1 Believers will be Successful

الۤمۤ ۝١

Alif. Lam. Mim.

تِلۡكَ ءَایَـٰتُ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ ٱلۡحَكِیمِ ۝٢

These are the verses of the book which is wisely dispensed.

til'ka āyātu l-kitābi l-ḥakīm

هُدࣰى وَرَحۡمَةࣰ لِّلۡمُحۡسِنِینَ ۝٣

It is a guidance (huda) and a mercy for those who act in excellence.

hudan waraḥmatan lil'muḥ'sinīn

ٱلَّذِینَ یُقِیمُونَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَیُؤۡتُونَ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَهُم بِٱلۡءَاخِرَةِ هُمۡ یُوقِنُونَ ۝٤

Those who establish the prayer and give out the sanctifying dues while they have certitude about the hereafter.

alladhīna yuqīmūna l-ṣalata wayu'tūna l-zakata wahum bil-ākhirati hum yūqinūn

أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ عَلَىٰ هُدࣰى مِّن رَّبِّهِمۡۖ وَأُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡلِحُونَ ۝٥

It is they who are on a right guidance from their Lord. And it is they who are the prosperers.

ulāika ʿalā hudan min rabbihim wa-ulāika humu l-muf'liḥūn

وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن یَشۡتَرِی لَهۡوَ ٱلۡحَدِیثِ لِیُضِلَّ عَن سَبِیلِ ٱللَّهِ بِغَیۡرِ عِلۡمࣲ وَیَتَّخِذَهَا هُزُوًاۚ أُو۟لَـٰۤىِٕكَ لَهُمۡ عَذَابࣱ مُّهِینࣱ ۝٦

From among the mankind is such who buy idle talk in order to misguide from the way of Allah without any knowledge and so that he may take it (the way of Allah) for a matter of jest. It is they for whom there is a debasing punishment.

wamina l-nāsi man yashtarī lahwa l-ḥadīthi liyuḍilla ʿan sabīli l-lahi bighayri ʿil'min wayattakhidhahā huzuwan ulāika lahum ʿadhābun muhīnu

وَإِذَا تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَیۡهِ ءَایَـٰتُنَا وَلَّىٰ مُسۡتَكۡبِرࣰا كَأَن لَّمۡ یَسۡمَعۡهَا كَأَنَّ فِیۤ أُذُنَیۡهِ وَقۡرࣰاۖ فَبَشِّرۡهُ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِیمٍ ۝٧

When Our signs are related unto him, he turns his back in arrogance as though he never heard them as though there was a heavy weight in both his ears. So give him the glad tidings of a painful punishment.

wa-idhā tut'lā ʿalayhi āyātunā wallā mus'takbiran ka-an lam yasmaʿhā ka-anna fī udhunayhi waqran fabashir'hu biʿadhābin alīmi

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ لَهُمۡ جَنَّـٰتُ ٱلنَّعِیمِ ۝٨

Truly those who believe and work righteous deeds, there will be for them gardens of bliss

inna alladhīna āmanū waʿamilū l-ṣāliḥāti lahum jannātu l-naʿīm

خَـٰلِدِینَ فِیهَاۖ وَعۡدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقࣰّاۚ وَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِیزُ ٱلۡحَكِیمُ ۝٩

to abide therein forever. The promise of Allah come true. It is He who is The All-mighty, The All-wise.

khālidīna fīhā waʿda l-lahi ḥaqqan wahuwa l-ʿazīzu l-ḥakīm

خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ بِغَیۡرِ عَمَدࣲ تَرَوۡنَهَاۖ وَأَلۡقَىٰ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ رَوَ ٰسِیَ أَن تَمِیدَ بِكُمۡ وَبَثَّ فِیهَا مِن كُلِّ دَاۤبَّةࣲۚ وَأَنزَلۡنَا مِنَ ٱلسَّمَاۤءِ مَاۤءࣰ فَأَنۢبَتۡنَا فِیهَا مِن كُلِّ زَوۡجࣲ كَرِیمٍ ۝١٠

He created the heavens without any pillar that you can see and He cast in the earth mountains lest it oscillate with you and He spread in it from every creature and We sent down water from the heaven and then We caused to grow therein of every graceful kind.

khalaqa l-samāwāti bighayri ʿamadin tarawnahā wa-alqā fī l-arḍi rawāsiya an tamīda bikum wabatha fīhā min kulli dābbatin wa-anzalnā mina l-samāi māan fa-anbatnā fīhā min kulli zawjin karīmi

هَـٰذَا خَلۡقُ ٱللَّهِ فَأَرُونِی مَاذَا خَلَقَ ٱلَّذِینَ مِن دُونِهِۦۚ بَلِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ فِی ضَلَـٰلࣲ مُّبِینࣲ ۝١١

This is the creation of Allah show me then what those besides Him have created. Nay! The wrongdoers are in evident misguidance.

hādhā khalqu l-lahi fa-arūnī mādhā khalaqa alladhīna min dūnihi bali l-ẓālimūna fī ḍalālin mubīni

2 Luqman's Advice to his Son

وَلَقَدۡ ءَاتَیۡنَا لُقۡمَـٰنَ ٱلۡحِكۡمَةَ أَنِ ٱشۡكُرۡ لِلَّهِۚ وَمَن یَشۡكُرۡ فَإِنَّمَا یَشۡكُرُ لِنَفۡسِهِۦۖ وَمَن كَفَرَ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَنِیٌّ حَمِیدࣱ ۝١٢

And We indeed gave the wisdom unto Luqman saying, “Now do offer gratitude to Allah.” Thus whosoever offers gratitude [to Allah], he only thus offers gratitude for the good of his own soul and whoever is ungrateful, truly Allah is All-self-sufficient, All-worthy of praise.

walaqad ātaynā luq'māna l-ḥik'mata ani ush'kur lillahi waman yashkur fa-innamā yashkuru linafsihi waman kafara fa-inna l-laha ghaniyyun ḥamīdu

وَإِذۡ قَالَ لُقۡمَـٰنُ لِٱبۡنِهِۦ وَهُوَ یَعِظُهُۥ یَـٰبُنَیَّ لَا تُشۡرِكۡ بِٱللَّهِۖ إِنَّ ٱلشِّرۡكَ لَظُلۡمٌ عَظِیمࣱ ۝١٣

And when Luqman said to his son while he admonished him, “O my son! Do not ascribe partners to Allah. Truly ascribing partners to Allah is an egregious wrongdoing.”

wa-idh qāla luq'mānu li-ib'nihi wahuwa yaʿiẓuhu yābunayya lā tush'rik bil-lahi inna l-shir'ka laẓul'mun ʿaẓīmu

وَوَصَّیۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنَ بِوَ ٰلِدَیۡهِ حَمَلَتۡهُ أُمُّهُۥ وَهۡنًا عَلَىٰ وَهۡنࣲ وَفِصَـٰلُهُۥ فِی عَامَیۡنِ أَنِ ٱشۡكُرۡ لِی وَلِوَ ٰلِدَیۡكَ إِلَیَّ ٱلۡمَصِیرُ ۝١٤

And We have exhorted the human being regarding his parents. His mother carried him in weakness upon weakness and his weaning is in two years. So offer gratitude to Me and to your parents, unto Me is the place of final coming.

wawaṣṣaynā l-insāna biwālidayhi ḥamalathu ummuhu wahnan ʿalā wahnin wafiṣāluhu fī ʿāmayni ani ush'kur lī waliwālidayka ilayya l-maṣīr

وَإِن جَـٰهَدَاكَ عَلَىٰۤ أَن تُشۡرِكَ بِی مَا لَیۡسَ لَكَ بِهِۦ عِلۡمࣱ فَلَا تُطِعۡهُمَاۖ وَصَاحِبۡهُمَا فِی ٱلدُّنۡیَا مَعۡرُوفࣰاۖ وَٱتَّبِعۡ سَبِیلَ مَنۡ أَنَابَ إِلَیَّۚ ثُمَّ إِلَیَّ مَرۡجِعُكُمۡ فَأُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ۝١٥

But if they two urge you to ascribe such things as partners to Me for which you have no knowledge, then obey them not but keep them a goodly company in this world and follow the way of one who has turned back to Me. Then unto Me will be your place of return and then I will inform you about all that you used to do.

wa-in jāhadāka ʿalā an tush'rika bī mā laysa laka bihi ʿil'mun falā tuṭiʿ'humā waṣāḥib'humā fī l-dun'yā maʿrūfan wa-ittabiʿ sabīla man anāba ilayya thumma ilayya marjiʿukum fa-unabbi-ukum bimā kuntum taʿmalūn

یَـٰبُنَیَّ إِنَّهَاۤ إِن تَكُ مِثۡقَالَ حَبَّةࣲ مِّنۡ خَرۡدَلࣲ فَتَكُن فِی صَخۡرَةٍ أَوۡ فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ أَوۡ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ یَأۡتِ بِهَا ٱللَّهُۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَطِیفٌ خَبِیرࣱ ۝١٦

“O my son! Were it but the weight of a seed of mustard and it were in a rock or in the heavens or in the earth, Allah will bring it. Truly Allah is All-subtle, All-acquainted.

yābunayya innahā in taku mith'qāla ḥabbatin min khardalin fatakun fī ṣakhratin aw fī l-samāwāti aw fī l-arḍi yati bihā l-lahu inna l-laha laṭīfun khabīru

یَـٰبُنَیَّ أَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَأۡمُرۡ بِٱلۡمَعۡرُوفِ وَٱنۡهَ عَنِ ٱلۡمُنكَرِ وَٱصۡبِرۡ عَلَىٰ مَاۤ أَصَابَكَۖ إِنَّ ذَ ٰلِكَ مِنۡ عَزۡمِ ٱلۡأُمُورِ ۝١٧

O my son! Establish the prayer and command unto kindness and forbid from meanness and bear with patience whatever happens to you. Truly that is among the most resolute of all the affairs.

yābunayya aqimi l-ṣalata wamur bil-maʿrūfi wa-in'ha ʿani l-munkari wa-iṣ'bir ʿalā mā aṣābaka inna dhālika min ʿazmi l-umūr

وَلَا تُصَعِّرۡ خَدَّكَ لِلنَّاسِ وَلَا تَمۡشِ فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مَرَحًاۖ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا یُحِبُّ كُلَّ مُخۡتَالࣲ فَخُورࣲ ۝١٨

And do not turn your cheek arrogantly to men and do not walk in the earth exultantly. Truly Allah does not love any self-conceited and self-vaunting.

walā tuṣaʿʿir khaddaka lilnnāsi walā tamshi fī l-arḍi maraḥan inna l-laha lā yuḥibbu kulla mukh'tālin fakhūri

وَٱقۡصِدۡ فِی مَشۡیِكَ وَٱغۡضُضۡ مِن صَوۡتِكَۚ إِنَّ أَنكَرَ ٱلۡأَصۡوَ ٰتِ لَصَوۡتُ ٱلۡحَمِیرِ ۝١٩

And take a mid-course in your walk and lower from your voice. Truly the most detestable of all sounds in the braying of the donkeys.”

wa-iq'ṣid fī mashyika wa-ugh'ḍuḍ min ṣawtika inna ankara l-aṣwāti laṣawtu l-ḥamīr

3 Greatness of Divine Power

أَلَمۡ تَرَوۡا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَخَّرَ لَكُم مَّا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَمَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَأَسۡبَغَ عَلَیۡكُمۡ نِعَمَهُۥ ظَـٰهِرَةࣰ وَبَاطِنَةࣰۗ وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن یُجَـٰدِلُ فِی ٱللَّهِ بِغَیۡرِ عِلۡمࣲ وَلَا هُدࣰى وَلَا كِتَـٰبࣲ مُّنِیرࣲ ۝٢٠

Have you not seen that Allah has subjected to your service all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth and has abundantly bestowed on you His blessings outwardly and inwardly. But among humankind is one who argues about Allah without any knowledge or any guidance or any illuminating book.

alam taraw anna l-laha sakhara lakum mā fī l-samāwāti wamā fī l-arḍi wa-asbagha ʿalaykum niʿamahu ẓāhiratan wabāṭinatan wamina l-nāsi man yujādilu fī l-lahi bighayri ʿil'min walā hudan walā kitābin munīri

وَإِذَا قِیلَ لَهُمُ ٱتَّبِعُوا۟ مَاۤ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ قَالُوا۟ بَلۡ نَتَّبِعُ مَا وَجَدۡنَا عَلَیۡهِ ءَابَاۤءَنَاۤۚ أَوَ لَوۡ كَانَ ٱلشَّیۡطَـٰنُ یَدۡعُوهُمۡ إِلَىٰ عَذَابِ ٱلسَّعِیرِ ۝٢١

And when it is said unto them, “Follow that which Allah has sent down” They say, “Nay! We follow that which we have found our fathers on.” What! Even though it is Satan calling them to the punishment of a blazing fire?

wa-idhā qīla lahumu ittabiʿū mā anzala l-lahu qālū bal nattabiʿu mā wajadnā ʿalayhi ābāanā awalaw kāna l-shayṭānu yadʿūhum ilā ʿadhābi l-saʿīr

۞ وَمَن یُسۡلِمۡ وَجۡهَهُۥۤ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَهُوَ مُحۡسِنࣱ فَقَدِ ٱسۡتَمۡسَكَ بِٱلۡعُرۡوَةِ ٱلۡوُثۡقَىٰۗ وَإِلَى ٱللَّهِ عَـٰقِبَةُ ٱلۡأُمُورِ ۝٢٢

But whosoever submits his entire being unto Allah while he acts in excellence, he indeed has held unto the most secured rope and unto Allah is the ending of all the matters.

waman yus'lim wajhahu ilā l-lahi wahuwa muḥ'sinun faqadi is'tamsaka bil-ʿur'wati l-wuth'qā wa-ilā l-lahi ʿāqibatu l-umūr

وَمَن كَفَرَ فَلَا یَحۡزُنكَ كُفۡرُهُۥۤۚ إِلَیۡنَا مَرۡجِعُهُمۡ فَنُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا عَمِلُوۤا۟ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِیمُۢ بِذَاتِ ٱلصُّدُورِ ۝٢٣

But whosoever disbelieves then let not his disbelief aggrieve you. Unto Us is their place of return. Then We will inform them about all that they did. Truly Allah is All-knowing regarding the essence of the bosoms.

waman kafara falā yaḥzunka kuf'ruhu ilaynā marjiʿuhum fanunabbi-uhum bimā ʿamilū inna l-laha ʿalīmun bidhāti l-ṣudūr

نُمَتِّعُهُمۡ قَلِیلࣰا ثُمَّ نَضۡطَرُّهُمۡ إِلَىٰ عَذَابٍ غَلِیظࣲ ۝٢٤

We make them enjoy a little then We will drive them to a formidable punishment.

numattiʿuhum qalīlan thumma naḍṭarruhum ilā ʿadhābin ghalīẓi

وَلَىِٕن سَأَلۡتَهُم مَّنۡ خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ لَیَقُولُنَّ ٱللَّهُۚ قُلِ ٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِۚ بَلۡ أَكۡثَرُهُمۡ لَا یَعۡلَمُونَ ۝٢٥

And if We ask them, “Who created the heavens and the earth?”, They will certainly say, “Allah” Say, “The praise is for Allah.” Nay! Most of them know not.

wala-in sa-altahum man khalaqa l-samāwāti wal-arḍa layaqūlunna l-lahu quli l-ḥamdu lillahi bal aktharuhum lā yaʿlamūn

لِلَّهِ مَا فِی ٱلسَّمَـٰوَ ٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلۡغَنِیُّ ٱلۡحَمِیدُ ۝٢٦

To Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and in the earth. Truly it is Allah who is The All-self-sufficient, The All-praiseworthy.

lillahi mā fī l-samāwāti wal-arḍi inna l-laha huwa l-ghaniyu l-ḥamīd

وَلَوۡ أَنَّمَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مِن شَجَرَةٍ أَقۡلَـٰمࣱ وَٱلۡبَحۡرُ یَمُدُّهُۥ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِۦ سَبۡعَةُ أَبۡحُرࣲ مَّا نَفِدَتۡ كَلِمَـٰتُ ٱللَّهِۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَزِیزٌ حَكِیمࣱ ۝٢٧

And if all the trees in the earth were but pens and the ocean [was an ink] reinforced from behind by seven oceans, Allah’s words will not be exhausted. Truly Allah is All-mighty, All-wise.

walaw annamā fī l-arḍi min shajaratin aqlāmun wal-baḥru yamudduhu min baʿdihi sabʿatu abḥurin mā nafidat kalimātu l-lahi inna l-laha ʿazīzun ḥakīmu

مَّا خَلۡقُكُمۡ وَلَا بَعۡثُكُمۡ إِلَّا كَنَفۡسࣲ وَ ٰحِدَةٍۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَمِیعُۢ بَصِیرٌ ۝٢٨

Your creation and your resurrection is but like [the creation and resurrection of] one soul. Truly Allah is All-hearing, All-seeing.

mā khalqukum walā baʿthukum illā kanafsin wāḥidatin inna l-laha samīʿun baṣīru

أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ یُولِجُ ٱلَّیۡلَ فِی ٱلنَّهَارِ وَیُولِجُ ٱلنَّهَارَ فِی ٱلَّیۡلِ وَسَخَّرَ ٱلشَّمۡسَ وَٱلۡقَمَرَۖ كُلࣱّ یَجۡرِیۤ إِلَىٰۤ أَجَلࣲ مُّسَمࣰّى وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ خَبِیرࣱ ۝٢٩

Have you not seen that Allah makes the night to enter into the day and makes the day to enter into the night and He has made the sun and the moon subject to His command? Each of them sailing to an appointed term and that Allah is All-acquainted with all that you do.

alam tara anna l-laha yūliju al-layla fī l-nahāri wayūliju l-nahāra fī al-layli wasakhara l-shamsa wal-qamara kullun yajrī ilā ajalin musamman wa-anna l-laha bimā taʿmalūna khabīru

ذَ ٰلِكَ بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلۡحَقُّ وَأَنَّ مَا یَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِهِ ٱلۡبَـٰطِلُ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلۡعَلِیُّ ٱلۡكَبِیرُ ۝٣٠

That is because Allah it is He who is The Truth and that all that they invoke besides Him is the falsehood and truly Allah it is He who is The All-high, The All-great.

dhālika bi-anna l-laha huwa l-ḥaqu wa-anna mā yadʿūna min dūnihi l-bāṭilu wa-anna l-laha huwa l-ʿaliyu l-kabīr

4 The Doom comes

أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّ ٱلۡفُلۡكَ تَجۡرِی فِی ٱلۡبَحۡرِ بِنِعۡمَتِ ٱللَّهِ لِیُرِیَكُم مِّنۡ ءَایَـٰتِهِۦۤۚ إِنَّ فِی ذَ ٰلِكَ لَءَایَـٰتࣲ لِّكُلِّ صَبَّارࣲ شَكُورࣲ ۝٣١

Have you not seen that the ship sails in the ocean by the blessings of Allah [the gentle wind] so that He may show you from His signs? Truly in that are signs for anyone who is patient grateful.

alam tara anna l-ful'ka tajrī fī l-baḥri biniʿ'mati l-lahi liyuriyakum min āyātihi inna fī dhālika laāyātin likulli ṣabbārin shakūri

وَإِذَا غَشِیَهُم مَّوۡجࣱ كَٱلظُّلَلِ دَعَوُا۟ ٱللَّهَ مُخۡلِصِینَ لَهُ ٱلدِّینَ فَلَمَّا نَجَّىٰهُمۡ إِلَى ٱلۡبَرِّ فَمِنۡهُم مُّقۡتَصِدࣱۚ وَمَا یَجۡحَدُ بِءَایَـٰتِنَاۤ إِلَّا كُلُّ خَتَّارࣲ كَفُورࣲ ۝٣٢

And when a wave assails them like clouds, they invoke Allah making the religion sincere for Him, but when He saves them to the land then among them are such who become mediocre [in their religion] but none denies Our signs except one who is self-conceited, ungrateful.

wa-idhā ghashiyahum mawjun kal-ẓulali daʿawū l-laha mukh'liṣīna lahu l-dīna falammā najjāhum ilā l-bari famin'hum muq'taṣidun wamā yajḥadu biāyātinā illā kullu khattārin kafūri

یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ ٱتَّقُوا۟ رَبَّكُمۡ وَٱخۡشَوۡا۟ یَوۡمࣰا لَّا یَجۡزِی وَالِدٌ عَن وَلَدِهِۦ وَلَا مَوۡلُودٌ هُوَ جَازٍ عَن وَالِدِهِۦ شَیۡءًاۚ إِنَّ وَعۡدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقࣱّۖ فَلَا تَغُرَّنَّكُمُ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡیَا وَلَا یَغُرَّنَّكُم بِٱللَّهِ ٱلۡغَرُورُ ۝٣٣

O you the mankind, revere you Lord and fear a day when no parent will avail anything of his child nor will a child be of any avail to his parent. Truly Allah’s promise is true therefore let not the life of this world deceive you and let not the arch deceiver deceive you about Allah.

yāayyuhā l-nāsu ittaqū rabbakum wa-ikh'shaw yawman lā yajzī wālidun ʿan waladihi walā mawlūdun huwa jāzin ʿan wālidihi shayan inna waʿda l-lahi ḥaqqun falā taghurrannakumu l-ḥayatu l-dun'yā walā yaghurrannakum bil-lahi l-gharūr

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عِندَهُۥ عِلۡمُ ٱلسَّاعَةِ وَیُنَزِّلُ ٱلۡغَیۡثَ وَیَعۡلَمُ مَا فِی ٱلۡأَرۡحَامِۖ وَمَا تَدۡرِی نَفۡسࣱ مَّاذَا تَكۡسِبُ غَدࣰاۖ وَمَا تَدۡرِی نَفۡسُۢ بِأَیِّ أَرۡضࣲ تَمُوتُۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِیمٌ خَبِیرُۢ ۝٣٤

Truly it is Allah, with Him is the knowledge of the Hour and He sends down the rain and He knows all that is in the wombs and no soul knows what it is going to earn tomorrow and no soul knows in which land it will die. Truly Allah is All-knowing, All-acquainted.
