1 Default in Duty

وَيْلٌ لِّلْمُطَفِّفِينَ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

Misery to those who deal in fraud, (woe be unto those who cheat)—

Waylun lilmutaffifeena

الَّذِينَ إِذَا اكْتَالُوا عَلَى النَّاسِ يَسْتَوْفُونَ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

Those who demand full measure, when they have to receive by measure from men

Allatheena itha iktaloo AAala alnnasi yastawfoona

وَإِذَا كَالُوهُمْ أَو وَّزَنُوهُمْ يُخْسِرُونَ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

But when they have to give by measure or weight to men give less than due

Wa-itha kaloohum aw wazanoohum yukhsiroona

أَلَا يَظُنُّ أُولَٰئِكَ أَنَّهُم مَّبْعُوثُونَ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

Do they not think that they will be called to account

Ala yathunnu ola-ika annahum mabAAoothoona

لِيَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

On a Mighty Day

Liyawmin AAatheemin

يَوْمَ يَقُومُ النَّاسُ لِرَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

A day when (all) mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds (Rab-ul-'Ala'meen)

Yawma yaqoomu alnnasu lirabbi alAAalameena

كَلَّا إِنَّ كِتَابَ الْفُجَّارِ لَفِي سِجِّينٍ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

But! Surely the record of the wicked is (saved) in prison register (Sijjin)

Kalla inna kitaba alfujjari lafee sijjeenin

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا سِجِّينٌ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

And what will explain to you what the prison register (Sijjin) is

Wama adraka ma sijjeenun

كِتَابٌ مَّرْقُومٌ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

(There is) a register (fully) written

Kitabun marqoomun

وَيْلٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

Misery, on that Day, to those who deny—

Waylun yawma-ithin lilmukaththibeena

الَّذِينَ يُكَذِّبُونَ بِيَوْمِ الدِّينِ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

Those who do not accept the Day of Judgment

Allatheena yukaththiboona biyawmi alddeeni

وَمَا يُكَذِّبُ بِهِ إِلَّا كُلُّ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

And none can deny it except the transgressor beyond limits, the sinner

Wama yukaththibu bihi illa kullu muAAtadin atheemin

إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ آيَاتُنَا قَالَ أَسَاطِيرُ الْأَوَّلِينَ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

When Our Signs are read (and repeated) to him, he says, "Tales of old!"

Itha tutla AAalayhi ayatuna qala asateeru al-awwaleena

كَلَّا بَلْ رَانَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِم مَّا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

By no means! But on their hearts is the stain of (the evil,) whatever they do

Kalla bal rana AAala quloobihim ma kanoo yaksiboona

كَلَّا إِنَّهُمْ عَن رَّبِّهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ لَّمَحْجُوبُونَ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

Surely, from the Light (of) their Lord, on that Day will they be blocked

Kalla innahum AAan rabbihim yawma-ithin lamahjooboona

ثُمَّ إِنَّهُمْ لَصَالُو الْجَحِيمِ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

Further, they will enter the Fire of Hell

Thumma innahum lasaloo aljaheemi

ثُمَّ يُقَالُ هَٰذَا الَّذِي كُنتُم بِهِ تُكَذِّبُونَ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

Further, it will be said to them: This is the (reality), which you rejected as false

Thumma yuqalu hatha allathee kuntum bihi tukaththiboona

كَلَّا إِنَّ كِتَابَ الْأَبْرَارِ لَفِي عِلِّيِّينَ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

But no! Surely the record of the righteous is (saved) in register (‘Illiyyun) of the Supreme

Kalla inna kitaba al-abrari lafee AAilliyyeena

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا عِلِّيُّونَ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

And What will explain to you what the register (‘Illiyyun) of the Supreme is

Wama adraka ma AAilliyyoona

كِتَابٌ مَّرْقُومٌ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

There is a register (fully) written

Kitabun marqoomun

يَشْهَدُهُ الْمُقَرَّبُونَ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

To which bear witness those nearest (to Allah)

Yashhaduhu almuqarraboona

إِنَّ الْأَبْرَارَ لَفِي نَعِيمٍ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

Truly the righteous will be in happiness

Inna al-abrara lafee naAAeemin

عَلَى الْأَرَائِكِ يَنظُرُونَ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

On Thrones (of dignity) they will be able to see a view (of all things)

AAala al-ara-iki yanthuroona

تَعْرِفُ فِي وُجُوهِهِمْ نَضْرَةَ النَّعِيمِ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

You will recognize in their faces the beaming brightness of joy

TaAArifu fee wujoohihim nadrata alnnaAAeemi

يُسْقَوْنَ مِن رَّحِيقٍ مَّخْتُومٍ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

Their thirst will be quenched with pure wine sealed

Yusqawna min raheeqin makhtoomin

خِتَامُهُ مِسْكٌ وَفِي ذَٰلِكَ فَلْيَتَنَافَسِ الْمُتَنَافِسُونَ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

The seal will be musk: And for this let them desire, those who have true desires

Khitamuhu miskun wafee thalika falyatanafasi almutanafisoona

وَمِزَاجُهُ مِن تَسْنِيمٍ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

With it will be (given) a mixture of drink from the Paradise (Tasnim, the nectar from the pure heavenly fountain

Wamizajuhu min tasneemin

عَيْنًا يَشْرَبُ بِهَا الْمُقَرَّبُونَ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

A spring, from (which) drink those nearest to Allah

AAaynan yashrabu biha almuqarraboona

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ أَجْرَمُوا كَانُوا مِنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا يَضْحَكُونَ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

Those in sin used to laugh at those who believed

Inna allatheena ajramoo kanoo mina allatheena amanoo yadhakoona

وَإِذَا مَرُّوا بِهِمْ يَتَغَامَزُونَ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

And whenever they passed by them, used to wink at each other (in mockery)

Wa-itha marroo bihim yataghamazoona

وَإِذَا انقَلَبُوا إِلَىٰ أَهْلِهِمُ انقَلَبُوا فَكِهِينَ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

And when they returned to their own people, they would return mocking

Wa-itha inqalaboo ila ahlihimu inqalaboo fakiheena

وَإِذَا رَأَوْهُمْ قَالُوا إِنَّ هَٰؤُلَاءِ لَضَالُّونَ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

And whenever they saw them (those who believed), they would say, "Look! These are the people truly astray!"

Wa-itha raawhum qaloo inna haola-i ladalloona

وَمَا أُرْسِلُوا عَلَيْهِمْ حَافِظِينَ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

But they (the unbelievers) had not been sent as keepers over them (those who believed)

Wama orsiloo AAalayhim hafitheena

فَالْيَوْمَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنَ الْكُفَّارِ يَضْحَكُونَ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

But on this Day the believers will laugh at the unbelievers

Faalyawma allatheena amanoo mina alkuffari yadhakoona

عَلَى الْأَرَائِكِ يَنظُرُونَ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

On Thrones (of dignity) they will be able to see a view (of all things)

AAala al-ara-iki yanthuroona

هَلْ ثُوِّبَ الْكُفَّارُ مَا كَانُوا يَفْعَلُونَ

Syed Vickar Ahamed

Will not the unbelievers have been paid back for what they did

Hal thuwwiba alkuffaru ma kanoo yafAAaloona
