتِبَ لَهُم بِهِۦ عَمَلࣱ صَـٰلِحٌۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یُضِیعُ أَجۡرَ ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝١٢٠ mā kāna li-ahli l-madīnati waman ḥawlahum mina l-aʿrābi an yatakhallafū ʿan rasūli l-lahi walā yarghabū bi-anfusihim ʿan nafsihi dhālika bi-annahum lā yuṣībuhum ẓama-on walā naṣabun walā makhmaṣatun fī sabīli l-lahi walā yaṭaūna mawṭi-an yaghīẓu l-kufāra walā yanālūna min ʿaduwwin naylan illā kutiba lahum bihi ʿamalun ṣāliḥun inna l-laha lā yuḍīʿu ajra l-muḥ'sinīn The people of Medina and their neighbouring desert Arabs should not have held back from following God’s Messenger, nor should they have cared about themselves more than him: if ever they suffer any thirst, weariness, or hunger in God’s cause, take any step that angers the disbelievers, or cause any harm to an enemy, a good deed is recorded in their favour on account of it- God never wastes the reward of those who do good 121 وَلَا یُنفِقُونَ نَفَقَةࣰ صَغِیرَةࣰ وَلَا كَبِیرَةࣰ وَلَا یَقۡطَعُونَ وَادِیًا إِلَّا كُتِبَ لَهُمۡ لِیَجۡزِیَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ أَحۡسَنَ مَا كَانُوا۟ یَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٢١ walā yunfiqūna nafaqatan ṣaghīratan walā kabīratan walā yaqṭaʿūna wādiyan illā kutiba lahum liyajziyahumu l-lahu aḥsana mā kānū yaʿmalūn if they spend a little or a lot for God’s cause, if they traverse a mountain pass, all this is recorded to their credit so that God can reward them in accordance with the best of their deeds 122 ۞ وَمَا كَانَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ لِیَنفِرُوا۟ كَاۤفَّةࣰۚ فَلَوۡلَا نَفَرَ مِن كُلِّ فِرۡقَةࣲ مِّنۡهُمۡ طَاۤىِٕفَةࣱ لِّیَتَفَقَّهُوا۟ فِی ٱلدِّینِ وَلِیُنذِرُوا۟ قَوۡمَهُمۡ إِذَا رَجَعُوۤا۟ إِلَیۡهِمۡ لَعَلَّهُمۡ یَحۡذَرُونَ ۝١٢٢ wamā kāna l-mu'minūna liyanfirū kāffatan falawlā nafara min kulli fir'qatin min'hum ṭāifatun liyatafaqqahū fī l-dīni waliyundhirū qawmahum idhā rajaʿū ilayhim laʿallahum yaḥdharūn Yet it is not right for all the believers to go out [to battle] together: out of each community, a group should go out to gain understanding of the religion, so that they can teach their people when they return and so that they can guard themselves against evil 123 یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ قَـٰتِلُوا۟ ٱلَّذِینَ یَلُونَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡكُفَّارِ وَلۡیَجِدُوا۟ فِیكُمۡ غِلۡظَةࣰۚ وَٱعۡلَمُوۤا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ ٱلۡمُتَّقِینَ ۝١٢٣ yāayyuhā alladhīna āmanū qātilū alladhīna yalūnakum mina l-kufāri walyajidū fīkum ghil'ẓatan wa-iʿ'lamū anna l-laha maʿa l-mutaqīn You who believe, fight the disbelievers near you and let them find you standing firm: be aware that God is with those who are mindful of Him
124 وَإِذَا مَاۤ أُنزِلَتۡ سُورَةࣱ فَمِنۡهُم مَّن یَقُولُ أَیُّكُمۡ زَادَتۡهُ هَـٰذِهِۦۤ إِیمَـٰنࣰاۚ فَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ فَزَادَتۡهُمۡ إِیمَـٰنࣰا وَهُمۡ یَسۡتَبۡشِرُونَ ۝١٢٤ wa-idhā mā unzilat sūratun famin'hum man yaqūlu ayyukum zādathu hādhihi īmānan fa-ammā alladhīna āmanū fazādathum īmānan wahum yastabshirūn When a sura is revealed, some [hypocrites] say, ‘Have any of you been strengthened in faith by it?’ It certainly does strengthen the faith of those who believe and they rejoice
125 وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِینَ فِی قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضࣱ فَزَادَتۡهُمۡ رِجۡسًا إِلَىٰ رِجۡسِهِمۡ وَمَاتُوا۟ وَهُمۡ كَـٰفِرُونَ ۝١٢٥ wa-ammā alladhīna fī qulūbihim maraḍun fazādathum rij'san ilā rij'sihim wamātū wahum kāfirūn but, as for the perverse at heart, each new sura adds further to their perversity. They die disbelieving 126 أَوَ لَا یَرَوۡنَ أَنَّهُمۡ یُفۡتَنُونَ فِی كُلِّ عَامࣲ مَّرَّةً أَوۡ مَرَّتَیۡنِ ثُمَّ لَا یَتُوبُونَ وَلَا هُمۡ یَذَّكَّرُونَ ۝١٢٦ awalā yarawna annahum yuf'tanūna fī kulli ʿāmin marratan aw marratayni thumma lā yatūbūna walā hum yadhakkarūn Can they not see that they are afflicted once or twice a year? Yet they neither repent nor take heed 127 وَإِذَا مَاۤ أُنزِلَتۡ سُورَةࣱ نَّظَرَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ إِلَىٰ بَعۡضٍ هَلۡ یَرَىٰكُم مِّنۡ أَحَدࣲ ثُمَّ ٱنصَرَفُوا۟ۚ صَرَفَ ٱللَّهُ قُلُوبَهُم بِأَنَّهُمۡ قَوۡمࣱ لَّا یَفۡقَهُونَ ۝١٢٧ wa-idhā mā unzilat sūratun naẓara baʿḍuhum ilā baʿḍin hal yarākum min aḥadin thumma inṣarafū ṣarafa l-lahu qulūbahum bi-annahum qawmun lā yafqahūn Whenever a sura is revealed, they look at each other and say, ‘Is anyone watching you?’ and then they turn away- God has turned their hearts away because they are people who do not use their reason 128 لَقَدۡ جَاۤءَكُمۡ رَسُولࣱ مِّنۡ أَنفُسِكُمۡ عَزِیزٌ عَلَیۡهِ مَا عَنِتُّمۡ حَرِیصٌ عَلَیۡكُم بِٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ رَءُوفࣱ رَّحِیمࣱ ۝١٢٨ laqad jāakum rasūlun min anfusikum ʿazīzun ʿalayhi mā ʿanittum ḥarīṣun ʿalaykum bil-mu'minīna raūfun raḥīmu A Messenger has come to you from among yourselves. Your suffering distresses him: he is deeply concerned for you and full of kindness and mercy towards the believers
