Luqman, Lukman — Dr Laleh Bakhtiar Translation

وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن یَشۡتَرِی لَهۡوَ ٱلۡحَدِیثِ لِیُضِلَّ عَن سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ بِغَیۡرِ عِلۡمࣲ وَیَتَّخِذَهَا هُزُوًاۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ لَهُمۡ عَذَابࣱ مُّهِینࣱ ۝٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And of humanity is he who exchanges diversionary conversation to cause others to go astray from the way of God without any knowledge. And he takes it to himself in mockery. Those, for them will be a despised punishment.

wamina l-nāsi man yashtarī lahwa l-ḥadīthi liyuḍilla ʿan sabīli l-lahi bighayri ʿil'min wayattakhidhahā huzuwan ulāika lahum ʿadhābun muhīnu

31:7

وَإِذَا تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَیۡهِ ءَایَـٰتُنَا وَلَّىٰ مُسۡتَكۡبِرࣰا كَأَن لَّمۡ یَسۡمَعۡهَا كَأَنَّ فِیۤ أُذُنَیۡهِ وَقۡرࣰاۖ فَبَشِّرۡهُ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِیمٍ ۝٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

When Our signs are recounted to him, he turned as one who grows arrogant, as if he had not been hearing them, as if there had been heaviness in his ears. So give him the good tidings of a painful punishment.

wa-idhā tut'lā ʿalayhi āyātunā wallā mus'takbiran ka-an lam yasmaʿhā ka-anna fī udhunayhi waqran fabashir'hu biʿadhābin alīmi

31:8

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ لَهُمۡ جَنَّـٰتُ ٱلنَّعِیمِ ۝٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Truly, those who believed and did as the ones in accord with morality, for them are Gardens of Bliss,

inna alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti lahum jannātu l-naʿīm

31:9

خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَاۖ وَعۡدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقࣰّاۚ وَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلۡحَكِیمُ ۝٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

ones who will dwell in them forever. The promise of God is true. And He is The Almighty, The Wise.

khālidīna fīhā waʿda l-lahi ḥaqqan wahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-ḥakīm

31:10

خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ بِغَیۡرِ عَمَدࣲ تَرَوۡنَهَاۖ وَأَلۡقَىٰ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ رَوَ ٰسِیَ أَن تَمِیدَ بِكُمۡ وَبَثَّ فِیهَا مِن كُلِّ دَاۤبَّةࣲۚ وَأَنزَلۡنَا مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مَاۤءࣰ فَأَنۢبَتۡنَا فِیهَا مِن كُلِّ زَوۡجࣲ كَرِیمٍ ۝١٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

He created the heavens without any pillars so that you see the heavens. And He cast firm mountains on the earth so that the earth should not vibrate with you. And He disseminated in and on it of all moving creatures. And We caused water to descend from heaven. We caused all generous, diverse pairs to develop in it.

khalaqa l-samāwāti bighayri ʿamadin tarawnahā wa-alqā fī l-arḍi rawāsiya an tamīda bikum wabatha fīhā min kulli dābbatin wa-anzalnā mina l-samāi māan fa-anbatnā fīhā min kulli zawjin karīmi

31:11

هَـٰذَا خَلۡقُ ٱللَّهِ فَأَرُونِی مَاذَا خَلَقَ ٱلَّذِینَ مِن دُونِهِۦۚ بَلِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ فِی ضَلَـٰلࣲ مُّبِینࣲ ۝١١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

This is the creation of God. Then, cause me to see what other than He created? Nay! The ones who are unjust are clearly wandering astray.

hādhā khalqu l-lahi fa-arūnī mādhā khalaqa alladhīna min dūnihi bali l-ẓālimūna fī ḍalālin mubīni

31:12

وَلَقَدۡ ءَاتَیۡنَا لُقۡمَـٰنَ ٱلۡحِكۡمَةَ أَنِ ٱشۡكُرۡ لِلَّهِۚ وَمَن یَشۡكُرۡ فَإِنَّمَا یَشۡكُرُ لِنَفۡسِهِۦۖ وَمَن كَفَرَ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَنِیٌّ حَمِیدࣱ ۝١٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And, certainly, We gave Luqman wisdom that: Give thanks to God. And whoever gives thanks, gives thanks only for himself. And whoever was ungrateful— then, truly, God is Sufficient, Worthy of Praise.

walaqad ātaynā luq'māna l-ḥik'mata ani ush'kur lillahi waman yashkur fa-innamā yashkuru linafsihi waman kafara fa-inna l-laha ghaniyyun ḥamīdu

31:13

وَإِذۡ قَالَ لُقۡمَـٰنُ لِٱبۡنِهِۦ وَهُوَ یَعِظُهُۥ یَـٰبُنَیَّ لَا تُشۡرِكۡ بِٱللَّهِۖ إِنَّ ٱلشِّرۡكَ لَظُلۡمٌ عَظِیمࣱ ۝١٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And when Luqman said to his son as he admonishes him: O my son! Ascribe not partners with God. Truly, association with God is, certainly, a tremendous injustice.

wa-idh qāla luq'mānu li-ib'nihi wahuwa yaʿiẓuhu yābunayya lā tush'rik bil-lahi inna l-shir'ka laẓul'mun ʿaẓīmu

31:14

وَوَصَّیۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ بِوَ ٰلِدَیۡهِ حَمَلَتۡهُ أُمُّهُۥ وَهۡنًا عَلَىٰ وَهۡنࣲ وَفِصَـٰلُهُۥ فِی عَامَیۡنِ أَنِ ٱشۡكُرۡ لِی وَلِوَ ٰلِدَیۡكَ إِلَیَّ ٱلۡمَصِیرُ ۝١٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And We charged the human being about ones who are his parents. His mother carried him in feebleness on feebleness and his weaning is in two years. Give thanks to Me and to ones who are thy parents. And to Me is the Homecoming.

wawaṣṣaynā l-insāna biwālidayhi ḥamalathu ummuhu wahnan ʿalā wahnin wafiṣāluhu fī ʿāmayni ani ush'kur lī waliwālidayka ilayya l-maṣīr

31:15

وَإِن جَـٰهَدَاكَ عَلَىٰۤ أَن تُشۡرِكَ بِی مَا لَیۡسَ لَكَ بِهِۦ عِلۡمࣱ فَلَا تُطِعۡهُمَاۖ وَصَاحِبۡهُمَا فِی ٱلدُّنۡیَا مَعۡرُوفࣰاۖ وَٱتَّبِعۡ سَبِیلَ مَنۡ أَنَابَ إِلَیَّۚ ثُمَّ إِلَیَّ مَرۡجِعُكُمۡ فَأُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

But if they both struggled with thee that thou hast ascribed partners with Me of what for thee is no knowledge, then, obey them not. And keep their company in the present as one who is honorable but follow the way of him who was penitent to Me. Again, to Me will be your return and I will tell you of what you had been doing.

wa-in jāhadāka ʿalā an tush'rika bī mā laysa laka bihi ʿil'mun falā tuṭiʿ'humā waṣāḥib'humā fī l-dun'yā maʿrūfan wa-ittabiʿ sabīla man anāba ilayya thumma ilayya marjiʿukum fa-unabbi-ukum bimā kuntum taʿmalūn

31:16

یَـٰبُنَیَّ إِنَّهَاۤ إِن تَكُ مِثۡقَالَ حَبَّةࣲ مِّنۡ خَرۡدَلࣲ فَتَكُن فِی صَخۡرَةٍ أَوۡ فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ أَوۡ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ یَأۡتِ بِهَا ٱللَّهُۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَطِیفٌ خَبِیرࣱ ۝١٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

O my son! Truly, even if it be the weight of a grain of a mustard seed and though it be in a rock or in the heavens or in or on the earth God will bring it. Truly, God is Subtle, Aware.

yābunayya innahā in taku mith'qāla ḥabbatin min khardalin fatakun fī ṣakhratin aw fī l-samāwāti aw fī l-arḍi yati bihā l-lahu inna l-laha laṭīfun khabīru

31:17

یَـٰبُنَیَّ أَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَأۡمُرۡ بِٱلۡمَعۡرُوفِ وَٱنۡهَ عَنِ ٱلۡمُنكَرِ وَٱصۡبِرۡ عَلَىٰ مَاۤ أَصَابَكَۖ إِنَّ ذَ ٰلِكَ مِنۡ عَزۡمِ ٱلۡأُمُورِ ۝١٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

O my son! Perform the formal prayer. And command that which is honorable. And prohibit that which is unlawful. And have thou patience with whatever lit on thee. Truly, that is the constancy of affairs.

yābunayya aqimi l-ṣalata wamur bil-maʿrūfi wa-in'ha ʿani l-munkari wa-iṣ'bir ʿalā mā aṣābaka inna dhālika min ʿazmi l-umūr

31:18

وَلَا تُصَعِّرۡ خَدَّكَ لِلنَّاسِ وَلَا تَمۡشِ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مَرَحًاۖ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یُحِبُّ كُلَّ مُخۡتَالࣲ فَخُورࣲ ۝١٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And turn not thy cheek away from humanity nor walk through the earth exultantly. Truly, God loves not any proud boaster.

walā tuṣaʿʿir khaddaka lilnnāsi walā tamshi fī l-arḍi maraḥan inna l-laha lā yuḥibbu kulla mukh'tālin fakhūri

31:19

وَٱقۡصِدۡ فِی مَشۡیِكَ وَٱغۡضُضۡ مِن صَوۡتِكَۚ إِنَّ أَنكَرَ ٱلۡأَصۡوَ ٰتِ لَصَوۡتُ ٱلۡحَمِیرِ ۝١٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And be moderate in thy walking and lower thy voice. Truly the most horrible of voices is, certainly, the voice of the donkey.

wa-iq'ṣid fī mashyika wa-ugh'ḍuḍ min ṣawtika inna ankara l-aṣwāti laṣawtu l-ḥamīr

31:20

أَلَمۡ تَرَوۡا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَخَّرَ لَكُم مَّا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَمَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَأَسۡبَغَ عَلَیۡكُمۡ نِعَمَهُۥ ظَـٰهِرَةࣰ وَبَاطِنَةࣰۗ وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن یُجَـٰدِلُ فِی ٱللَّهِ بِغَیۡرِ عِلۡمࣲ وَلَا هُدࣰى وَلَا كِتَـٰبࣲ مُّنِیرࣲ ۝٢٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Consider you not that God caused to become subservient to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in and on the earth and lavished on you His divine blessing, that which is manifest and that which is inward and yet most of humanity is he who disputes about God without knowledge and with no guidance and without an illuminating Book.

alam taraw anna l-laha sakhara lakum mā fī l-samāwāti wamā fī l-arḍi wa-asbagha ʿalaykum niʿamahu ẓāhiratan wabāṭinatan wamina l-nāsi man yujādilu fī l-lahi bighayri ʿil'min walā hudan walā kitābin munīri

31:21

وَإِذَا قِیلَ لَهُمُ ٱتَّبِعُوا۟ مَاۤ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ قَالُوا۟ بَلۡ نَتَّبِعُ مَا وَجَدۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ ءَابَاۤءَنَاۤۚ أَوَ لَوۡ كَانَ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُ یَدۡعُوهُمۡ إِلَىٰ عَذَابِ ٱلسَّعِیرِ ۝٢١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And when it was said to them: Follow what God caused to descend. They said: Nay! We will follow what we found our fathers on. Even if it Satan had been calling them to the punishment of the blaze?

wa-idhā qīla lahumu ittabiʿū mā anzala l-lahu qālū bal nattabiʿu mā wajadnā ʿalayhi ābāanā awalaw kāna l-shayṭānu yadʿūhum ilā ʿadhābi l-saʿīr

31:22

۞ وَمَن یُسۡلِمۡ وَجۡهَهُۥۤ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَهُوَ مُحۡسِنࣱ فَقَدِ ٱسۡتَمۡسَكَ بِٱلۡعُرۡوَةِ ٱلۡوُثۡقَىٰۗ وَإِلَى ٱللَّهِ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلۡأُمُورِ ۝٢٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And whoever submits his face to God while he is one who is a doer of good, then, surely, he held fast to the most firm handhold. And to God is the Ultimate End of affairs.

waman yus'lim wajhahu ilā l-lahi wahuwa muḥ'sinun faqadi is'tamsaka bil-ʿur'wati l-wuth'qā wa-ilā l-lahi ʿāqibatu l-umūr

31:23

وَمَن كَفَرَ فَلَا یَحۡزُنكَ كُفۡرُهُۥۤۚ إِلَیۡنَا مَرۡجِعُهُمۡ فَنُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا عَمِلُوۤا۟ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِیمُۢ بِذَاتِ ٱلصُّدُورِ ۝٢٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And whoever was ungrateful, let not his ingratitude dishearten thee. To Us is their return and We will tell them what they did. Truly, God is Knowing of what is in the breasts.

waman kafara falā yaḥzunka kuf'ruhu ilaynā marjiʿuhum fanunabbi-uhum bimā ʿamilū inna l-laha ʿalīmun bidhāti l-ṣudūr

31:24

نُمَتِّعُهُمۡ قَلِیلࣰا ثُمَّ نَضۡطَرُّهُمۡ إِلَىٰ عَذَابٍ غَلِیظࣲ ۝٢٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

We give them enjoyment for a little while. Again, We will compel them to a harsh punishment.

numattiʿuhum qalīlan thumma naḍṭarruhum ilā ʿadhābin ghalīẓi

31:25

وَلَىِٕن سَأَلۡتَهُم مَّنۡ خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ لَیَقُولُنَّ ٱللَّهُۚ قُلِ ٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِۚ بَلۡ أَكۡثَرُهُمۡ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٢٥

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And if thou hadst asked them who created the heavens and the earth, they will certainly say: God! Say: The Praise belongs to God! But most of them know not.

wala-in sa-altahum man khalaqa l-samāwāti wal-arḍa layaqūlunna l-lahu quli l-ḥamdu lillahi bal aktharuhum lā yaʿlamūn

31:26

لِلَّهِ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلۡغَنِیُّ ٱلۡحَمِیدُ ۝٢٦

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

To God belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. Truly, God, He is The Sufficient, The Worthy of Praise.

lillahi mā fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi inna l-laha huwa l-ghaniyu l-ḥamīd

31:27

وَلَوۡ أَنَّمَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مِن شَجَرَةٍ أَقۡلَـٰمࣱ وَٱلۡبَحۡرُ یَمُدُّهُۥ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِۦ سَبۡعَةُ أَبۡحُرࣲ مَّا نَفِدَتۡ كَلِمَـٰتُ ٱللَّهِۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَزِیزٌ حَكِیمࣱ ۝٢٧

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And if trees on the earth were only pens and the sea causes to increase after that with seven more seas that were ink, yet the Words of God would not come to an end. Truly, God is Almighty, Wise.

walaw annamā fī l-arḍi min shajaratin aqlāmun wal-baḥru yamudduhu min baʿdihi sabʿatu abḥurin mā nafidat kalimātu l-lahi inna l-laha ʿazīzun ḥakīmu

31:28

مَّا خَلۡقُكُمۡ وَلَا بَعۡثُكُمۡ إِلَّا كَنَفۡسࣲ وَ ٰحِدَةٍۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَمِیعُۢ بَصِیرٌ ۝٢٨

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Your creation and your Upraising are not but like that of a single soul. Truly, God is Hearing, Seeing.

mā khalqukum walā baʿthukum illā kanafsin wāḥidatin inna l-laha samīʿun baṣīru

31:29

أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ یُولِجُ ٱلَّیۡلَ فِی ٱلنَّهَارِ وَیُولِجُ ٱلنَّهَارَ فِی ٱلَّیۡلِ وَسَخَّرَ ٱلشَّمۡسَ وَٱلۡقَمَرَۖ كُلࣱّ یَجۡرِیۤ إِلَىٰۤ أَجَلࣲ مُّسَمࣰّى وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ خَبِیرࣱ ۝٢٩

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Hast thou not considered that God causes the nighttime to be interposed into the daytime and causes the daytime to be interposed into the nighttime and caused the sun to become subservient and the moon, each run for a term, that which is determined and that God is Aware of what you do?

alam tara anna l-laha yūliju al-layla fī l-nahāri wayūliju l-nahāra fī al-layli wasakhara l-shamsa wal-qamara kullun yajrī ilā ajalin musamman wa-anna l-laha bimā taʿmalūna khabīru

31:30

ذَ ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلۡحَقُّ وَأَنَّ مَا یَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِهِ ٱلۡبَـٰطِلُ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلۡعَلِیُّ ٱلۡكَبِیرُ ۝٣٠

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

That is because God, He is The Truth and what they call to other than Him is falsehood. And that God, He is The Lofty, The Great!

dhālika bi-anna l-laha huwa l-ḥaqu wa-anna mā yadʿūna min dūnihi l-bāṭilu wa-anna l-laha huwa l-ʿaliyu l-kabīr

31:31

أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّ ٱلۡفُلۡكَ تَجۡرِی فِی ٱلۡبَحۡرِ بِنِعۡمَتِ ٱللَّهِ لِیُرِیَكُم مِّنۡ ءَایَـٰتِهِۦۤۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّكُلِّ صَبَّارࣲ شَكُورࣲ ۝٣١

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Hast thou not considered that the boats run through the sea by the divine blessing of God that He causes you to see His signs? Truly in that are signs for every enduring, grateful one.

alam tara anna l-ful'ka tajrī fī l-baḥri biniʿ'mati l-lahi liyuriyakum min āyātihi inna fī dhālika laāyātin likulli ṣabbārin shakūri

31:32

وَإِذَا غَشِیَهُم مَّوۡجࣱ كَٱلظُّلَلِ دَعَوُا۟ ٱللَّهَ مُخۡلِصِینَ لَهُ ٱلدِّینَ فَلَمَّا نَجَّىٰهُمۡ إِلَى ٱلۡبَرِّ فَمِنۡهُم مُّقۡتَصِدࣱۚ وَمَا یَجۡحَدُ بِءَایَـٰتِنَاۤ إِلَّا كُلُّ خَتَّارࣲ كَفُورࣲ ۝٣٢

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

And when a wave overcame them like an overshadowing, they called to God as ones who are sincere and devoted in the way of life to Him. Then, when He delivered them to dry land among them are ones who halt between two opinions. And none negates Our signs but every ungrateful turncoat.

wa-idhā ghashiyahum mawjun kal-ẓulali daʿawū l-laha mukh'liṣīna lahu l-dīna falammā najjāhum ilā l-bari famin'hum muq'taṣidun wamā yajḥadu biāyātinā illā kullu khattārin kafūri

31:33

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ ٱتَّقُوا۟ رَبَّكُمۡ وَٱخۡشَوۡا۟ یَوۡمࣰا لَّا یَجۡزِی وَالِدٌ عَن وَلَدِهِۦ وَلَا مَوۡلُودٌ هُوَ جَازٍ عَن وَالِدِهِۦ شَیۡءًاۚ إِنَّ وَعۡدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقࣱّۖ فَلَا تَغُرَّنَّكُمُ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَلَا یَغُرَّنَّكُم بِٱللَّهِ ٱلۡغَرُورُ ۝٣٣

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

O humanity! Be Godfearing of your Lord, and dread a Day when recompense will not be given by a child to one to whom the child is born, nor will one to whom a child is born be one who gives recompense for the one who is born at all. Truly, the promise of God is True so let not this present life delude you nor let the deluder delude you about God.

yāayyuhā l-nāsu ittaqū rabbakum wa-ikh'shaw yawman lā yajzī wālidun ʿan waladihi walā mawlūdun huwa jāzin ʿan wālidihi shayan inna waʿda l-lahi ḥaqqun falā taghurrannakumu l-ḥayatu l-dun'yā walā yaghurrannakum bil-lahi l-gharūr

31:34

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عِندَهُۥ عِلۡمُ ٱلسَّاعَةِ وَیُنَزِّلُ ٱلۡغَیۡثَ وَیَعۡلَمُ مَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡحَامِۖ وَمَا تَدۡرِی نَفۡسࣱ مَّاذَا تَكۡسِبُ غَدࣰاۖ وَمَا تَدۡرِی نَفۡسُۢ بِأَیِّ أَرۡضࣲ تَمُوتُۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِیمٌ خَبِیرُۢ ۝٣٤

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar

Truly, the knowledge of the Hour is with God. And He sends plenteous rain water down. And He knows what is in the wombs. And no soul is informed of what it will earn tomorrow. And no soul is informed in what region it will die. Truly, God is Knowing, Aware.

inna l-laha ʿindahu ʿil'mu l-sāʿati wayunazzilu l-ghaytha wayaʿlamu mā fī l-arḥāmi wamā tadrī nafsun mādhā taksibu ghadan wamā tadrī nafsun bi-ayyi arḍin tamūtu inna l-laha ʿalīmun khabīru
