1 The Folding Up

إِذَا الشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ

Torres Al Haneef (partial translation)

"When the sun is folded up,"

Itha alshshamsu kuwwirat

وَإِذَا النُّجُومُ انكَدَرَتْ

"and when the stars fall,"

Wa-itha alnnujoomu inkadarat

وَإِذَا الْجِبَالُ سُيِّرَتْ

"and when the mountains vanish,"

Wa-itha aljibalu suyyirat

وَإِذَا الْعِشَارُ عُطِّلَتْ

"and when the pregnant camels (ready to deliver their young) are abandoned,"

Wa-itha alAAisharu AAuttilat

وَإِذَا الْوُحُوشُ حُشِرَتْ

"and when the wild animals are herded together,"

Wa-itha alwuhooshu hushirat

وَإِذَا الْبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتْ

"and when the oceans are on fire,"

Wa-itha albiharu sujjirat

وَإِذَا النُّفُوسُ زُوِّجَتْ

"and when the souls are reunited,"

Wa-itha alnnufoosu zuwwijat

وَإِذَا الْمَوْءُودَةُ سُئِلَتْ

and when the baby girl who was buried alive is aske

Wa-itha almawoodatu su-ilat

بِأَيِّ ذَنبٍ قُتِلَتْ

"for what crime she was killed,"

Bi-ayyi thanbin qutilat

وَإِذَا الصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتْ

"and when the scrolls are spread open,"

Wa-itha alssuhufu nushirat

وَإِذَا السَّمَاءُ كُشِطَتْ

"and when the sky is torn off,"

Wa-itha alssamao kushitat

وَإِذَا الْجَحِيمُ سُعِّرَتْ

"and when Hell is set to plaze,"

Wa-itha aljaheemu suAAAAirat

وَإِذَا الْجَنَّةُ أُزْلِفَتْ

"and when the Gardenis brought near,"

Wa-itha aljannatu ozlifat

عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٌ مَّا أَحْضَرَتْ

(then) every soul will know what it has prepared (for itself)

AAalimat nafsun ma ahdarat

فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِالْخُنَّسِ

"So, I call to witness the planets that recede,"

Fala oqsimu bialkhunnasi

الْجَوَارِ الْكُنَّسِ

"and rise and set,"

Aljawari alkunnasi

وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا عَسْعَسَ

"and the night as it darkens,"

Waallayli itha AAasAAasa

وَالصُّبْحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّسَ

"and the dawn as it breathes (away the darkness),"

Waalssubhi itha tanaffasa

إِنَّهُ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٍ كَرِيمٍ

"that this is truly the word of a noble Messenger (from Allah),"

Innahu laqawlu rasoolin kareemin

ذِي قُوَّةٍ عِندَ ذِي الْعَرْشِ مَكِينٍ

"he (Jibr???l) is powerful, and has a place of honour with the Lord of the Throne,"

Thee quwwatin AAinda thee alAAarshi makeenin

مُّطَاعٍ ثَمَّ أَمِينٍ

he is obeyed and trustworthy

MutaAAin thamma ameenin

وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجْنُونٍ

And your companion (Mu?ammad) is not crazy

Wama sahibukum bimajnoonin

وَلَقَدْ رَآهُ بِالْأُفُقِ الْمُبِينِ

"He saw him (Jibr???l) without any doubt, on the clear horizon,"

Walaqad raahu bialofuqi almubeeni

وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى الْغَيْبِ بِضَنِينٍ

Torres Al Haneef (partial translation)

"and he is not hiding anything of the Unseen,"

Wama huwa AAala alghaybi bidaneenin

وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَيْطَانٍ رَّجِيمٍ

and this is not the speech of a cursed devil

Wama huwa biqawli shaytanin rajeemin

فَأَيْنَ تَذْهَبُونَ

"Where, then, are you going?"

Faayna tathhaboona

إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَالَمِينَ

"This is no less than a Reminder to all creation,"

In huwa illa thikrun lilAAalameena

لِمَن شَاءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَسْتَقِيمَ

to those of you who wish to walk straight

Liman shaa minkum an yastaqeema

وَمَا تَشَاءُونَ إِلَّا أَن يَشَاءَ اللَّهُ رَبُّ الْعَالَمِينَ

and you will not wish to unless Allah wills -- the Lord of the Worlds

Wama tashaoona illa an yashaa Allahu rabbu alAAalameena
