1 A Great Prophecy

۞ الۤمۤ ۝١

Alif. La’am. Mi’em!

غُلِبَتِ ٱلرُّومُ ۝٢

The Romans have been defeated

ghulibati l-rūm

فِیۤ أَدۡنَى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَهُم مِّنۢ بَعۡدِ غَلَبِهِمۡ سَیَغۡلِبُونَ ۝٣

In a near land, and they, after their defeat, will become victorious

fī adnā l-arḍi wahum min baʿdi ghalabihim sayaghlibūn

فِی بِضۡعِ سِنِینَۗ لِلَّهِ ٱلۡأَمۡرُ مِن قَبۡلُ وَمِنۢ بَعۡدُۚ وَیَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ یَفۡرَحُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٤

In the coming few years. Unto Allâh, belongs the command before and after. On that day the monotheistic believers will rejoice

fī biḍ'ʿi sinīna lillahi l-amru min qablu wamin baʿdu wayawma-idhin yafraḥu l-mu'minūn

بِنَصۡرِ ٱللَّهِۚ یَنصُرُ مَن یَشَاۤءُۖ وَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلرَّحِیمُ ۝٥

In the triumph which Allâh will give them. He gives victory to whom He wills. He is the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

binaṣri l-lahi yanṣuru man yashāu wahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-raḥīm

وَعۡدَ ٱللَّهِۖ لَا یُخۡلِفُ ٱللَّهُ وَعۡدَهُۥ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٦

It is a Promise of Allâh. It is impossible for Allâh to break His promise, but most people do lack the knowledge.

waʿda l-lahi lā yukh'lifu l-lahu waʿdahu walākinna akthara l-nāsi lā yaʿlamūn

یَعۡلَمُونَ ظَـٰهِرࣰا مِّنَ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ هُمۡ غَـٰفِلُونَ ۝٧

They know (only) what is conspicuous of this ‘worldly life’; and they are inattentive to the ‘Hereafter’.

yaʿlamūna ẓāhiran mina l-ḥayati l-dun'yā wahum ʿani l-ākhirati hum ghāfilūn

أَوَ لَمۡ یَتَفَكَّرُوا۟ فِیۤ أَنفُسِهِمۗ مَّا خَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَمَا بَیۡنَهُمَاۤ إِلَّا بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَأَجَلࣲ مُّسَمࣰّىۗ وَإِنَّ كَثِیرࣰا مِّنَ ٱلنَّاسِ بِلِقَاۤىِٕ رَبِّهِمۡ لَكَـٰفِرُونَ ۝٨

Why do they not think carefully about their own selves? Allâh created not the heavens and earth, and that which is between them, except for a certain reason and for an appointed term. Verily most of the people, in (the matter of) meeting with their Lord, are inclined to disbelieve.

awalam yatafakkarū fī anfusihim mā khalaqa l-lahu l-samāwāti wal-arḍa wamā baynahumā illā bil-ḥaqi wa-ajalin musamman wa-inna kathīran mina l-nāsi biliqāi rabbihim lakāfirūn

أَوَ لَمۡ یَسِیرُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَیَنظُرُوا۟ كَیۡفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡۚ كَانُوۤا۟ أَشَدَّ مِنۡهُمۡ قُوَّةࣰ وَأَثَارُوا۟ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَعَمَرُوهَاۤ أَكۡثَرَ مِمَّا عَمَرُوهَا وَجَاۤءَتۡهُمۡ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِۖ فَمَا كَانَ ٱللَّهُ لِیَظۡلِمَهُمۡ وَلَـٰكِن كَانُوۤا۟ أَنفُسَهُمۡ یَظۡلِمُونَ ۝٩

Have they not travelled through the land and seen what was the dreadful outcome of those who were before them? They were more powerful than them. They tilled the land and built on it more than what they, (-the Quraysh Tribe of Mecca), have built on it. Their ‘Messengers’ came to them with the knowledge of truth. (But they gave no credence to their ‘Message', which led into their own destruction). It was not Allâh Who wronged them, but they are the ones who used to wrong themselves.

awalam yasīrū fī l-arḍi fayanẓurū kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu alladhīna min qablihim kānū ashadda min'hum quwwatan wa-athārū l-arḍa waʿamarūhā akthara mimmā ʿamarūhā wajāathum rusuluhum bil-bayināti famā kāna l-lahu liyaẓlimahum walākin kānū anfusahum yaẓlimūn

ثُمَّ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةَ ٱلَّذِینَ أَسَـٰۤءُوا۟ ٱلسُّوۤأَىٰۤ أَن كَذَّبُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ وَكَانُوا۟ بِهَا یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ۝١٠

Then dreadful was the outcome of those who did evil, because they gave no credence to Our ‘Revelations’ and used to mock at them.

thumma kāna ʿāqibata alladhīna asāū l-sūā an kadhabū biāyāti l-lahi wakānū bihā yastahziūn

2 The two Parties

ٱللَّهُ یَبۡدَؤُا۟ ٱلۡخَلۡقَ ثُمَّ یُعِیدُهُۥ ثُمَّ إِلَیۡهِ تُرۡجَعُونَ ۝١١

Allâh originates the creation, then repeats it, then you are destined to return unto Him.

al-lahu yabda-u l-khalqa thumma yuʿīduhu thumma ilayhi tur'jaʿūn

وَیَوۡمَ تَقُومُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ یُبۡلِسُ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ ۝١٢

The Day when the (Inevitable) ‘Hour’ (of Reckoning) comes to pass, the ungodly sinner will remain in a state of despair.

wayawma taqūmu l-sāʿatu yub'lisu l-muj'rimūn

وَلَمۡ یَكُن لَّهُم مِّن شُرَكَاۤىِٕهِمۡ شُفَعَـٰۤؤُا۟ وَكَانُوا۟ بِشُرَكَاۤىِٕهِمۡ كَـٰفِرِینَ ۝١٣

They will have no intercessors from among those whom they associate with Allâh. Consequently they shall disavow those whom they associate with Allâh.

walam yakun lahum min shurakāihim shufaʿāu wakānū bishurakāihim kāfirīn

وَیَوۡمَ تَقُومُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ یَتَفَرَّقُونَ ۝١٤

The Day when the (Inevitable) ‘Hour’ (of Reckoning) comes to pass is the day when they will be separated.

wayawma taqūmu l-sāʿatu yawma-idhin yatafarraqūn

فَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ فَهُمۡ فِی رَوۡضَةࣲ یُحۡبَرُونَ ۝١٥

Then as for those who adhere firmly to Islamic monotheism and do righteous acts will be delighted in a ‘garden of bliss’.

fa-ammā alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti fahum fī rawḍatin yuḥ'barūn

وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَكَذَّبُوا۟ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا وَلِقَاۤىِٕ ٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ فِی ٱلۡعَذَابِ مُحۡضَرُونَ ۝١٦

On the other hand, those who excessively indulge in disbelief (in Allâh), and deny Our ‘Verses’ and the meeting of the Hereafter, will be brought to doom.

wa-ammā alladhīna kafarū wakadhabū biāyātinā waliqāi l-ākhirati fa-ulāika fī l-ʿadhābi muḥ'ḍarūn

فَسُبۡحَـٰنَ ٱللَّهِ حِینَ تُمۡسُونَ وَحِینَ تُصۡبِحُونَ ۝١٧

Therefore, glorify and venerate Allâh when you enter the evening and when you enter the morning.

fasub'ḥāna l-lahi ḥīna tum'sūna waḥīna tuṣ'biḥūn

وَلَهُ ٱلۡحَمۡدُ فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَعَشِیࣰّا وَحِینَ تُظۡهِرُونَ ۝١٨

Unto Him belong All the praises (& gratitude) in the heavens and on the earth, in the evenings and when you are at noon.

walahu l-ḥamdu fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi waʿashiyyan waḥīna tuẓ'hirūn

یُخۡرِجُ ٱلۡحَیَّ مِنَ ٱلۡمَیِّتِ وَیُخۡرِجُ ٱلۡمَیِّتَ مِنَ ٱلۡحَیِّ وَیُحۡیِ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ بَعۡدَ مَوۡتِهَاۚ وَكَذَ ٰلِكَ تُخۡرَجُونَ ۝١٩

He brings forth the living from the dead and brings forth the dead from the living. He resuscitates the earth after its death. This is how you will be resurrected.

yukh'riju l-ḥaya mina l-mayiti wayukh'riju l-mayita mina l-ḥayi wayuḥ'yī l-arḍa baʿda mawtihā wakadhālika tukh'rajūn

3 Manifestation of Divine Power in Nature

وَمِنۡ ءَایَـٰتِهِۦۤ أَنۡ خَلَقَكُم مِّن تُرَابࣲ ثُمَّ إِذَاۤ أَنتُم بَشَرࣱ تَنتَشِرُونَ ۝٢٠

(One) of His Signs is this, that He created you from dust, then you became human beings, all scattered abroad.

wamin āyātihi an khalaqakum min turābin thumma idhā antum basharun tantashirūn

وَمِنۡ ءَایَـٰتِهِۦۤ أَنۡ خَلَقَ لَكُم مِّنۡ أَنفُسِكُمۡ أَزۡوَ ٰجࣰا لِّتَسۡكُنُوۤا۟ إِلَیۡهَا وَجَعَلَ بَیۡنَكُم مَّوَدَّةࣰ وَرَحۡمَةًۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَتَفَكَّرُونَ ۝٢١

(One) of His Signs is this, that He created for you spouses from among yourselves, so as to have tranquility in them, and that He put between you intimacy and compassion. In that, definitely, are signs for people who ruminate (on the supremacy of Allâh).

wamin āyātihi an khalaqa lakum min anfusikum azwājan litaskunū ilayhā wajaʿala baynakum mawaddatan waraḥmatan inna fī dhālika laāyātin liqawmin yatafakkarūn

وَمِنۡ ءَایَـٰتِهِۦ خَلۡقُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَٱخۡتِلَـٰفُ أَلۡسِنَتِكُمۡ وَأَلۡوَ ٰنِكُمۡۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّلۡعَـٰلِمِینَ ۝٢٢

(One) of His sings is the creation of the heavens and earth, and the diversity of your tongues and colors. Absolutely, in that are signs for the people who have spiritual gift of knowledge.

wamin āyātihi khalqu l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wa-ikh'tilāfu alsinatikum wa-alwānikum inna fī dhālika laāyātin lil'ʿālimīn

وَمِنۡ ءَایَـٰتِهِۦ مَنَامُكُم بِٱلَّیۡلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ وَٱبۡتِغَاۤؤُكُم مِّن فَضۡلِهِۦۤۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَسۡمَعُونَ ۝٢٣

(One) of His sings is that you sleep at night and at daylight, and you strive to obtain of His Bounty. Absolutely, in that are signs for people who hearken.

wamin āyātihi manāmukum bi-al-layli wal-nahāri wa-ib'tighāukum min faḍlihi inna fī dhālika laāyātin liqawmin yasmaʿūn

وَمِنۡ ءَایَـٰتِهِۦ یُرِیكُمُ ٱلۡبَرۡقَ خَوۡفࣰا وَطَمَعࣰا وَیُنَزِّلُ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مَاۤءࣰ فَیُحۡیِۦ بِهِ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ بَعۡدَ مَوۡتِهَاۤۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٢٤

(One) of His signs is this, that He shows you the lightning for fear and hope, and sends down water from the cloud, then resuscitates therewith the earth after its death. Absolutely, in that are signs for a people who are capable of perceiving the intended meaning of (His Signs).

wamin āyātihi yurīkumu l-barqa khawfan waṭamaʿan wayunazzilu mina l-samāi māan fayuḥ'yī bihi l-arḍa baʿda mawtihā inna fī dhālika laāyātin liqawmin yaʿqilūn

وَمِنۡ ءَایَـٰتِهِۦۤ أَن تَقُومَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءُ وَٱلۡأَرۡضُ بِأَمۡرِهِۦۚ ثُمَّ إِذَا دَعَاكُمۡ دَعۡوَةࣰ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَرۡضِ إِذَاۤ أَنتُمۡ تَخۡرُجُونَ ۝٢٥

(One) of His signs is this that the heavens and earth will stand fast by His Command, then when He calls you with a (single) call to come forth from the earth. You will immediately come forth.

wamin āyātihi an taqūma l-samāu wal-arḍu bi-amrihi thumma idhā daʿākum daʿwatan mina l-arḍi idhā antum takhrujūn

وَلَهُۥ مَن فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۖ كُلࣱّ لَّهُۥ قَـٰنِتُونَ ۝٢٦

Unto Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and on the earth. All are obedient to Him.

walahu man fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi kullun lahu qānitūn

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِی یَبۡدَؤُا۟ ٱلۡخَلۡقَ ثُمَّ یُعِیدُهُۥ وَهُوَ أَهۡوَنُ عَلَیۡهِۚ وَلَهُ ٱلۡمَثَلُ ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰ فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ وَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلۡحَكِیمُ ۝٢٧

He is the One Who originates the creation, then repeats it. This is easier for Him (to do). His is the most exalted similitude in the heavens and on the earth. He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.

wahuwa alladhī yabda-u l-khalqa thumma yuʿīduhu wahuwa ahwanu ʿalayhi walahu l-mathalu l-aʿlā fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi wahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-ḥakīm

4 Appeal to Human Nature

ضَرَبَ لَكُم مَّثَلࣰا مِّنۡ أَنفُسِكُمۡۖ هَل لَّكُم مِّن مَّا مَلَكَتۡ أَیۡمَـٰنُكُم مِّن شُرَكَاۤءَ فِی مَا رَزَقۡنَـٰكُمۡ فَأَنتُمۡ فِیهِ سَوَاۤءࣱ تَخَافُونَهُمۡ كَخِیفَتِكُمۡ أَنفُسَكُمۡۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ نُفَصِّلُ ٱلۡءَایَـٰتِ لِقَوۡمࣲ یَعۡقِلُونَ ۝٢٨

He sets forth to you a similitude of yourselves. Do you have among those whom your right hands possess partners in that which We have bestowed on you, so that you are equal therein, you fear them as you fear each other? This is how We distinctly explain the ‘Revelations’ for a people who are capable of perceiving (the intended meaning of the signs of Allâh).

ḍaraba lakum mathalan min anfusikum hal lakum min mā malakat aymānukum min shurakāa fī mā razaqnākum fa-antum fīhi sawāon takhāfūnahum kakhīfatikum anfusakum kadhālika nufaṣṣilu l-āyāti liqawmin yaʿqilūn

بَلِ ٱتَّبَعَ ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوۤا۟ أَهۡوَاۤءَهُم بِغَیۡرِ عِلۡمࣲۖ فَمَن یَهۡدِی مَنۡ أَضَلَّ ٱللَّهُۖ وَمَا لَهُم مِّن نَّـٰصِرِینَ ۝٢٩

Nay, those who are grossly unfair have taken in their self-deceived beliefs for the epistemic without having a reason. Then who can give spiritual insight to the one whom Allâh has made sure he is fooled into believing a lie? For such there will be no helpers.

bali ittabaʿa alladhīna ẓalamū ahwāahum bighayri ʿil'min faman yahdī man aḍalla l-lahu wamā lahum min nāṣirīn

فَأَقِمۡ وَجۡهَكَ لِلدِّینِ حَنِیفࣰاۚ فِطۡرَتَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّتِی فَطَرَ ٱلنَّاسَ عَلَیۡهَاۚ لَا تَبۡدِیلَ لِخَلۡقِ ٱللَّهِۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ ٱلدِّینُ ٱلۡقَیِّمُ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٣٠

Thus, set your face steadily and truly towards the system of faith and worship as a monotheist, (since it is consistent with) the true nature which Allâh has created in the people. The creation of Allâh cannot be altered. This is the upright faith, but most of the people do lack knowledge (of the truth).

fa-aqim wajhaka lilddīni ḥanīfan fiṭ'rata l-lahi allatī faṭara l-nāsa ʿalayhā lā tabdīla likhalqi l-lahi dhālika l-dīnu l-qayimu walākinna akthara l-nāsi lā yaʿlamūn

۞ مُنِیبِینَ إِلَیۡهِ وَٱتَّقُوهُ وَأَقِیمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَلَا تَكُونُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِینَ ۝٣١

Turn in repentance unto Him, observe all that He has commanded you, establish the regular Prayer, and be not of the Polytheists,

munībīna ilayhi wa-ittaqūhu wa-aqīmū l-ṣalata walā takūnū mina l-mush'rikīn

مِنَ ٱلَّذِینَ فَرَّقُوا۟ دِینَهُمۡ وَكَانُوا۟ شِیَعࣰاۖ كُلُّ حِزۡبِۭ بِمَا لَدَیۡهِمۡ فَرِحُونَ ۝٣٢

(Or) of those who split up their religion and become sects, every party rejoicing over what it has.

mina alladhīna farraqū dīnahum wakānū shiyaʿan kullu ḥiz'bin bimā ladayhim fariḥūn

وَإِذَا مَسَّ ٱلنَّاسَ ضُرࣱّ دَعَوۡا۟ رَبَّهُم مُّنِیبِینَ إِلَیۡهِ ثُمَّ إِذَاۤ أَذَاقَهُم مِّنۡهُ رَحۡمَةً إِذَا فَرِیقࣱ مِّنۡهُم بِرَبِّهِمۡ یُشۡرِكُونَ ۝٣٣

When adversity touches the people, they implore their Lord, turning in repentance unto Him. Then when He gives them a taste of His mercy, at once some of them begin to attribute partners to their Lord,

wa-idhā massa l-nāsa ḍurrun daʿaw rabbahum munībīna ilayhi thumma idhā adhāqahum min'hu raḥmatan idhā farīqun min'hum birabbihim yush'rikūn

لِیَكۡفُرُوا۟ بِمَاۤ ءَاتَیۡنَـٰهُمۡۚ فَتَمَتَّعُوا۟ فَسَوۡفَ تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٣٤

In order to disbelieve in that which We have granted them. Thus, enjoy yourselves for a while, but you will come to know (the consequences of your heresy).

liyakfurū bimā ātaynāhum fatamattaʿū fasawfa taʿlamūn

أَمۡ أَنزَلۡنَا عَلَیۡهِمۡ سُلۡطَـٰنࣰا فَهُوَ یَتَكَلَّمُ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یُشۡرِكُونَ ۝٣٥

Or have We sent down authority to them, which speaks of that which they associate with Him?

am anzalnā ʿalayhim sul'ṭānan fahuwa yatakallamu bimā kānū bihi yush'rikūn

وَإِذَاۤ أَذَقۡنَا ٱلنَّاسَ رَحۡمَةࣰ فَرِحُوا۟ بِهَاۖ وَإِن تُصِبۡهُمۡ سَیِّئَةُۢ بِمَا قَدَّمَتۡ أَیۡدِیهِمۡ إِذَا هُمۡ یَقۡنَطُونَ ۝٣٦

When We let the people taste mercy, they rejoice over it. But if an evil thing befell them because of what their hands have sent forth, they would fall into despair.

wa-idhā adhaqnā l-nāsa raḥmatan fariḥū bihā wa-in tuṣib'hum sayyi-atun bimā qaddamat aydīhim idhā hum yaqnaṭūn

أَوَ لَمۡ یَرَوۡا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ یَبۡسُطُ ٱلرِّزۡقَ لِمَن یَشَاۤءُ وَیَقۡدِرُۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّقَوۡمࣲ یُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٣٧

Do they not see that Allâh spreads out sustenance to whom He wills and straitens it? Unquestionably, there are signs in this for people who are inclined to believe in Allâh.

awalam yaraw anna l-laha yabsuṭu l-riz'qa liman yashāu wayaqdiru inna fī dhālika laāyātin liqawmin yu'minūn

فَءَاتِ ذَا ٱلۡقُرۡبَىٰ حَقَّهُۥ وَٱلۡمِسۡكِینَ وَٱبۡنَ ٱلسَّبِیلِۚ ذَ ٰلِكَ خَیۡرࣱ لِّلَّذِینَ یُرِیدُونَ وَجۡهَ ٱللَّهِۖ وَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡلِحُونَ ۝٣٨

Therefore, give to the near of kin his right, as well as to the needy and the hopeless wayfarer. That is best for those who seek the Countenance of Allâh. Those are the ones who will ultimately achieve a blissful life/or gain eternal salvation.

faāti dhā l-qur'bā ḥaqqahu wal-mis'kīna wa-ib'na l-sabīli dhālika khayrun lilladhīna yurīdūna wajha l-lahi wa-ulāika humu l-muf'liḥūn

وَمَاۤ ءَاتَیۡتُم مِّن رِّبࣰا لِّیَرۡبُوَا۟ فِیۤ أَمۡوَ ٰلِ ٱلنَّاسِ فَلَا یَرۡبُوا۟ عِندَ ٱللَّهِۖ وَمَاۤ ءَاتَیۡتُم مِّن زَكَوٰةࣲ تُرِیدُونَ وَجۡهَ ٱللَّهِ فَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُضۡعِفُونَ ۝٣٩

That which you give in usury so as to increase within the wealth of people will not increase with Allâh. But what you give in alms, seeking the countenance of Allâh, (will increase). Those are the ones who will get a recompense multiplied.

wamā ātaytum min riban liyarbuwā fī amwāli l-nāsi falā yarbū ʿinda l-lahi wamā ātaytum min zakatin turīdūna wajha l-lahi fa-ulāika humu l-muḍ'ʿifūn

ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَكُمۡ ثُمَّ رَزَقَكُمۡ ثُمَّ یُمِیتُكُمۡ ثُمَّ یُحۡیِیكُمۡۖ هَلۡ مِن شُرَكَاۤىِٕكُم مَّن یَفۡعَلُ مِن ذَ ٰلِكُم مِّن شَیۡءࣲۚ سُبۡحَـٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَـٰلَىٰ عَمَّا یُشۡرِكُونَ ۝٤٠

Allâh is the (only) One Who created you, then gave you sustenance; then He causes you to die, then gives life to you again. Is there anyone of your (so-called) partners (of Allâh) that can do any of these things? Exalted is He and high above of what they associate with Him.

al-lahu alladhī khalaqakum thumma razaqakum thumma yumītukum thumma yuḥ'yīkum hal min shurakāikum man yafʿalu min dhālikum min shayin sub'ḥānahu wataʿālā ʿammā yush'rikūn

5 A Transformation

ظَهَرَ ٱلۡفَسَادُ فِی ٱلۡبَرِّ وَٱلۡبَحۡرِ بِمَا كَسَبَتۡ أَیۡدِی ٱلنَّاسِ لِیُذِیقَهُم بَعۡضَ ٱلَّذِی عَمِلُوا۟ لَعَلَّهُمۡ یَرۡجِعُونَ ۝٤١

Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea due to what the hands of people have earned, so that He may make them taste part of what they have done, and may give them a chance to quit their perversion.

ẓahara l-fasādu fī l-bari wal-baḥri bimā kasabat aydī l-nāsi liyudhīqahum baʿḍa alladhī ʿamilū laʿallahum yarjiʿūn

قُلۡ سِیرُوا۟ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ فَٱنظُرُوا۟ كَیۡفَ كَانَ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلَّذِینَ مِن قَبۡلُۚ كَانَ أَكۡثَرُهُم مُّشۡرِكِینَ ۝٤٢

Say, (O’ Muhammad), "Travel in the land, then see how dreadful was the end of those before you. Most of them were Polytheists.”

qul sīrū fī l-arḍi fa-unẓurū kayfa kāna ʿāqibatu alladhīna min qablu kāna aktharuhum mush'rikīn

فَأَقِمۡ وَجۡهَكَ لِلدِّینِ ٱلۡقَیِّمِ مِن قَبۡلِ أَن یَأۡتِیَ یَوۡمࣱ لَّا مَرَدَّ لَهُۥ مِنَ ٱللَّهِۖ یَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ یَصَّدَّعُونَ ۝٤٣

Thus, set your face steadily and truly towards the upright faith (as a monotheist) before there comes to you from Allâh a day which cannot be averted. On that day, they will be divided.

fa-aqim wajhaka lilddīni l-qayimi min qabli an yatiya yawmun lā maradda lahu mina l-lahi yawma-idhin yaṣṣaddaʿūn

مَن كَفَرَ فَعَلَیۡهِ كُفۡرُهُۥۖ وَمَنۡ عَمِلَ صَـٰلِحࣰا فَلِأَنفُسِهِمۡ یَمۡهَدُونَ ۝٤٤

Whoever falls into disbelief in Allâh must bear the consequences of his disbelief, while those who do righteous (acts) pave the way (to Al- Jannah) for themselves.

man kafara faʿalayhi kuf'ruhu waman ʿamila ṣāliḥan fali-anfusihim yamhadūn

لِیَجۡزِیَ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ مِن فَضۡلِهِۦۤۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَا یُحِبُّ ٱلۡكَـٰفِرِینَ ۝٤٥

He will remunerate out of His bounty to those who adhere firmly to Islamic monotheism and do righteous acts. Verily, He demonstrates not his own love for those who lack faith (in Him).

liyajziya alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti min faḍlihi innahu lā yuḥibbu l-kāfirīn

وَمِنۡ ءَایَـٰتِهِۦۤ أَن یُرۡسِلَ ٱلرِّیَاحَ مُبَشِّرَ ٰتࣲ وَلِیُذِیقَكُم مِّن رَّحۡمَتِهِۦ وَلِتَجۡرِیَ ٱلۡفُلۡكُ بِأَمۡرِهِۦ وَلِتَبۡتَغُوا۟ مِن فَضۡلِهِۦ وَلَعَلَّكُمۡ تَشۡكُرُونَ ۝٤٦

(One) of His signs is this, that He sends forth the winds as joyful news, making you taste His mercy, allowing the ship to run by His command, so that you may strive to obtain of His bounty, and you may show your gratitude (to Him).

wamin āyātihi an yur'sila l-riyāḥa mubashirātin waliyudhīqakum min raḥmatihi walitajriya l-ful'ku bi-amrihi walitabtaghū min faḍlihi walaʿallakum tashkurūn

وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِكَ رُسُلًا إِلَىٰ قَوۡمِهِمۡ فَجَاۤءُوهُم بِٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِ فَٱنتَقَمۡنَا مِنَ ٱلَّذِینَ أَجۡرَمُوا۟ۖ وَكَانَ حَقًّا عَلَیۡنَا نَصۡرُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ۝٤٧

Indeed, We sent before you ‘Messengers’ to their people. They came to them with the knowledge of truth. We inflicted Our divine retribution upon those who deliberately kept on singing. It is incumbent on Us to grant victory to the the monotheistic believers.

walaqad arsalnā min qablika rusulan ilā qawmihim fajāūhum bil-bayināti fa-intaqamnā mina alladhīna ajramū wakāna ḥaqqan ʿalaynā naṣru l-mu'minīn

ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِی یُرۡسِلُ ٱلرِّیَـٰحَ فَتُثِیرُ سَحَابࣰا فَیَبۡسُطُهُۥ فِی ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ كَیۡفَ یَشَاۤءُ وَیَجۡعَلُهُۥ كِسَفࣰا فَتَرَى ٱلۡوَدۡقَ یَخۡرُجُ مِنۡ خِلَـٰلِهِۦۖ فَإِذَاۤ أَصَابَ بِهِۦ مَن یَشَاۤءُ مِنۡ عِبَادِهِۦۤ إِذَا هُمۡ یَسۡتَبۡشِرُونَ ۝٤٨

Allâh is the One Who sends forth the winds so that they raise clouds, then He spreads them along the sky as He wills, and then cause them to break into fragments, and so you behold the rain coming forth from within them. Then when He causes it to fall on whom of His servants as He wills, they regard it as auspicious.

al-lahu alladhī yur'silu l-riyāḥa fatuthīru saḥāban fayabsuṭuhu fī l-samāi kayfa yashāu wayajʿaluhu kisafan fatarā l-wadqa yakhruju min khilālihi fa-idhā aṣāba bihi man yashāu min ʿibādihi idhā hum yastabshirūn

وَإِن كَانُوا۟ مِن قَبۡلِ أَن یُنَزَّلَ عَلَیۡهِم مِّن قَبۡلِهِۦ لَمُبۡلِسِینَ ۝٤٩

Nevertheless, they were before this, just before it was sent down upon them, they were in a state of despair.

wa-in kānū min qabli an yunazzala ʿalayhim min qablihi lamub'lisīn

فَٱنظُرۡ إِلَىٰۤ ءَاثَـٰرِ رَحۡمَتِ ٱللَّهِ كَیۡفَ یُحۡیِ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ بَعۡدَ مَوۡتِهَاۤۚ إِنَّ ذَ ٰلِكَ لَمُحۡیِ ٱلۡمَوۡتَىٰۖ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ قَدِیرࣱ ۝٥٠

Look then at the (positive) effects of the mercy of Allâh, how He resuscitates the earth after its death. Indeed, He is the one who gives life to the dead; and He is the one who is capable of doing whatever He wills.

fa-unẓur ilā āthāri raḥmati l-lahi kayfa yuḥ'yī l-arḍa baʿda mawtihā inna dhālika lamuḥ'yī l-mawtā wahuwa ʿalā kulli shayin qadīru

وَلَىِٕنۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا رِیحࣰا فَرَأَوۡهُ مُصۡفَرࣰّا لَّظَلُّوا۟ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِۦ یَكۡفُرُونَ ۝٥١

If it should happen that We sent a wind and they saw it yellow, they would after that obviously continue to fall into disbelief in Allâh.

wala-in arsalnā rīḥan fara-awhu muṣ'farran laẓallū min baʿdihi yakfurūn

فَإِنَّكَ لَا تُسۡمِعُ ٱلۡمَوۡتَىٰ وَلَا تُسۡمِعُ ٱلصُّمَّ ٱلدُّعَاۤءَ إِذَا وَلَّوۡا۟ مُدۡبِرِینَ ۝٥٢

Therefore, you can’t make the dead hear, nor can you make the deaf hear the call, when they go back retreating,

fa-innaka lā tus'miʿu l-mawtā walā tus'miʿu l-ṣuma l-duʿāa idhā wallaw mud'birīn

وَمَاۤ أَنتَ بِهَـٰدِ ٱلۡعُمۡیِ عَن ضَلَـٰلَتِهِمۡۖ إِن تُسۡمِعُ إِلَّا مَن یُؤۡمِنُ بِءَایَـٰتِنَا فَهُم مُّسۡلِمُونَ ۝٥٣

Nor can you guide the (spiritual) blind out of their error. You can’t make none hear except those who (firmly) believe in Our ‘Revelation’ and delight in submitting (themselves entirely to the authority of Allâh).

wamā anta bihādi l-ʿum'yi ʿan ḍalālatihim in tus'miʿu illā man yu'minu biāyātinā fahum mus'limūn

6 Overthrow of Opposition

۞ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِی خَلَقَكُم مِّن ضَعۡفࣲ ثُمَّ جَعَلَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ ضَعۡفࣲ قُوَّةࣰ ثُمَّ جَعَلَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ قُوَّةࣲ ضَعۡفࣰا وَشَیۡبَةࣰۚ یَخۡلُقُ مَا یَشَاۤءُۚ وَهُوَ ٱلۡعَلِیمُ ٱلۡقَدِیرُ ۝٥٤

Allâh is the (only) One Who created you from a state of weakness, then gave you strength after weakness, then gave you weakness and gray hair after strength. He creates whatever He wills, and He is the All-Knowing, the All-Powerful.

al-lahu alladhī khalaqakum min ḍaʿfin thumma jaʿala min baʿdi ḍaʿfin quwwatan thumma jaʿala min baʿdi quwwatin ḍaʿfan washaybatan yakhluqu mā yashāu wahuwa l-ʿalīmu l-qadīr

وَیَوۡمَ تَقُومُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ یُقۡسِمُ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُونَ مَا لَبِثُوا۟ غَیۡرَ سَاعَةࣲۚ كَذَ ٰلِكَ كَانُوا۟ یُؤۡفَكُونَ ۝٥٥

On the day when the (Inevitable) ‘Hour’ (of Reckoning) comes to pass, the ungodly sinners will swear that they had not stayed more than an hour. This is how they were deceived into going away from the established course.

wayawma taqūmu l-sāʿatu yuq'simu l-muj'rimūna mā labithū ghayra sāʿatin kadhālika kānū yu'fakūn

وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِینَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلۡعِلۡمَ وَٱلۡإِیمَـٰنَ لَقَدۡ لَبِثۡتُمۡ فِی كِتَـٰبِ ٱللَّهِ إِلَىٰ یَوۡمِ ٱلۡبَعۡثِۖ فَهَـٰذَا یَوۡمُ ٱلۡبَعۡثِ وَلَـٰكِنَّكُمۡ كُنتُمۡ لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٥٦

Those who have spiritual gift of knowledge and Faith will say: "Indeed you have stayed according to the ordinance of Allâh until the ‘Day of Resurrection’. Thus, this is the ‘Day of Resurrection’, but you were not to aware.

waqāla alladhīna ūtū l-ʿil'ma wal-īmāna laqad labith'tum fī kitābi l-lahi ilā yawmi l-baʿthi fahādhā yawmu l-baʿthi walākinnakum kuntum lā taʿlamūn

فَیَوۡمَىِٕذࣲ لَّا یَنفَعُ ٱلَّذِینَ ظَلَمُوا۟ مَعۡذِرَتُهُمۡ وَلَا هُمۡ یُسۡتَعۡتَبُونَ ۝٥٧

So, on that ‘Day’, the excuses of those who were grossly unfair and morally wrong will not benefit them, neither will they be allowed to make amends.

fayawma-idhin lā yanfaʿu alladhīna ẓalamū maʿdhiratuhum walā hum yus'taʿtabūn

وَلَقَدۡ ضَرَبۡنَا لِلنَّاسِ فِی هَـٰذَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانِ مِن كُلِّ مَثَلࣲۚ وَلَىِٕن جِئۡتَهُم بِءَایَةࣲ لَّیَقُولَنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ كَفَرُوۤا۟ إِنۡ أَنتُمۡ إِلَّا مُبۡطِلُونَ ۝٥٨

We have coined for mankind in this Qur'an every kind of parable. If it should happen that you brought to them a Verse, those who excessively indulge in disbelief (in Allâh) would definitely say: "You are but gainsayers."

walaqad ḍarabnā lilnnāsi fī hādhā l-qur'āni min kulli mathalin wala-in ji'tahum biāyatin layaqūlanna alladhīna kafarū in antum illā mub'ṭilūn

كَذَ ٰلِكَ یَطۡبَعُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِ ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٥٩

This is how Allâh sealed the hearts of those who lack knowledge (of Him).

kadhālika yaṭbaʿu l-lahu ʿalā qulūbi alladhīna lā yaʿlamūn

فَٱصۡبِرۡ إِنَّ وَعۡدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقࣱّۖ وَلَا یَسۡتَخِفَّنَّكَ ٱلَّذِینَ لَا یُوقِنُونَ ۝٦٠

Therefore, persist in patience and constancy! The promise of Allâh is absolutely true. Let not those who are deeply skeptical (about the ‘Day of Judgment’) influence you to lose your patience.

fa-iṣ'bir inna waʿda l-lahi ḥaqqun walā yastakhiffannaka alladhīna lā yūqinūn
